00:38Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:40We are getting a clearer picture of the man accused of trying to assassinate President Trump at the correspondence dinner.
00:46Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from California, did not enter a plea at his first court appearance Monday.
00:53He's facing multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination and firing a weapon during a violent crime.
01:00New court filings lay out how prosecutors say this unfolded.
01:04They say Allen booked a room at the Hilton earlier this month, then traveled across the country by train, checking
01:10in the day before the event.
01:12When arrested, investigators say he had two guns, a shotgun and a pistol, along with three knives.
01:18Prosecutors say he is not cooperating.
01:21And while the motive is still being worked out, his own writings make clear who he was targeting.
01:26Make no mistake, he says, I am targeting the administration officials.
01:32They are my targets, and I'm prioritizing from the top down the highest ranking from the lowest.
01:38And I will not hesitate to get involved in any kind of encounter with anyone who blocks me from the
01:46president.
01:47Investigators say Allen opened fire as he rushed into the ballroom.
01:51Secret Service agents returned fire.
01:53One agent was hit in the bulletproof vest and is expected to be OK.
01:58Allen was not hit.
01:59King Charles heads to Capitol Hill later today, delivering a rare address to Congress as his U.S. visit moves
02:06into its main events.
02:08President Trump will officially welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House later this morning with a military
02:14review and remarks, including a speech from the president.
02:17Then they will head to the Capitol and meet with congressional leaders before the king addresses a joint gathering of
02:23Congress this afternoon.
02:25Tonight, it wraps up with a state dinner at the White House.
02:27The visit got underway Monday, where the president and first lady greeted the royals on the South Lawn.
02:33Then the four posed for photos.
02:35They headed inside for tea, a softer start, to a visit playing out against a more complicated backdrop between Washington
02:42and London.
02:43The king becomes just the second British monarch to address Congress, following Queen Elizabeth's speech more than three decades ago
02:51in 1991.
02:52Oil prices are climbing again, as any real path to a deal with Iran still looks out of reach for
02:59now.
03:00Secretary of State Marco Rubio is dismissing Iran's latest proposal, saying it falls short of the U.S. core demand.
03:07No nuclear capability.
03:09Iran is offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but only if the United States lifts its blockade on Iranian
03:16ships and ports.
03:17The problem, there is no movement from Iran on its nuclear program.
03:22Rubio also makes clear the Strait is not Iran's to control.
03:26What they mean by opening the Strait is, yes, the Strait are opened as long as you coordinate with Iran,
03:31get our permission, or we'll blow you up and you pay us.
03:34That's not opening the Strait.
03:35Those are international waterways.
03:37They cannot normalize, nor can we tolerate them trying to normalize a system in which the Iranians decide who gets
03:43to use an international waterway and how much you have to pay them to use it.
03:47As the Trump administration weighs the Iranian offer, oil markets are reacting.
03:52Brent crude, the global benchmark, is back above $100 a barrel, hitting around $111 early this morning.
04:00U.S. crude is also pushing higher, just under $100 a barrel.
04:04President Trump and the First Lady are calling for ABC to take action against Jimmy Kimmel after his joke about
04:12Melania Trump that is now fueling a broader fight over comedy, politics, and speech.
04:18The backlash centers on a segment from Thursday's Jimmy Kimmel Live, which was a parody of the White House Correspondents'
04:24Dinner.
04:25Kimmel, playing host, joked about the First Lady's appearance.
04:28And of course, our First Lady Melania is here.
04:32Look at Melania, so beautiful.
04:33Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.
04:37The line drew sharp criticism from the White House, especially after a gunman rushed a security checkpoint at the correspondence
04:45dinner two days later and fired gunshots.
04:47On Monday, the First Lady called Kimmel's comments hateful and corrosive and urged ABC to act, writing on X,
04:55Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.
04:59How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?
05:05The president went further, posting on Truth Social that Kimmel should be immediately fired by ABC and its parent company,
05:13Disney.
05:13White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt called the comments disgusting.
05:18Who in their right minds says a wife would be glowing over the potential murder of her beloved husband?
05:24And having experienced what I did with the First Lady on Saturday night, I can tell you that she was
05:29anything but that.
05:30This kind of rhetoric about the president, the First Lady and his supporters is completely deranged.
05:36And it's unbelievable that the American people are consuming it night after night after night.
05:41Kimmel addressed the backlash on his show Monday night, rejecting the White House's characterization of the joke.
05:48It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am.
05:53It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination.
05:58And they know that I've been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular.
06:04But I understand that the First Lady had a stressful experience over the weekend and probably every weekend is pretty
06:09stressful in that house.
06:12And also, I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject.
06:16I do. And I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation
06:21with your husband about it because.
06:25The Free Speech Group Committee for the First Amendment also defended him, saying, quote,
06:30In America, satire is not a crime.
06:33The right to mock, to challenge, and yes, to offend those in power is foundational to democracy.
06:39The legal fight over a new White House ballroom is escalating.
06:43A preservation group is refusing a Justice Department request to drop its lawsuit over the $400 million project.
06:50After Saturday's shooting at the correspondence dinner, the Justice Department gave the group until Monday to walk away from the
06:57case.
06:58President Trump, along with some lawmakers, including Democratic Senator John Fetterman, argued the breach shows the need for a secure
07:05on-site venue that can hold about 1,000 people.
07:08But the National Trust for Historic Preservation is holding its ground, saying nothing about that incident alters the legal questions.
07:16The group's lawyer put it bluntly, a security event does not change the Constitution.
07:21The organization's CEO adds the project still needs congressional approval before any construction moves forward.
07:28For now, construction of the White House ballroom continues, with a federal appeals court allowing work to move ahead while
07:34the case plays out.
07:35A hearing is set for June 5th.
07:38Finally this morning, a striking look at how AI is now reaching back into the ancient world.
07:45Archaeologists have used AI to recreate the face and final moments of a man who tried to escape the eruption
07:52of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
07:56Take a look.
07:57The image looks like a frame from a film, if you will.
08:00A man holding an object over his head as ash and debris fill the sky behind him.
08:05Pompeii Archaeological Park released the digital reconstruction on Monday.
08:10Researchers built it using two sets of human remains found just outside the city walls, along with artifacts including a
08:17lamp and gold coins.
08:18The city of Pompeii was buried under ash after the eruption, preserving buildings, objects, and human remains for centuries.
08:26Now, using AI tools, researchers are turning those remains into a clearer picture of what people may have looked like
08:34in their final moments.
08:36Wow.
08:36All right, a packed day in Washington today.
08:39Markets, politics, and a royal visit all in focus.
08:42This morning, the Federal Reserve kicks off a two-day meeting with a rate decision expected Wednesday.
08:47At 9.30, President Trump hosts King Charles and Queen Camilla at the White House with a military review and
08:53remarks.
08:54Later this morning, both House Democrats and Republicans hold post-meeting press conferences on Capitol Hill.
09:00And this afternoon, King Charles addresses a joint meeting of Congress before a state dinner at the White House.
