The screenplay was written by William Raynor and Myles Wilder. 00:03:34By 8.25 at the Los Angeles branch of the Communications Commission,
00:03:39reports of strong interference with radio and television reception
00:03:43began to pour in from the beach area.
00:03:47The monitors went to work immediately.
00:03:49Mobile units were ordered to converge on the vicinity of the disturbance.
00:03:54Pinpoint direction-finding devices began to trace the trouble to its source.
00:04:06This is Mobile 1, Hazen speaking.
00:04:09We're at Ocean and Beacon Way, interference strength 2, bearing 27 degrees.
00:04:16Over.
00:04:17Mobile 1 from center, roger.
00:04:19Over.
00:04:20Mobile center from Mobile 7, over.
00:04:22Go ahead, Mobile 7.
00:04:24This is Mobile 7, from the Pacific Center and Beach 4.
00:04:27Interference strength 3, bearing 39 degrees, over.
00:04:31This is Mobile Center, roger.
00:04:33Stand by.
00:04:35Mobile 1 and Mobile 7.
00:04:37Mobile 1, from Mobile Center, point of interception estimated 3 miles north of surf.
00:04:43Repeat, 3 miles north of surf.
00:04:46Acknowledge.
00:04:47This is Mobile 7, roger.
00:04:49Mobile 1, roger.
00:04:50Mobile 7, roger.
00:04:51We'll go now.
00:04:56Okay, Charlie, let's get moved.
00:05:09Yes, what is it?
00:05:10Take me to a phone, quick.
00:05:11I need an ambulance.
00:05:12What's the matter?
00:05:13My husband and Pete out there in the picnic grounds just above the beach.
00:05:16They've been hurt.
00:05:17Well, this is a communications car.
00:05:19I'll phone it in from here.
00:05:21A Mobile 1 to Central, over.
00:05:26Did you make that out, Charlie?
00:05:28Not a word.
00:05:29A Mobile 1 to Central, I can't reach you.
00:05:31Repeat.
00:05:35They must be getting us all, right?
00:05:37A Mobile 1 to Central, have an ambulance set to beach at surf.
00:05:41Emergency, two men hurt.
00:05:42Acknowledge.
00:05:45Roger now.
00:05:48I'm sure they'll be here soon now.
00:05:50Tell us what happened.
00:05:51This man, he just kept coming at us.
00:05:53It was awful.
00:05:54Who?
00:05:55I don't know.
00:05:56He was wearing a suit like a diver.
00:05:57Hurry, please.
00:05:58They're hurt.
00:06:00Charlie, you better wait here.
00:06:01I'll go down and take a look.
00:06:07The young woman's hysteria became obvious as they reached the picnic grounds at the beach.
00:06:12There was no sign of the mysterious intruder, and little could be done for her husband and their friend, until
00:06:19the ambulance arrived.
00:06:35Well, so you beat us to it.
00:06:36Not exactly a dame waved us down there's been some trouble in the picnic grounds
00:06:40I thought I saw an ambulance down there when I came around the bend
00:06:43Yeah, we had a job calling for it couldn't read central that figures reception's dead in the whole area
00:06:48I haven't been able to read them for the last 10 minutes
00:06:50We must be pretty close to the center of the interference right now. How do you figure it? Let me
00:06:55see the chart
00:06:59There it is at Pacific Palisade she read 123.5
00:07:04Then she went down to 88.2 at the junction
00:07:07Should make it 45 even here. Well, not quite. I've got 44.7. I'll check it again
00:07:14All right, fellas. How are you doing?
00:07:16Oh, we're just taking another reading now. What happened down there?
00:07:19The police took the girl and one of the guys to the station. What about the other one?
00:07:23Well, he's on the way to the morgue. That was her husband
00:07:25You're right on the button, Charlie. 44.7. Report back to central if you find anything else
00:07:33Charlie, grab that portable to check the beach, will you?
00:07:35Got it right here
00:07:37I'll pick you up right here in about an hour
00:07:39Where are you going?
00:07:40Police asked me to drive by the station and sign a report
00:07:43I'll see you later
00:07:45If you don't, you know where to look for the body
00:07:56Like I said, we were just starting to eat and we heard something tracking through the sand toward us
00:08:00I looked up and couldn't see anything
00:08:02Then Betty screamed
00:08:04At what?
00:08:05At what you couldn't see anything
00:08:06At first we couldn't
00:08:07Then this guy started toward us
00:08:10What kind of a guy?
00:08:11How should I know? He was wearing some kind of a helmet over his head
00:08:14He could have been a deep sea diver or anything
00:08:16All right
00:08:16After you saw this, this diver, what happened?
00:08:20Well, we jumped up
00:08:22Ed, that was Betty's husband
00:08:23He allowed him to stop
00:08:25But he just kept coming
00:08:27I never saw anything like it
00:08:28He didn't say anything
00:08:30He just kept moving in
00:08:32Then you say he attacked you
00:08:33No, we didn't give him a chance
00:08:35Ed grabbed a piece of wood and took a swing at him
00:08:37That didn't stop him
00:08:38He caught the end
00:08:40That's, that's all I remember
00:08:41Just because a man's taking a walk
00:08:43There's no reason to slug him
00:08:45Besides, you don't look like a guy who frightened so easy
00:08:48How would you feel if somebody with a crazy helmet with pipe sticking out of it came at you in
00:08:52the dark?
00:08:53And look, I know this sounds, sounds crazy
00:08:57But there wasn't any head in that helmet
00:08:58No head
00:09:01No head at all
00:09:03It's the truth
00:09:04I think you need some coffee
00:09:06I don't want anything
00:09:10It's all the same with you, Lieutenant
00:09:11I've got to pick up one of my men at the beach
00:09:13Okay, thanks for coming down, Hazen
00:09:15Hope I didn't put you out
00:09:16No trouble, so long
00:09:18You too
00:09:23All right, let's start at the beginning
00:09:25How well did you know the dead man?
00:09:28And his wife
00:09:29Betty and I went to school together
00:09:31When you had a year
00:09:32How long were they married?
