00:00A deadly crash while covering another one. An NBC News helicopter goes down in Los Angeles, killing three.
00:08Plus, the House votes again to end the war in Iran. This time, more Republicans join Democrats to challenge President
00:15Trump's war powers.
00:16And the Kennedy Center abruptly shuts its doors. Now, Trump says the renovation won't start if the courts keep his
00:23name off the building.
00:26The stories that matter. The facts you can trust from across the country to around the world.
00:34This is unbiased updates from straight arrow. Hey, everybody, I'm Christian Brian coming to you from Washington, D.C., which
00:42explains the view behind me.
00:44You're seeing a new face this morning, but unbiased updates isn't changing the facts without the spin and the news
00:51you need to start your day.
00:52So let's get right to it. We begin this morning with a devastating crash in Los Angeles where an NBC
00:58News helicopter went down while covering another deadly accident.
01:02The NBC News Los Angeles chopper was over the scene of a fatal bus crash Tuesday evening when it went
01:08down in a parking lot in Chatsworth.
01:10That's in the San Fernando Valley. The pilot and photojournalist on board were killed, along with a person on the
01:16ground.
01:16Two other people were taken to the hospital and the accident the crew had been covering was already deadly.
01:23Three people were killed in that bus crash. The helicopter was operated by Angel City Air, an aerial production company
01:30affiliated with the station.
01:32NBC Los Angeles lost contact with the chopper while it was on the air just before 7 p.m.
01:38The two people on board were Angel City Air photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marcinall.
01:45More than 70 firefighters responded and with two deadly crashes at the same scene, Los Angeles officials noted just how
01:52many people are now dealing with the aftermath.
01:55This has been a deeply traumatic day for far too many people. We need to recognize that trauma and we
02:04need to make sure that the people who need our support in the days ahead receive it. There are serious
02:10questions about what happened tonight.
02:12We share a commitment with our city partners, with our partners at Metro, federal agencies and our public safety agencies
02:21to fully understand what happened.
02:23The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are now investigating the helicopter crash alongside the LAPD.
02:31For the third time, the U.S. House has voted to end U.S. military action against Iran without congressional
02:38approval.
02:39And this time, more Republicans are joining Democrats to limit President Trump's war powers.
02:43Seven Republicans joined all Democrats voting Tuesday night, passing the resolution 220-204.
02:50That's up from four Republicans who backed a similar House measure in July.
02:54The resolution directs Trump to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress specifically authorizes them.
03:02The vote comes as the war approaches seven months, far longer than Trump initially said the fighting would last.
03:09The measure would still need to clear the Senate and it's not clear the chamber will take it up.
03:14A similar House resolution passed in July has yet to move there.
03:19And even if this one reaches the president's desk, Trump is expected to veto it.
03:24This is likely the House's last war powers vote on Iran before the midterms, but it may not be the
03:30last Iran-related vote before lawmakers leave Washington.
03:34The House could vote as soon as today on a Republican effort to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
03:41Thomas Massey from Kentucky introduced the articles Tuesday.
03:45He's accusing Hegseth of high crimes and misdemeanors over the Iran war and other military operations.
03:52Massey spent hours on the House floor reading his 34-page resolution arguing Hegseth has abused the powers of his
04:00office.
04:00He will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office and has acted in a manner
04:06grossly incompatible with his duties and the rule of law.
04:10Peter Brian Hegseth thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of
04:18honor, trust or profit under the United States.
04:22Massey has been one of the most vocal Republican critics of the Iran war, and he says he didn't tell
04:28House leaders he was about to force this fight.
04:31I didn't give anybody heads up.
04:33When they found out I was doing the Epstein discharge petition, they canceled two weeks of Congress, and I think
04:39if they found out I was going to do this, they might have canceled even more days.
04:43The two already have some history.
04:46Hegseth campaigned for Massey's Republican primary opponent in May, who went on to defeat him.
04:51The Trump administration is standing behind Hegseth.
04:55Attorney General Todd Blanche says Hegseth follows the law and is doing a phenomenal job.
05:01House leaders have to act on Massey's resolution by Thursday just before lawmakers leave Washington for an extended recess through
05:08the midterms.
05:09The people building some of the world's most powerful AI systems are warning the technology is moving too fast and
05:16could eventually slip beyond human control.
05:19Now, that warning has landed on Capitol Hill.
05:22There's a lot of talk about what to do, but so far no agreement on how far Congress should go.
