00:00:4225th so this week we're going to talk about the championship that he waited a whole lifetime to

00:00:46see the music that connected those memories and what it takes to deliver an encore both in the

00:01:26this summer but i want well how's your summer how's your summer been since before we get started how's

00:01:32your summer been since the next one was this a good summer for you did you feel the energy when

00:01:36you

00:01:36were in new york when you're not in new york were you feeling that next energy it's been magical you

00:01:41know everything is is blue and orange it's blue and orange everything you know and and it's been

00:01:47magical man is just seeing this whole thing come to life anywhere you go in the country i've been

00:01:53all over the place anywhere you go in the country wearing this hat you know if you're pointing at

00:01:57you yeah yeah yeah you know so so even if it's people that aren't fans man i was in dc

00:02:03on on some

00:02:04studio business stuff and um there was a dude who was a pacers fan and i had my hat on

00:02:10it he was like

00:02:11man you guys did it you guys did it nothing but love and support you guys did it man wow

00:02:16you know

00:02:17so seeing those things we're used to being on the other side of that we used to being on in

00:02:22the other

00:02:22seat where we're saying yeah man you guys got us you nah the day's over you know we we we

00:02:30uh yeah we

00:02:31we got it we got it now you know yeah it's a new day that's crazy pacers fan coming up

00:02:36and giving

00:02:36you love right who'd have thought that when we were growing up a pacers fan will come up and show

00:02:40i should have filmed it i should have i should have made some content out of it because nobody

00:02:45would believe it you're right i believe you i'm not saying i'm lying i'm just saying nobody would

00:02:48believe it we absolutely so absolutely do me a favor here take me back to the moment when the

00:02:55knicks won it all where were you who were you with and what was your reaction when it became real

00:03:01when the knicks won it all man so i was uh i was in atlanta uh at uh my homie

00:03:07pierre's house another

00:03:08new yorker and lifelong nick fan who lives in atlanta now and um me and my wiz who's over there

00:03:14with his peoples with a bunch of us it might have been 20 30 people you know one of those

00:03:18types of

00:03:18gatherings where you know almost like we having a fight party right you're having a watch party and

00:03:22everything and they were everywhere every bar every as you know you know it's been everywhere and uh

00:03:27was at his house and the whole time him and i are screaming at the tv and dapping when something

00:03:34good

00:03:34happens and you know yelling and screaming when wimby is doing whatever and when the reps are

00:03:38putting on their jersey to do whatever for wimby and them and you know we're just doing that whole

00:03:42thing and um the whole night i was yelling screaming voice going crazy and at that moment when it went

00:03:51down the irony of it all was i was speechless i was absolutely speechless i didn't cry or anything like

00:03:58that i just was speechless and it was like the whole night i had done what i was doing my

00:04:03entire

00:04:04life 43 years screaming and yelling and not running out of words and at that one moment i ran out

00:04:10of

00:04:10words i literally just stared at my homie's tv and i just was speechless i was speechless for like a

00:04:16good

00:04:16two minutes and he was yeah screaming and we dapping but i'm dapping quiet i'm just like

00:04:23and i was speechless nothing nothing was happening i couldn't believe it so listen for me to hear you

00:04:30say that somebody's known you for a little bit and what you do for a living right you are a

00:04:36writer

00:04:36you are always with words i have to speak for a living for a living and you had nothing to

00:04:43say

00:04:43but i get it because it's something you thought about you know a whole time like you've been waiting

00:04:49for this thing to happen and then it actually happens right and you're kind of like okay

00:04:53what do what do i do in this moment i had a lot of thoughts in that moment when the

00:04:58next one but

00:04:59did you think like what version of yourself did you think about that night did you think about

00:05:03yourself as the kid that grew up in brooklyn that became the next fan or was it the latter of

00:05:08what i

00:05:08just said like the grown man who's been waiting for this his entire life and then this finally

00:05:12happened like was there any part that connected with you in that silence or lack of speech that you had

00:05:17in the moment i think there was an in between there was so many different layers of you know

00:05:24we're no longer the butt of the joke right one of the moments that really stood out to me was

00:05:30mike

00:05:30breen and he said nix fans this is not a dream you know that part hit hard and i was

00:05:39super just like

00:05:41caught up in the moment couldn't say a word couldn't utter a word and i i thought about mellow

00:05:47i thought about mellow immediately um sacrifice what he put up for the city what he put up with

00:05:54for the city what he went through you know what he goes through still even being retired when people

00:06:01talk about legacies and the knicks and you know the good the bad the indifferent i thought about him

00:06:07for sure i think that was one of my first moments because of knowing how close we were in the

00:06:11mellow

00:06:11era knowing how close we were against paul george and all of them and that year how it could have

00:06:17been the year and you know that was obviously the closest we had gotten to it up until this point

00:06:23and um or at least where it felt realistic you know obviously the year before we went to eastern

00:06:28conference finals and everything like that but at least where it felt realistic and i thought about

00:06:33low for sure thought about mellow for sure that that was pretty quick yeah and i think that's why for

00:06:37me and i know you were there too seeing some of the legends like mellow um like ewing like starks

00:06:43guys

00:06:43i've talked to as well too just seeing them at the parade it was so dope because it almost felt

00:06:47like

00:06:48the championship was for them too right these are guys that sacrificed the blood sweat and tears

00:06:52and then they got to win that so i think it's dope that you did think about other people because

00:06:56it's

00:06:56interesting how something you waited for but your mind still goes towards other people in that moment

00:07:01that you know we're going to enjoy this and as we were saying it's been an incredible summer blue and

00:07:05orange vibes throughout the city what was there a moment this summer when you were in the city

00:07:11that you felt captured for you like what this championship meant was just being around people

