Join us on Beyond the Headlines: How do we know when someone is struggling—and what can we do before it becomes a crisis?

Mental health concerns are not always visible. Changes in behavior, withdrawing from others, or losing interest in things once enjoyed may be signs that someone needs support.

Licensed Psychologist and Psychometrician Dr. Sheravi Mae Galang shares insights on recognizing warning signs, starting difficult conversations, offering support, and knowing when professional help may be needed.

Because knowing what to look for—and how to respond—can make a difference.

Look Deeper. Think Better.

01:00Your perfect latte is ready.
01:03Coffee first, then everything else.
01:07Are we taking care of our minds as much as we take care of our bodies?
01:13Good afternoon. Welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:15I'm DJ Moises, and today's conversation is brought to us by Coffee First.
01:20Mental health is part of our everyday lives,
01:24affecting how we deal with stress, relationships, work, school, and life's challenges.
01:31Today, we talk about how to keep our minds healthy
01:34and how to recognize when it's time to ask for help.
01:39Let's look deeper and think better.
01:42With us as clinical psychologists, we have Ms. Shara V. May Galang.
01:47Hello, Shara. Welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:50Good afternoon.
01:51Maybe you will need to make some shout-outs with your friends and our viewers.
01:56Shout-out to my friends and family.
01:59Hello, friends and family.
02:01So, on a more serious note, when we talk about the words mental health,
02:09what are we exactly talking about?
02:13Just to level set.
02:15Okay, so this is actually a misconception.
02:17Like, a lot of people are afraid to go to us or come to us.
02:23Because they're always mad-look at me as a psychologist and so on.
02:28It's like something in my mind or in my mental health disorder.
02:33But mental health is actually a spectrum.
02:36So, we all have mental health.
02:37So, it's either we're just like, if I stress, are we reacting normally to it?
02:42Or are we reacting in a maladaptive manner?
02:47So, it's like that.
02:48So, it's like mental health.
02:50And that's a good point.
02:52Because if we can talk casually, like I'm going to get a haircut.
02:57Yes.
02:58Or I'm going to get a massage.
03:00I'm going to the gym.
03:02So, these are actions or steps that are commonly used when we would take care of our bodies.
03:11But why is it the challenge for people to exactly articulate why mental health matters to them
03:18and the steps that they are in fact taking or the help that's needed?
03:23A lot of people disregard mental health because they can't see it
03:27or they don't realize that it's actually mental health.
03:31So, a lot of patients and clients actually complain about physical stuff
03:36such as headaches, sakit ang kalawasan, dili katulog, magkurog, or even ulcers, mga gastric.
03:48And it turns out, it's also related to their mental health.
03:51So, if you ask them, stress decay or burn out.
03:55So, yeah.
03:56Different kinds of mental health problems.
03:58So, when you've mentioned stress, there are also emotional stress that a human being like me
04:09that we go through, like frustration about work, for example, or the pressures of work, for example,
04:19or in other people's case, heartbreak, so these are emotional stress that people, everyday persons go through.
04:30So, how can they exactly tell that it is a process, a healing process that they go through
04:37or a normal emotion that an everyday person go through?
04:41Or is it already the time to ask for help?
04:46That's actually a good question.
04:50There's two poles when it comes to that kind of situation.
04:54So, it's like they don't know it's a disorder, it's something to, time to go to a professional.
05:00At the same time, it's just a normal kind of reaction.
05:06So, basically, what we have to look into is like the duration or how distressing it is.
05:12It's like it's not going to work, it's not going to go to school, it's not going to sleep, it's
05:18not going to sleep.
05:19So, basically, it's going to disrupt your daily life.
05:24And the duration is where it's going to be.
05:27It's not going to be sad, it's going to be depression.
05:30So, it's going to be a problem.
05:32So, what are, because you've mentioned certain signs, and unfortunately, some friends or family,
05:41well-meaning as they are, sometimes they will tell the person it's just a face,
05:46or why don't you get some sleep, or take a rest.
05:50But what are the signs, man said, that everyday person should be more mindful,
05:56so that when somebody comes to them, and then will tell them that perhaps he or she is going through
06:04mental health challenges,
06:05what are the signs that they can at least see that, yeah, I think this person needs help?
06:11So, probably, other than those what I mentioned, siguro ang mga behavioral signs nga, usually, mabantayan sa other people.
06:21So, let's say, irritable, or ka na magsihig kalagot, mga yunyan, or dili naganahan mo ga sa kwarto, yunyan,
06:29or dili naganahan mo socialize, isolate, so mas na usually, or substance use.
06:34So, yeah, it's still related to mental health, kaya ilang coping, kung dili mag ka ng exercise sa gym,
06:40mula ag ilahak kay ka ng murag mal-adaptive, which is to smoke, to drink so much alcohol, and so
06:48on.
06:48So, I think if I am to understand what you just said, at least for the last two questions that
06:55we talked about,
06:56there is a change in behavior, no?
06:59Yes.
06:59Like, probably, they don't engage in a particular substance, but because of coping mechanisms, they do.
07:06Or they used to go out frequently, or do certain activities, like go to the gym, but they suddenly lost
07:15interest, no?
07:16But you mentioned a period of time.
