Welcome to Lesson 19 of the Human Biology Masterclass and the opening of Section 5: Respiration, Excretion, and Homeostasis.

In this lesson, we explore the respiratory system — from the moment air enters the body to the moment oxygen reaches the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is removed.

You'll learn:

• The complete pathway of air through the respiratory system
• The functions of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli
• The structure of the lungs and the role of the pleura
• Why the right and left lungs have different numbers of lobes
• How the diaphragm and intercostal muscles produce the mechanical movements of breathing
• How changes in pressure cause air to move into and out of the lungs
• How oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged across the alveolar-capillary membrane
• Why gas exchange occurs by passive diffusion
• How haemoglobin transports oxygen through the bloodstream
• How carbon dioxide is transported mainly as bicarbonate
• How the brainstem regulates breathing automatically
• Why carbon dioxide and pH are major signals controlling ventilation
• The role of the medulla and chemoreceptors in respiratory control
• Why the urge to breathe during breath-holding is strongly influenced by rising CO₂

The respiratory system works closely with the cardiovascular system. The lungs load oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide, while the circulatory system transports these gases between the lungs and tissues.

Understanding respiration provides an essential foundation for studying exercise physiology, metabolism, acid-base balance, and human homeostasis.