00:09:34About a year
00:09:35Wasn't her husband a little older than she?
00:09:38I don't know
00:09:39But you said you and Mrs. Evans went to school together
00:09:41Then you never discussed anything personal with her?
00:09:44She did mention he was older, yes
00:09:46How much?
00:09:47Fifteen, twenty years
00:09:49What difference does that make?
00:09:50That wasn't too hard now, was it?
00:09:52Where do you live?
00:09:54Six twenty-nine and a half East Palm Court
00:09:57Why?
00:09:59That's where the Evans live, isn't it?
00:10:01Yeah, I board with him
00:10:02You do, huh?
00:10:05Well, that Mrs. Evans is a good-looking woman
00:10:10What are you trying to say?
00:10:18Lieutenant Bowers
00:10:21Where?
00:10:24Yeah, I got it
00:10:26I'll leave right away
00:10:28I'll leave it another murder
00:10:30Another beach
00:10:32Keep an eye on this guy
00:10:33Until I get back
00:10:35What do you mean?
00:10:36You'll stay right where you are
00:10:38At least until Mrs. Evans feels well enough to talk
00:10:41What do you want from her?
00:10:42Oh, I just want to see if your story checks with hers
00:10:45After all, you went to school together, remember?
00:10:59You say there were no witnesses, huh?
00:11:01None yet
00:11:02Anything missing?
00:11:03I don't think so
00:11:04The cash register wasn't touched
00:11:06Get a breakdown of the inventory as soon as you can
00:11:08What about fingerprints?
00:11:10The boys are working on them now
00:11:22Sorry, I'm late
00:11:22What kept you so long?
00:11:24The lieutenant asked me to hang around a while
00:11:27What's the score?
00:11:28Ah, looks like one of those things
00:11:30Pretty girl, older husband, young boarder
00:11:33Kid claims some guy without a head knocked the old man off
00:11:36Yeah, don't say
00:11:37Anything else?
00:11:39Yeah, he had a diver's outfit with horns
00:11:41No, he's going to have to do better than that
00:11:44How are we doing?
00:11:46I took a reading about ten minutes ago
00:11:48The radiation has gone out with the tide
00:11:50What about the radio phone?
00:11:52It's working fired again
00:11:53I just got a call from Central
00:11:55They said Mobile 7 picked up some new trouble northeast of here
00:11:58Here we go again
00:12:00Pop in
00:12:12Who reported this murder?
00:12:14There he is there
00:12:15He lives next door
00:12:16His name's George Nelson
00:12:17Hey, Mr. Nelson
00:12:18Yes, sir
00:12:19Come here, will you?
00:12:22I'm Lieutenant Bowers, homicide
00:12:23You found this, buddy?
00:12:25That's right
00:12:25He must be just locked up for the night when this happened
00:12:27How do you know that?
00:12:28Well, he usually does around this time
00:12:29What were you doing here?
00:12:31I was sitting home watching the fights on TV
00:12:33And all of a sudden the things start acting up
00:12:35What has that got to do with it?
00:12:36Well, you don't know the set
00:12:38You know, it wouldn't work at all when I came home to supper
00:12:40Then all of a sudden it cleared up fine
00:12:42So I thought
00:12:43Well, I'll get set to look at the fights again
00:12:45And all of a sudden outage goes again
00:12:47So I thought maybe the battery station down here
00:12:49Was overcharging the circuit
00:12:50And so I came down to take a look
00:12:51That's all
00:12:53Hey, don't you ever quit work?
00:12:55What's up this time?
00:12:58Another murder?
00:13:00What are you doing here, Hazen?
00:13:01Same as before
00:13:02Still trying to track down that signal
00:13:04Hey, does that stuff work on TV, too?
00:13:07It has been for hours
00:13:08What did I tell you?
00:13:10What's the matter?
00:13:11Seems to sit one on the blank
00:13:12Well, at least we know we're on the right track
00:13:14How'd you make out with that border?
00:13:17You're still sticking to a story
00:13:18The guy had no head
00:13:20Well, I'll be seeing you
00:13:21So long
00:13:21Right
00:13:35And so the communications team resumed its mission
00:13:39To track the mysterious interference to its source
00:13:43Via accurate readings taken at regular intervals
00:13:46By stationary and Mobile units
00:13:49It was determined that the disturbance was moving in a northeasterly direction
00:13:55By 10.34, Mobile Center had pinpointed the disturbance
00:14:00At the edge of the Huntington oil fields
00:14:04Units one and seven were instructed to close in
00:14:15Hey, Charlie, do you see what I see?
00:14:17Yeah, the oil field
00:14:19Let's hope our trouble's burning up
00:14:21Well, there's only one way to find out
00:14:30Look, Sarge
00:14:31Two murders and an explosion in one precinct is big news
00:14:35Now, come on
00:14:36You can't pin it all on the young border
00:14:38Well, can you?
00:14:40Very funny
00:14:45Yeah?
00:14:46I'm Hazen of the communications commission
00:14:48Oh, the lieutenant's waiting for you
00:14:50Thank you
00:14:52There's a wheel
00:14:54You've heard the man
00:14:55Communications commission
00:14:57Oh, hello, Hazen
00:14:59Hope you didn't mind leaving your job long enough to continue
00:15:01Down here
00:15:02As a matter of fact, I needed a break
00:15:04We've been on the go since sundown
00:15:05I'll bet you'd like a cup of coffee
00:15:07You got a deal
00:15:07Here
00:15:10Thanks
00:15:10Right
00:15:11What's on your mind?
00:15:13Well, it's just a hunch, but let me show you something
00:15:18First, right here tonight
00:15:19A murder was committed at the beach
00:15:21You were on the scene before I even knew about it
00:15:23For what?
00:15:25Right after that, there was another murder
00:15:26Right here
00:15:28And we bumped into each other again, right?
00:15:30Yeah
00:15:30Now, I just got back from the oil field
00:15:32Here
00:15:33There was a big explosion
00:15:35And I saw one of your units cruising around
00:15:37That was number seven
00:15:39I got there a little later
00:15:41What are you driving at?