05:27And the divide was on full display Tuesday.
05:30Attorney General Todd Blanche sided with President Trump, who calls fears of AI taking over the world a hoax.
05:36Blanche says the timing two months before the midterms is political.
05:41This should not be breaking news that this AI issue that's suddenly come up two months before an election is
05:48being done.
05:48The president calls it a hoax that the way this has come around today and not three months ago.
05:54I mean, I was watching the news today.
05:56Every Democrat senator suddenly races to a microphone to talk about AI after being eerily silent for months and months
06:02and months.
06:03So, to talk about the timing of this as being nothing but an effort to influence the midterms, I shouldn't
06:09have to say that out loud.
06:10House Speaker Mike Johnson says Congress shouldn't rush into new AI restrictions, but he is open to some guardrails, including
06:17independent audits and more transparency from the companies developing the technology.
06:22He also says President Trump plans to bring top AI executives to the White House within the next week.
06:28They can self-police.
06:30They can self-regulate.
06:31They don't need the government to tell them to slow it down.
06:33If they want to slow it down, they should.
06:34But we cannot have a moratorium on the development of AI, OK, because then we will lose our edge to
06:42China.
06:42And that has serious national security implications for every American family.
06:46Democratic senators are pressing Congress to move faster.
06:50Richard Blumenthal says lawmakers shouldn't leave for another recess without acting.
06:54These new models are scary.
06:57We're dealing here with real peril, not science fiction.
07:02And so there should be an urgency.
07:04We should not break for any kind of recess without dealing with AI.
07:10When it comes to new technology, Congress is seldom ever in the front of the parade or a leg far
07:15behind.
07:16But for the president to tell us not to worry, that's not enough.
07:20However, there is some movement toward a middle ground.
07:23Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he wants a light touch that addresses the most serious AI threats without stifling
07:30development.
07:31But so far, Congress hasn't agreed on what that looks like or when it will act.
07:35The Kennedy Center is now closed after its Trump-led board voted Tuesday to shut down the building for a
07:42two-year renovation.
07:43The center closed immediately after administrators warned that keeping the building open could put lives at risk.
07:49But President Trump says the $250 million renovation won't begin until an appeals court rules on the fight over putting
07:56his name on the building.
07:57A federal judge has blocked that name change, ruling the board doesn't have the authority to rename the presidential memorial
08:04without Congress.
08:05Trump says he'll appeal and if the courts ultimately rule against the center, he says the renovation won't happen.
08:13While that project is now on hold, another Trump project is finished.
08:17The president shared this photo of the new White House helipad, calling it a work of art and saying it
08:23was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
08:27It's the latest in Trump's broader makeover of the White House and its grounds.
08:31Work also continues on the new ballroom, built on the side of the demolished East Wing.
08:37And Trump has pushed projects beyond the White House, including work around the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool and plans for
08:44a triumphal arch.
08:46Finally this morning, Dolly Parton is larger than life once again, this time in cornfields across the U.S. and
08:53Canada.
08:5420 farms have turned their cornfields into giant Dolly-themed mazes this fall, celebrating her music, her career and her
09:02charitable work.
09:04Organizers actually chose Dolly for this year's country music corn maze campaign months before she died in August at 80.
09:12After her death, the project became a tribute.
09:14The mazes were created by The Maze, a Utah company that designs attractions for farms across North America.
09:22And they're pretty impressive.
09:25At one farm in Connecticut, five acres of corn have been cut into Dolly's likeness.
09:30But turning that famous look into a maze does create one particular challenge.
09:36She has a lot of it and it comes to little tips and you don't know where the next little
09:40opening is going to be.
09:41Yeah, even in a cornfield, Dolly's hair is a lot to handle.
09:46Past corn maze honorees have included Reba McIntyre, Luke Bryan and Laney Wilson.
09:51And this year's mazes are giving something back.
09:54A portion of the proceeds will go to Dolly's Imagination Library.
09:59Visitors also get Dolly trivia, photo ops and perhaps most importantly, a map.
10:05My question is, how long does it take to do all of this?
10:09Anyway, busy day ahead.
10:11Here's what we're tracking.
10:12At 10 a.m. Eastern, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and other House Democrats hold a press event on the
10:19Capitol steps.
10:20Then at 2.30, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh faces reporters after today's Federal Reserve interest rate decision.
10:27And tonight, President Trump heads to Gastonia, North Carolina campaigning with Republican Senate candidate Michael Watley ahead of the midterms.
