A dramatic construction accident in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood sent four people to the hospital Monday after a drilling rig toppled onto three vehicles and a construction container.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. near Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive. Two construction workers, ages 27 and 29, became trapped inside the crushed container and were later rescued by Miami Fire Rescue’s technical rescue team.
A BMW was also crushed in the collapse, sparking a fire. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames while rescue crews worked to free the trapped workers. Officials said the BMW driver successfully escaped the burning vehicle.
The rig operator, the BMW driver and the two trapped workers were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. All 18 workers at the construction site were accounted for.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the rig to collapse. OSHA is investigating, while police urged drivers to avoid the area because of road closures and delays.