00:15:42I don't know yet
00:15:46Tazen, is it possible that our work and your work might be related in some way?
00:15:51Maybe
00:15:53Let me follow you down the line, we'll add it up together
00:15:55Good idea
00:15:58You know, my job is primarily concerned with the detection of any kind of interference where communications are concerned
00:16:04Yeah
00:16:06Might have something there
00:16:08We've been tracking some kind of disturbance right down the line from the beach to the oil field
00:16:12Just like you've got it marked off here
00:16:14Well, then I'm right
00:16:16Only we haven't found our trouble yet
00:16:19Oh
00:16:20Tommy, it's just kind of interference happens very often
00:16:24Never anything like this
00:16:25It's on the move all the time
00:16:26We need some harm with a transmitter in the car
00:16:29It's not a transmitter
00:16:30We don't get a definite disturbance, it's just a sense of appearance
00:16:34Hmm
00:16:36Then you have no idea of what it is, huh?
00:16:39Not yet
00:16:39How are you making up?
00:16:41Not so good
00:16:42You were here when I questioned that boy about the murder at the beach
00:16:45You got anything more out of it?
00:16:48Yeah
00:16:48Come on with me, you might want to see this
00:16:57Ah, I see you're just about done
00:16:59Thanks, you can go now
00:17:04Are you sure this is what the man looks like?
00:17:08What do you say, Betty?
00:17:10Well, just about
00:17:11I mean, I think the tubes were a little lower down
00:17:13And you still insist there was no head inside the helmet
00:17:16I'm positive there wasn't
00:17:17What about you?
00:17:19Well, it was dark
00:17:20I couldn't swear to it
00:17:22Thanks, that'll be all
00:17:23You mean we can go now?
00:17:25Yeah, for the time being
00:17:27Just stick close to home
00:17:28Maybe we want to see you again tomorrow
00:17:30We'll be there
00:17:31Come on, Betty
00:17:32You kind of changed your mind about those two, haven't you?
00:17:34Yeah, I guess I have
00:17:35Hey, bring in the old man, will you?
00:17:40Don't tell me you believe this story about this whatever it is
00:17:43I know it sounds as phony as it ever did
00:17:45But
00:17:45Hey, oh
00:17:46Sit down, will you please
00:17:48You're the, uh
00:17:49Watching at the Huntington oil fields?
00:17:50Oh, yes, sir
00:17:51I've been with the company for over 22 years
00:17:53Sit down
00:17:53Will you tell Mr. Hayes and hear exactly what happened?
00:17:56Well, sir
00:17:57Like I said before
00:17:58I was just closing the gate for the night
00:18:00When I saw this fellow coming up
00:18:01I was never so scared in my life
00:18:03Yes, go on
00:18:05Well, it wasn't the man so much as the suit he was wearing
00:18:08Well, he wouldn't stop when I hollered at him
00:18:11He just pushed his way right in through the gate
00:18:13And walked right up to the tank
00:18:15Now, you carry a gun?
00:18:16Did you try to stop him?
00:18:17Oh, well, there was much to close the tank
00:18:19I was afraid to shoot
00:18:20So I thought I might call for him
00:18:22And just I got to the shack
00:18:24The tank blew up
00:18:26Oh, you should see the sight
00:18:28Yeah, I don't
00:18:28Uh, sir, can you give us a description of this man?
00:18:31How would you say he was dressed?
00:18:33Well, sir, like I said before
00:18:35He wore a sort of a
00:18:36A sort of flyer's
00:18:38Uh, not outfit
00:18:39With that helmet attached to it
00:18:41How tall was he?
00:18:42Oh, he was a giant of a man
00:18:44And he had tubes sticking out of that thing
00:18:47That helmet he wore
00:18:48Uh, can you tell us what his face looked like?
00:18:52Well, sir, though you got pretty close to me
00:18:54I could swear the man had no face
00:18:57Now, if you saw this man again
00:18:59Would you recognize him?
00:19:00I mean by his outfit
00:19:01Oh, I'll never forget that sight
00:19:03If I lived to be a hundred, sir
00:19:06Would you say this is the man?
00:19:08Wait, sure
00:19:09That, that's him
00:19:10Thank you very much
00:19:11You may go now
00:19:13All right, sir
00:19:14Thank you
00:19:17Well, Higson
00:19:18What do you say now?
00:19:20Beats me
00:19:21Descriptions check, all right
00:19:24This could be some kind of flying suit
00:19:25High altitude equipment
00:19:27Yeah, that's what I've been thinking
00:19:28Well, how do you explain that stuff about the missing head?
00:19:31Nah, we can discount that
00:19:33These people were frightened
00:19:34Tonight
00:19:35Nobody really took a close look at him
00:19:37I guess you're right
00:19:37But whoever he is
00:19:39That outfit doesn't look like one of ours
00:19:41Of course
00:19:41He could have been dropped by parachute
00:19:44You mean sabotage?
00:19:47I think we'd better wire a report to Washington
00:19:49See what they say
00:19:49Yeah, you can use our teletype
00:19:52I'll tip off the only place
00:19:53Too pleased to be on the lookout
00:19:54For something unusual
00:19:55Hey, wait a minute
00:19:56What about the press?
00:19:57Oh, I don't think they know too much now
00:19:58We'd better keep it that way for a while at least
00:20:00Till we find out whether our friend is still around here
00:20:03Well, if he is, I think we can find him for you
00:20:05My hunch is that he's
00:20:07He's carrying something around
00:20:08That's causing all this disturbance
00:20:09Whether he knows it or not
00:20:17Yeah
00:20:18Kill that page one lead
00:20:19Hey, let the boarder and the girl go
00:20:22Hmm?
00:20:23How do I know?
00:20:24Maybe the lieutenant thinks
00:20:25That the guy in a flying suit
00:20:26Knocked off the husband
00:20:28Mm-hmm
00:20:28Nah
00:20:29No, no, not a chance
00:20:30Not a chance of an exclusive on that picture
00:20:33They're making a blanket release in the morning
00:20:36Hmm?
