CHINA'S ELECTRIC TRUCKS ARE KILLING DIESEL — AND EUROPE HAS NO IDEA HOW FAST IT'S HAPPENING
China's electric heavy trucks outsold diesel for the first time in December 2025, taking 53.89% of heavy truck sales. The film traces the three forces that stacked to flip the world's largest truck market — LFP batteries falling to $48 per kWh, a 5-minute battery swap network, and a 900,000-truck-a-year scale that collapsed lifetime costs. It explains why fleets switched for money not climate, and why BYD, Sany and Windrose are now pushing that system into Europe against Mercedes, Volvo and Scania.

00:00In December 2025, China sold 45,300 new energy-heavy trucks in one month.
00:06In that same month, more than half of every heavy truck sold ran on electricity, not diesel.
00:12That was 53.89% out of 84,000 heavy trucks sold that month.
00:18It was the first time in 100 years that diesel lost the freight market.
00:22Go back 12 months, the share was 22%.
00:25Go back to 2024, it was 9%.
00:29Now picture a highway outside Tangshan, a 40-ton rig pulls in.
00:34Five minutes later it leaves, no diesel, no hours on a cable.
00:38That truck did not win on climate talk, it won on money.
00:42The thing that flipped an entire industry in a year has a name.
00:45But it is not what you think.
00:47The truck that broke diesel was not one truck, it was a system China had been stacking for five years.
00:53Batteries that got cheap enough.
00:55A swap network that made charging disappear.
00:57And a market so big it let factories learn faster than anyone else.
01:02You were told electric trucks were coming someday.
01:04In China someday came in December.
01:07This film is about the three forces that stacked to make it happen.
01:10And why that stack is now leaving China.
01:13Stay with the numbers.
01:14Take the size of the prize.
01:16China sells more heavy trucks in a year than America and Europe together.
01:20About 900,000 a year.
01:23That number is forecast for 2025.
01:26In the first nine months of 2025, it had already sold 821,000.
01:31That is haulage on a continental scale.
01:34Every one of those trucks burns.
01:36A heavy diesel rig in China covers about 100,000 kilometers a year.
01:41That is two and a half times around the earth.
01:43At 35 liters per hundred kilometers, that is 35,000 liters.
01:48Picture a tanker.
01:50That is what one truck drinks each year.
01:52Now multiply by 8 million heavy trucks on the road.
01:56You see why diesel mattered.
01:57And why its demand set the oil market.
02:00In 2024, China sold about 160,000 electric heavy trucks.
02:05Europe sold fewer than 25,000.
02:08So China was already 80% of the world market.
02:11Scale matters.
02:12When you build hundreds of thousands of the same thing, costs fall.
02:16When costs fall, more people buy.
02:19That loop is the engine.
02:21Go back to 2024.
02:22Electric was still a curiosity at 8.6% in the first half.
02:27By the first half of 2025, it was 22%.
02:30By December, it was 54%.
02:32Something accelerated hard in those six months.
02:35Start with the battery.
02:37Not the truck.
02:38The battery is half the cost of an electric truck.
02:40Two years ago, a lithium-iron phosphate pack cost about 0.9 yuan per watt hour.
02:47Today, Cattel sells it for 0.35 yuan.
02:50That is a cut of more than half.
02:52Translate that.
02:53At 0.35 yuan a watt hour is about $48 per kilowatt hour.
02:58A typical diesel truck costs about 100,000 euros in Europe.
03:02An electric one was 320,000 euros.
03:05That gap came from the pack.
03:07Shrink the pack cost and the math moves.
03:09LFP helps twice.
03:11It is cheap because it uses iron, not nickel or cobalt.
03:14And it lasts.
03:15A normal NMC pack does about 2,000 cycles before it fades below 80%.
03:20An LFP pack does 3,500.
03:23Cattel and BYD push that to 4,000 to 6,000 cycles.
03:27At 500 kilometers per cycle, that is 2 to 3 million kilometers.
03:32Enough for the life of two trucks.
03:34Picture a hammer.
03:35You can hit it 10,000 times and it still works.
03:38That durability changes fleet maths.
03:41BYD calls its version the Blade.
03:43Cattel calls its workhorse Shenxing and Qulin.
03:46Both sit on 800 volts.
