Welcome to Lesson 13 of the Human Biology Masterclass.

In Lesson 12, we explored how the nervous system communicates through electrical signals and chemical neurotransmission. Now we open the box and explore the organ at the centre of that network: the human brain.

In this lesson, you'll learn:

• The four major lobes of the cerebral cortex and their principal functions
• How the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes contribute to human behaviour and perception
• The roles of the brainstem and cerebellum
• How the medulla, pons, and midbrain support vital functions and neural coordination
• Why the cerebellum is essential for movement, coordination, and motor learning
• The major structures associated with the limbic system
• How the amygdala contributes to emotional processing and threat responses
• Why the hippocampus is essential for forming certain types of long-term memory
• How the hypothalamus regulates homeostasis and links the nervous and endocrine systems
• The difference between explicit and implicit memory
• How encoding, consolidation, and retrieval contribute to memory
• What the famous case of patient H.M. taught scientists about memory and the hippocampus
• How MRI, fMRI, PET, and EEG allow scientists and clinicians to study the living brain
• The difference between spatial and temporal resolution in brain imaging
• Why combining techniques such as fMRI and EEG can provide complementary information about brain function

The brain is not divided into completely isolated regions. Its functions emerge from complex networks in which different structures communicate and work together.

Memory is also far more dynamic than a simple recording. Experiences are encoded, consolidated, stored through distributed neural networks, and reconstructed when we retrieve them.

Modern neuroscience allows us to investigate these processes using complementary technologies that reveal brain structure, electrical activity, blood oxygenation, metabolism, and molecular processes.