07:19What is normally, or a reasonable period of time that we would say,
07:24Agoy, this person must be going through something serious?
07:28That's also a tricky question.
07:30As I've mentioned, as you've mentioned, actually, it's a progress, it's a process.
07:35So, let's say, for example,
07:37wala takay ba nga, wala takay ba nga,
07:39a mo sad nga kay, mabot sag months, or let's say weeks, pero,
07:43Like a heart, na, seryoso, like a heartbreak, normally, it takes a longer time.
07:48Yeah, let's say, grief, kanay?
07:49Grief, grief, correct.
07:50So, we really cannot pinpoint, like, dapat one week okay na ka, or one month.
07:56So, we really cannot say the exact duration, but rather,
08:24Actually, while you were saying, and, and to use it in parallel ba with physical, kanang, health concerns,
08:34because, I think, murag, well, accustomed na manta sa ka ng mga physical symptoms,
08:39but I think you brought up a good point, no?
08:41Okay, like, for example, for a physical, kanang, challenge, like, labad akong ulo,
08:46na may labad akong ulo because of attributable,
08:49kanang, like, wakong katulog, or nalipasan kong gutom.
08:53But I think I would have to agree that just like with physical health,
08:57we don't self-diagnose.
09:00No, I think also when there are certain signs na mental health is already challenged,
09:06it's good to already ask for help rather than just self-diagnose
09:11or diagnose the other person as if I'm a doctor.
09:16Sige, now let's talk about masking,
09:17because there are also those who are effective
09:21in terms of not showing their, kanang, real emotional baggage,
09:28if we call it that way.
09:30So, di ba naman ay mo yun sila nga,
09:31oh, happy man on dato siya, why did this person decide to do that?
09:35No, murag, for the past couple of weeks, murag, happy man siya.
09:39We did not see this coming.
09:41Yes.
09:41There's actually different lenses when you look at it.
09:44First is, Filipinos are really good at it.
09:47Let's say, for example, humor.
09:50We deny our problems through humor.
09:52I mean, it's okay.
09:54But,
09:55mawala ginapod ang concern nga,
09:56ala, mali pa yun mong kito siya nga tao.
09:58Nga mawala itong usual nga coping mechanism
10:01or defense mechanism ba to joke about our problems.
10:05At the same time, in another lens,
10:08a lot of people actually create this mask,
10:12nga happy sila,
10:13kaya when they're alone,
10:14they're actually sad.
10:16So, murag, ato lang sila happy ba?
10:18Nga ikaabot sa balay,
10:19marag,
10:19marag,
10:20mo shut down.
10:20Actually, because I also went through mental health challenges,
10:27and I also decided to ask for help,
10:30and I'm glad that I did.
10:31But this happened actually yesterday,
10:33long time ago.
10:35Pero,
10:36there's one thing that friends and family noticed,
10:39and now,
10:41kanang saktosad sila,
10:42which is kanang,
10:43kanang very gamayang change in behavior.
10:46Because I can fake a smile.
10:48I can be very smiling,
10:50which was the coping mechanism that I used
10:53when I was going through that.
10:55But there's something that was lacking,
10:57and it was my family and friends that noticed it.
11:00Ang akumagong,
11:01some na endearment is sarcasm.
11:04Good or bad as it is,
11:05but that's part of my endearment or humor.
11:09And that's the one that's missing.
11:11And then when they told me that,
11:12that's when I realized,
11:13nabitaw, no?
11:14I can fake a smile,
11:15but I could not fake sarcasm
11:17or sense of humor.
11:18So,
11:19that's the little signs
11:20that my friends were able to spot.
11:22And good thing that they
11:23brought that up with me.
11:24So now,
11:25let's move into the person,
11:28himself or herself.
11:29What are the things,
11:31Manzad,
11:31that we need to do,
11:32everyday persons,
11:33to keep the mind healthy?
11:36Okay.
11:36So,
11:37there are actually a lot of things.
11:38It doesn't need to be expensive.
11:41Okay.
11:42The first thing,
11:42mental health,
11:43it's a lot of good psychologist,
11:45and so on.
11:45So,
11:46we can do small things,
11:49like,
11:49even being mindful of,
11:51let's say,
11:52eating.
11:53Usually,
11:54we're eating so fast,
11:58we don't appreciate our food,
12:00or let's say,
12:01if it's late,
12:01we're going to be late.
12:03So,
12:04little things like that
12:05could actually help
12:06our mental health
12:07through mindful
12:09doing of stuff.
12:11So,
12:12aside from that,
12:13we also need to engage
12:14in other activities,
12:15such as,
12:16pikal balbaro,
12:18jogging,
12:19or singing,
12:20which is common good
12:21in Pinoy.
12:22So,
12:23yeah,
12:23there are a lot of things,
12:24your hobbies,
12:25or reading,
12:26whatever makes you
12:26feel relaxed.
12:28How important is sleep?
12:31Oh,
12:31very important.
12:32It's actually,
12:34it's,
12:35let's say,
12:36it's part of a lot
12:38of mental health disorders,
12:40let's say,
12:40depression,
12:41bipolar,
12:43so,
12:43yeah,
12:44mental health is,
12:46entangled with sleep as well.
12:48So,
12:49kita,
12:50wala kay tulog,
12:51di ba,
12:52kabantay ta,
12:52atong mood,
12:53kaya,
12:53irritable,
12:54kung wala tay tulog.
12:55Correct.
12:55So,
12:56yan na,
12:56or the focus.
12:58Focus,
12:58lack of attention.
12:59Now,
13:00let's talk about
13:01katong parents,
13:02or guardians
13:03of kanang adolescents,
13:06or the younger population.
13:09The usual challenge,
13:10and you can comment on this,
13:11is how to teach
13:13resilience.
13:14Okay.
13:15Di ba,
13:15kay?
13:16That's good.
13:16Okay.
13:17Okay.
13:18Part of,
13:19muraman sa siya,
13:20just like physical strength,
13:21for us to develop the muscles,
13:23we have to learn
13:24how to carry heavier weights.
13:26Yes.
13:27Okay,
13:27otherwise,
13:28kung magsikita yung,
13:28ay,
13:29bugat,
13:29bugat,
13:29we will never build the muscle.
13:32Yes.
13:32Emotionally,
13:33hardships,
13:34in my view,
13:35is also part of developing