00:20:37Oh, there's a guy from the communications commission in there now
00:20:40Yeah, I'll call you back later if there's anything new
00:20:42Okay
00:20:48Come in
00:20:49Sorry to interrupt you, lieutenant
00:20:51Yo, what is it, Jim?
00:20:52There's a teletype hand for you
00:20:53Oh, thanks, Jim
00:20:54We're waiting for it
00:20:55That was fast
00:20:58Well, here's our answer
00:21:00Looks like they never sleep in Washington
00:21:02Says to contact a Major Andrews
00:21:04Care of Dr. Wyatt
00:21:05Director of the Griffin Institute
00:21:08It's kind of late
00:21:09May I give him a call
00:21:10Well, you're right
00:21:11And I'll go out the car
00:21:12And check from the Central
00:21:13Okay
00:21:22Well, that's the story up till now
00:21:24We got in touch with Washington
00:21:25They told us to contact you here
00:21:30Very interesting
00:21:32What do you think, doctor?
00:21:36When I see something like this
00:21:37I understand why you gentlemen
00:21:38Might have thought sabotage was involved
00:21:42Lieutenant, are you sure
00:21:43There were no traces of this saboteur
00:21:45This X-man
00:21:46Found after the explosion in the oil field
00:21:49Fire department went over every inch of the area
00:21:52Didn't come up with a thing
00:21:54Well, then there's a strong possibility
00:21:56That he might have perished in the explosion itself
00:21:58I doubt that
00:22:01We're pretty well convinced
00:22:02This man is carrying something
00:22:04That's responsible for all the signal interference
00:22:08According to the last report I got
00:22:10There was a death in the disturbance
00:22:11About three miles east of the oil fields
00:22:15Sometime after the explosion
00:22:17Well, then if he's alive
00:22:18You should be able to keep an accurate check
00:22:20Of his whereabouts
00:22:20It's not that easy
00:22:21As a matter of fact
00:22:22We lost contact about three quarters of an hour ago
00:22:24Maybe he realized you were trailing him
00:22:26And got rid of whatever he had
00:22:27That was causing the disturbance
00:22:29In that case
00:22:30There's nothing much my department can do to help you
00:22:33I guess it's up to us
00:22:36Unless you have some suggestions
00:22:37Well, let me think out loud for a minute
00:22:41It might just be
00:22:42That what we've been talking about so far
00:22:44And this phantom, as we'll call him
00:22:46Ties in with what the doctor and I've been discussing
00:22:49That is very possible
00:22:52I don't know whether you know it or not
00:22:54But somewhere around 7.30 this evening
00:22:56Our radar networks
00:22:58Picked up an unidentified object
00:22:59Off Point Barrow, Alaska
00:23:02They traced it clear down to Santa Monica
00:23:04Before they lost it
00:23:05Santa Monica
00:23:07That's where we first picked up our radio interference
00:23:09Yeah
00:23:11Right at the scene of the murder
00:23:12Well, then
00:23:13If all these things tally up
00:23:14We've got some idea
00:23:15Of how our man got here
00:23:16You mean that he came in some plane?
00:23:19In that case
00:23:19Somebody would have seen it land
00:23:21And take off again
00:23:22Or did it crash?
00:23:24No
00:23:25No, we don't think it was a plane
00:23:27No rocket or jet
00:23:29That has been built so far
00:23:30Can attain the speeds of 5,000 miles an hour
00:23:33Particularly for such a great distance
00:23:35And maybe we're on the wrong track altogether
00:23:38Couldn't your unidentified object have been a meteor?
00:23:42They travel at a terrific speed
00:23:44Yes, fast enough for most of them
00:23:46To burn themselves out
00:23:47The moment they hit the Earth's atmosphere
00:23:50And did it occur to you
00:23:52That meteors are not very likely
00:23:54To travel horizontally
00:23:55All the way from the North Pole to California?
00:24:00Well, if it wasn't a meteor
00:24:01A flying missile of some type
00:24:05How do you figure this phantom tide in?
00:24:07We're not sure that he does
00:24:09I don't care what you say
00:24:11But it doesn't make sense to me
00:24:14Anybody trained in sabotage
00:24:16And say undercover
00:24:18This guy's walking around in a monkey suit
00:24:21Killing people
00:24:25Excuse me, Dr. Watt
00:24:26Is there a Lieutenant Bowers in here?
00:24:28Oh, yes
00:24:28What is it, Miss?
00:24:30There's a Mr. Waitman from the Chronicle
00:24:31Here to see you
00:24:32Waitman here?
00:24:34What does he want?
00:24:36Well, there's only one way to find out
00:24:37Before you go, Lieutenant
00:24:39I don't believe you have met my assistant
00:24:41Barbara Randall
00:24:43Well, hello
00:24:44Hello
00:24:47It's Mrs. Randall, Lieutenant
00:24:49I'll be right back
00:24:52Barbara
00:24:53You know the major?
00:24:54Of course
00:24:54And this is Mr. Hayden
00:24:55Of the Communications Commission
00:24:56How do you do?
00:24:58Well, I see you are working a little later tonight than usual
00:25:00Yes, my husband's teaching a late class
00:25:02And he won't be able to pick me up for a while
00:25:04Besides, I had some work to do in the lab
00:25:06Well, at least you'll have lots of company
00:25:10All right
00:25:10Sorry, shouldn't have come up here
00:25:12But I've got to get your angle on this peach murder
00:25:14And your whole department is shut up
00:25:16Look, waitman, will you stop bothering me?
00:25:18There's nothing to say
00:25:20If you've got an exclusive story
00:25:22If you've got an exclusive story
00:25:22If you're not Evans, Damon, or Barbara
00:25:23Then you know as much as I do
00:25:25Yeah, but that still doesn't explain anything
00:25:27About the guy without a head
00:25:28Come on
00:25:29Who is it?
00:25:31Your guess is as good as mine
00:25:34You mean you let those two kids go
00:25:36Without knowing that?
