A Roman Soldier Came Home… Then He Left This Behind ⚔️ | AD 275

Around AD 275, a Roman veteran named Eltaominus dedicated an altar at Binchester Roman Fort to Fortuna Redux, the goddess associated with safe homecoming.

Eltaominus had served with the Ala Vettonum cavalry unit and later became a retired military architect.

The altar was installed inside the fort's bathhouse, where it could be seen by others.

We don't know exactly what dangerous journey he had survived, but the dedication gives us something rare: a personal glimpse into how one Roman serviceman felt about finally getting home.

Almost 1,750 years later, the emotion is still easy to understand.
