20:26It's all coming together for Derek McInnes and Rangers right now.
20:31It's very much the opposite for Celtic.
20:34Who were an improved outfit, certainly from last week.
20:38But still, they couldn't find a way to break Rangers down.
20:42And so it's Rangers who have the victory here at Celtic Park.
20:48It finishes. Celtic nil. Rangers won.
20:56A week and a day to forget for Celtic,
20:59as Rangers overwhelmed them in pretty much every single department.
21:03Let's talk a wee bit about tactics first, guys.
21:06Andy, Rangers, man for man like last week, aggressive and completely dominant.
21:11Yeah, they were.
21:12I think you could probably rinse and repeat exactly what we said last weekend.
21:16I thought Rangers were on the front foot.
21:18I thought they were aggressive.
21:19In these games, we always talk about individual battles where games can be won.
21:23And it's another week where I'll probably say the same thing,
21:26that I think Rangers won all 11.
21:27I thought they were absolutely excellent again today.
21:29They were.
21:29Scott, were you surprised at how Celtic lined up today,
21:32probably to try and combat Rangers' style from last week?
21:36Yeah, I thought Martin tried to change it up a little bit.
21:38But yet again, I'm going to echo what Andy says there.
21:43The Rangers won way too many battles.
21:45Individual wanted the ball more.
21:47Second balls, the amount of times they locked teams in, won headers, flick-ons.
21:52And it's not like Celtic, especially at home as well,
21:54because Celtic's had a fantastic record at home,
21:57especially since Martin's been there before and coming back.
22:00So it's hard to take to watch it.
22:03But look, they've got three weeks now to go and sort it
22:06and see if they can hopefully turn it into a positive when they come back against Motherwell.
22:10It's been an incredibly disappointing, tough week for the club and for Martin O'Neill this week.
22:16Do you feel that Martin O'Neill has still got the backing of the majority of the supporters?
22:21Yeah, definitely. Look, he's still sitting top of the league at this moment in time.
22:24I mean, would have liked to have been eight points clear, a hundred percent.
22:27And that would have been Martin's talk before the game saying,
22:30like, if we win this, we go eight points clear and everything's forgotten about last week.
22:34But now it's added pressure because Rangers have caught within two points now.
22:38And the momentum's now on Rangers, if I'm honest.
22:41And that's a hard, hard thing to take, especially at home in front of your own fans with no away
22:46fans.
22:46You mentioned individual battles, Andy. Talk us through what you noticed on the pitch today.
22:52Yeah, well, I think you could see Celtic's approach very early on was completely different to last week.
22:57They wanted to try and bypass Rangers' pressure.
23:00And as soon as I felt that the game was going to be a battle, I felt as if that
23:05gave Rangers the advantage.
23:06And I think you can see, and we trimmed this down to 90 seconds.
23:10This could have been quite easy. It had been four minutes long.
23:11The amount of first contacts, second contacts, any time there was a loose ball.
23:16And every time here, it's Dan Neal that's highlighted because the amount of times that,
23:20A, he was landing on the loose balls, but B, he was driving the team forward, playing forward.
23:25And I thought the combination of McCannion, Fernandez defensively,
23:28and Nadiri in particular, playing up against Austin Trustee,
23:32just allowed Rangers to win as many first contacts as they wanted.
23:36But had so many bodies in the midfield area surrounding the ball.
23:39And in this scenario here, I mean, Celtic are as open as your socks.
23:42I don't know what's going on here.
23:44But Rangers just had so many opportunities to pick up the loose balls and spring into counterattacks.
23:49And they looked as if, to me, Tommel, that Rangers never had a game Thursday.
23:53And it looked as if Celtic had a game Thursday.
23:54I thought they just looked as if they were full of energy, full of enthusiasm to try and make an
24:00impact on the game.
24:01And you can see that because as much as we're talking about the willingness to land on second balls,
24:05I mean, look at all these clips here, whether it's Negriam, whether it's McGregor,
24:09whether it's Bauer, their willingness to get close to a Rangers player and make contact.
