The peacock mantis shrimp, scientifically known as Odontodactylus scyllarus, lives in shallow tropical waters across the Indo Pacific. Despite measuring only a few inches long, this colorful crustacean possesses one of the fastest and most powerful strikes in the animal kingdom.
Using spring loaded club like appendages, the mantis shrimp accelerates its punch at over fifty miles per hour. This strike delivers a force comparable to a small caliber bullet, allowing it to easily shatter the thick shells of crabs, clams, and snails.
The strike happens so rapidly underwater that it creates a phenomenon called cavitation. As the club moves, water pressure drops instantly, forming tiny vapor bubbles that collapse in a burst of light, extreme heat, and intense shockwaves.
Scientists have studied the impact resistant structure of mantis shrimp clubs to design stronger lightweight armor and aerospace materials. Would you ever dare hold one of these creatures in an aquarium?