00:07:16being in different spaces was there a moment where you were like man the city's really on one right

00:07:20now with the blue and orange everything was there a moment for you with that parade day parade day

00:07:26was wild because i remember walking through brooklyn and there was old ladies with you know

00:07:33they had something blue on or something orange on i'm seeing men who look like they you know

00:07:40corporate america navy blue suit orange tie white shirt you know i'm seeing nuns i'm seeing you know

00:07:48just so many different walks of life church people and people in the street and with nick pins on i'm

00:07:55seeing old men at the supermarket old ladies at the supermarket just nick something nick's hat nick's t-shirt

00:08:02the bootleg nick's t-shirts which by the way you have to have one i have all the official authentic

00:08:09championship merch but i definitely got a boot because if you're really from new york you know

00:08:13what it is as far as going on fulton street or atlantic ave or notion having getting a bootleg so

00:08:18i said i gotta get a boot i gotta get a bootleg too like just for the nostalgia of

00:08:23the 94 run when you know we almost went there you know so um just seeing it everywhere seeing

00:08:30little kids with jerseys on and hats on little babies people on the train gentrifiers everybody

00:08:39everybody just nicked out and parade day it was unheard of just the streets i mean i was in union

00:08:46square i was in harlem i was in brooklyn i was downtown i was city i was everywhere bouncing around

00:08:52the

00:08:52city you know and nicked out nothing else mattered you know and that was the energy and it was like

00:08:59see for everybody every talking head every pundit everybody on these networks and everybody who calls

00:09:07themselves whatever they think they are when it comes to sports journalism and everyone who's ever

00:09:12had something to say about us all the athletes who didn't want to play for us or made jokes or

00:09:17whatever this was why it was so real and they see it now you know you see katie what is

00:09:23180 from the

00:09:24knicks ain't the cool thing to yo man they got it they got you see it you know like it's

00:09:29more than

00:09:30anyone would have ever imagined you know it really lived up to the hype of yo what would happen if

00:09:37the

00:09:37knicks got it oh you saw it and it's still you know then they say is this oh you know

00:09:44it was a fluke

00:09:44well you know okay okay cool and and i have my theories behind that as well but regardless of

00:09:49anything we got it and we got it for real for real it wasn't like you know the lucky bounce

00:10:30the start of the fall i haven't seen it you're right sky that day was that day was crazy that

00:10:35day was the beginning and i think that's something i'll never forget it's kind of what you hit on

00:10:39getting up that day going to the parade just the amount of people that's on the train early all the

00:10:45blue and orange everything crazy and then seeing the crazy follow through i've watched i know we both

00:10:50we both have kids right and i've watched my my daughter at her school i've just watched how much

00:10:55more brunson jerseys there are everywhere oh yeah it's it's wonderful it's crazy man it shows what

00:11:03it i mean i think i read a report that said the knicks championship merch was the most profitable the

00:11:11most successful championship merch of any sports team ever you know in any league doesn't shock any

00:11:18league it doesn't either this is not yeah this is not you know this is not oh my gosh no

00:11:24like you

00:11:25know this is this is for real it's new york it's new york city it's the mecca for a reason

00:11:29it's the

00:11:30garden for a reason it's the home you know and for it to happen here with this team that it

00:11:35happened

00:11:36with this type of team i think says so much because there were so many runs of trying to go

00:11:42for the

00:11:42biggest fish you know that that we could that we could uh pull out the water and for it to

00:11:47not go

00:11:47that way but for it to go with a bunch of guys who people would underestimate underrate undermine

00:11:54think whatever of you know that's that's what i was alluding to when i said i have my own theories

00:11:59for that the reason why some people still act up is because they still don't believe in this team

00:12:04because there's no stupid superstar right because they don't want to give it to jb jb without a doubt

00:12:09as a superstar without a doubt but why don't they want to give it to him well because he doesn't

00:12:14jump through the gym and yam it on you right he's not shooting steph curry 60 from three behind the

00:12:20backboard with his eyes closed right he doesn't you know he's not lightning quick and crossing you

00:12:24over and there is no signature special superstar oh i moment for him right he's not donovan mitchell

00:12:32yamming it on you from the free throw line or whatever like those things don't exist with him

00:12:36or josh hart or mccall or cat or no this is just a group of guys who are all talented

00:12:42uber talented

00:12:43who all have chemistry through the roof put on their hard hat put their lunch and their pail

00:12:49put their tims on double soul always never single so double soul tims and went to work and that's it

00:12:56they didn't have to be the flashiest they didn't have to be the jump through the gym and 360 dunk

00:13:02didn't have to be you know 12 threes in a row even though landry sham it came pretty close you

00:13:07like they didn't have to be that type of player no we don't have we don't have an sga we

00:13:13don't have a

00:13:14you know a katie we don't know we have jb but sky is now the prototypical pg that everyone is

00:13:22going to

00:13:22be molding their game after for the next 10 years but you know people still don't want to respect it

00:13:26they're going to have to get two or three joints before people say all right yeah yeah there's still

00:13:32the the doubt you know i'm sometimes a little surprised at that at least especially with jb

00:13:37considering what he did in that game five right like that is one of the legendary performances we

00:13:43are talking about and then we find out that he was doing it with an injured shooting hand

00:13:47and he still dropped 45 in the biggest moment this is the thing that we say about athletes right

00:13:52this is what makes you a superstar that's what makes you a superstar right because he doesn't

00:13:56have the makeup of a superstar right like if he was 6'6 6'5 right it would be all

00:14:02right book it

00:14:02but you know he's six feet you know there is no razzle dazzle handle there is no you know he's

00:14:08not

00:14:08okay he's short but he can jump over everybody in windmill there's none of that so they don't want