00:25:38I don't buy it
00:25:38Well, I did
00:25:40Well, then you must have an awful good reason
00:25:44I bet you're trying to tie it in with that other murder
00:25:49All right, Lieutenant
00:25:50Don't tell me
00:25:52I'll get my story somehow
00:25:56Oh, if you want to know how things turn out
00:25:58Read the Chronicle in the morning
00:26:02That's right
00:26:04I get in touch with Charlie and Mobile One
00:26:06And have them call for me here
00:26:08Won't you come up with anything?
00:26:10No, they're just briefing Barbara here
00:26:12It's just amazing
00:26:13The way you've been able to put these things together
00:26:16Don't kid yourself, Miss, uh, Mrs. Randall
00:26:19It seems the press knows as much about it as we do
00:26:22Well, let's hope they don't come to the same conclusions
00:26:25A few lurid headlines
00:26:27And every fool on the contrary
00:26:28Will be seeing phantoms and space suits
00:26:30And men from Mars all over the place
00:26:32Yes, I can imagine
00:26:34And mass hysteria is difficult to check once it gets started
00:26:37That's why we've got to move fast
00:26:39Well, from the looks of things
00:26:41I guess it's up to me
00:26:42I'll be in touch with you as soon as I try
00:26:45See you
00:26:46By 12.30 a.m.
00:26:48The dragnet was in operation
00:26:50Mobile units patrolled the streets and countryside
00:26:53They covered an area 35 miles square
00:26:58Special and sensitive equipment was prepared for action
00:27:02Everyone on the job was ready to move
00:27:05On the first signal from the Communications Commission
00:27:09Monitor Corona to Mobile Center, Strength 4
00:27:13Brickyard at 160th, moving toward oil fields
00:27:17Contact your units, over and out
00:27:21Units 1 and 7 from Mobile Center
00:27:23Units 1 and 7 from Mobile Center
00:27:26Units 1 and 7 from Mobile Center
00:27:26Strength 4, interference at 160th in the oil field
00:27:29Moving due east
00:27:31Close in
00:27:32Repeating
00:27:33Strength 4, interference at 160th in the oil field
00:27:36Close in
00:27:37Close in
00:27:39Close in
00:27:41Close in
00:28:03You're here Joe. Just got here, trying to set this up. What gives, Jason. It's in this area, all right.
00:28:10Thank you, Doctor. Well, it doesn't register as far as the oil field. I think we'll do better if we
00:28:15split up. Right, Lieutenant. You two go that way, Lieutenant, out here. Joe, you follow him. Come on, Doctor. And
00:28:20you? Oh, forget it.
00:28:41Hey, Hazen, look at this. Yeah, point's this way. Hey, Joe. Joe.
00:29:02Hey, Hazen. Hey, Hazen. 6-0-3.
00:29:10We're going strong. That's it, Doctor.
00:29:26It's leading this way. Come on.
00:29:58It's this way. Come on.
00:30:16Come on.
00:30:20Come on.
00:30:31He checks with me sure does he's here we saw him there he goes
00:30:46somewhere yeah we gotta get the roof let's go get away
00:30:52I'm
00:30:53the
00:31:26We'll give you ten seconds to come out of the air, starting now.
00:31:30One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:31:40We're going in.
00:31:41A couple of you guys cover the door.
00:31:42Come on.
00:31:53Hi, there's nobody in here.
00:31:55It's impossible.
00:31:56We saw him come in.
00:31:57Maybe he went out of the window.
00:31:58We won't get very far.
00:31:59Don't touch anything until we check the fingerprints.
00:32:02What happened?
00:32:02Over here.
00:32:04He left his suit in his helmet.
00:32:06Hey, let's spread that thing out so I can get a good shot of it.
00:32:08Give away, you fool.
00:32:09What's the matter?
00:32:10For your information, that's a Geiger counter, and it says hands off.
00:32:13I think you'd better wait outside.
00:32:14I just have a job to do.
00:32:16So do we.
00:32:16And I'm afraid ours will have to come first.
00:32:18There's no radiation from the helmet.
00:32:20But look at this.
00:32:24So that's what's been causing all the trouble.
00:32:27Charlie, you know where we can pick up a lead-lined box in a hurry?
00:32:30Well, Mobile 7 should have one right outside.
00:32:33I'll take a look.
00:32:33Hurry it up, will you?
00:32:34Unbelievable.
00:32:35Now, we all thought that this tantrum might be carrying some device
00:32:38which was causing all the signal interference,
00:32:41especially when that it's due to the very close on his body.
00:32:44That's not the only thing that bothers me.
00:32:47Did any of you get a good look at his face?
00:32:49Not me.
00:32:49He's too far away.
00:32:50Well, I did.
00:32:51Unless I'm mistaken, that helmet was empty.
00:32:54Hey, where am I going to put this stuff?
00:32:56Oh, put it to Dr. Wyatt's station room.
00:32:57Yeah, we take it back to the Institute.
00:32:59Right.
00:33:01No, that's all right.
00:33:04You can't handle that.
00:33:20Any luck?
00:33:20Not a sign of him.
00:33:22The boys are still searching the grounds.
00:33:24For what?
00:33:25Nobody knows what he looks like without that outfit.
00:33:27Well, better not, Major.
00:33:28The reporter got a flash picture of him,
00:33:30and I just happened to borrow that film.
00:33:31It's on its way to headquarters right now to be developed.
00:33:33Good.
00:33:34Send us a present as soon as you can.
00:33:35Sure.
00:33:36Lieutenant, are you sure you don't want to come with us?
00:33:38We want to make a few tests at the lab.
00:33:40I'd like to, doctor.
00:33:42But you know the situation.
00:33:43I've got to get that guy.
00:33:44Let me know how you make out, will you?
00:33:45Yeah, we'll do that.
00:33:46Sure.
00:34:06Let me know how you make out.
00:34:41Let me know how you make out.
00:34:54Good evening, doctor.
00:34:56We were just on our way home, and we saw you drive in.
00:34:58Good evening, Barbara.
00:34:59Hello, Bill.
