00:00Well, another blow for Nike, Kylian Mbappe signing on with On as the brand mounts a bold challenge to both
00:05Nike and Adidas in the football industry.
00:07News comes just ahead of Nike's removal from the S&P 100.
00:11Here with more is Bloomberg senior sports reporter, Randall Williams.
00:14Just to put a fine point on it, in soccer, there was Adidas, there was Nike.
00:19What is On trying to do here? Yes, with the sponsorship, but just more broadly.
00:22Well, it's an impact statement for sure because Mbappe is the World Cup's leading all-time goal scorer.
00:27He is one of the most famous athletes in the world, and he's in his prime.
00:31Like, athletes, the thing that I can't really get past is athletes generally don't leave Nike in their prime.
00:35The only people who have are Simone Biles, Roger Federer, and once upon a time, Steph Curry.
00:40But Steph still had some room to grow in 2013. He wasn't 2015, 16, or 2018 Steph. So this is
00:46remarkable.
00:47I want to talk more about On in a minute, but what does this say about Nike, the position that
00:51it's in, that they could lose somebody of his caliber in international appeal?
00:54It makes you wonder, going forward, like, they do have the ability to sign superstar athletes, but as superstar athletes,
01:00and, you know, they grow to, their stardom, let's say, grows even brighter.
01:04Do they consider Nike the best form of business, and Mbappe has decided that he'd like to pursue something different?
01:10It's a problem with saturation that Nike simply has too many athletes that they are working with.
01:15I'm just kind of curious what he's being offered, what Mbappe is being offered by On that's so appealing.
01:19Money, I'm sure.
01:20Money, for sure, but also equity, and I think equity is a part of things.
01:23Now, of course, there is a risk in taking equity that if the company goes south, then you probably should
01:27have taken a check.
01:28But with Roger Federer and with On's current trajectory, Mbappe believes that this is a brand that can survive and
01:34live long after he's done playing.
01:36It's funny to look at On, which has been around since 2010.
01:38It's a young company we associated so much with running.
01:42What do we know of its broader ambitions?
01:44I was watching the U.S. Open finals, indeed the champion wearing some on apparel now.
01:50So there is a very concerted effort that's visible to everybody that they're moving beyond just running.
01:53Well, I think you think about their biggest two moves, which is getting Roger Federer, and that was their entryway
01:57into tennis.
01:58And then on the football side, you have Mbappe now.
02:00Those are two global superstars.
02:02And so then you wonder, what sort of splash can they make elsewhere?
02:06Now, of course, these deals happened years apart.
02:08So I think they walk before they run.
02:10But in any case, you brought up the point of Nike potentially being oversaturated.
02:14And you wonder, like, from a resources standpoint, do they have the capability to give everybody everything that they need
02:20to have in this current moment?
02:22And obviously not Mbappe.
02:23What is it about the On shoe?
02:25I know there's this light spray technology.
02:27Robots are involved in the manufacturing of these shoes.
02:30What sets them apart?
02:31What makes them so appealing as this new company?
02:32Everybody, I don't own a pair.
02:34But everyone says they are incredibly comfortable, that it's lightweight.
02:37And I think we're going to find out more about Mbappe's deal, you know, the shoes, and really who wears
02:44them.
02:44The thing about wearing a cleat in particular is that it can't be worn on this set.
02:47I'm not going to wear it on set.
02:48Right.
02:48It can only be worn on one place, which is grass or, you know, normally grass or turf.
02:52And so in that instance, how does this business evolve beyond that?
02:56I think that's what On is trying to figure out.
02:58But obviously Mbappe believes in it.
03:00About 30 seconds left here.
03:01But it's interesting.
03:02The World Cup's not behind us.
03:03It still seems to be having a lot of influence here.
03:05It has been successful in the way I think a lot of organizers would have hoped here,
03:08to kind of keep interest in soccer broadly going forward.
03:10Yeah, I think, you know, when Mbappe plays again in the Euros and in the World Cup,
03:14we're going to see that shoe.
03:15And if he wins it, then this will be a big bet that On made that is going to pay
03:18off.