24:13Whereas you look at Daniel in these scenarios,
24:15you know, swarming Celtic midfielders no matter where they are on the pitch.
24:18But again, fundamentally, when they land on it, keeping it.
24:22And then this is the last dying embers of the game.
24:25This is Celtic's last opportunity and look at the willingness of Ryan Nadiri
24:28to make sure it's not an easy pick out for Callum McGregor or Austin Trustee to get their eyes up
24:33and play it up the pitch.
24:34He lands on the second ball, dives into the corner flag, a bit of time wasting,
24:38and within five seconds here, it's a full-time whistle.
24:40You literally could have picked any one of the players today if you were highlighting who played well in a
24:45Rangers shirt.
24:46You know, there were so many standout performances and that's a brilliant thing for our manager.
24:50Derek McInnes must have been absolutely overjoyed with it.
24:52Yeah, absolutely. And I think in Nadiri's instance, it was the first contacts and it was the willingness to
24:59not give up on loose balls or lost causes. He just chased everything.
25:02I thought he harried the Celtics in the house all day long.
25:05I thought Daniel was absolutely terrific again this week.
25:07Good couple of games for him.
25:08Absolutely. And he came under a lot of pressure at the start of the season.
25:10And he probably admit quite fairly so, but he's really grown into his role.
25:14And you're starting to see relationships being built now with Raskin and Daniel in the midfield,
25:18Fernandes and McKenna defensively, and Kelsey and Nadiri are starting to blossom at the top end of the pitch as
25:23well.
25:24Let's talk Celtics, Scott. Why were they so disjointed?
25:28Yeah, and look, it starts with not winning enough battles. Look, they do win the ball here.
25:33Negrin, first thought, can we play forward? Can we go and play through their press, if we're honest? No.
25:38Right? Play Scales so Scales can drive forward. Sloppy pass out to Kieran. Kieran's having to stretch for it.
25:44Then, look, Scales have got lots of time here. And because they're under a little bit of pressure,
25:49he ends up kicking the ball out. There's not great pressure on there. And for a Celtic player,
25:53you should be building out here. This is as well, trustees on the ball, speed of play. Can we hit
25:57Scales?
25:57You should go straight away to go out wide. And for me, if you're playing against Rangers that are man
26:02-to-man,
26:02move the ball side-to-side as quick as you possibly can. Trusty, too long. Scales then got two options
26:08here.
26:09Can he go and break the lines or can he go around the press yet again? But they have to
26:12do it with a bit of quality.
26:13And it's that kind of struggling to make a decision on the ball.
26:18It's like an extra touch, an extra touch. And then Cal comes, always keeps showing for the ball.
26:24And then from where they started, they end back up at the goalie. And out of all that,
26:30they end up having to ping the ball along because Scales takes a touch on his left foot. Ball goes
26:35long.
26:36Celtic don't get first contact. Don't make second contact. And then Fernandes jumps inside here.
26:43And then this is your two 10s in here. For me, you want McEwen to go and jump. McEwen thinks
26:49the ball's
26:49going to go central, doesn't jump. Negrin goes and continues his run with McEanya all the way.
26:55And look, it's a great ball for McEanya. And then you can see where Daniel is. Look,
27:01McEwen should be coming back in there, locking that off. And Daniel gets a shot for the edge of the
27:06ball.
27:08And then this, a little bit different. When the first ball, Carter Vickers wins the first ball.
27:12Karnas plays forward. Negrin first touch forward, breaks the lines. Look, McEwen brilliant. First touch
27:18goes forward. Girard makes a good run, goes out to Kieran. And look, it's a fantastic strike. And
27:24another day that maybe goes in. But those were few and far between those instances. You can see the
27:29positivity of how quick that attack was there. The ball goes back to trusty. The ball goes to Scales. Scales
27:36looks
27:36up and he's double thinking. Because I think it's just a lack of belief and a lack of speed on
27:42the
27:42ball. Because they can do it. I've seen them do it the last four, five, six weeks.