00:35:00I see we've got to you just in time.
00:35:02Anything new?
00:35:03Lots of excitement, but that's all.
00:35:05Major, you know Barbara's husband?
00:35:07Oh, of course.
00:35:08How are you?
00:35:08How are you?
00:35:09There, it's a nice-looking dog you've got there.
00:35:11What's his name?
00:35:12His name?
00:35:13Venus.
00:35:14Say, Bill, I hate to ask this, but something important has come up, and I wonder, can we borrow Barbara
00:35:20for about an hour or so?
00:35:21Well, I suppose so.
00:35:23Of course.
00:35:25Darling, why don't you go and do the shopping?
00:35:27Here's the list.
00:35:28The market's open all evening.
00:35:30I may as well.
00:35:32See you later, darling.
00:35:34I'll take the dog and tie her up.
00:35:36Thank you, Bill.
00:35:37Good night.
00:35:37Good night.
00:35:39I'll give you a hand with it.
00:35:40Oh, thanks, Doc.
00:35:41Easy now.
00:35:42Look out for your fingers.
00:35:43All right.
00:35:47Look out.
00:35:48Now, don't drop it.
00:35:50Bill, come back here.
00:35:51Bill, come back here.
00:35:52Bill, come back here.
00:35:53Bill, come back here.
00:36:28You know you're not allowed in here.
00:36:32Venus, I said be quiet.
00:36:34Come on, Bill.
00:36:46Now, you stay right here, Venus.
00:36:48And I don't want to hear one sound on it.
00:36:56You were right, Doctor.
00:36:58There are no fingerprints anywhere.
00:37:00What's all this?
00:37:01Hey, don't touch anything.
00:37:03You better put some gloves on.
00:37:04Our friend, Mr. X, left this suit at the oil refinery.
00:37:08You mean you were that close to him and you didn't catch him?
00:37:10I'm afraid so.
00:37:12That's up to the police now.
00:37:13Hand me those sheds.
00:37:15I want to cut out this material to work with it.
00:37:26Say, you better have those sharpened.
00:37:27But I just bought them.
00:37:29Well, uh, here, try this knife.
00:37:36That still won't cut.
00:37:38Let me try.
00:37:47This stuff is tougher than nylon.
00:37:50Why don't I try it over a Bunsenburger?
00:38:04It doesn't burn either.
00:38:07Let's take a look at it under the microscope.
00:38:08Look, it's magnetic.
00:38:13You're...
00:38:15You're...
00:38:15Radioactive.
00:38:16And apparently indestructible.
00:38:34What's the matter?
00:38:36You tell me.
00:38:37Take a look at that weed.
00:38:44What weed?
00:38:46There is none.
00:38:50This material is one solid mass.
00:38:52Mass, yes.
00:38:58Why, you're right.
00:38:59It must be some sort of plastic.
00:39:01No.
00:39:03I'd say it's a metallic substance of some kind.
00:39:05Well, I've seen a lot of interesting alloys, but never anything like this.
00:39:09Let's try an acid test.
00:39:10All right.
00:39:11Go ahead.
00:39:15Careful now.
00:39:16We'll only take a drop or two.
00:39:19It repels acids like a raincoat repels water.
00:39:23Why, there's no reaction.
00:39:28Well, Major, this looks as though we were going to be here for a long time.
00:39:44Now we have it.
00:39:46The helmet is not radioactive.
00:39:48The suit is.
00:39:51There is no doubt.
00:39:53This spacesuit is conditioned to function above 63,000 feet.
00:39:57The human blood would boil, resulting in the body expanding to twice its size.
00:40:02And death, of course.
00:40:04I know.
00:40:06And it must withstand pressure and counter pressure.
00:40:09Also, it must be so supercharged it can function in thin atmosphere.
00:40:13Now, let's see what it is that is left in his breathing apparatus.
00:40:16Well, how are you doing?
00:40:19The gas from the helmet tank breaks down to 11% methane.
00:40:23Ordinary marsh gas?
00:40:24What's the rest of the formula?
00:40:25No, that's why I'm stuck.
00:40:27I can't figure it out.
00:40:29It just doesn't respond to any of the usual tests.
00:40:31Well, how could anyone exist on that combination of gases?
00:40:34You and I couldn't.
00:40:36But apparently, someone can.
00:40:39Doctor, are you trying to say that our X-Man doesn't breathe oxygen and hasn't the metabolism of a normal
00:40:46human?
00:40:47I really don't know.
00:40:49From what we've seen, he has some visitor characteristics which make him appear human.
00:40:55But added to them is this fabulous radioactivity that none of us could spend.
00:41:03I am present.
00:41:30I think the answer lies right here in this helmet.
00:41:33Obviously, he needs it to survive.
00:41:35Otherwise, he wouldn't have risked wearing it where he was sure to be recognized.
00:41:37As it is, he only took it off when he was cornered.
00:41:40Well, if what you say is true, how can he exist without it now?
00:41:44Let me put it this way.
00:41:45It's like a patient in an iron lung.
00:41:47Sometimes one can be removed for hours at a time without any ill effects.
00:41:50Exactly.
00:41:51And I think the same principle applies here.
00:41:53And that means sooner or later, he has to get his breathing apparatus back or die.
00:41:59I don't understand.
00:42:00Well, I've got an idea.
00:42:02If we were to return this whole outfit to where he left it, he might be tempted to come back.
00:42:12Dr. Wyatt speaking.
00:42:14Yes, he's here.
00:42:15No, thank you.
00:42:17Hello, Major.
00:42:19Still at it, huh?
00:42:20Mm-hmm.
00:42:22No, we haven't got a thing, no.
00:42:25The picture?
00:42:28Yeah, hold on.
00:42:29He says the picture the reporter took of our men didn't come out.
00:42:32I was afraid of something like that.
00:42:34The radioactivity must have burned the emulsion.
00:42:36Hello.
00:42:38No.
00:42:39No, he didn't find any fingerprints at all in his clothes.
00:42:42Did you find any?
00:42:46Not too bad.
