The Election Commission of India has convened meetings with rival factions of the Trinamool Congress to resolve the dispute over the official party symbol and determine the legitimate faction. With upcoming by-elections approaching, both factions have fielded candidates claiming the original symbol. The Election Commission is considering discussions and deliberations that may lead to freezing the current party symbol and providing an alternate list of available symbols for both sides to choose from during the elections.

00:00Top political news coming in is from the Trinamool Congress.
00:02Our eyes on the key EC decision on the TMC symbol.
00:06Who is or what is the real Trinamool Congress?
00:09The rebel faction of the TMC led by LOP Ritabra Danaji
00:12has reached the Election Commission of India
00:14and the ECI basically, just to give you a quick background and context,
00:18had called both factions of the TMC
00:21Next, Mamata came to hold the meeting with the ECI.
00:24So this is going to possibly get into a discussion, debate, deliberation
00:28and eventually a decision about which faction is the real TMC.
00:33I'm joined now by Aishwarya Palewal for the latest on that.
00:37But Aishwarya, tell me this.
00:38The faction that turned into rebels, especially the members of parliament,
00:42became and merged with the NCPI.
00:44How are we looking at how this issue will be resolved?
00:48Well, you know, we have seen how there are multiple factions within the TMC.
00:52There is one faction, in fact, which broke away and which became the NCPI.
00:56But apart from that, there are others who, in fact, are wanting to contest elections on the TMC symbol.
01:02This is something that the Mamata Banerjee faction has been against.
01:05And they have written multiple letters, both to the Supreme Court
01:08and also to the Election Commission of India.
01:10With regards to that, a very crucial meeting at the moment,
01:13as we speak, Pooja, let me tell you,
01:14is taking place inside the Election Commission of India.
01:17From what we understand, there is a high possibility that the TMC symbol,
01:20the two flowers and the two petals that actually could be frozen by the Election Commission.
01:25And after that, we could see Election Commission giving a list of the available symbols.
01:30And then we will see the Election Commission giving both the factions an option to choose from the given symbols.
01:36Because can we tell you, by-elections are just around the corner.
01:38And both the factions, in fact, have rolled out candidates for this by-election.
01:45And both, very interestingly, are fighting on the old TMC symbol.
01:49So, this needs clarification.
01:50And that clarification will come in from the Election Commission of India.
01:53But clearly, it's a survival moment as much for the Trinamul Congress.
01:56We'll be tracking all that and more.
01:58Shwarya, thank you for the updates here.