13:38emotional resilience.
13:39So,
13:40how can young people,
13:41or even adults like me,
13:43balance that,
13:45I need to go through
13:46this,
13:47I need to carry this weight,
13:50for me to be able
13:51to learn resilience?
13:53That's a very good question,
13:55and a very good analogy,
13:56when it comes to muscle,
13:58and resilience.
13:59So,
13:59yeah,
13:59resilience is like a muscle,
14:01which is why,
14:02advice,
14:03Jude,
14:03sa mga psychologists,
14:04is to like,
14:06not baby your child.
14:08Like,
14:08in a way,
14:09you need to let them learn,
14:10how to stand on their own.
14:14helicopter parenting.
14:17So,
14:17make decisions for them.
14:23the ending,
14:23the young people,
14:26or let's say,
14:27without creativity,
14:28to solve his own problems,
14:30because we're only parents,
14:31to do that.
14:32Or let's say,
14:33the world will revolve around them.
14:38So,
14:39it's very important to go through
14:42certain life challenges,
14:43which are,
14:44normal life challenges,
14:46not traumatic,
14:47but normal,
14:48like,
14:50physically,
14:51or let's say,
14:52heartbroken,
14:53and then,
14:53oh my God.
14:54So,
14:54normal stresses sa life.
14:56So,
14:57those are the things,
14:57in a way,
15:01needed,
15:02sa toang growth.
15:04And,
15:04and,
15:05and the reason why,
15:06I'm relating it to physical strength,
15:08because,
15:09I used to,
15:11go to the gym,
15:12and then,
15:13I also had a physical trainer,
15:15and there's something that,
15:16he said,
15:17na medyo,
15:18murakog,
15:19aha moment ba?
15:20Because,
15:20he actually said,
15:21actually,
15:21sir,
15:22kung,
15:22you're just coming here,
15:23and then,
15:24you're not willing to lift the heavier weights,
15:26which are beyond your capacity,
15:29then,
15:29you are wasting your time.
15:31Diba?
15:31The only way your muscle,
15:34for your muscle to grow,
15:35is,
15:36you need to lift something,
15:38beyond your capacity.
15:39To tear it.
15:40Yes,
15:41correct.
15:42Now,
15:43karun mang god,
15:44which can be good or bad,
15:46because,
15:47we have a younger population,
15:49that's more aware,
15:50about,
15:51mental health condition.
15:53So,
15:54medyo,
15:54careful na,
15:55ang mga tao,
15:56in terms of,
15:57using words like,
15:59you toughen up.
16:00You,
16:01you deal with that.
16:02So,
16:03what are the phrases,
16:04the helpful phrases,
16:06that parents,
16:07or,
16:07guardians,
16:08can use,
16:09to help,
16:10a person,
16:12go through,
16:12a difficult,
16:14emotional,
16:15hurdle,
16:16without,
16:16as you said,
16:17without,
16:17necessarily,
16:19babying them,
16:20and,
16:21without,
16:21also,
16:22pushing them,
16:22namamahagpahay,
16:23na po sila nga,
16:24I shouldn't have said that.
16:26So,
16:26morasyag,
16:27a balance between,
16:29validating,
16:30their,
16:30struggles,
16:31at the same time,
16:32cannot work to,
16:33toughen up.
16:34Yes.
16:35So,
16:35it's more of like,
16:36motivating them,
16:37but at the same time,
16:39siguro,
16:39explaining them,
16:40why they need to go through this,
16:41and,
16:42of course,
16:43you need to,
16:44like,
16:44highlight the fact,
16:45that you're there,
16:46to support them.
16:48So,
16:48anang lang yun siya,
16:48morag,
16:49kanang,
16:50morabitaw,
16:50nag-guide ka,
16:51o,
16:52bata nga,
16:52mag-bike,
16:53so,
16:53you're there to support them,
16:54pero,
16:54nag-bantay ka nga,
16:55mahulog siya,
16:56na,
16:56ka-der to support them,
16:58and encourage you.
16:59So,
17:00yasakto na morag,
17:01I like also,
17:02the analogy,
17:02that we use about,
17:03bicycle,
17:04kanang,
17:04you're not holding,
17:06their hand,
17:06because you will never learn,
17:08but you are present.
17:09Yes.
17:11Okay.
17:12Sige.
17:13So,
17:14let's talk about,
17:15kanang,
17:16still,
17:16kanang,
17:17developing,
17:19resilience,
17:19sige hapon.
17:20There's one,
17:22kanang,
17:23video on TikTok,
17:24so,
17:24I would like to,
17:25your,
17:26to solicit your thoughts about it,
17:29in which,
17:29the child was actually,
17:31so,
17:31this is like,
17:32a two-year-old,
17:33toddler pa man,
17:34ano?
17:34Yan,
17:35nag-kick and scream,
17:36gita sa mall.
17:37And then,
17:37the father,
17:38just let the child,
17:41kick and scream,
17:42until,
17:43eventually,
17:44the father,
17:44the child stopped,
17:46the child realized,
17:47it wasn't working.
17:49But,
17:49the father,
17:50was criticized,
17:52because,
17:53why,
17:53was he negligent,
17:55no?
17:56Of his,
17:57duty,
17:58as a parent.
17:59But,
17:59the father actually said,
18:01yang side ad to,
18:02he said,
18:03na,
18:03I am teaching my child,
18:06to deal with no,
18:09as an answer.
18:10So,
18:11what are your thoughts about that?
18:12It's actually,
18:14true,
18:14in a sense,
18:15kay,
18:16mo namang gitawag si,
18:16psychology nga,
18:17conditioning,
18:18kay,
18:18basic na condition,
18:19ah,
18:20usually,
18:20na condition ang child,
18:21if mohilak siya,
18:23nah,
18:23eh,
18:24hatag na yun ang iyang gusto.
18:25So,
18:26it depends,
18:27but like,
18:27if ka na ganing,
18:28ging na nag no,
18:29explain na,
18:29so,
18:30yeah,
18:30probably,
18:30it's a good thing,
18:32ah,
18:32diligi siya,
18:33ah,
18:33i-feed,
18:34okay,
18:35makondisyon man ang bata nga,
18:37if I cry,
18:38you know,
18:38if I cry and cry,
18:39ihatag lagintan akong gusto.
18:40Correct.
18:41And,
18:42life will,
18:43not always give us,
18:45yes,
18:47and an answer,
18:48as an answer.
18:49mutoyok,
18:50gapon sa fact,
18:51na ma-entitled niya ang bata.
18:53The world will revolt around them,
18:55kay,
18:55if ihatag tanan,
18:56so,
18:57dilina makatun nga,
18:58ah,
18:58dilina,
18:58day nade,
18:59uban butanga,
18:59dilina makuah.
19:00Correct.
19:01And it's okay.
19:02And,
19:03what about ka ng mga phrases like,
19:05don't worry,
19:07everything will be okay.
19:09Or,
19:10what are your thoughts about those?
19:13Or,
19:14or,
19:14sorry,