03:48Both survive heat above 500 degrees before trouble.
03:51That matters when a truck climbs a pass in summer with 42 tons.
03:55So the easy answer is, cheap batteries did it.
03:58Tell yourself that.
03:59China made cheap LFP.
04:02Costs fell.
04:03Fleets switched.
04:04That story fits the price chart.
04:06And it is satisfying.
04:08It is also wrong on its own.
04:10Batteries alone do not kill diesel.
04:12Ask any fleet owner in Shanxi.
04:15He will tell you his truck earns only when its wheels turn.
04:18A cheap battery that needs 4 hours to charge is still expensive.
04:22Because the truck is parked.
04:24The parking costs money.
04:25In China, a heavy truck runs at maybe 60% utilization.
04:30Lose a shift to charging and you lose a third of its revenue.
04:33Cheap sales make the truck cheaper to buy.
04:35They do not make it cheaper to run.
04:37That is why early electric trucks stalled.
04:40They were for mines and ports.
04:42Short loops.
04:43Home to charger every night.
04:45Long haul stayed diesel.
04:47If batteries were enough, Europe would have flipped too.
04:50It has LFP now.
04:51It did not flip.
04:52Diesel still takes 95.8% of new heavy trucks there in 2025.
04:58Something else unlocked the road.
05:00Something that made the charging time disappear.
05:03Put the running costs side by side.
05:05An electric heavy truck costs 2-3 times more to buy than diesel.
05:10About 18% more than an LNG truck.
05:13That is the sticker shock.
05:14Now drive it a million kilometers.
05:16That is the life fleet owners use to decide.
05:19Researchers in China ran that math.
05:21The Associated Press reported it.
05:23Even with the big purchase price, an electric truck saves 10-26% over its life under Chinese conditions.
05:31Why?
05:31Electricity is cheap at night on a Chinese industrial tariff.
05:35About a third the cost of diesel per kilometer.
05:38Maintenance is lower.
05:39No oil.
05:40No AdBlue.
05:41Brakes last longer because the motor does the slowing.
05:44Tires wear faster.
05:46That is true.
05:47The weight hurts.
05:48But the fuel saving swamps it.
05:49One study put lifetime spend on an electric rig at half a diesel rig when you include cheap swaps.
05:55Take a fleet of 100 trucks.
05:58Saving 15% on each is like getting 15 trucks free.
06:02Fleet owners in China are bottom-line driven.
06:04The analyst who tracks China's diesel demand for wrist-add energy, Ye Lin, said the surge was a surprise.
06:11He moved his forecast of China oil peak forward from 2026 to this year.
06:15When accountants move, trucks move.
06:18Now add the trick that solved parking.
06:21Swap.
06:21Not charge.
06:23Swap.
06:23Picture a pit stop.
06:25A robot arm lifts the empty pack out from under the cab.
06:28It slides a full one in.
06:30You watch the clock.
06:32Light trucks do it in two minutes.
06:34A heavy rig with three 171 kilowatt-hour blocks does it in about five minutes.
06:39Total 513 kilowatt-hours.
06:42That is the Cattel QG system.
06:45It works across brands.
06:46More than 95% of common truck models in China can use the same pack.
06:51You scan a QR code.
06:52You drive out.
06:54The depleted pack stays and charges slowly from the grid.
06:57Or it sits as storage and sells power back later.
07:00By the end of 2025, Cattel had 305 of these heavy truck swap stations.
07:06Up to three blocks per truck.
07:07By January 2026, the plan was 900 for trucks, plus 3,000 for cars.
07:14And corridors.
07:15On the Sichuan-Chengqing stretch of the Shanghai Chengdu Expressway, a 1,250-kilometer swap route
07:22opened on December 23, 2025.
07:25Heavy trucks could run Shanghai to Chengdu without waiting.
07:28In Tangshan, four service stations and nine swap points cover 125 kilometers from Qian'an Steel to Jingtang Port.
07:37Drivers swap there in three to five minutes.
07:39That turns a 500-kilometer range into an all-day range.
07:43The battery is no longer a limit.
07:45It is a relay baton.
07:47This did not happen by accident.
07:49Eleven Chinese government agencies signed one plan.
07:53The target is blunt.
07:54By 2030, 40% of new heavy truck sales are new energy.
