Welcome to Lesson 14 of the Human Biology Masterclass.
In Lesson 13, we explored the brain and nervous system. Now we turn to the body's second major communication system: the endocrine system.
Instead of electrical signals travelling through neurons, the endocrine system uses hormones — chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to regulate processes throughout the body.
The endocrine system operates on a different timescale from the nervous system. Neural signals can act within milliseconds, while hormonal signals can produce effects over minutes, hours, days, or longer.
Together, these two communication systems allow the human body to coordinate metabolism, growth, reproduction, stress responses, and homeostasis.
Next lesson: Lesson 15 – Chronic Stress & Sleep: When the Stress Response Doesn't Switch Off