19:15I'm going to put you on the spot,
19:16or tunulan,
19:17or Bible passage.
19:18Oh,
19:19I don't know.
19:20I mean,
19:22yeah,
19:23I do,
19:24ano,
19:25see it as a coping mechanism.
19:27So,
19:27if it's helpful for a person,
19:29then it's okay.
19:30But,
19:30I have a lot of clients as well nga,
19:33kanang,
19:35very religious and spiritual.
19:37So,
19:38come to me,
19:39mag-guilty sila.
19:40Kaya,
19:41mawag laging phrases ang iingon.
19:42So,
19:43kanang i-pray lang,
19:44lack of faith.
19:45Mm.
19:45Yeah,
19:46mag-guilty sila kay nag-pray man ko ni Lord,
19:48nga nung wala pa man gihapon.
19:50Correct.
19:50So,
19:51mag-guilty sila maayaw.
19:52So,
19:53mental health disorders
19:53are illnesses.
19:55So,
19:55just like cancer,
19:56good nga,
19:57if,
19:57or,
19:58let's say,
19:58unsa pa pa,
19:59sige,
19:59cancer na lang.
20:00So,
20:01if na yung makancer,
20:02muwag tug treatment,
20:03and mag-pray,
20:03so,
20:03pwede raman po na.
20:05Diba?
20:05So,
20:06yeah,
20:06it's just like that,
20:07if na kay,
20:08let's say,
20:09yeah,
20:09depression,
20:10or unsa pa pa ba na
20:11nga mental health disorder,
20:12pwede ka muwag tug professional,
20:14at the same time,
20:15do your coping mechanisms,
20:17or as well as,
20:18to pray,
20:18or,
20:19whatever religion,
20:20are you affiliated with?
20:21That's a good point.
20:22Okay,
20:23yeah,
20:24sakto,
20:24if they go through,
20:25a physical condition,
20:27or illness,
20:28they still go to the doctor,
20:29but they pray.
20:30Yes.
20:31That's a good point.
20:32And the reason why,
20:33I appreciate that,
20:34a lot,
20:35because when I was also going through,
20:36my own challenges,
20:38for some reason,
20:39murag pet peeve gin ako.
20:41It happens,
20:42I'm a spiritual person,
20:44nga lainlain taog ka nang managing,
20:47the experience,
20:48but sa ako,
20:48pet peeve gin ako ang tunulan,
20:50kong Bible passage,
20:51because what,
20:53ang thought balloon ako,
20:54ana ba is,
20:56I'm sorry ha,
20:57basing I will offend some people,
20:58but,
20:59ang akong thought balloon lang is,
21:00if it's just as easy,
21:03as that ba,
21:04I could have just read it myself.
21:07Or wala namin ang graduate.
21:08And some well-meaning friends,
21:13mura sila ma-hurt,
21:15because moha naman ko nga,
21:16well,
21:17if it's as simple as this,
21:18then I could have just read this myself.
21:20So,
21:20lainlain,
21:21and I like when you said,
21:23na parallel.
21:24And,
21:25it depends on how the person,
21:27also,
21:27is managing,
21:28whether it's physical illness,
21:30or,
21:31mental health challenges.
21:33So,
21:34Karun said,
21:35some people would say,
21:36na because the younger generation,
21:38are going through,
21:41different,
21:43environment,
21:44compared to people,
21:45my generation.
21:46So,
21:46they already have,
21:47social media,
21:49they are more prone,
21:51to,
21:51cyber bullying.
21:53And then,
21:54I think,
21:55maluoy ko sa mga bata,
21:56because,
21:57at least in my view,
21:58it's too early for them,
21:59to deal with,
22:00social comparison.
22:02Kay Murag,
22:03mas pronounced naman,
22:04nakaroon with social media.
22:06So,
22:06how does this,
22:08also,
22:08influence,
22:09the well-being,
22:10of the younger generation?
22:12It actually,
22:14a huge,
22:15kuan yun,
22:15problem.
22:16Kay,
22:18sa social media,
22:19naatanan.
22:20So,
22:20aside from the,
22:21kanang triggers,
22:22no,
22:23na ay,
22:23kanang,
22:24social comparison,
22:25or like,
22:27na ay makita nga,
22:29or distressing for them.
22:30And,
22:31at the same time,
22:32if na ay something,
22:33let's say,
22:34katong,
22:35ang trigger na sa social media niya,
22:37everywhere,
22:37binang makita.
22:38So,
22:38we're,
22:39always,
22:40ang reminder.
22:41And,
22:42naasay mga certain standards,
22:43nga ilang i-apply silang self,
22:45nga,
22:46let's say,
22:46for example,
22:46kanang self-care maxing,
22:48if you're familiar with it,
22:50like,
22:50kanang na ay,
22:51butang ideal,
22:53self-care routine,
22:54nga,
22:54in real life,
22:55dilik ko siya attainable.
22:56So,
22:56na,
22:56ma-stress hin noon,
22:57kadilik niya ma-attain.
22:58Or,
22:59certain goals,
23:00nga,
23:00I did this in 20,
23:02or 25.
23:03So,
23:04ma-stress,
23:04ma-pressure,
23:05kailan na,
23:05na siya sa 25 niya,
23:06wala nakita ang,
23:07behind the camera,
23:09kaya,
23:09ang nindotrabe ipakita.
23:10That's correct.
23:11So,
23:11ma-ya,
23:11na,
23:11different,
23:12different pressures.
23:13The other thing also that I read recently,
23:16no,
23:16that's helpful,
23:17kaya,
23:17during my generation,
23:18we also had to deal with bullies.
23:21Mm-hmm.
23:21But,
23:22the bullying stopped after you leave school.
23:25But now,
23:26with,
23:26uh,
23:27social media,
23:28and being exposed online,
23:30it follows the child everywhere.
23:32As long as they have their gadgets with them.
23:34Mm-hmm.
23:35Permanent,
23:35you shine away.
23:37Mm-hmm.
23:37So,
23:38the more,
23:39in my view,
23:39as an untrained person,
23:41the more,
23:41in my view,
23:42mas dako sila ang kinahanglan
23:44to manage the stress.
23:46Kaya,
23:46I think,
23:47this is a way more stressful generation.
23:50Kaya,
23:51nakay issue sa classroom,
23:52gud,
23:52wala naman,
23:53limanta naman.
23:54Yeah,
23:55iku sa,
23:55matrawback pa,
23:57napagpicture,
23:58or video.
23:58Balik-balik.
23:59Oh.
24:00Balik-balik.
24:01The things that you thought
24:02people could have forgotten
24:04mo resurface
24:0610 years later,
24:08you know?
24:09What about
24:09kanikaron kaning mga
24:10online games,
24:12manset,
24:13no?
24:13Because these are
24:14kanang,
24:15part of some people
24:16or some kids,
24:17they use this also
24:19to manage
24:20their
24:22stress.
24:23Mm-hmm.
24:23So,
24:24specific to
24:24online games,
24:25especially those who are
24:27a little bit
24:27violent.
24:29Mm-hmm.
24:29Pusil-pusil,
24:30no?
24:30Pusil-pusil.
24:31Kinang,
