Tensions have escalated in the Indian city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, after hundreds of residents gathered in midnight protests against the proposed partial demolition of the historic, 600-year-old Shahi Masjid. The BJP-led state government stated that the action is part of a major road-widening project affecting over 270 structures to accommodate the upcoming 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage.
Police deployed tear gas and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel after clashes and stone-pelting erupted near the site. While mosque management and local residents urged authorities to preserve the ancient Islamic heritage site by expanding the road from the opposite side, administrative forces moved ahead following legal clearances from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