27:45Of course they can do it. But I suppose the two previous results, you know, the game at Ibricks
27:49and the midweek defeat have affected the way that the players are thinking. They're not playing
27:52with that confidence and that speed of thought. Everything's a bit guarded.
27:55Yeah, confidence is the biggest thing in football. And momentum as well. You can see Rangers
27:59have obviously got that momentum from last week. And they've continued it into this game.
28:03Celtic had the game during the week. And another defeat, losing three goals. So it'll be in the back
28:08of their head. And that extra touch is probably lacking that little bit of confidence at this
28:14moment in time. OK, let's now get the post-match thoughts of Derek McInnes.
28:18I do think it's such an important win for us. I think to follow up in the back of last
28:23week
28:24was really important for us. I think in the context of the season, it's just three points. And it gets
28:30three points close to the Celtic. So we understood if we lost the game that the gap starts to put
28:37that distance just starts to feel a bit uncomfortable for us. So we knew the importance
28:40of the game, but it's still very early on. There's still 80 odd points to play for.
28:46But I do think that winning here, particularly because we've got a young team and you get the
28:51benefits of having a young team. And part of that is winning at places less can only give them
28:56some much needed confidence and added belief on the back of last week.
29:00At 1-0, I thought we deservedly went in front. And I thought we were just guilty of passing up
29:04so many opportunities. And while Celtic have got such an attack threat when they're playing
29:08in front of their own fans, and Martin's obviously trying a few things to try and find an answer,
29:14you're never totally comfortable because they've got that quality. But thankfully,
29:18one was enough today. And we've said to the players some days that it will not be enough,
29:22and we need to be far more clinical. But, you know, the fans weren't here,
29:27but we know they're watching and we want them to enjoy their Sunday. That's something for them
29:32to enjoy. It's something for us to enjoy in the dressing room. But I want to stress the fact
29:37that it is only three points and it's still early on in the campaign.
29:41Denny McInnes there. Rangers momentum is huge right now, Andy. They've won eight of their last nine games,
29:46six straight wins, five clean sheets in there. It was a sticky start for Denny McInnes at
29:51Rangers. But he's found a formula right now that's looking very, very strong. He's found the right
29:57mix of players and the formation that he likes. And certainly over these last two games, it's been
30:01hugely impressive. Yeah, I think they're spot on. I think he's found his personnel, he's found his
30:05shape, he's found his players that he can trust in big games. And I think during the difficult start,
30:11it didn't resemble a Denny McInnes side, sorry, you know, looking fragile defensively,
30:16not really creative at the top end of the pitch. But the stats you've just ringed off there,
30:20eight wins in the last nine, not conceding goals anymore. You look at the energy and enthusiasm
30:24they're playing with now. That resembles a Denny McInnes side to me. And like you said,
30:28he's found the players that can trust him with no Europe. I'm not saying that's a good thing.
30:32You know, Rangers might be in European football come December, but they'll be on a week-to-week
30:35basis. So you don't envision there's going to be a lot of changes personnel-wise, which could
30:40obviously be a good thing for them as well.
30:41You spoke about any player could have been picked as a kind of pack today to analyse,
30:46but Ryan Naderi, he was excellent. He laid the line so well. His work rate was for
30:52Arno and obviously popped up with a goal that wins the match.
30:55Yeah. And again, almost symptomatic to the game. You know, Scales makes first contact,
30:59but who's there to pick up a loose ball? It's a Rangers player. Minsu Kim takes a good
31:02first touch, unleashes it. I don't think, Scott, you'll be too happy, obviously,
31:06with the goalkeeper's part in this, because for me, he's got to try and divert that away from Denny.
31:09Yeah, he's got to push that wide, and you can see Negrin as well. Negrin's on the area at that
31:14point in time. And naturally, your midfielder, the attacking midfielder, wants to go forward.
31:18And your striker's in there, picking up second balls, and you can see Negrin there, looking,
31:23looking, trusty, standing, and there's only one person that's on the move in the box.
31:27Yeah, they're static in the box, the defence there. It's seven versus five is in Celtic.