24:33when can parents
24:34also say,
24:34ah, this is still
24:35a healthy
24:38recreation,
24:39or
24:41medyo
24:41delikado na ni?
24:43How can parents
24:43also tell?
24:45Mm-hmm.
24:46Actually,
24:47di lima dyan kayo,
24:48siguro,
24:48ingang,
24:49nga dakko dyan siya,
24:50kay,
24:51let's say,
24:52kung ingang nga
24:52itag violent
24:53sa person,
24:54like,
24:55a violent behavior,
24:57complex magod siya,
24:58kay,
24:58it could also be
24:59environmental,
25:01so,
25:01iyahang family,
25:02kay,
25:02kasi makakita siya nga,
25:04bugnoon niya,
25:05iyahang,
25:05iyahang mother,
25:06iyahang papa,
25:07guno na mother,
25:09or nagdakupod nga,
25:10ka nang,
25:10violent ang palibot nga,
25:12dungagan,
25:13ilig siya,
25:14violent video games,
25:15diligid yun nga,
25:16tungod sa video games,
25:17like,
25:18there are a lot of people
25:19who are into,
25:20also,
25:20nasa una ka,
25:21na mga,
25:22as a,
25:22first person shooter games,
25:24mayana,
25:25so,
25:25wala mang ginaing yun nga,
25:26violent sila pagkadako,
25:28so,
25:28it's still,
25:29um,
25:30complex,
25:31matter,
25:32but,
25:33yeah,
25:33when it comes to,
25:34parenting a child,
25:35who's,
25:36um,
25:37who loves,
25:38uh,
25:38video games,
25:40aside from the time,
25:41okay,
25:41namin sa tawag nga,
25:43behavioral addiction,
25:44so,
25:46atong,
25:46ang dandrak ay substance,
25:48so,
25:48nasa tawag nga,
25:49behavioral,
25:50aw,
25:50kore,
25:51that's another way of looking at it,
25:52continue,
25:53so,
25:53behavioral,
25:54like,
25:54shopping,
25:56gaming,
25:57or watching,
25:58um,
25:59or,
25:59x-rated movies,
26:01and so on,
26:02so,
26:02when it comes to gaming,
26:03kan,
26:03bantay lang sa,
26:04sa addiction,
26:05and,
26:05at the same time,
26:06pinaka importante po,
26:07kanang sa chat forum,
26:10oh,
26:10so,
26:11namang goy,
26:11mga certain,
26:12or,
26:13sensitive topics,
26:16kanabitang mga brainwash,
26:18sa vulnerable children,
26:20that's what they call grooming,
26:21no?
26:21yeah,
26:22kanang incels,
26:24yun,
26:24yun,
26:25yun,
26:25yun,
26:25yun,
26:25yun,
26:25yun,
26:25yun,
26:26be careful lang,
26:27who they talk to,
26:28yun,
26:29yun,
26:29yun,
26:30yun,
26:30yun,
26:30yun,
26:30yun,
26:31yun,
26:31yun,
26:31yun,
26:32yun,
26:32yun,
26:32pretending to be children,
26:34correct,
26:35so,
26:35parents should be more mindful,
26:36now,
26:37in one of the interviews,
26:39because you're a very famous celebrity,
26:41in one of the interviews,
26:43that featured you,
26:44in the past,
26:45you mentioned certain statistics,
26:48no?
26:48and one of the most striking to me,
26:51is,
26:51when it comes to,
26:53ending somebody's life,
26:55kanang men,
26:56has an overwhelming number,
27:00compared to women,
27:01what's driving this?
27:03actually,
27:04until now,
27:07like 90,
27:0880%,
27:09yeah,
27:09grabby kayo on disparity,
27:11a couple of reasons,
27:13but,
27:14siguro,
27:15akong ikuan lang,
27:15is culturally,
27:17a cultural lens,
27:18kay,
27:19kanang,
27:20atong culture,
27:21dapat ba ya nga,
27:22isog ang lalaki,
27:24or,
27:24i-discourage nga,
27:26sorry,
27:26kanap ito,
27:27ingon nga,
27:27bayot,
27:28kung hilak,
27:28I hate that,
27:30kay,
27:30nga no,
27:31bayot,
27:31or,
27:32it's,
27:32nga no,
27:32kuansad nga bayot,
27:33like,
27:34why is it degrading sa,
27:35lalaki,
27:36but,
27:36ang point is like,
27:38i-discourage sila,
27:38muhilak,
27:39which is a very human response,
27:41so,
27:42connecting sa,
27:43kung gingon ganina,
27:45di li siya pwede muhilak,
27:46di li pwede masad,
27:47they go to,
27:49substance use,
27:50one,
27:51more siya,
27:51related,
27:52yaponya,
27:53kanang,
27:53i-cope nila through,
27:55drinking alcohol,
27:57tanang substance,
27:58so,
27:59mas,
28:00kuha na nun siya,
28:01more risky,
28:02niya,
28:03kanang,
28:04kung dili sila,
28:05pwede masad,
28:05angry,
28:07so,
28:07bire may maglagot,
28:08di ba?
28:08Instead,
28:09that's their manifestation of sadness,
28:11o,
28:12kanang,
28:13culturally acceptable,
28:14o,
28:15mas macho nga,
28:16kanang,
28:16kuha,
28:16suko ko,
28:18o,
28:19nga,
28:19nag-uolra dito,
28:20o,
28:21niya,
28:21ang,
28:21ang friendship said sa males,
28:23kay,
28:23kanang,
28:24kanang,
28:25murag binuangan,
28:26gihapon,
28:27murag,
28:27na-giapoy,
28:29more toxic masculinity,
28:31nga,
28:32kanang,
28:32mag-uol ka,
28:33murag binuangan ka,
28:35so,
28:35wala sila yung makita niya support,
28:37di ba?
28:38Compared sa women,
28:39nga,
28:40kung masad,
28:40ganian yung women,
28:41kaya,
28:42pwede pang mo bent out,
28:43or mas,
28:43in a way,
28:44normal sila nga,
28:45munghilak,
28:45so,
28:46kanan,
28:46mas,
28:47mas mag-go-to sila sa,
28:48mga professional,
28:49or sa friends,
28:50and so on,
28:52yeah,
28:52ang males,
28:53kaya,
28:53kanan,
28:54aside sa,
28:55ma-uwa-walagi,
28:57mas,
28:58abay-ubay sila,
28:59o,
28:59pressure nga,
29:00gi-handle,
29:00especially if,
29:01kanang,
29:02father,
29:03kanang,
29:04murag mo,
29:05kanang,
29:06sana,
29:06kanang,
29:07kung ilaw ng tahanan,
29:09ang mother,
29:10sila ang wall,
29:11di ba?
29:12morag sana.
29:14abinawag switch,
29:15just kidding.
29:16sila ang switch,
29:17maitig baw sa inyo.
29:19Sige,
29:20rin.
29:22Ilaw ng tahanan,
29:23dadadis,
29:23the switch,
29:24just kidding.
29:24Okay,
29:24continue,
29:25and then.
29:26sila ang gorg,
29:27dapat ma-strong,
29:28so,
29:28ang ay ma-weak.
29:31So,
29:32what are your suggestions,
29:33mampun,
29:34for us,
29:35to normalize,
29:37no,
29:37for us men,
29:39to actually,
29:40ask for help?
29:43So,
29:44support is really important,
29:46so,
29:46it's very important,
29:47kamakita taong,
29:48mga taong,
29:49nga,
29:49kanabitaong,
29:50mo-validate sa itong emotions,
29:52say,
29:53hopefully,
29:53ang family,
29:54or if,
29:54mati makitaan nga,
29:55quality friends nga,
29:57nga,
29:57maminaw giyod nga,
29:58dilita i-judge,
29:59and at the same time,
30:00of course,