00:14:14to respect it they don't understand like how could he of all people do this how could he be the

00:14:20one

00:14:20right and yeah he is the one and he's proved it and he's going to continue to prove it and

00:14:25just don't want to give it up but you don't have a choice and it's going to become even more

00:14:30october 20th you know when that banner road goes up and those rings come on you know there it is

00:14:36there it is can't deny it can't can't deny it at all well you kind of touched on this with

00:14:42the haters out there because this is where i wanted to go next with you did did winning change you

00:14:48as a knicks man are you more peaceful and not stressed because they've won now or is it more

00:14:54like i'm gonna put my chest out a little bit more i'm gonna talk to the haters out there that

00:14:58have something to say has it changed you at all like where you might want to do more some trash

00:15:03talking to folks or you're a little bit more calm there's both there's both i think you can be at

00:15:08peace knowing that you reached a mountaintop as a fan of course uh while still talking crazy and

00:15:16putting your weight on the table and saying hey yelps listen we the team to go at right we're the

00:15:21team that everyone wants to be i mean i even saw the other day one of these uh one of

00:15:25these clickbait

00:15:26sb nation one of them that uh put out a list and like the knicks were second the celtics were

00:15:31first

00:15:31how are the celtics first and they lost arguably their most important piece you know like how how are

00:15:38they first you know so uh if they would have had philly first i wouldn't agree with it but at

00:15:43least i

00:15:43would understand the rhetoric and the logic behind it yeah boston first like how because people still

00:15:48can't get over that right because you got tatum six eight superstar does this this this okay cool

00:15:54they still can't get past that right and the fact that in their minds we don't have those things when

00:15:59we absolutely do but because we don't have those things as far as how it looks on the grand scheme

00:16:06of things you still can't get over it and it's like all right cool but i'm definitely at peace that

00:16:11we got it you know there's nick's memorabilia all over my house you know even more than it always

00:16:15was championship memorabilia everywhere so i'm definitely at peace there's the whole man we

00:16:20got to get it this year we got to get it this year obviously we got it but you still

00:16:24want to get it

00:16:25every year so for me it's like yo we got to get it this year but there is a sigh

00:16:29of relief would it

00:16:30be wonderful to double up and triple up absolutely it would be incredible but there is that sigh of like

00:16:36we got it you know god forbid if it wasn't for another 10 or 15 at least we got it

00:16:42you know but

00:16:42i'm i'm gunning for us to get it again this year let's run it let's run it back all right

00:16:46we're gonna get into that to the run it back part of it so you got to experience this again

00:16:51we grew up

00:16:52very similar we're almost same age lifelong fan but you're also the artist behind blue and orange

00:16:57everything orange blue yeah and your song and also other new york hip-hop anthems they saw an increase in

00:17:05streams during the spring when they had this run did you notice that when did you first notice the

00:17:11song taking on a bigger life during the playoff run oh man well first off i gotta give endless

00:17:17salutes to my bro cp and uh my fam over at at nyx fan tv absolutely you know when i

00:17:24did the record which

00:17:25the record is about three years old now i did it during the 2023 playoffs and um you know it

00:17:32was

00:17:32always something i was pushing and you know alan hahn was very big on the record and he was dming

00:17:36me about it and playing it on espn radio and you know was starting to make rounds in certain regards

00:17:41but then you know they would lose so we'd get quiet and then it would come back when the season

00:17:44would

00:17:44start but cp came to me and asked yo can i run this as the nyx fan tv theme song

00:17:51i love the record it's

00:17:52incredible you know etc etc and you know he came to me and was like you know can i run

00:17:56i was like

00:17:57absolutely bro like i love the show we peoples we tight absolutely and um he made it the theme so

00:18:03now every single episode when you watch nyx fan tv that's me at the beginning and end that's blue

00:18:08and orange everything he's the only person with the instrumental because he needed it to be able to

00:18:13chop up and put the audio over so if you ever hear somebody else rhyme on it i'm gonna let

00:18:18you know

00:18:20you don't get that you gotta cut that check yeah yeah nope nah no nobody touching that but um he's

00:18:26the only person with with the instrumental because i said yo absolutely you can make it the official

00:18:30theme and um so it starts there for sure because he's been running it endlessly for a long time now

00:18:36and yeah but the better they would do the more the song would grow and i would just always post

00:18:43every time they won you know first round second round whatever it was even during the season you

00:18:48know i would post it when they would win but really in the playoffs the plan was always okay

00:18:51in the playoffs they're getting ready to start it's gonna ramp up if they would win post the link post

00:19:02grew and took on a life of its own and the more they would win obviously the crazier it would

00:19:06and then people started reaching out to me saying hey one person in particular somebody i know

00:19:11reached out and they said yo man uh you know congratulations on the um on the record going

00:19:19wild and being the number one son i was like what are you talking about and i had to go

00:19:22look it up

00:19:23that it became the number one streamed new york anthem in the world during that run and the list

00:19:32was me you know it was blue and orange everything it was jay-z alicia keys empire state of mind

00:19:37it was um frank sinatra new york new york it was billy joe it was jaru fat joe jady kiss

00:19:44like this

00:19:44wasn't just a nicks thing this wasn't a new york thing this wasn't a hip-hop thing this was all

00:19:51york records in all genres it was taylor swift welcome to new york all of these records the number

00:19:57one streamed record was blue and orange everything independent sky zoo from brooklyn new york you know

00:20:03over taylor swift over frank sinatra over billy joe new york state of mind over all of that and

00:20:09that was all the people that was it literally it had a 35 000 uptick crazy you know that's a

00:20:18000 and that number matters like you said just being an independent artist like that that matters so

00:20:24absolutely yeah yeah and and it just you know all of these historical new york records from major

