00:03August 31st marks Medeka Day or our nation's independence,
00:07but September 16th marks another defining moment, the start of our federation.
00:12Malaysia Day was only recognised as a nationwide holiday in 2010.
00:17The first national level celebration was held in Kuala Lumpur,
00:21but since then, celebrations have been more frequently hosted in East Malaysia,
00:25including this year's in Kuching.
00:27This follows a cabinet decision passed in 2020 to implement a rotational system
00:32between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
00:35Now, why is this significant?
00:37For one, it's a reminder that Malaysia is built on a partnership.
00:41For Sabah and Sarawak, the date has always been a reminder of the hope
00:45that East Malaysia would be recognised as an equal partner in the federation.
00:50The government said the return of celebrations to Sarawak following Penang's hosting in 2025
00:55underscores its unwavering commitment to strengthening national integration across all regions.

01:07is also in line with Sarawak's unity tagline,

01:13Bringing the celebration to Sabah and Sarawak recognises that our country's story
01:18was not written in one place and it celebrates the contributions of the states
01:22whose entry helped form Malaysia.
01:24Both Medeka Day and Malaysia Day are significant occasions.
01:29Medeka marks independence from colonial rule,
01:32but it is Malaysia Day that arguably defines the unity and multicultural identity
01:37that makes Malaysia the country it is today.