30:15Now,
30:16the next question,
30:17although we talk about,
30:18a little bit of this earlier,
30:20is,
30:22I will not put you on the spot,
30:23but,
30:24di ba ka nang,
30:25if there are,
30:26people we care for,
30:28and then,
30:29medyo na sila,
30:29sabi na,
30:30body order,
30:31maglisod bantag approach,
30:33itunol na itong deodorant,
30:35or et cetera,
30:35but I will not ask you,
30:36specifically about that,
30:37but maybe you can comment on that,
30:38but anyway,
30:39I'm referring to,
30:41kay,
30:41we have an office mate,
30:42for example,
30:43or,
30:44we have a friend,
30:44for example,
30:45and then we notice na,
30:46mulag,
30:47nani siya ay signs,
30:48of mental health,
30:50challenges,
30:51so,
30:52how,
30:52what's the,
30:53what's the right way to,
30:55approach,
30:56the person,
30:56by,
31:00what will you say,
31:02no,
31:02if,
31:03kay,
31:03mulag,
31:03the person,
31:04you,
31:04you may have seen,
31:06that the person needs help,
31:07but,
31:08not asking for help,
31:10so,
31:10how would you,
31:13sound,
31:13maninato,
31:15so,
31:16what's the right way,
31:17to approach them,

