Willard and Dibs react to the news that defensive tackle CJ West is headed for IR. What do the 49ers do at the defensive tackle position now?
Transcript
00:00uh oh oh yeah they don't have any they don't have any defensive linemen
00:05they don't have nothing they do they don't have any defensive linemen
00:09i do i do but and and and i love me some some rookie grayson halton um but um
00:19now we're just making injuries up like people are going on ir that didn't even get hurt
00:25well no i know he got hurt so anyway i'm referring to cj west who is now on ir another
00:33interior defensive lineman for the san francisco 49ers goes down what was it the chip in the knee
00:40cap or something like that what did he bone chip in his knee when did it happen it's a great
00:44question
00:44thank you count it count the bucket start when did it happen it didn't happen they didn't say
00:52anything after the game and they haven't practiced since the game what that they or i guess did they
00:59practice this morning shanahan spoke before practice and he seemed confused do you want to
01:03hear what he had to say about it yes because i'm confused too here it is the full back and
01:08forth
01:08on cj west shanahan earlier today details of the west injury um trying to think what it was again
01:14i know his knee i think bone chip a bone chip his knee yeah is that a season ender or
01:23procedure um yeah i believe he's getting surgery but no it's not a season ender so i'll have to get
01:28him back sometime west been dealing with the injury for a while uh he has something at camp uh i
01:32don't
01:33know if this is the same or if it was something new but it was bothering a lot after the
01:36game
01:37level of concern with the interior front defense and particularly you know alfred not there now cj not
01:43there i mean do you have the people to kind of solve whatever might be the issue well i mean
01:48anytime you have five d tackles make a team and you're down to two of them after two games
01:53that's that's always a concern for anybody um so we were able to assign one new guy and then we
01:57got
01:57three guys on practice squad um that'll be competing to see who's up so i mean we got guys there
02:02in this
02:02building so we got to see how those guys step it up okay
02:09he sounds like he doesn't even know what happened so these are the that's frustrating to me because
02:18um look it's one thing the injury bug by the way like i we can have this conversation later i
02:25feel like
02:25we should stop with the whole 49er injury thing because it appears to be every team in sports every
02:30day what's the niners far and away the most injured team again in the nfl i mean i know that
02:35you have
02:36the stats uh and and whatnot i i think that all injuries are not the same and so i'm gonna
02:42push
02:42back on that a little bit you look around the league half the nfc has lost their quarterback so
02:47i but i mean it's just it's everywhere right now it is overwhelming the giants not the new york giants
02:54the san francisco giants apparently have 18 people or something getting tommy john all at once it's
03:01bananas i don't know what's going on here and so we can have that larger conversation but when it's all
03:09at the same position there's no different everybody's like where do you feel pain in your body right now
03:14my right knee feels it's a little off everything's fine yeah it's a little off so it just i don't
03:19have
03:19the full confidence in it it's probably some sort of an arthritic thing it's right on the kneecap
03:24that's where it hurts me right now this is the equivalent of falling and hitting that like in
03:29other words the spot that's already hurt you know what i mean it's like when somebody gives you a hug
03:34and slaps your back when you got a sunburn um the niners are out of defensive tackles they have two
03:40no but meaning like reserves they can't play the whole game they can't play every play of course not
03:46and cj west played i think about 45 and so i could try to go to the tape and figure
03:52out when exactly
03:53he got hurt he played 26 snaps they were rotating guys and i think if you get like a bone
04:00chip in
04:00your knee you have surgery because you have to remove that thing right because if you move your
04:04knee and then the bone is now like pressing on a nerve that can't be pleasant yeah so and you
04:09know
04:09kyle said he was dealing with something in camp and stuff and maybe it was already you know partially
04:14chipped or maybe it was fully chipped and it hadn't yet gotten to a spot where it aggravates
04:19him but you just add him to the list and according to the rotowire 15 players on ir right now
04:2515 okay
04:26and i was doing the thing yesterday about oh you only get eight designated to return you don't actually
04:33use one of the eight spots until one of them actually returns right so you can stack and i hope
04:38they don't do this 20 or 25 guys on ir but you only get to pull eight of them back
04:43exactly so exactly
04:44and this i mean it sounds like it would be in the plans for this to be one of them
04:49he was very firm
04:50that this is not a season ender so that's great but yeah like get ready to meet new people on
04:57the
04:57defensive line which is um you know kind of how we felt last year the difference being is that nick
05:03wasn't one of them and that that defensive line generated nothing and this one is generating
05:09something but if there is one thing in two games of 49er football that has not looked awesome it's
05:17their up the middle run defense and um i think the two best players that we've seen so far are
05:25the two
05:25healthy ones so i guess that's the good news nothing against alfred collins and cj west but halton as a