00:20:31record labels and big budgets and campaigns behind them all i did was post a link and say hey here

00:20:37you know and it was an older record it was a record from three seasons ago yeah and it just

00:20:43it it rang

00:20:44off man and um you know the thing about it too being a little bit of old three years but

00:20:50a little bit of

00:20:50older record you know i remember when i first did it in cp like we just talked about he asked

00:20:54me i love

00:20:55the record yo how come you didn't shout out any of the the new nicks the current nicks and i

00:21:01because players get traded every day and he was like ah i get it that makes sense when i made

00:21:06the

00:21:06record julius randall was still on the team i mean you quickly still on the team rj barrett so if

00:21:10of those players would shout it out in the record the record wouldn't exist right now record wouldn't

00:21:14make sense so i purposely did that when i wrote the record it was about the nicks as a legacy

00:21:21as a team

00:21:23as the theme for the city and for the team and not about the individual players and if i'm gonna

00:21:29shout

00:21:29out players they're gonna be players who retired so there's no moving and shaking and tray i mean

00:21:33imagine if the record was based around julius randall and rj barrett and all of them and they're

00:21:37gone ob top in and you know because they were on the team when i made the record but i

00:21:41purposely said

00:21:42i'm not going to mention anybody who's on the team right now because they could be gone tomorrow and all

00:21:47of those names i mentioned are gone you know so um i wanted the record to be able to live

00:21:51forever

00:21:52and to do that i had to write it a certain way as a writer i couldn't just go for

00:21:57the typical thing

00:21:58and shout out who was on the team right at the moment even if i made it now and i

00:22:01shouted out

00:22:02everybody on this team jeremy sohan is gone you know like mr robinson is gone of all people so

00:22:07nope i as a writer i there were certain constraints and confinements i had to adhere to

00:22:12and say nah keep it here mellow uh you know pat of course bernard king you know jamal crawford

00:22:19you know uh clyde of course and willis reed and earl you know just shouting out the guys who were

00:22:24here

00:22:25and you know the record doesn't have to change now we can bump this record 30 years from now

00:22:30and it'll still have the same significance and um yeah it it it blasted man and i'm still trying

00:22:36to make it the official theme but um you know my goal is to make it the record when they

00:22:41come out

00:22:41the tunnel you know that uh look we talked about that three years ago when i had you on when

00:22:46dropped the record and i was like that record didn't come out the tunnel too man they've been coming

00:22:50out the tunnel to that since since my bro mellow since the mellow era man i'm number one when swiss

00:22:55beats made that record in 2011 they've been coming out to that record since 2011 we we gotta shake the

00:23:00room a little bit and change the tunnel record you know so um my goal when i made it was

00:23:06like i want to make a record that they could run out to so even when we're putting the beat

00:23:13talking about what i wanted the record to sound like that was the vision in my head you know

00:23:25all was in my head when i was putting the record together so the goal is to make it the

00:23:30team record

00:23:31but um they're definitely aware you know i've spoken to people up there about it um people that

00:23:36love it up there man there's some people up there i don't know if they're still there so you know

00:23:41i'm

00:23:41not gonna shout it out but i've spoke some people up there that were floored by the record and was

00:23:46like man i'm running this up the chain i'm running it so obviously the louder the record gets i mean

00:23:50people were playing it in front of msg yeah i wasn't there for that i was at home watching it

00:23:55i've seen it i've seen people play it in front of msg so i've definitely seen it you know yeah

00:25:25all is there a bar that maybe hits differently that you probably thought didn't matter as much

00:25:31when you wrote it but now you're like oh this this this really rings out or it's more personal

00:25:36in the way i penned it maybe not just curious i i wouldn't say didn't matter as much or you

00:25:44know

00:25:44wasn't something i put much on but i would say as much as it mattered in the moment mattering even

00:25:51more now it's one team in the city let them know what it is empire state of mind aiming over

00:25:58the

00:25:58bridge talk to us you know and of course i'm poking at and making fun of the brooklyn nets because

00:26:05you know me you know i'm very anti-brooklyn nets and i'm from brooklyn born and raised but

00:26:08it's it was a reminder man it's one team in the city man that's it you can do whatever you

00:26:15want to do

00:26:16to try to make another team shake the proof of every borough standing on a rooftop looking down

00:26:24at a projector on a wall like they was doing in fort green at habana outposts and like everywhere right

00:26:31and like the stats that crime was going down between 7 p.m and 11 p.m all over the

00:27:20jersey colorways and bring fans it doesn't matter it's one team in the city that's it yeah hey you

00:27:30gonna happen listen you know what's funny not them but um a couple other teams reached out about a record

00:28:07other stuff turned out some that's how he became a billionaire so maybe i should have but um i i

00:28:12didn't do it a couple teams reached out straight up nba teams hey you know reaching out wanted to

00:28:17see if you could craft something similar and um i didn't do it did they just want you to write

00:28:21it or

00:28:22they wanted you to write and record it oh the whole deal right and record okay like ask guys you

00:28:28what i mean like we want to blue and orange everything so now i'm yo and i'm talking about their

00:28:33team and my voice and if it was just writing it i'm a ghostwriter so if it was just writing

00:29:22you know you've met people that you've never met you didn't know but they now your music this song

00:29:28is going to be attached to one of their happiest memories or in their life or their sports fandom

00:29:33which is now the next wing at all for the first time in 53 years what's that like when people

00:29:37to you and it's like yo your song is linked to a very happy memory for you what's that like

00:29:42to hear

00:29:42that i'm absolutely honored and floored you know for me as an artist and the type of mc that i

00:29:49am and

00:29:49the type of music i make i get those interactions with people often and i'm honored and privileged

