Floodwaters are receding in parts of Bangkok after extreme weather and rain flooded parts of the city. A public holiday has been declared as residents assess the damage.

00:02While the rain has largely stopped in Bangkok, the city is still grappling with a major flooding
00:08emergency because of this enormous downpour that hit the city at the end of last week.
00:15The Thai capital was declared a disaster affected area after this heavy rainfall.
00:20It received some 300 millimetres over just 48 hours.
00:24It led to significant flooding, submerging homes and cars.
00:28There have been major transport disruptions across Bangkok as roads were significantly
00:34flooded.
00:35As of Sunday, some low-lying communities, particularly in Bangkok suburbs, were still inundated.
00:42Hundreds of shelters were set up that were being used by thousands of people who were
00:46escaping the floodwaters.
00:48On Sunday, people used a break in the rain to resupply their homes.
00:53They waded through these deep floodwaters to supermarkets.
00:57Some were seen pulling supplies along in makeshift rafts.
01:01Others were getting around by boat.
01:03Authorities continue to pump water from Bangkok's major canals to try and reduce that floodwater
01:09that's out on the roads and in communities.
01:11Rainfall did ease over Sunday as that low-pressure system moved on westward.
01:16Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected across two dozen provinces by this heavy rainfall
01:23and flooding.
01:24Schools will be closed in Bangkok tomorrow.
01:27And a public holiday has been declared for Monday and Tuesday so that those who can stay
01:32home will be able to.