05:32rookie is performing better and osa is just better he's the best player of that group and michael
05:38williams in theory could be back in two more games and so that's great but yeah the the revolving door
05:45hey nice to meet you head on in the game is um that's a tough way to play football and
05:52now his name
05:53is naquan naquan jones who played for houston last year so i'm sure it was an easy call you know
05:59friend to friend you got anything for me right naquan jones let go six three three thirteen so
06:06go ahead and plug him in there and at least with a defensive lineman there's not that steep of a
06:11learning curve as opposed to you know if you want to bring in a wide receiver that's a lot more
06:15complicated and complex i think to hit the ground running so i would imagine you're going to see
06:20naquan jones don't know what number he's going to wear just yet but it'll be a high one you get
06:26to
06:26know him it'll be a big number now it's a big man probably yeah get yourself a big number well
06:30with all these different people coming and going you might be running out of numbers
06:33um you might be doing three digis can we start putting no sackle 93 92 okay let's play bingo
06:44um uh kinger in newark says that apparently he's had this injury hi kinger thanks for calling us what's
06:51up hey how's it going guys uh this injury from what you described it's uh osteochondritis
06:58desican so a piece of his knee bone for me it was my femur a little piece of that leg
07:03bone chips off
07:04and sometimes will lodge in the cartilage around your knee um where that became a problem for me
07:10is that little piece of leg bone uh was moving around freely so it would find places to hold up
07:17and um it would lock my knee up at times when i wasn't expecting it uh it was about a
07:23five month
07:24recovery for me just a pleb using kaiser um but that was because they drilled that chip back into
07:30your leg so if they pull that um and they don't drill it back in it should be like uh
07:36two months
07:37tops i hope you guys have a great day thank you thanks can you appreciate that kinger yeah
07:41kind of what i was describing yeah exactly it's a floating body and that thing will lodge somewhere
07:46the knee bone is inside the thigh bone exactly and so his was the femur which is i mean even
07:53more
07:53brutal and i guess if you are a plebe as he said or a pleb they want to keep that
07:58bone in there and
07:59give you a longer term prognosis but if you're cj west it might just be slice remove stitch we'll see
08:05in four games play exactly skills and vallejo hey skills thanks for calling thanks for having me
08:12absolutely uh willard and dibs i want to talk about the nfl injuries that have gone down so far
08:17here in week two and just from the top of my head i think of jackson dart i'm thinking of
08:21the jackson or the james reed and daniels i'm thinking of zach tom caleb williams uh the guy who
08:28on on the patriots who tj watt rolled into i mean it's been a week of carnage
08:35yeah and i'm not sure it's been a worst week of carnage like league wide since 2020 week two when
08:41you remember the 49ers had that massacre uh up in new york new york thousand bosa yeah saquon
08:48barkley court and sudden i think and uh mcafree they all went down that week mcafree still with
08:52the panthers of course so for my main point let me set it up like this um i'm a very
08:58large man
08:59and um just put that to the side for a moment from age 12 well into my 40s i played
09:05competitive
09:06baseball football basketball and league sometimes but mostly just recreationally and you know just
09:12pick up games and things like that and i'll i won't pretend i was ever good enough to be drafted
09:15or anything but i wasn't someone who was going to like hit the ball and run the third base so
09:20i'm
09:21trying to say is i was i was a competent athlete but that said even with my size and my
09:25ability
09:26these hits the nfl players take that they take one hit that they take on a regular basis you put
09:32that hit on me and i would have been down for two years yeah and not out for two years
09:38not out for
09:39two years down for two years meaning that in two years i'll get up from that spot and then we'll
09:45see
09:45you're not able to play again yeah yeah yeah hey skills thank you um as always for uh for your
09:56faithful listenership and for for giving us a call yeah like that we're we're not built like that i'm
10:02not built like that um and they shouldn't be built like that and i know they're allowed to but that
10:08was
10:08my point in our thread earlier is that bigger stronger faster against bigger stronger faster on
10:13surfaces that are completely unsafe right how can we not expect the injury rate to skyrocket and
10:18that's why that's no different than as we're starting to learn a lot it's coming up today
10:22because of blade tidwell like pitchers should not we've known for a long time it's not normal for the
10:27human arm to throw over the top like that's not where the arm goes the arm hangs down the arm
10:32doesn't
10:33go high and now they're throwing this sweeper pitch which puts even more stress on it and you get
10:39five pitchers at the same time i'll get in tj like we're not supposed to do this but that's what
10:45we
10:45do and um the more we push it it's like anything else in our lives the damn ozone layer the
10:52more we
10:52push it the worse it's gonna get and that's what we're seeing in sports right now basketball players
10:57who play an 80 game aau schedule as a 10 year old and you do it every single summer your
11:03legs are
11:03bound to wear out at some point and they do
