00:06have prompted a response from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
00:10Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin says such conduct would not be consistent
00:16with the standards of professionalism, integrity and lawful conduct expected of TTPS officers.
00:22Her statement follows a TV6 News report on Saturday,
00:26in which the former PDO detainee described what he says happened during his arrest in June.
00:33DCP Martin says the TTPS does not condone the use of excessive or unlawful force by any police officer.
00:42However, she noted that since the former detainee intends to take legal action,
00:47it would be inappropriate to comment on the specifics of his allegations
00:51or prejudice any investigation or legal proceedings.
00:55The fact that a person, she adds, was detained under emergency powers
01:00and subsequently released without charge following the conclusion of the state of emergency
01:05does not diminish the importance of ensuring that all interactions between police officers
01:11and members of the public are conducted lawfully and professionally.
01:15DCP Martin says anyone who believes a police officer has acted unlawfully or improperly
01:22is entitled to have the allegation reported and properly examined.
01:27The TTPS, she says, will allow the appropriate processes to determine the facts.
