00:00Hey, how you guys doing? For this week's video, I'm going to talk about a recent purchase.
00:06I purchased a new Sony DVD player. We're not going to do an overall review, but only really
00:12one feature, which I like a lot, and I'm going to be talking about now. So basically, I bought
00:19a lot of new DVDs, and so when I put it in the old Sony DVD player, I had a
00:27lot of problems.
00:27It played for a while, but then it would stop. I couldn't get it to restart the DVD,
00:32so I went out, and I wanted to purchase a new Sony DVD player. I basically wanted to get
00:39pretty much the same model, or something very close to the same model. They didn't sell the
00:47old one, so I bought this new one, which almost looks identical, except with a couple new features
00:55or something like that. And I'll show you. This is the box right here, just to give you
01:00an idea of what it looks like. And one of the newest features is this. Oh, let me tell you
01:07the model number, by the way. Of course, Sony DVD player, model number DVP, SR510H, just to
01:17give an idea what it is. And then this is the new HDMI output 1080p upscaling right here. Now,
01:29what that means is a lot of the older TV and movies were shot in 4x3 ratio until, of course,
01:39today, we basically shoot it in widescreen format, like 16x9 ratio, basically, which fits most
01:51the modern HDTV televisions, or even possibly the 4K. It's basically 16x9 type of picture ratio.
02:02Of course, with any upscaling picture, it's not going to give you a better quality.
02:08In this case, it takes that older 4x3 ratio and upscales it to 1080p. And you're not going
02:19to get a better picture. It's not going to technically make it into HD quality. It's just
02:28upscaling. So you can utilize full screen of your HD television. Of course, normally when
02:35you play a 4x3 ratio on an HDTV, you see black bars on the right and left side. So basically,
02:43it fills in the whole screen. It usually makes for a better viewing experience. But keep in mind,
02:51you're not going to get a better quality picture. In fact, you may degrade slightly because you're
02:57basically stretching it out. And you may get some pixelation or something in the picture. Usually,
03:02it's not a bad experience, really. Most people would barely notice. I'm more worried about
03:10just putting on the screen, getting a full screen and things like that. So I'm actually going to give
03:16you some examples right now. I'm going to show you a lot of modern HDTVs. You can take the input
03:28signal
03:28and you can actually stretch it out. You can either stretch it out like from a 4x3 to widescreen.
03:37You can zoom in. There's different things you can do, which to me isn't the best way of doing it
03:43because it often stretches it out too much. It makes it look wonky. And then, of course,
03:48I'm going to show you the upscaling feature of the Sony DVD player, which I think does a better job.
03:55You don't get that warped look to the picture. And then we're going to kind of compare the two a
04:02little bit. So we're going to be doing that right now. Okay, here we are playing a DVD in 4x3
04:11ratio
04:11on a HDTV. And most modern HDTVs, you can change the picture size to zoom it in. And I'll show
04:20you
04:20some of this right here now. Here we got it stretched out and zoomed in and back again. And now
04:32we're
04:32going to set resolution size using the just a DVD player. We're going to go into settings and custom.
04:39And from there, you're going to go into the screen setup. And here it's set on 16.9, which will
04:45actually show you the black bars on the right and left side. Now to set it to full screen for
04:504x3 ratio,
04:51just like so, as you can see, it shows it full screen. And then we're going to set the 4x3
04:59output
05:00and put to normal. And you can choose full, normal, or auto. I normally go to auto. And then from
05:07there you can
05:08show your picture. As I mentioned before, I typically don't like using the TV to adjust the picture if it's
05:20not
05:20centered right or something because it ends up stretching it out. Kind of warping the picture, I guess you could
05:26say.
05:28And so this is the HDTV stretching out from 4x3 to ratio to 16x9, which is, it'll work. It's okay.
05:39But I'm going to compare that with the DVD.
05:43And you'll notice it's not quite as stretched out and possibly a little warped looking. Now this one's a picture
05:51upscale from
05:524x3 to 16x9 using the DVD player. And I don't know if you noticed the transition from the old to
06:01the new picture,
06:02that it's not quite as stretched and zoomed in as well. And I think the Sony DVD player does a
06:12much better or does a better job
06:14than using your TV alone. So I definitely like the upscale feature from 4x3 to HD 1080p version.
06:26So thanks for watching and see you guys later.