00:42:47Hello?
00:42:49Will you wait there, please?
00:42:51We don't know what to make of this either.
00:42:53Have you heard from the communication boys yet?
00:42:56Well, let's hope they turn up with something.
00:42:58Major, excuse me.
00:43:00Hold on a second.
00:43:00Yes.
00:43:01It's Mr. Wakeman of the Chronicle.
00:43:02He insists upon seeing you.
00:43:04He does?
00:43:04Where is he?
00:43:05I told him to wait in the lobby.
00:43:06Good.
00:43:07Hello?
00:43:09Yes, our friend from the press is here.
00:43:18Don't worry.
00:43:19I wouldn't dare let anyone in on anything.
00:43:21At least not until we get something concrete.
00:43:24Right.
00:43:25All right.
00:43:25I'll see you later.
00:43:28Well, I guess I'd better see this newspaper man.
00:43:30Want to come along, doctor?
00:43:32I think I will.
00:43:41Oh.
00:43:42Hello.
00:43:43Remember me?
00:43:44Certainly, yes.
00:43:45And nice little gadget you got here.
00:43:47We think so.
00:43:48What's on your mind?
00:43:49Well, I was wondering if you might let me take a couple of pictures of that suit you brought
00:43:52up here.
00:43:53I'm sorry.
00:43:53We can't do that.
00:43:55Oh.
00:43:55Well, now, look.
00:43:56I got a wonderful picture of the guy running in the shack, and the lieutenant stuck his nose
00:44:00on my business, and what do I get?
00:44:01A blank.
00:44:18Is that you, doctor?
00:44:42Well, you must have some lead on this guy, otherwise you wouldn't have brought that suit
00:44:45up here.
00:44:46Well, let's just say we were curious.
00:44:49Oh.
00:44:59Hello, Bill.
00:45:01I'm back so soon?
00:45:02Isn't Barbara through?
00:45:04I don't know.
00:45:05She's still in the lab.
00:45:06Why don't you go up and see?
00:45:07Thanks.
00:45:08I will.
00:45:15Barbara?
00:45:17Barbara, are you in there?
00:45:19Bill, listen to me.
00:45:21I'm not alone.
00:45:22Someone is in here with me.
00:45:25I can't see him.
00:45:27He locked the door and has the key.
00:45:30I'll break the door down.
00:45:31No, Bill, don't.
00:45:32Please.
00:45:33You better get help.
00:45:35You mean I've come all the way up here for nothing?
00:45:38I'm afraid so.
00:45:39Good night.
00:45:40Yes.
00:45:40Good night, Mr. Wakeman.
00:45:42Good night.
00:45:52Good night.
00:45:54Major, come quick.
00:45:55What's the matter?
00:45:55What's the matter?
00:45:55Where's Barbara?
00:45:56In the lab.
00:45:57The door's locked and there's someone in there with me.
00:46:07I thought you said the door was locked.
00:46:09What?
00:46:09She's gone.
00:46:10Oh, come in the main entrance.
00:46:12That's the only way anybody could leave.
00:46:13I will.
00:46:13Well, in that case, we would have seen her on our way up.
00:46:15Well, then she must still be in the building.
00:46:16We'd better split up.
00:46:17I'll take the roof.
00:46:20Barbara!
00:46:22Barbara!
00:46:23Barbara!
00:46:24Barbara!
00:46:30Barbara!

00:47:16Marca!
00:47:23Any sign?
00:47:24Not yet?
00:47:26She must be around here someplace.
00:47:28Now you stay here.
00:47:29Watch the main entrance.
00:47:30And I'll check the basement.
00:47:51Marca!
00:47:57Marca!
00:47:59I'm not sure you'll be right here.
00:47:59No, no.

00:48:20you didn't find her no I better call the police but there's no telling what could happen to her
00:48:25in the meantime no no take it easy we're doing the best we can but she said she was locked
00:48:29in
00:48:30and she couldn't see who did it can you explain that no not yet
00:48:57who are you
00:49:03don't come near me
00:49:06I'm warning you don't come near me
00:49:28don't

00:52:27this is mobile center go ahead
00:52:29get hold of major andrews or dr wyatt at the institute i want to talk to either one of them
00:52:35i will do stand by mobile one
00:52:41dr wyatt speaking
00:52:43oh yes mr hazen
00:52:46yes we still at it
00:52:48lots and lots of excitement but nothing definite yet
00:52:52have you anything to say
00:52:54the trouble seems to be just about gone
00:52:57we got a flash in the direction of the observatory once in a while but i figure that's because of
00:53:01the outfit you're testing
00:53:07yes lieutenant powers ought to be here any minute
00:53:11of course how long will it take you to get up here
00:53:14good see you then
00:53:21thank you gentlemen put it down here please
00:53:24barbara
00:53:24would you mind plugging that cord in over there
00:53:27now you're going to see something very interesting
00:53:31i have to resort to ultraviolet light in order to show you what little there is left of the spacesuit
00:53:41as you can see
00:53:43it has reduced itself to this liquid and it is in an evaporating stage
00:53:48the helmet is in the lab and still intact
00:54:00this is amazing
00:54:02all the radiation in this suit would
00:54:04would be fatal to a normal human being wearing it
00:54:06of course
00:54:08and furthermore
00:54:10our respiratory system could never simulate gases such as we have found in that breathing device
00:54:16well then we have to assume our so-called x-man carried his own atmosphere with him
00:54:20excuse me
00:54:22but as a matter of curiosity
00:54:25why do we refer to this thing as a hymn
00:54:28i thought it was invisible
00:54:30under normal conditions
00:54:32yes
00:54:32yet
00:54:34mrs randall did see the imprint of a large foot
00:54:37and a masculine hand
00:54:39under ultraviolet light
00:54:41how do you explain that
00:54:43i don't know
00:54:44but
00:54:45the human body is composed of
00:54:47various elements with a
00:54:49carbon base
00:54:50like coal
00:54:51yes
00:54:53now
00:54:54suppose we maintain the same chemical composition in the body of the x-man
00:54:58but substitute silica for carbon
00:55:01silica that's glass
00:55:03exactly
00:55:04now it is possible that the body with such a base
00:55:07if it were subjected to an atmosphere foreign to its origin
00:55:11might appear invisible to our eyes
00:55:15are you trying to say doctor that we're not dealing with a human being
00:55:21i didn't say that
00:55:24on the contrary
00:55:26all the evidence points in the opposite direction