00:29:56by it and humbled by it but for it to be in this capacity with the knicks is different right

00:30:02i get

00:30:02it with people from brooklyn with people who've gone through xyz or lived in certain situations or

00:30:07you know people who are just entering fatherhood and they talk about my milestones album which is

00:30:12about fatherhood in the inner city or they talk about uh all the brilliant things which is about

00:30:16gentrification they talk about the mind of a saint which is about snowfall you know

00:30:19so i get that a lot and i'm humbled by it but to get it for the knicks is a

00:30:24whole different thing

00:30:25because it's sports and it's a sports team and it's arguably top three franchises in all of major

00:30:31sports you know as far as marketability and profitability and what they're worth and who they

00:30:35are so it could have been anybody a lot of people started making knicks records man like they were

00:30:42everywhere they were everywhere all of a sudden everybody had a knicks record everybody had something they

00:30:47wanted to run up everybody had a record that wasn't a knicks record and they tried to flip it and

00:30:52bounce it and turn it into a knicks record right like big name artists up-and-coming artists and everyone

00:30:57in between but my record blue and orange everything was the one standing at the top of the mountain

00:31:02and uh i'm honored by it man and uh shout to stefan marbury um another super super um supporter of

00:31:11the record show

00:31:12man he was posting it every day on his instagram on his stories on his main posts tagging me shouting

00:31:18me out every day you know i mean and and i never met steph you know it was all dms

00:31:24he he shouted the

00:31:26record out and he dm me and i was like oh man and i hit him back and we just

00:31:31started building from there

00:31:31he sent me his number and we text a little bit but i never met steph but for him to

00:31:36be like that and

00:31:37feel that way and and promote that record so hard it's another one you know jen used uh um uh

00:31:43my man

00:31:44jen sent it to jeremy lynn who used the record so jeremy lynn used the record when he was at

00:31:49mellow's

00:31:50podcast 7 p.m in brooklyn and that was huge you know of all the moments right him and mellow

00:31:55and

00:31:56their history and all of that stuff and what could have been and the post with him up there at

00:32:00the show

00:32:00he used the record i never met jeremy lynn you know shout to my man jen who facilitated that so

00:32:05it's all it was just coming together man on its own all i would do was post the link once

00:32:11and put

00:32:11my phone down you know and the people said the rest they they spoke for it yeah power of music

00:32:17power through social media that can be positive that's really absolutely all right let's get into

00:32:21some yeah let's get into some new music and then we'll go back to the next so you and apollo

00:32:26back together one of my favorite producers for another album this is your second collab album

00:32:30first one in 10 years um yes this one's called luxury tax what made this the right time to make

00:32:38another full project together 10 years you know 10 year anniversary that that really was it it's

00:32:44something that we started lightly talking about towards the end of 2024 and uh we said okay before

00:32:52you know it you know we eight years out now before you know it's gonna be 10 years it's gonna

00:32:55be like

00:32:55you know the 10 year anniversary you know we might we might need to run it back we might need

00:32:59to get back

00:32:59together and you know make something happen because the thing about apollo and i we're actually

00:33:03genuine friends you know we hang out at each other's houses we check on each other's families

00:33:07and you know we're actually friends so it's not like we made a record and didn't speak for 10 years

00:33:13you know we speak all the time but we just hadn't made any music since then maybe a song or

00:33:18two here

00:33:18or there but you know nothing like this uh but we started having that conversation when we were on tour

00:33:23in europe in 2024 or december of 2024 said yeah man when the time comes what better time to do

00:33:31it

00:33:31than a bookmark moment which is you know 10 years you can do it at eight you can do it

00:33:36at nine but 10

00:33:37years you know there's a significance in that so you know we waited and um earlier this year he actually

00:33:43flew down to my house and uh played me a bunch of beats and i picked everything he said man

00:33:48i want to

00:33:48be with you in the room when you pick the beats i don't want to just email them to you

00:33:51so he hopped

00:33:52on a flight came to the house and uh pressed play on a bunch of beats and i picked what

00:33:56i wanted

00:33:57and i sat you know for three weeks and made the album you know i knocked the album out in

00:34:01three weeks

00:34:01and that was that so the album's actually been done since march i finished the album in uh like mid

00:34:07late

00:34:07march but i was sitting on it you know a lot of people know i had knee surgery so i

00:34:11was down for a

00:34:12couple months and everything so i didn't want the burden of trying to write and record while i was

00:34:17recovering and going through physical therapy and on meds and you know all these different things

00:34:21that could hinder the creativity i just wanted to focus on rehabbing and getting myself together

00:34:26so i made the music before the surgery but um the music's been done since march you know so um

00:34:33we're excited to put it out the end of september is the 10 year anniversary of the easy truth which

00:34:39is

00:34:39our first joint so it made sense to center it around that so september 25th luxury tax just in

00:34:45time for the 10 year anniversary of our first go around you know we welcome you back to the party

00:34:50with the second one yeah if you ever heard the easy truth go check that out too and sky remember

00:34:54in mid-march right when you knew i was having my surgery on my achilles you had hit me you

00:34:58told me

00:34:59he was like yeah i'm wrapping up this other album and i was like damn already you just dropped

00:35:03views of a lifetime ep which i love yep there you go actually sky just sent that to me on

00:35:07vinyl

00:35:07appreciate that bro yeah but you know it you know yeah i remember just being like hey back to work

00:35:12already and so i didn't ask you this then so i'm gonna ask you this now and i always ask

00:35:17you this

00:35:17every time we talk about your music i know you always have a theme with your albums and i love

00:35:22that

00:35:22right yes what's the title luxury tax mean in the world of this album what does luxury tax mean to

