00:00You know, the other day I was riding in a lift with my wife and the guy in the front
00:06seat turned around and said, I know who you are.
00:08My brother and I listen to you.
00:12And I told him, thank you.
00:13And I appreciated that.
00:15Then he started telling me about his dreams and wanted to have some advice related to how he could accomplish
00:22them.
00:23And, you know, my response during this talk and during most of the times when people ask me a question
00:31like that is always the same.
00:34If you want a different life, start living differently.
00:39If you want to change your life, then at some point you have to change your life.
00:46Now, I know that sounds obvious, but I want you to think about how often we ask God for different
00:51results.
00:52While continuing to make the same choices, we pray for peace, but keep returning to what steals our peace.
01:02We pray for growth, but keep the same habits.
01:06We ask God to open new doors while we keep walking through the same old ones.
01:13Sometimes the answer is not that you need to wait for your life to change.
01:18Sometimes you need to start living differently.
01:22Now, Jesus showed us this when he walked up to ordinary fishermen and said, follow me.
01:29Peter and Andrew, well, they already had a life.
01:34They had routines.
01:36They had responsibilities.
01:38They had their nets, their work, and an idea of what tomorrow would probably look like.
01:45Then Jesus called them into something different.
01:50Matthew tells us that they left their nets and followed him.
01:54Think about that.
01:56They could not follow Jesus into a new life while refusing to let go of the old one.
02:03And sometimes, neither can we.
02:07You see, your net may not even be something terrible.
02:11It might simply be something familiar, a habit, a mindset, procrastination, or fear, a relationship that keeps pulling you backward.
02:24A pattern you know is not working, but you keep repeating because changing it feels uncomfortable.
02:32And maybe you've been praying, God, please change my situation.
02:39But sometimes God changes our situation by first changing what we are willing to do.
02:47You see, prayer matters.
02:50Trusting God matters.
02:51But Jesus never taught passive faith.
02:55He told people to get up, to follow, to forgive, to give, to go, to serve, and to step out.
03:08You see, there comes a point when faith requires movement.
03:13If you want a stronger relationship with God, spend more time with him.
03:19If you want to understand scripture, start reading it consistently.
03:25If you want healthier relationships, change how you communicate and how you treat people.
03:32If you want to accomplish something meaningful, stop waiting until you feel completely ready.
03:40If you want more peace, stop giving unlimited access to things that constantly disturb it.
03:47Different actions can produce different results.
03:54You want different results?
03:56Do different things.
03:57Now, that does not mean that every difficult thing in your life is your fault.
04:03And that's not what I'm saying.
04:05Some things happen to you that you never ask for.
04:09People can hurt us.
04:11Life can change suddenly.
04:14Circumstances can come that you never saw coming.
04:18You cannot control everything that happens to you.
04:22But you still have choices about what you do next.
04:26That is one of the most powerful lessons we see in the disciples.
04:31Following Jesus did not make their lives easy.
04:34It gave their lives a new direction.
04:38Peter still faced storms.
04:41The disciples still experienced rejection.
04:45They still became afraid.
04:47They still made mistakes.
04:49But they were moving somewhere.
04:52They were following someone.
04:55And maybe, well, maybe you don't need to completely reinvent your life today.
05:01Maybe you just need to take the next step.
05:07Ask yourself one uncomfortable question.
05:11What am I doing right now that keeps producing a result I keep complaining about?
05:19If you can recognize the pattern, you can begin to change that pattern.
05:25Maybe today you make the phone call.
05:28Submit the application.
05:31Take the walk.
05:33Open the Bible.
05:35Apologize or forgive somebody.
05:39Stop chasing someone who keeps rejecting you.
05:42Start the project.
05:44Ask for help.
05:46Try again.
05:49Do one thing differently today.
05:52And then do it again tomorrow.
05:55And that's how a lot of real change can begin to happen.
05:59Not through one huge dramatic moment.
06:02But through small faithful decisions repeated over time.
06:06And you know what?
06:08It won't cost you any money.
06:11Just a little bit of thought.
06:13And you can completely change your life.
06:17You know, Jesus once talked about two people building houses.
06:21One heard his words and put them into practice.
06:26That person built on rock.
06:29Notice what Jesus emphasized.
06:32Not just hearing, but doing.
06:35You can listen to sermons.
06:38Watch motivational videos.
06:40Highlight Bible verses.
06:42Write down goals.
06:44Pray about your future.
06:46And all of that can be good.
06:48But eventually, something has to move from what you know into what you do.
06:56Eventually, you have to put down the net.
06:59Eventually, you have to get out of the boat.
07:02Eventually, you have to take the step.
07:05And if you've tried before and fallen back into old habits, listen to me.
07:11That does not mean you are finished.
07:14Remember Peter?
07:15He stepped out of the boat and became afraid and started sinking.
07:21But Jesus reached for him.
07:24You see, following Jesus does not mean you will make every change perfectly.
07:29It means that when you stumble, you should keep reaching toward him and keep moving.
07:37Keep learning.
07:40You keep getting back up.
07:43And don't let yesterday convince you that tomorrow has to look exactly the same.
07:48It does not.
07:50Jesus met people who had been living one way for years
07:54and invited them into something completely different.
07:59Fishermen became disciples.
08:02Matthew left the tax collector's booth.
08:06Broken people found purpose.
08:09Lost people found direction.
08:12And Jesus, well, Jesus still says the same thing.
08:18Follow me.
08:20But if you're going to follow him, eventually you're going to have to move your feet.
08:25So if you want to change your life, start changing how you live.
08:32Pray for wisdom.
08:33Pray for strength.
08:35And pray for direction.
08:37Then when God shows you the next step, I want you to take it.
08:42You don't have to know where every step leads.
08:45The disciples did not know everything that would happen when they dropped their nets.
08:50They simply knew who they were following.
08:54And sometimes that is enough.
08:57Make one faithful decision today.
09:00Then another tomorrow.
09:03And another after that.
09:04And one day, well, one day you may look around and realize your life really did change.
09:12Not because you kept wishing for something different.
09:15But because with God's help, you started doing something different.
09:21If you want a different life, start living differently.
09:26Put down the net.
09:28Take the next step.
09:30Follow Jesus and see where he leads you.
09:37My name is Douglas Vandergraaf.
09:39And I believe in Jesus Christ.
09:42God bless every single one of you.
09:46Every single one.
09:48And everyone you love.
09:53Bye-bye.