00:55:30toward a superhuman
00:55:31with an intelligence far superior to our own
00:55:34how can you tell
00:55:36first of all mrs randall saw that he has a hand
00:55:39with digits
00:55:40like our own fingers
00:55:42and a thumb
00:55:43opposing
00:55:44that alone is a sign of intelligence
00:55:46and
00:55:47he comes from a civilization
00:55:49that has developed adequate space transportation
00:55:53to enable him to travel to earth
00:55:56we have nothing yet
00:55:58but can reach even another planet in our own solar system
00:56:02that could account for the unidentified objects picked up by radar a few hours ago
00:56:06my theory is
00:56:08that
00:56:09the spaceship or whatever it was that he came in
00:56:14operated under principle of
00:56:17magnetic rather than atomic proportion
00:56:19and that
00:56:20somewhere in the outer limits
00:56:22met with the condition
00:56:23where the earth's gravity pulled it down
00:56:26and it fell into the ocean
00:56:27and that he
00:56:29managed to save his life and
00:56:31reach shore
00:56:33you can pick up any type of communications interference
00:56:36no matter how weak the signal may be
00:56:38sure thing
00:56:39we were on his trail from the minute he left the beach
00:56:42i never knew you'd carry such sensitive instruments in your car
00:56:50what you told us is very interesting doctor
00:56:52but i've got to make an official report to headquarters
00:56:55are you willing to be quoted that the criminal we're after is a creature from another world
00:57:00all i can say is
00:57:02we know that our earth is not the only planet capable of sustaining life
00:57:07in one form or another
00:57:09you can't quote that
00:57:11all i've got to go by is some footprints in a hand
00:57:14that isn't much
00:57:16no fingerprints no description no nothing
00:57:19and we're after a killer
00:57:22has it occurred to you that our ex-man has no apparent motivation for his acts
00:57:26and might therefore not be an intentional criminal at all
00:57:29you have a point there
00:57:30hey wait a minute
00:57:33come to think of it
00:57:34the young border we suspected
00:57:35he did say that the girl's husband threw the first punch
00:57:38so
00:57:38so that could have been enough to provoke the strange creature
00:57:41and the same could have happened at the second murder
00:57:44sure
00:57:45what about the fire in the oil fields
00:57:47evidently our man sensed the presence of some gases
00:57:50which he thought might be utilized in his breathing apparatus
00:57:54yeah that could account for his presence at the oil refineries
00:57:56where something went wrong causing the explosion
00:57:59too bad he got wise to us and took off his uniform
00:58:02or we'd have been able to catch up with him by now
00:58:14no he didn't utter a word
00:58:16but i'm convinced he was trying to convey a message to me
00:58:19he kept tapping out a code
00:58:21i wrote it down
00:58:23let me see that please
00:58:26doesn't make sense
00:58:28well it may be based on some mathematical system we know nothing about
00:58:32but he was trying to tell us something
00:58:35why did he run away
00:59:00what do you think of that
00:59:01hell
00:59:03Hazen must be crazy sending out stuff like that
00:59:05i guess so
00:59:06why don't you try and get a hold of him
00:59:07yeah
00:59:08mobile one from mobile center
00:59:10come in please
00:59:12mobile one from mobile center
00:59:14come in please
00:59:15mobile one from mobile center
00:59:17come in please
00:59:20hey that central calling
00:59:28you better stay here by the car
00:59:30i'll go tell hey
00:59:35yes colonel powell
00:59:36of course i'll mail you a complete report first thing in the morning
00:59:41yes sir thank you
00:59:42oh and i'm i'm awfully sorry to disturb you some late at night
00:59:46right good night sir
00:59:49he's around here this invisible guy he was in the car
00:59:51how do you know
00:59:52i was talking to randall outside
00:59:55when i heard central calling before i could get over to answer i saw the door open and shut by
01:00:00itself
01:00:00he's desperate
01:00:01for all we know he could be trying to send a distress signal to his home base
01:00:05wherever that is
01:00:06well that's hope he doesn't get through
01:00:07we've got enough problems with just one of those guys
01:00:10well at least we know he's surrounded the vicinity and it's obvious what keeps him around
01:00:14of course
01:00:15he's got to come back for what little gas there is left in this helmet
01:00:18and when he does
01:00:20oh please the most important thing is to take him alive
01:00:23if we can only make each other understand there's no telling how much science can profit
01:00:27i'll go along with that doctor
01:00:29i've got to make sure that once he's cornered
01:00:32i'll be able to hang on to him
01:00:33i think we're all agreed on that
01:00:35all right good then we must see it from his angle
01:00:37he's in an alien world
01:00:39no doubt we are as frightening to him as he is to us
01:00:42now the most important thing then is to keep calm at all costs and do nothing to provoke him
01:00:49immediately a simple plan to trap the phantom went into operation
01:00:54all obstacles to his entry were removed
01:00:57to erase any possible suspicion
01:00:59the doors were left unguarded
01:01:02and inconspicuous electric eye equipment was set up
01:01:06all this was connected to a makeshift control board
01:01:09which would immediately signal the exact location of the trespasser
01:01:14now there was nothing to do but wait
01:01:18the one road leading to the institute was blocked off to make certain no outsider would upset the plans
01:01:24or interfere in any way
01:01:27what's the big idea
01:01:29sorry nobody's allowed through here
01:01:31who says so
01:01:32lieutenant bowers orders
01:01:33oh is he up there
01:01:34he might be
01:01:35well you get word to him that joe wakeman of the chronicle is here
01:01:39sorry bud i can't leave
01:01:41what about them over there
01:01:43hey you over there
01:01:44me