31:31And Naderi, he's doing what all the strikers do. He's presuming the goalkeeper's going to drop it.
31:38In terms of Naderi, I think scenarios like that, that's almost been questioned to him,
31:45is he got that striker's instinct to score that type of goals? I've always thought that
31:49strikers should be scoring five tap-ins a season, and he's starting to show that type in his game.
31:54You actually look at his catalogue of goals this year, they've been pretty simple goals,
31:58but he's now getting in the areas that he probably wasn't getting over the previous year or so.
32:01I thought his work rate for me stood out. Phenomenal. Yeah, it really was.
32:05Yeah, it's phenomenal. Another player who was possibly the best of the bunch was Makanya.
32:10Yeah, I think the only negative about Makanya is I don't know how much longer he's going to be a
32:14Rangers player.
32:15I just think he's an absolute Rolls-Royce defender, and you're talking about going to Celtic Park,
32:1960,000 Celtic fans, and we've seen some of the best Rangers players and the best Rangers teams struggle.
32:24But you just look at the composure that he finds himself in.
32:28And, you know, we talked about Liam Scales earlier and the pressure he was under.
32:32This is real pressure he's under, but he's always shown for the ball. He's always calm under pressure.
32:36He's looking to try and bypass pressure whether he's stepping away from players.
32:39Look at this one. This is £12 million. He's in a 1v1 tussle, and he brings it down on the
32:45half volley.
32:45And he's got the presence and calmness of mind to then stay on the ball, lend it back to his
32:50goalkeeper.
32:50And this is Camilo Duran, who's arguably one of the best pressers in the league.
32:54Going back towards your own goal, and he drops him a wee shoulder, goes back to Pandur.
32:59And then, I mean, this is the type of scenario you won't normally see your centre half in.
33:03He's in a 1v1 situation in the left wing with Callum McGregor.
33:06A little big scoop over the leg, drives into space. Again, little Cruyff turn.
33:11I mean, I think the biggest compliment I can give Makanya is I think he goes so unnoticed in a
33:17lot of games,
33:17because he just does the basics ever so well. And every game he seems as if he's coming off with
33:22a clean pair of shots.
33:23I've never seen him make a side tackle. And that's due to his positional sense being absolutely fantastic,
33:28and never allowing himself to be in much danger. And this is two minutes to go.
33:33I don't think Derek McInnes will be wanting to do too many nutmegs at his halfway line.
33:37But again, just shows that calmness he's got. And look, Derek McInnes has mentioned a couple of times
33:43about it's a really young side. I mean, Makanya's 22.
33:46Yeah. And it just looks as if he's an experienced pro.
33:49And if this counted, I mean, it would have been goal of the season.
33:53It is a fantastic strike. It's an unbelievable, unbelievable strike.
33:58And when me and Bruno were watching the game, I was as shocked as anyone when that hit the back
34:01of the net.
34:01But then you can see clearly for the rebound.
34:03Bauer's got to do better with the header. He's got to head it wide.
34:05He's headed it through the middle. But take nothing away.
34:08Kanya's touch here. I know it hits his hand, but he's not exactly meant that.
34:12But what a finish this is. Yeah. It's the right decision in the end from VAR.
34:15It's definitely the right decision. But I fought Makanya all day long.
34:18Like, really, really good. Composed.
34:20Yeah. And again, Tormo that might not have been noticed at the game.
34:25No. James Penrash comes off. Hassan comes on.
34:27£6 million Hassan, who's lightning quick.
34:29And Makanya goes left back and defends him in 1v1 scenarios for the last 20 minutes of the game.
34:34So, he's almost taking the responsibility on himself that if this is a danger man coming on the pitch
34:39and I'm playing left back now, I'm going to go and get tight to him, make pressure,
34:42and I'm going to try and nullify that threat that Celtic have got.
34:45And I thought for the full game and for the best part of the most of his Rangers career,
34:49I think he's been absolutely outstanding.
34:51Yeah, I would agree.
34:52A bad day at the office for Martin O'Neill. Let's hear what he thought of it.
34:57It's certainly not the end of the world, believe it or not.