31:37diba,
31:38so,
31:38kanang,
31:39I think,
31:40the,
31:40the main point is,
31:42be curious,
31:43o,
31:44kaya,
31:44that's the,
31:45ano,
31:45one of the most,

31:50is to be curious,
31:51so,
31:51unse na itabo,
31:52unse mag ipati,
31:53ana,
31:54so,
31:54without judgment,

32:05tatong,
32:05mo hatag tag support,
32:06and at the same time,
32:07link them,
32:08to professionals,
32:11now,
32:11you've said,
32:12a bit of this,
32:13also earlier,
32:14but maybe we can,
32:15talk more about this,
32:16is,
32:16what should also,
32:17okay,
32:18well meaning,
32:18as we are,
32:20but,
32:21sadly,
32:22we,
32:22sometimes,
32:23make mistakes,
32:24ba,
32:24and we end up,
32:25saying things,
32:26that,
32:27to a person,
32:28struggling,
32:29that,
32:30we should not,
32:31so,
32:31what are the phrases,
32:32man,
32:32that we should,
32:34avoid,
32:35kind of shock,
32:36very,

32:43invalidating na siya,
32:44correct,
32:44oh,
32:45kanang,
32:45yung tanga,
32:46oh,
32:46everything's gonna be okay,
32:47or smile lang,
32:48or be positive,
32:49I mean,
32:49yeah,
32:50they're good statements,
32:51but,
32:52from a person,
32:53dealing with,
32:53a mental health issue,
32:55kay,
32:56marciag ka na,
32:57marciag,

34:44and,
34:44at the same time,
34:45be curious,
34:46morag yun na,
34:47no,
34:48I remember one time,
34:49sorry,
34:50nakarelate,
34:51nakong kanina,
34:51because,
34:52when we were in college,
34:54we were,

34:56mga seven,
34:57mika guys,
34:58and,

35:02but,
35:02they happen to be,
35:03girlfriends,

35:07na isa,
35:08na mo ka amigo,
35:10and,
35:10maybe he's watching,

35:51that's an example,
35:51of kanang,

35:53but,
35:54because we were laughing,
35:55we were invalidating the feeling,
36:00so,
36:01that's it,
36:02un saman siya,
36:03balanse sa kanang,
36:04when a person would say,
36:06I'm fine,

36:09kanang friends,
36:10no,
36:11trying to help,
36:12so,
36:12I'm fine,

36:50share na ko,
36:51na,
36:51but I think,
36:53itong imong gisuti about presence,
36:55is,
36:55is a good one,
36:56very,
36:57vital,
36:58maybe,
36:58walay words,
36:59but,
37:00you are around,
37:01could be,
37:02now,

37:12even to friends,
37:13how can we also,
37:14support,
37:15a person,
37:16going through,
37:17what we think,
37:18is a mental health,
37:19challenge,
37:20without,
37:21graduating,
37:22eventually,
37:23to become,
37:24therapist,
37:25ourselves,
37:27trauma dump,
37:30siguro,
37:32ato lang siya,
37:33moro siya,
37:34gitawag na mo,
37:35as compartmentalization,
37:37so,
37:37you're there,
37:38but,
37:38at the same time,
37:39after the conversation,
37:41ato lang to siya,
37:42di lang mo siya da doon,
37:44so,
37:44like,
37:45just be present,
37:46ato,
37:46presence,
37:47so,
37:47presence means,

