00:13The chronograph is a wristwatch with an integrated stop function. The word
00:20chronograph is coming from the word chronos and graph so it means time
00:27writer. The manufacturer chronograph at IWC was a special technical challenge
00:32because we wanted a special chronograph, a special display. We had to invent a
00:37double counter system where we brought together the hour counter and the minute
00:41counter in one sub dial at 12 o'clock. We also integrated a column wheel and the
00:47flyback function. There are two possibilities to control the functions
00:51of a chronograph. One is the column wheel and the other one is the chrono cam.
00:56The more sophisticated version is the column wheel which we use in our
01:01chronographs. For the IWC Calibres we decided to use the more traditional
01:06column wheel. Our new Calibre 89 chronograph movement is a very special
01:11movement and from a watchmaker's point of view it's special for two reasons.
01:16First of all it has the counter of the minutes and the hours positioned at 12
01:21o'clock which we have not had before and the second specification which was given
01:25that we had to have a flyback on the chronograph system. The flyback function
01:30is not found in every chronograph. Unlike a normal chronograph which you have to
01:35start and then stop and then reset our flyback can continuously run and you can
01:40reset always during the counting system. The flyback function can be found in the
01:45Portuguese chronograph classic or in the engineer chronograph racer.
