00:24and those are things that we have to get corrected.

00:55or some normal things that go into, like a big play to go.
00:58So that's definitely the things we will identify with him,
01:01and I'm certain that he'll work on that.

01:06I mean, that was as damning of a specific player performance
01:13that you'll hear from Dan Quinn,
01:16who literally almost always takes it to the highest possible spot on the road.
01:26Like, he said, hey, man, these are things that we have to get corrected.

02:38but you can individually evaluate some players at certain positions,
02:42but you'd have to have other players on the field that are performing as well.
02:48But Amik Robertson, I thought, was solid in game one,
02:53and I thought Rasul Douglas was decent.
02:57Sandra still had to be, and I don't have the, you know, advanced grades from the various services.

06:31So, it's a dangerous game, one game.
06:35I'm not going to beat that dead horse anymore.
06:37What I thought about this team before Sunday included very little that I felt strongly about.
06:45But there were two things that I felt the most confident about heading into the season.
06:52And mentioned these things many, many times going back to the end of last year and through the offseason.
06:59Number one, Jaden Daniels needs to be healthy.
07:03And if he is, this team's going to be a competitive team that has a good chance to win more
07:08games than it loses.
07:11And number two, the defense cannot be as bad as it was last year.
07:16It's got to be better than it was last year.
07:19It would be really hard to duplicate that defense from a year ago.
07:24And knowing those two things, and if those two things happened, Jaden stayed healthy and the defense wasn't as bad
07:31as it was last year,
07:32I thought this would be a very competitive football team.
07:35And they could win more games than they lost and be in contention for a playoff spot.
07:41I didn't feel confident about anything else.
07:43I think it's, like I've said a million times, Washington's in that group of 25 to 28 teams, 7 and
07:5110 to 10 and 7, depending on the bounce of a ball, a call made, a call missed, and injuries.
07:58You know, all things you can't predict before a season begins.
08:01You know, that Goddard touchdown on that third and six, you know, I still haven't seen anything that definitively points
08:09to it was a penalty that didn't get called.
08:12But that's the kind of an example that you can't predict during the course of the year.
08:15If you get a call like that, you win a game that maybe you wouldn't have won, and it makes
08:21a big difference.
08:22Those are the two things I felt about the team before the game on Sunday.
08:27And coming out of the game, even with my, it's one week, it's the first week, it's never a real
08:36indicator of things to come.
08:38I just can't help myself on this one.
08:42And that is to be excited, excited and optimistic that not only is it going to be hard for the
08:55defense to be as bad as it was last year,
08:58maybe there's a chance it could be, you know, a middle-of-the-pack defense.
09:04And if you get that, I know and am very confident in what the quarterback can do if he's healthy
09:14all season long.
09:14And I think you saw that, you know, after the rust of not playing since, you know, early December, barely
09:21really playing at all last year.
09:24Once you saw that rust off, even against a good team with a good defense and a good coordinator,
09:30he absolutely lit that team up on those final two drives.
09:34Nine of 11 for 100 yards, two touchdowns.
09:36He was exceptional at that point.
09:40So that's what I would say.
09:43I told you what I thought before the game.
09:46And the way I feel after the game, there's just, even though I understand this is one game and it's
09:52not a predictor,
09:53I just am a little bit more optimistic, encouraged, intrigued, and yes, actually excited that the defense not only won't
10:04be as bad as it was last year,
10:06but might make a sizable jump from where it was last year.
10:10I like the players.
10:12I like the way they played and I liked erring on the side of, you know, trying to create some
10:18chaos and be aggressive.
10:21Now, you can't give up these big plays defensively.
10:25Like, you can get 10 TFLs and three sacks and seven punts, but if you give up six explosives,
10:33it's going to wash all that other stuff out and you're going to be on the wrong side of it
10:37at the end.

10:55Um, preseason I had them 9-8, a wildcard team.
10:59I mean, there are going to be some growing pains with new play callers, especially like David Blau.
11:04I understand he's got a wealth of experience under a lot of really good coaches,
11:07but this is the first time he's calling the plays and it's on him.
11:11Um, so I understand getting cute with that two-point conversion, wanted to do something like that.
11:17I mean, the Chiefs, uh, did it for a long time and they just did it again last night with
11:22Kenny Walker.
11:23Now that wasn't really like a forward pitch, but the penetration up front that that's just going to happen,
11:28especially against a really good team.
11:29Well, they gave, they gave, let's hold on.
11:32They, they ran almost a single wing, you know, shovel pitch pass behind the line of scrabble.
11:38It wasn't the true shovel pass, but they gave it to arguably their second best player.

11:43We tried it with Bates.
11:44And so that's the problem.
11:45That is the problem.
11:46Like I, and at the end of the game, that's what I was saying.
11:49And a lot of people were saying online is give your best players the chance to make the play.
11:55And so you got to also first and goal, wasn't it for them?

11:59I believe so.
12:00So it wasn't really, it wasn't exactly like nut up or shut up time.

12:05But I'm encouraged.

12:10I mean, the team kind of came together and held strong as they were coming down the stretch.
12:15That gives me a lot of hope going forward.

12:20Uh, they, their defense did not look great.
12:22Um, but we'll see, man.
12:24The corners are going to have, uh, one hell of a, hell of a time next week against Pickens