07:59That is more than one in three.
08:01The fleet should pass 1.6 million new energy heavy trucks, about 20% of all heavy trucks on the
08:07road.
08:08They should carry 18% of highway freight.
08:11To do that, build 3,000 heavy truck charging and swap stations.
08:15And lay 30,000 kilometers of zero-carbon freight corridors.
08:19Think of it as a rail line for rubber tires, power where the freight already is, steel east to port,
08:25coal west to plant, containers between Shanghai, Ningbo, Chengdu.
08:30Catalel says it will cover 80% of main cargo routes by 2030.
08:34And it will push its standard 75-pack, the one built for swap, into 30-plus truck models.
08:40The effect is visible.
08:42In 2024, swap-capable trucks were 35% of new electric heavies.
08:47Sales of those swap trucks rose 94% versus 2023.
08:52By 2025, new energy heavy truck sales were 231,100.
08:57Up 182% year-on-year.
09:00Penetration for the year was roughly 22-29%, depending how you count.
09:05Diesel lost first on the routes where swapping exists.
09:08Then the map grew.
09:09You are thinking what every European engineer says.
09:13Sure, fine for China.
09:14Short port shuttles?
09:16Cheap power.
09:16Subsidies.
09:18Not our roads.
09:19You are right to ask.
09:20If this were easy, Europe would already be electric.
09:24Go stand on the E4 north of Stockholm.
09:27Watch a timber rig climb in minus 15.
09:29Cold cuts LFP range.
09:31Watch it run 800 kilometers to Gothenburg with one driver shift.
09:36European long haul is longer.
09:37And the grid is thinner.
09:39So say it plainly.
09:40Chinese trucks are cheap toys for short hops.
09:43They cannot do real long haul.
09:45They will break down and there is nowhere to fix them.
09:48That is the skeptical case.
09:50And part of it is true.
09:51European service networks were built over 50 years.
09:55Volvo, Scania, Daimler have dealers in every valley.
09:58A Chinese newcomer has none.
10:00Megawatt charging, the 1-megawatt MCS plug that adds 300 kilometers in 30 minutes, barely exists in Europe.
10:08Milance, the joint venture of Daimler Truck, Tratton and Volvo, promises 1,700 public points by 2027.
10:15In May 2025 it opened its first MCS in Zwolle in the Netherlands.
10:20One site, one country.
10:22The Chinese answer was not to wait for that future.
10:25They built a different future.
10:27Swap for today.
10:28And they learned to build trucks lighter.
10:30The Sani E263 weighs 10.9 tons empty.
10:34That leaves more payload for freight.
10:36Little things add up to a system that works where they run.
10:39Change gear.
10:41Go to the lot an hour outside Beijing.
10:43Dust.
10:44Diesel smell still there from the old trucks.
10:47New ones line up.
10:48No engine noise.
10:49A driver does not talk about emissions.
10:51He talks about 1.2 yuan saved per kilometer.
10:55That is the number shouted in driver WeChat groups.
10:58Multiply by 300,000 kilometers a year.
11:01That is 360,000 yuan.
11:03About 46,000 euros.
11:06In two years that covers the extra purchase price.
11:09The lot has a small white swap station.
11:11Battery packs sit like shipping containers, humming.
11:14A truck reverses.
11:15A gantry moves.
11:17One minute 50 seconds later the truck is gone.
11:19That truck runs Kyanan to port and back three times a day.
11:23No driver swap needed.
11:24No lunch break charging.
11:26In Inner Mongolia, engineers at Baibin Trucks showed a dump truck with an EVE energy pack
11:31that charges in 22 minutes for 200 to 250 kilometers.
11:36Not swap, but fast enough for a mine loop.
11:38The driver there cycles the battery four times in a shift.
11:42In both places the logic is the same.
11:44Keep wheels turning.
11:46Everything else is footnotes.
11:47The international press came to film the battery.
11:50The drivers kept filming their payslips.
11:52Now those same economics are boarding a ship.
11:55In March 2026, Reuters counted at least half a dozen Chinese makers planning heavy electric sales in Europe this year.
12:02They named them EV giant BYD, Geely's Verizon, Sani, China's top electric truck brand, Sinotruck, and startups Windrose and Super
12:13Panther.
12:13Some counts say a dozen.