34:59I know it's hard to imagine, but we're still two points clear in the league.
35:03And we have international break coming up now and it's a time just to reflect on the start of the
35:10season,
35:11see where we are positioned and take it on from there.
35:16I thought that there wasn't much between the teams, that the Rangers scored their goal.
35:21We had a couple of chances ourselves, strangely enough.
35:25I think Kieran hits the bar just about 90 seconds before they score.
35:28And things like that there, when the game is tight, can change.
35:32But on reflection, yes.
35:34I mean, again, I get back to the football club has suffered defeat in the past.
35:39I've done that and it's a matter of fighting back.
35:42And that's what you have to try and do.
35:43I think there are always big questions.
35:45When you lose football matches, you've got to.
35:48It's the nature of it.
35:49You have to.
35:49I think you have to accept responsibility, which I do remember.
35:53This is the team.
35:54This is my team.
35:55And I am responsible for that.
35:58And of course, yeah, I have to, as I said, introspection.
36:01Every defeat is really painful and it hurts every bit as much now as it did before.
36:08So, yeah, I have to, yes, reflect on things myself, see what I can do better to help the team.
36:17And yeah, so that's something that I will genuinely think about.
36:21Martin O'Neill there saying that he didn't think there was much in the game, Scott.
36:25Would you agree with that?
36:26Look, it's hard because he's been chucked in right after the game.
36:31And no, look, I don't, I think Rangers were a standout today.
36:34Like Celtic hit five shots, one on target at home.
36:37That's not Celtic.
36:37No, it's not good enough.
36:38And for me, there was a big gap in the last two games.
36:41And it shows there was a Thursday night game for Celtic.
36:43And Rangers used that to benefit them with their energy and their willingness to go after the ball.
36:4915 shots for Rangers, eight on target.
36:51And I suppose that tells its own story about the game, really.
36:54Yeah, especially in front of 60,000 fans.
36:57And look, I think we're kind of delighted with this.
37:00But this is fantastic play from Rangers as well.
37:03Like Gassama, it's a fantastic touch around the corner of his trusty.
37:07And like, he's done everything right.
37:08But it's a brilliant block as well by Carter Vickers.
37:10Because that puts Rangers 2-0 before halftime.
37:13And it does keep Celtic in the game at this moment in time.
37:17And yet again, you can see Penn Rice, he's willing this to drive in the park at pace as well.
37:20He believes he wants to score a goal.
37:22And like, Rangers got two, three, four bodies in the box there.
37:25Wanting to go and get the second ball.
37:26Kim, inside, plays a little one-two, give and go.
37:29And I think he makes the wrong decision just here.
37:31I think he should play it wide.
37:33But he's confident at that point in time and has a shot and he's unlucky.
37:36But it's too many opportunities at the Celtic goal.
37:40And then you've got this going around the back as well.
37:43How unlucky is this, Andy?
37:43Yeah, it was.
37:44And again, it's people running forward to try and join the attack.
37:47And I think Sinis Alom, you see the replay,
37:49he just gets a really good nick on it to divert it away from Ryan Nadiri.
37:53Then Cam and Carter Vickers try to do as much as he possibly can
37:55to try and divert it away to safety.
37:57But, I mean, this came through a spell for me where it was just constant pressure
38:01for Rangers for 25, 30 minutes.
38:03And they had the bulk of their opportunities within that spell.
38:06And all of it, you look at the Penrice one, the Gassama one,
38:08the Nadiri one with Dujon Sterli.
38:10It was just people willing to run forward and make a difference in the game.
38:14And for me, the comparison to last week to this week is probably just the amount of goals
38:19that Rangers scored.
38:20I thought it was the same level of dominance.
38:22It felt more comfortable than a 1-0.
38:23Yeah, definitely.
38:24And especially in that second half.
38:25I thought the first half was quite frantic at times.
38:27I thought obviously the Gassama chance is the other real big chance in the game
38:31that Rangers can try and profit from.
38:32But in the second half in particular, I thought Rangers were in complete control.
