00:02Half a century ago, in one of the most remote parts of the NT, police made a shocking discovery.
00:08The bodies of two men, with no obvious cause of death, and few clues about what they were doing at
00:15the foot of Mount Darwin, 110 kilometres south of Darwin.
00:19The identities of both men would remain a mystery for five decades, until now.
00:24For those cases where those searches have been conducted, and there are really no other avenues of inquiry left, then
00:32FIG can certainly play a part in resolving those cases.
00:35FIG, or Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy, allows forensic scientists to use public databases to single out a DNA profile.
00:44For example, if I haven't ever uploaded my DNA to any platform or any DNA database, but I have a
00:53third cousin who has, as you add more and more individuals to that picture, you can start to build up
00:59those trees, find the common ancestors.
01:02That's how they came up with the name for one of the men, Trevor Wheeler.
01:07But without a close living family member's DNA for comparison, it wasn't enough for a formal identification.
01:13But after pulling his old arrest records, NT police found their next clue.
01:19He had a fairly chequered past, so he did come to the attention of authorities quite often.
01:23He does have a lot of tattoos with initials on them, which I think could be relevant to people that
01:28he might know, could be family members.
01:29Among Trevor's tattoos, one stood out, the name Cathy, and Sergeant Chato was able to track her down.
01:38Cathy didn't want to go on camera, but she told the ABC she had a relationship with Trevor in the
01:431960s, and that he would violently assault her.
01:46Even so, she felt compelled to help Sergeant Chato solve the mystery, and through her own research, Cathy believes she's
01:53found an unexpected link to Trevor's family.
01:55One of the names he used as an alias was Arthur Burton.
01:58I found that one of our distant relatives had married a Burton, one of my family members way back, and
02:04that Burton led to the Wheelers.
02:05It's very distant, I imagine, but somewhere along, I suppose, he's a cousin, way, way down the line.
02:11Meanwhile, in Darwin, the investigation continues.
02:15Basically, we'd be interested in speaking to anyone, any old Darwinites that may have known this fella.