00:35:28you

00:35:28because it kind of also correlates to basketball fans on the business side yeah right but what does

00:35:34luxury tax mean all that second apron talk that dolan is anti right um you know um so with the

00:35:41title uh the theory behind it is anything that you're going for in life you know like anything

00:35:49else you buy anything else you go for anything else you want there's a tax that comes with it right

00:35:53so the luxury tax of like okay this is what i want this is what i'm going for this is

00:35:59my goal whether it's you know financial whether it's a dream you have whether whatever it is whatever

00:36:05the happiness and the success and the peace that you want there's going to be some sort of tax that

00:36:10comes with it that you have to also pay whatever the thing is that you want is it worth it

00:36:16is it worth

00:36:16that tax it may be i'm not here to tell you it is or isn't just thinking about is it

00:36:21worth it or not

00:36:21so now in the context of the album you know the whole album is based on taking this drive

00:36:26and the album starts with the drive you know um i say something like the uh treat this like you

00:36:34riding for the first time the driver looking at you like all of this here's gonna work fine you know

00:36:39um you're taking this ride you're taking this drive that you've never been on to go get the thing

00:36:44whatever the thing is and by the end of the record the last record on the album is called the

00:36:49rear view

00:36:49by the end of the album you're looking back in the rear view at everywhere you've been on that drive

00:36:54and you know all the luxury taxes that you had to incur on that ride so when you get the

00:36:59album

00:36:59it'll all come together and there's a lot of moments and speaks of taking this ride and coming back

00:37:05around the block to pick up the people who feel left out and all of that is is very figurative

00:37:09you

00:37:09know with the concept within the album and when you get it and you hear it and press play

00:37:13everybody watching you'll understand but that that's the theme of it you know what is the luxury tax on

00:37:19whatever it is that you're trying to get and then when you see that is it worth it man this

00:37:23thing

00:37:23costs such and such this pair of sneakers but tax is going to put it at an extra forty dollars

00:37:27is that

00:37:28worth you know like that's the very obviously simplistic uh you know example of it but that's

00:37:34the idea behind it but on a way larger and grander scale as far as the internal element of that

00:37:41got you

00:37:42so people love that first album with you guys the easy truth that we talked about and when you

00:37:48have a situation like this i think in anything people create stuff when you create something

00:37:51that people love how do you approach the next one right because that's another thing you don't

00:37:56want to redo the same thing but you want people to have that same love hopefully an attachment to

00:38:01it and just maybe a different way so how did you approach this one and does that i'm going to

00:38:05tie

00:38:05this to the knicks does that give you any sympathy for what the knicks are going to walk into this

00:38:09season and they try to repeat because you're trying to repeat not the same album but that same feeling

00:38:15right i think you understand what i mean there so how did you approach this one where you're

00:38:19trying to get that same feeling that people have for the critically acclaimed the easy truth

00:38:24funny enough i'm gonna steal a theory from mikhail bridges um treated like a zero zero

00:38:31you know games where the knicks were up 3-0 he was like it's zero zero you know when the

00:38:38game is

00:38:39over and we're in the locker room or we're talking to the press and the media is zero zero you

00:38:44know

00:38:44kind of treating it like that so not even thinking about the easy truth when i wrote this album i

00:38:50honestly didn't even think about the easy truth because it's not a sequel it's not a part two it's

00:38:54not picking up where that left off it's us of course so you know if you know my music you

00:38:59know my

00:38:59opinion what i'm about you know apollo and the way he creates and produces and what he's about

00:39:04and it's like okay you know what you're getting but this is 10 years later we're even more mature

00:39:12we're older we're grown you know it's a very mature album from the soundscapes and the music beds as

00:39:18well as depending what i'm doing you know i tell people it's not jay-z 444 mature you know it's

00:39:24not

00:39:24me talking about mortgages and artwork and stuff like that which i love i think 444 is a top five

00:39:30jay-z

00:39:30album but it's not that mature i guess it's the age bracket or moments right before you get to

00:39:37that level of maturity and age and growing up so it's a really mature album as far as the content

00:39:43and and what i'm talking about and you know the intentions behind everything that i'm saying love

00:39:48it love it let's go back to the knicks real quick because you talked about repeating not doing the same

00:39:52thing over and over again what's your strongest basketball reason that the knicks can repeat this

00:39:58year and then also what's the thing that you think could get in their way from them repeating

00:40:05confidence is one of the biggest push throughs in life right like someone cannot be

00:40:11great at whatever the thing is that they're doing but if they have the confidence and they think that

00:40:17they are they'll get through it people will start to believe it people will approach them in a different

00:40:23way and fear them in a different way because of the confidence that they're exuding for the thing that

00:40:28they supposedly are great at right now you look at the knicks who are actually great uh the confidence

00:40:34of we did it we got over the hump you know we're we're running through i think that alone can

00:40:41help

00:40:41them to run it back now everyone is going to be aiming for them everyone's going to be gunning for

00:40:46them

00:40:46there's a target on them for sure if you thought they tried to foul and lock up jb before wait

00:40:53till now

00:40:53you got all these six eight and six nine wings that got done in by a six foot you know

00:41:00point guard who

00:41:01doesn't jump super high off the ground and he was dropping 45s and 50s on everybody every night

00:41:07they don't like that you know it's why everybody ran and started scrambling the way they did this

00:41:11offseason you know it's why philly became what they became it's you know no one no one is happy

00:41:17that the little old knicks and the loudest fan base in the world the most annoying fan base in the

00:41:23world according to them were able to pull us off right so um the target is there but they can

00:41:30pull

00:41:30it off absolutely i think one chemistry that locker room chemistry is so tight and together

00:41:36if we had the same talent on this team but a third of the chemistry or half of the chemistry