38:35Yeah.
38:36Scott, Austin Trustee thought he'd scored early on in the match.
38:39But actually, when you look it back, Rangers have held a great line.
38:41Look, for me, Bowers came in.
38:43He's went fake to take the cross.
38:45It's a fantastic ball by Negrin.
38:47Scales goes early.
38:48But Rangers line is very, very good.
38:50It stays strong the whole time.
38:52Scales is a yard off there.
38:53Take nothing away.
38:54Yet again, centre-half's finished.
38:55Trusty, unbelievable.
38:56Two centre-halves for Rangers and Celtic with great finishes.
38:59But look, I think the first 15 minutes of the game,
39:03Celtic started really, really positive after them.
39:05First five minutes of the second half as well, they had the Donovan chance.
39:08That was a huge chance.
39:09Great save.
39:10But then that, Celtic just kind of fell away.
39:13It looked like they lacked energy and didn't believe in what they were doing.
39:16And it's hard to see because the way they've been playing all the way through the season,
39:20Duran, who's scoring goals, like Jan's a huge miss for them.
39:24And I think six months ago to a year, nobody would be saying that.
39:27But Jan has very, very good work rate, willingness and desire to run forward as well.
39:31Given the amount of attacking players they have and the amount that they brought on,
39:35they still only mustered up one shot in target.
39:38Why do you think that is?
39:39Why, with all those attackers on the pitch, were they still not finding a way to get more efforts and
39:44go?
39:45Rangers defended really well.
39:46It was solid.
39:47They felt that they could go 1v1.
39:49And as you've seen in some of the clips there,
39:51Mekhania dealt with the pace of Duran, Hasan, not a problem whatsoever.
39:55And I think it's more belief in that final third.
39:58And play with a little bit of freedom, a little bit of confidence as well,
40:00because I know it's not came off for them the last couple of games, but they need to come together.
40:05And one good thing about football is you have got another game, but they've got three weeks off now.
40:10And do you firmly believe that they'll turn that round?
40:12Yeah, they've scored goals.
40:14They've created chances in the last seven games before this game.
40:18And they've done really, really well.
40:19And for me, I think you've got to believe in Martin, you've got to believe in the lads,
40:23because at the start of the season, how far they were ahead of Rangers,
40:26in those three or four games right at the start, you've got to go back to have that belief.
40:31But Derek's done a fantastic job.
40:32He's managed to turn Rangers around because there's a lot of doubters on Derek as well.
40:36And I can safely say, I wasn't sure how the Rangers season was going to go,
40:40and I thought Celtic would run away with the title.
40:42But he's changed everyone's mindset and everyone's...
40:45What are you thinking now?
40:46It's still, Celtic's still sitting top at this moment in time.
40:50But after those two games, Rangers are sitting with the momentum and Celtic got a lot to figure out.
40:55A lot of pundits, I guess, Andy, you may be one of them,
40:57that have changed their opinions over the course of the last three weeks.
41:00You know, because a lot of people at the start of the season,
41:02looking at Rangers in Europe and a couple of their early performances,
41:05would have been saying, right, you know, in Celtic,
41:07at that point we're firing, you know, Celtic have got us wrapped up.
41:10So were you one of them?
41:12Oh, absolutely. They never won in the first five games.
41:14They got knocked out of Jablonets in the Europa.
41:16We'd done the game and it wasn't a great watch.
41:19And then they've put on the most incredible run.
41:21Like you said, they've won eight and nine,
41:23and they're not conceding goals.
41:25They're looking much more threatening at the top end of the pitch.
41:27So at one point, I actually had Rangers finishing third.
41:30I'm certainly not sticking with that.
41:31I think now we've got a real title race in their hands.
41:33And for a long time, I did agree with Bruni that
41:36I thought it was probably going to be a case that Celtic were going to get
41:39eight points creed after these two games and then probably sail off
41:42and make it a comfortable lead.
41:44I don't see that happening now.
41:45I think it's going to be a real race this year.
41:46Should be exciting stuff.
41:48Of course, next week sees the return of international football.