37:51sa future,
37:52di siya din mo da doon,

37:54so,
37:55katong conversation,
37:56ad to lang siya,
37:57ato siya nga box,
37:59now,
38:00the other one,
38:00is,
38:00karo morag,
38:01we move into,
38:02something more serious,
38:03especially,
38:04if we are spotting signs,
38:06not just of,
38:07kanang,
38:08mental health challenge,
38:09but,
38:10morag,
38:10nag-exhibit siya,
38:11o kanang manifestation,
38:12of self-harm,
38:15but still,
38:16not asking,
38:17help,
38:18no,
38:19how would we,
38:20approach that,
38:21person,

38:31how can we also,
38:33best approach the person,
38:34about helping,
38:37them,
38:38okay,
38:38so,
38:39well,
38:40presence is actually,
38:41still,
38:42okay,
38:43presence,
38:44and then,
38:44kato curiosity,
38:46nag-apunto siya,
38:47but at the same time,

41:06Center for Behavioral Sciences,
41:07unahan na siya,
41:07gamay sa,
41:08itong main,
41:09hospital,
41:10so,
41:11at least,
41:11dua ang options,
41:12either they go to,
41:13City Health,
41:14kung sa,
41:15kanang,
41:15kanang itong,
41:16gipit,
41:17pero,
41:18walay,
41:18ah,
41:19kung magpa,
41:21psychiatrist,
41:22sa,
41:22Vicente Soto,
41:24kung meds,
41:25kanina po,
41:25ang mental health program,
41:26or,
41:26let's say,
41:27mga,
41:27um,
41:28coach,
41:29ah,
41:29counseling,
41:30mga inyan na,
41:31narapot sa City.
41:32For private institutions,
41:33masari,
41:34though,
41:34you mentioned it already,
41:35but,
41:36unsan man sa'yo,
41:36mga options for,
41:38private institutions?
41:39hospital,
41:40sa,
41:40sa Tsongwa.
41:43Okay,
41:44during my time,
41:45what was,
41:45I thought,
41:46was only available,
41:48was in,
41:48Cebu Community Hospital.
41:50Oh,
41:52but,
41:52at that time,
41:54I did not know,
41:55that it's also available,
41:56in other hospitals.
41:58Murag,
41:58nahimu siyang referral.
42:00Oh,
42:00nahimu siya nga,
42:01ano po,
42:01kay,
42:02as you've mentioned,
42:03wala ka kay Baba,
42:04so,
42:04Murag,
42:05nindot maghimu,
42:06kanami itong,
42:07directory,
42:08Yes,
42:09kay kung nahi-hotline,
42:11ang physical challenge,
42:12napuntay hotline,
42:14kwan,
42:15wala yung hotline,
42:16sorry,
42:16now I remember,
42:17mental health?
42:17Oh,
42:18actually,
42:18tawag pagla,
42:19home,
42:20no hopline,
42:21nag-handman pa do'y bay.
42:23Okay,
42:23at least,
42:24kanang for emergency,
42:26kanang at the last minute,
42:28they decide to seek for help,
42:30at least,
42:30do you have the,
42:31can you still remember the number?
42:33Sige,
42:34we'll post it na lang,
42:35para at least they know,
42:37whether,
42:38whether,
42:40ang person nakaspot,
42:41or ang person mismo,
42:43could,
42:44ask help,
42:45at the last minute.
42:46Or,
42:46diliganahan mo ito.
42:48Kaya usually,
42:48aside sa kanang,
42:50kanang face-to-face,
42:51kanang masad sa online,
42:53kaya dilis na ganahan,
42:54mo agtog yod,
42:56so kanang sanaw serving,
42:57daghan man punog,
42:58psychologist and psychiatrist,
42:59di ha.
43:00And by the way,
43:01in terms of rights ba,
43:03and I'm referring more of,
43:06kanang rights to privacy.
43:08Maybe that's something also,
43:09that you can assure,
43:10those who are watching.
43:12During my time,
43:13this is still a long time ago,
43:16ang g-approach,
43:17manggot na ko first,
43:18was our physician,
43:20sa office.
43:23And sad to say,
43:24the physician,
43:25eventually,
43:26after the third visit,
43:27told me,
43:28nga,
43:29at large pa siya.
43:31But,
43:31she didn't probably,
43:33know how to manage it.
43:34Intubag siya sa kuha nga,
43:36if you would come to me,
43:37the fourth time,
43:38I will tell your boss.
43:40And,
43:41at that moment,
43:42mo rin yung nisiratan na,
43:43ng options na ko.
43:45Oh, bad.
43:45So,
43:46in terms of right to privacy,
43:48man sad ba?
43:49Kanang,
43:49how can you assure also viewers,
43:51na if they seek for help,
43:53it will not impact.
43:54Kaya katumagol na ko,
43:55mo rin yung nai,
43:56career implication.
43:57Hmm.
43:57Oh,
43:58what are the assurances,
43:59man sad,
43:59that you can give,
44:00na if they seek for help,
44:02it will be kept confidential.
44:04Di sila isumbong.
44:05Kaya mumantong sa kuha,
44:06mo rin yung isumbong.
44:07Actually,
44:08very,
44:08huge deal sa mo,
44:10ang confidentiality.
44:11Kaya,
44:13we're dealing with
44:14sensitive information.
44:15Grabe ka vulnerable.
44:18kaya mo dyan na siyang
44:18keep,
44:19good,
44:20at the utmost,
44:21respect,
44:22ang confidentiality sa client.
44:24So,
44:25very,
44:25excuse me,
44:27very confidential na siya
44:29ang sessions.
44:30Wala dyan yung makaibalo.
44:31Kaya naman siya
44:32ang sometimes deterrent.
44:34Kaya katumasako.
44:36I've felt like,
44:38it will impact
44:39my career.
44:40Sumutumurag na siya
44:42ang door.
44:43Kaya wasn't aware
44:44of my rights
44:45at that time.
44:47Sige,
44:47so,
44:49in the corner,
44:50we're about towards
44:50the end na
44:51of the conversation.
44:53The way
44:53things are going
44:55ba,
44:55in terms of
44:56keeping people
44:57mentally healthy,
44:58or if they're
44:59going through
45:00challenges,
45:02they would
45:02ask for help.
45:04what are the areas
45:06man which
45:07you think
45:08as Cebu,
45:09as a community,
45:10can do
45:11better?
45:14Probably
45:15access.
45:18As you've
45:19mentioned,
45:19maglibog
45:21pa kaasa
45:21mo,
45:21Dagan.
45:22Kula.
45:23When it comes
45:24to,
45:24let's say,
45:24physical health,
45:25my doctor.
45:27So,
45:29access and
45:29affordability
45:30kay
45:31ma.
45:32Actually,
45:32mo to na
45:33kutana ko sa
45:33free,
45:34kay,
45:36ko lang ha,
45:36personal story.
45:38I spent
45:39with the
45:39doctor man
45:40mga three
45:41hours when
45:42I saw,
45:42in base,
45:43I felt
45:43better when
45:43I saw
45:44the bill.
45:46back to
45:47zero.
45:51It's quite
45:53expensive,
45:54actually.
45:56kaya,
45:57mga na
45:57sa hinderpud
45:58when it comes
45:59to mental
46:00health
46:00services.
46:02Mga to ba
46:02sa mental
46:03health services
46:03kay,
46:04mahal lagi
46:04siya niya.
46:05Ang insurance,
46:06I feel like
46:07wala.
46:08At that time,
46:09wala.
46:10So,
46:10nag-easy
46:11akong
46:19access and
46:20affordability
46:20is a
46:21huge deal.
46:23Let's say,
46:24physical pa,
46:24maglisod,
46:25mamagig.
46:25Correct.
46:26Di ba,
46:27morag,
46:28siguro,
46:28ka na nang
46:29kakuya po
46:29nagig na
46:30mo ato
46:30pag-ospital.
46:32So,
46:32samota na
46:33ang mental
46:33health.
46:34And that's
46:35actually a
46:35very good
46:36point.
46:37Di na ba
46:38kayo visible
46:38ang mental
46:39health challenge?
46:40So,
46:41kung agwantahon
46:41nila ang
46:42nagdugo
46:42ng samad,
46:44some people
46:44will just
46:45carry it
46:45na lang
46:46kayo basin
46:47magdugang
46:47sa gasto.
46:49Exactly.
46:50So,
46:51affordability
46:51and
46:53access.
46:54Sige.
46:54So,
46:55now,
46:55we covered
46:56this in the
46:56beginning,
46:57but at least
46:57we will end
46:58on a lighter
46:58note ba.
46:59What are
47:00the
47:00everyday
47:02things,
47:03although you
47:03mentioned it
47:04earlier na lang,
47:05but that we
47:06can do
47:06for us to
47:07remain
47:08mentally
47:09healthy,
47:09especially
47:10with
47:10social
47:10media
47:11around?
47:14Siguro,
47:15dili na lang
47:15ako i-
47:18highlight nga
47:19dapat okay
47:19to always.
47:20Kay,
47:21let's say,
47:21be happy.
47:22Morg,
47:22mo yungan nga,
47:23morg,
47:23go be happy,
47:25but happiness
47:25is an emotion.
47:27No,
47:27mo hawa,
47:28mo balik.
47:29So,
47:30ka na lang,
47:30morg,
47:31acceptance nga na,
47:32ay times nga dili,
47:33okay,
47:33and it will be
47:34okay in,
47:36like,
47:37soon,
47:37or anna.
47:39morg,
47:40naalanggiha po
47:40ng hope ba?
47:41There are
47:42things nga,
47:43like,
47:43nargi sulban
47:44ang mga butang,
47:45morg,
47:46um,
47:47let's say,
47:48let's also
47:49not focus on,
47:51kanabitong,
47:53morg,
47:53sa work,
47:54no,
47:54mangita sa tag,
47:55other ways to
47:56make us happy,
47:58kanabangan nga nang,
47:59morg,
47:59live our life,
48:01okay,
48:01basing,
48:02kanang stress na kita
48:03sa work,
48:04sa,
48:04school niya,
48:05makalimot na ta nga,
48:06to,
48:07to enjoy other things
48:08in life,
48:09kanabitong ginatuin nun niya,
48:11okay,
48:11always,
48:12there's always,
48:13kanang,
48:14um,
48:15there's always help,
48:16there's always support,
48:17there's always,
48:18kanang,
48:19people we can go to,
48:21no,
48:22or,
48:22kanang,
48:22mamuna usually,
48:23ang ingon sa mga,
48:25uh,
48:25clients niya,
48:26feeling na hopeless na tanan,
48:28or,
48:28wala nagiging ka ng,
48:30tubag ilahang,
48:31buwan,
48:32or,
48:32dili na siya,
48:33mo,
48:33better,
48:34so,
48:35better na siya,
48:36pero,
48:37kanang,
48:38dili,
48:38makaingon niya,
48:39dayon-dayon,
48:40but yeah,
48:40again,
48:40it's a,
48:40it's a process siya.
48:42And finally,
48:44kanang,
48:44how can we also,
48:46normalize,
48:48kanang,
48:48and,
48:48and this is now your,
48:50message to the audience,
48:52no,
48:52how can we also,
48:53normalize,
48:54asking for help,
48:55especially for men,
48:57no,
48:57not as a sign of weakness,
48:59but in fact,
49:01a,
49:01a sign of strength.
49:03So,
49:05mental health,
49:06we all have mental health,
49:07and hopefully,
49:09no,
49:10we go to professionals,
49:13especially if we're not feeling,
49:14let's say,
49:14normalize it as like,
49:16going to a physician,
49:18going to a clinic,
49:19so,
49:20yeah,
49:20mental health is,
49:21just like that.
49:24Sige.
49:25So,
49:25thank you very much,
49:26Sharon,
49:27for your time,
49:28and for sharing also,
49:30your expertise,
49:31and your insights,
49:32so that we would be able to keep our minds healthy,
49:36and if we are challenged,
49:39for us to normalize asking for help.
49:42So,
49:43our mental health deserves the same attention we give our physical health.
49:49Resilience means learning how to face difficulties,
49:53recover from setbacks,
49:54and ask help when we need it.