00:41:43we wouldn't

00:41:44have won you know i think chemistry was a very big part of it because it takes the egos out

00:41:48you know we're gonna run everything through cat now okay cool no problem cat there may be nights

00:41:54where you may get 10 points because of how many touches you will or won't get okay no problem you

00:42:00know a lot of teams aren't going for that a lot of players aren't going for that you know um

00:42:06oh gee it's your night tonight you saved the day josh hart you blew a layup but it's all good

00:42:11we got

00:42:11you we lift you up you know a lot of teams aren't you know adhering to those things and and

00:42:16uh living

00:42:17by those codes so chemistry is everything what can stop us hmm i don't know i don't know i mean

00:42:27it can

00:42:27happen for sure huh i said that's fine if you don't know it's okay i think i think i mean

00:42:34there is a

00:42:34reality of course that things can happen well the spurs without a doubt are going to be on a bloodhound

00:42:39mission they are going to have there's blood in the water you know they are absolutely furious about

00:42:45what happened they are definitely feeling like we they don't respect it of all people oh they respect

00:42:52they don't respect it the most okay they don't respect it because they feel like they gave it away

00:42:56because you got four out of five games where they had the game by 20 until the last five minutes

00:43:03or had the game by 30 right so look they don't respect it out of everyone else they don't respect

00:43:09it do you think the first time we do you think anybody in the east is a true challenger to

00:43:16the

00:43:16knicks philly without a doubt i mean i think you'd have to be dishonest with yourself to not think that

00:43:24philly isn't for real you know with that starting five now the bench whatever but with that starting

00:43:29five i mean jb ron you know maxi edgecombe i'm not an mb fan but mb is talented you know

00:43:37healthy

00:43:38you cannot rely on his health so i'm not all that worried about him but there's never been a team

00:43:43where lebron could really take time off right there's never been a team where he can like just

00:43:48he can have nights where he just copes until the fourth quarter and that team is here because he's with

00:43:53jb now who essentially does a lot of the things that he does you know at a very younger a

00:44:00very much

00:44:00younger age so it's uh you'd have to be silly to not think that philly doesn't have a real shot

00:44:06to

00:44:08really push the button i think opening night is going to be nuts you know and i knew it was

00:44:13going

00:44:13to shake that way i knew that when brawn went to philly the day they announced i said that's who

00:44:19we're playing opening that's going to be one you know the team that always wins the chip they get

00:44:23opening night at home because you get the banner and the rings and everything i knew i said we're

00:44:28playing philly opening night i should have put money on it i knew we were playing them because that is

00:44:32much ctv and if you've ever if you've never seen lebron go off you will that night brawn would like

00:44:40nothing more than to drop 50 on us and ruin the five thousand dollar ticket uh you know

00:44:48five thousand dollars per ticket nick's fans in the building he would like nothing more i'm telling

00:44:54you i wouldn't be surprised and i got us winning that game but i wouldn't be surprised if the opening

00:44:59score was 16 to 3 i wouldn't be surprised in the first three minutes wouldn't be surprised at all

00:45:05because lebron is going to come out on a dummy mission and go crazy that night because he loves

00:45:12playing in the garden he loves acting up in the garden and he's watching the banner come down

00:45:18oh really that just for the fun of it just for the competitive nature nothing personal but for

00:45:24the fun of it he's gonna come out on the dummy mission that night i even if we win i

00:45:28got brawn

00:45:29dropping 40 that night without a doubt 40 without a doubt well hey it's just the nature of the beast

00:45:33he he is going to act up that night even if we win which i have us winning everybody watching

00:45:39he's gonna act up that night just be prepared for it okay as all nick fans you go on to

00:45:45prepared for it you know what i mean that's all i'm saying be prepared for it brawn is gonna act

00:45:48up that night even if we demolished him he's gonna act up that night i can see it i could

00:45:53see it i'll be in the building for that uh open night should be a fun one do you think

00:45:57player which which player's next step matters the most towards the knicks winning another

00:46:02championship is a player you think has to level it up this season in order for the knicks to get

00:46:06back

00:46:06to where they want to go man it's weird to say it because i'm i'm a big fan of his

00:46:13game and he's had

00:46:14his moments of ups and downs but i'm gonna say macau uh because a lot happened this season with the

00:46:22ups and downs and the ebbs and flows of it all but we were able to get where we got

00:46:26in spite of it

00:46:27right we were able to get where we got regardless of it and then he had his moments where he

00:46:30did

00:46:31everything we needed him to do but i'm gonna say macau for sure and it feels weird saying step up

00:46:36and growth and everything because he's been around for so long he's you know a young veteran but he's

00:46:40a veteran i'm gonna say macau um i'm excited for a full season of of alvarado being home you know

00:46:48from

00:46:49day one perfect addition to the knicks for the story for the energy of it who he is where he's

00:46:54from

00:46:55i'm excited for a full season of um of alvarado as well but i think macau you know and that

00:47:00sounds weird because he's already great but i don't know if we can mask those ups and downs the

00:47:07way we did this season because again everyone is coming for blood now because no one is happy that

00:47:13we did this and let me tell you yeah as a diehard nick fan as the person who made the

00:47:18record and

00:47:19everything like that the reason why no teams and no sports journalists and no pundits on tv and talking

00:47:26the reason why everyone is anti-knicks and against us has nothing to do with the 15 players on the

00:47:32on

00:47:32the floor it's all about you and i it's all about the fact that as knicks fans whether we win

00:47:4065 games

00:47:42or lose 65 games our arrogance is through the roof it's about us and they'll tell you that like they

00:47:48don't have any issues with jalen brunson they don't have any issues with josh hart they hang out and go

00:47:53coke shop and it's saxophone with og and nobody they don't have any issues with the play they hate