12:15Prices tell the story.
12:16European average for an electric heavy truck is about 320,000 euros, about $380,000.
12:23Chinese entrants aim for up to 30% below.
12:26That is 225,000 to 250,000 euros.
12:30The ICCT priced it starker.
12:32A 2024 battery electric tractor in the United States was $379,800.
12:39In China the same class was $119,600.
12:43That is less than a third.
12:45How?
12:46Scale and supply chain.
12:47China makes 29% of its heavy trucks as zero emission already.
12:51Europe made 4.2% in 2025, up from 2.3% in 2024.
12:57When you make 10 times more you buy batteries cheaper, and you learn faster.
13:02Sani brings the E-263.
13:04636 kilowatt hours of LFP on 800 volts.
13:08Over 500 kilometers at 42 tons gross.
13:11400 kilowatt CCS now.
13:14Megawatt charging later.
13:15Sani says more than 40,000 heavy electrics already run in China.
13:19Deliveries of the E-263 start in Europe in the first quarter of 2026.
13:24Windrose sends parts to Antwerp.
13:26That is its European hub, the port of Antwerp Bruges.
13:29Assembly there, distribution across Europe, R&D beside it.
13:33Its E-700 will also assemble in Savannah, Georgia for America.
13:37BID broke ground in Hungary in June.
13:40Not for cars.
13:41For trucks and buses.
13:42That plant sits inside the EU's 90% truck emissions cut by 2040.
13:47Can the fortress hold?
13:48Europe has three defenses.
13:50Each is real.
13:52First, range.
13:53A Mercedes-E-Aktro 600 does 500 kilometers with 621 kilowatt hours of LFP.
13:59A Scania battery 40-tonner does about 400 to 560 kilometers depending on spec.
14:05Those numbers are rising.
14:07But they are still short of a classic 800-kilometer long haul with no extra stop.
14:12Second, megawatt charging.
14:13Europe is betting on it.
14:15Projects like Macbeth run to January 2029.
14:1822 partners.
14:19Daimler, MAN, Scania, Volvo, ABB, Siemens.
14:24Power of 3 megawatts has been demoed.
14:27400 kilometers in 10 minutes in a lab.
14:30On the road.
14:30Not yet.
14:31Third, service.
14:33A truck lives or dies by uptime.
14:35The European three have spent 50 years building that net.
14:39Windrose knows it.
14:40So it partners with local service.
14:42Sany leans on Putzmeister and Alltrucks.
14:45Even so, a brand new network creaks.
14:48European makers argue battery swap is not needed.
14:51But they hired fast to keep up.
14:52The executive who is racing Scania to match Chinese development pace, Christian Levin,
14:58said China's advantage is how fast it moves from idea to factory floor.
15:02The technologist who leads Volvo Group's engineering, Jens Holtinger, said Europe has
15:06a lot to learn from China on electric trucks.
15:09Those are not outsiders talking.
15:11Those are the defenders talking.
15:13Add it up.
15:14December was not a blip.
15:16It was a stack paying off at once.
15:18LFP packs that run 4,000 cycles for half the price.
15:22Swap stations that turn hours into minutes.
15:25Corridors that put power where freight lives.
15:27And a domestic market of 900,000 trucks a year that lets learning compound.
15:32That stack cut lifetime cost by 10 to 26%.
15:36That is why 231,100 electric heavies sold in 2025, up 182%.
15:43And why diesel demand in China now looks to have peaked.
15:46Ristad expects transport diesel to fall 40% by 2030.
15:51That is a quarter of all diesel use gone.
15:53The International Energy Agency now puts China's oil peak inside this decade.
15:58The export push tests whether a system built for Chinese corridors fits European roads.
16:04Early signs.
16:05Sani promises payback in 2.5 years in Europe, half a diesel cycle.
16:09If that proves true on German electricity prices, the tipping month may move.
16:14If not, the six arrivals may stall at ports and mines.
16:18The unresolved question is not range.
16:20It is ownership.
16:22China splits the battery from the truck.
16:24You buy the chassis.
16:25You rent the energy by the swap.
16:27Europe sells you both.
16:29Which model does a fleet accountant prefer when power prices swing?
16:32That choice will decide whether diesel cracks globally or holds a last line on the Autobahn.
