The significant nor'easter caused $10-13 billion in damages and economic loss.
Transcript
00:00Yet another billion-dollar disaster, this time coming from the unnamed-by-the-government storm.
00:08Significant September nor'easter is what we've been highlighting this here at AccuWeather.
00:12And widespread damage, certainly.
00:15And this storm is going to be remembered for its coastal flooding, as we talked about,
00:20and beach erosion burning, which were very significant.
00:23The data analytics team, when they put these numbers together,
00:26it's just not insurance losses, John.
00:30There's many other things that they look at, and also the long-term impacts as well.
00:40And you can see some of the factors that are considered in every estimate.
00:45Yeah, these are dozens of factors, and of course others can be considered on some estimates.
00:49And we're looking at the damage, of course, and destruction of homes and businesses that occur.
00:55Also, the cost of evacuations and long-term relocation, the cost of emergency response,
01:01all the cleanup costs associated with it, also impacts to businesses.
01:05This was closing business across a major economic hub of the country here,
01:13across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, in some cases for several days on end,
01:17with many event cancellations and other negative impacts to the economy.
01:22So those are some of the major factors.
01:23And as you mentioned, also, of course, things like increased insurance costs
01:27and the long-term, as appropriate, long-term health and medical impacts as well.
01:33And, John, just to give you an idea, there's some comparisons here.
01:37You know, we were talking to Bill Waddell.
01:39The Shrewsbury River in Seabright was a top-five flooding event there,
01:45and some of the highest water levels there in over a decade.
01:49It didn't compare to Sandy as far as the flooding on that river, but certainly it was a top event.
01:57It sure was.
01:58And one of the things we like to do here at AccuWeather is always put weather events into context.
02:02And you can see that the $10 billion to $13 billion estimate for total damage economic loss
02:08from the significant September nor'easter, it's far under that truly historic storm,
02:15Hurricane Sandy from 2012, of $210 billion in inflation-adjusted total damage and economic loss in 2026.
02:26But then you can compare it to the unnamed tropical wind and rainstorm along the East Coast last year
02:31at the end of the season in the fall last year.
02:35That was $3 billion, so it's more than that, but far less than Sandy.
02:40It's important to point out about Sandy.
02:41Sandy was a large storm and certainly a much more intense storm than the significant September nor'easter.
02:48But what was the case with this storm is that while the high-water mark in so many communities
02:54is and remains Sandy, this storm, our latest storm this weekend, in some cases was the worst storm surge
03:03in coastal flooding since Sandy.
03:04And it's in a few places, Bernie, you're going to end up on the top five list from our latest
03:09storm.