00:47:58the knicks because of us they hate the fact that we're so brash and bold halliburton and jb are cool

00:48:06and i i'm not a fan of that when when halliburton and them knocked us out uh year before last

00:48:11and it

00:48:12came out that they were texan i wasn't a fan of that when he was on the roommates podcast i

00:48:17hated that

00:48:17because i was like why are you cool with him he's the enemy right he's opposition but they're cool so

00:48:22there's nothing halliburton hates us he hates you he hates guys he hates dexter he hates us

00:48:27like they hate nicks fans that's where the vitriol is for and that's that's what it's about it's not

00:48:35about the players on the floor so you know they're gunning for us they're coming for us they're not

00:48:39happy that we can finally say aha this is all justified so my my my guy jeff johnson from nicks

00:48:47film school he always says yeah yeah nicks for clicks industrial complex he's oh and we did an

00:48:52episode earlier this summer about that because i said to him is the nicks for clicks industrial

00:48:56complex dead and what i've heard from you and him both fellow fellow new yorkers he's like nah that

00:49:03hate's not going nowhere it's still gonna be here no and it's just he says it's going what he said

00:49:07to

00:49:07me and i thought it was interesting this guy he was like it's going to reform like it's going to

00:49:12reshape it kind of will go for a while but like a fee i think this was jeff's words like

00:49:16a phoenix is

00:49:16going to rise from the ashes and it's going to come back in new form just waiting to resurface

00:49:21again and it's always going to be there because you know you're right new yorkers we got a certain

00:49:25energy and absolutely it has nothing to do with the players on the court man like they don't really

00:49:31have any real enemies you know it's us man it's us going to you know philly and taking over it's

00:49:37going to san antonio on flights and taking over it's us you know as the wimby's walking in the hotel

00:49:44they're egging them it's us it's not the players on the floor you know they they really don't have

00:49:48an issue with them they don't like us they're like yo these new york nick fans man the way they

00:49:53way they move the way they talk you know they be top number three picking a draft and they talk

00:49:58they want to chip that that's the problem and now we can talk because we want to chip it is

00:50:11you know there's an issue in this party we got to stick together that amount of people got smaller

00:50:23because you talk you know just bringing it back to luxury tax a little bit for a second what did

00:50:28make of what leon rose and company did this off season bringing most of the band back except for

00:50:32mitchell robinson because you know uh dolan didn't want to go past the second apron there what did you

00:50:39make of what they did and what do you think of the roster heading into this season

00:50:44i like the uh i like the andre drummond move you know i think that's been a little underrated you

00:50:51know i'm seeing some nick fans support it i'm seeing some act a little funny about it i think

00:50:55it's an underrated move you know if you're asking him to be who he was 10 years ago in detroit

00:51:00or

00:51:00whatever no you know that that's a different story but we're not you know if you're asking him to be

00:51:05able to put up a good 20 plus minutes when cat is is on the bench i think he's more

00:51:11than capable of

00:51:12doing everything that he needs to do you're talking about one of the best rebounders of

00:51:16this generation of basketball right the past 15 years one of the best rebounders without a doubt

00:51:21um so you know i think there's i think that was a nice move i like the moves that happened

00:51:28the other

00:51:28day i wish there was room for a lot of them to stay on the team honestly because there's so

00:51:33much

00:51:33potential with all of those moves and some of them seem a little okay what would you do with

00:51:38bruce brown it may seem redundant but it's still bruce brown who was someone we coveted three years

00:51:42ago right when he was winning in denver we were like yo we got to get him when he's out

00:51:46of this so

00:51:46you know the fact that he's around i think the james wiseman move now obviously he's had his

00:51:52you know struggles in the league but you're still talking about the number two player who there was a

00:51:56debate over him going number one that year and he's 25 you know you're talking about a guy who

00:52:01is only a few years removed from being drafted number two and i think there's a lot of untapped

00:52:07potential there as far as his youth as far as the skill set whatever it is obviously it's going to

00:52:11come down to health but there's a lot that could be said for that i'm not saying he's going to

00:52:15reinvent anything but there's a lot that could be said for that um i think all five of them who

00:52:21leon

00:52:21went and and put on a training camp roster is like wow is there a way is there a way

00:52:26to kind of keep

00:52:27four or five of these guys i mean there isn't of course but there's a lot of there's a lot

00:52:32to look

00:52:33forward to i'm glad i don't have the job leon has because you got one spot maybe two right right

00:52:39and

00:52:40i think they do need to take advantage of two out of the five without a doubt i think they

00:52:44obviously

00:52:44need a third center agree and it would be nice to have another defensive-minded scorer on that wing

00:52:51you know um agbaje and you know there's there's guys where it's like man there's some real untapped

00:52:57potential there of things that could happen so i do like the moves that happened but the main thing

00:53:02was was keeping the band together for the most part obviously mitchell robinson there's pros and

00:53:07cons with that and how that went i understand what happened you know as a fan you don't want to

00:53:11see

00:53:11him go to boston of all places boston and philly would have been in two places you don't want to

00:58:55dope jordan brand everything like that dope so we went down there and i feel like i think the locks

00:59:38he was like yo how do you do that he's like how did you do that man like you just

00:59:42and just spit it in one take and it was he's like yo how did you do that like he

00:59:46was really into

00:59:47it and he was really floored and enamored by it so um you know that was dope man and he

00:59:52was super

00:59:53humble you know off the rip he was you know seven feet you know you know what i mean but

00:59:58super humble you knew he was going to be number one pick when he was done playing his one year

01:00:02everything like that and um he was just so humble and you know just showed so much love and grace

01:00:08and um i always remember that story anytime i see him anytime i rock his jersey i remember that
