Before releasing their new album, 'THANK GOD IT’S ALMOST MONDAY,' almost monday made a stop into our In-N-Out Burger Sound Space in Los Angeles for a special conversation and performance with an intimate group of fans.

01:17You guys met surfing? Is that true?
01:20Yes, kind of. Luke and I have been friends for, what, 20 years?
01:26Yeah, 21 years.

01:29And I met Cole through surfing. I've told this story before, but Cole's like a really great surfer.
01:36And he would wear this, like, neon orange wetsuit.
01:39And he would do these massive airs.
01:42And I was like, who is this little guy doing these massive airs?

01:47And naturally, it was like, oh, I want to be friends with that guy.
01:50And then he also played guitar, so I was like, okay, perfect.
01:54You should be in our band.
01:56And we met, and yeah, been doing it for a while.

02:01We were like 17, 16.
02:03You started playing in the back room of a surf shop?

02:34And in high school, we just invited everybody in our contacts until they showed up.

02:41And then little by little, it was more than just our friends and our family.
02:44And eventually, that sort of turned into playing bar mitzvahs and weddings.

02:52Do you guys have any highlight memories from any of those events?

02:58Again, another one we've told, but we played this wedding one time in this park, and I
03:04became like the emcee of the wedding.

03:07And it was like in this park, there's probably like 15 people who came.

03:13Well, it was our old drummer who got the gig for us.
03:17And it was very odd.
03:19And the dad like came up to me and was like, hey man, so you're good to do like the

03:29I became the emcee.
03:31I was like, all right, who's ready for the father-daughter dance?

03:52Did you guys have a favorite wedding song or bar mitzvah song that you really love playing?

04:38So, 2020 happens and everything shuts down and you guys put out an EP.

04:46And where do you get this positive vibe from?

04:52That was crazy.
04:55That was a crazy song to put out right there.
04:58Yeah, we had, it was a really cool time for us because we were in college and we had been
05:02doing the band and we got signed and like dropped out and was like, oh my gosh, we're doing it.
05:07Like, this is amazing.
05:09Our parents are probably devastated.
05:11But then COVID hit.
05:14We were on tour with a band called AJR and it was like our first big tour.
05:18Like we had only played the surf shop basically.
05:21Right.
05:21And then we're in front of like, yeah, bar mitzvahs, weddings.
05:24And then it was like, oh my gosh, there's like thousands of people here.
05:27And then COVID hit and it was pretty devastating because it was like, dang, dude, we should not have dropped
05:33out of college.
05:35But we just like shout out to our label.
05:38They just let us keep releasing music.
05:40I feel like a lot of people stopped releasing music.
05:42And yeah, nice.
05:45And they just let us keep releasing music.
05:48And then our first show back from COVID was Lollapalooza.
05:53Oh my God.
05:54Another crazy moment of like, wow, people know our songs and they're like singing them.
05:59So it's pretty cool.
06:01Yeah.
06:01It's stuck.
06:01So you guys came out of the pandemic and you jumped right into playing Lollapalooza.
06:06Yeah, that was gnarly.
06:07Oh my God.
06:08And then at that point you started making songs for Dive.
06:13Like, was it shortly after that?
06:15Yeah.
06:15So what was it like during that time?
06:17What do you feel like you learned?
06:20And again, with these bright and sunny songs in such a dark world, like what is inspiring you guys?
06:26Yeah.
06:27I remember the song that we wrote.
06:29We wrote a song called Sunburn and it was kind of like, this is going to sound weird,
06:36but it felt like that was the first song that we were like, oh, that's just kind of like us.
06:40And like, we weren't really like trying to do it.
06:42And I think a lot of artists go through this trying to figure out like what you are and like,
06:47or if you're trying to project something.
06:49Right.
06:49So Sunburn was kind of an important song because it was so us in terms of just like, we're pretty
06:56stoked guys.
06:58And, you know, that song kind of reflects that.
07:01And I don't know.
07:01Sometimes you feel like guilty for maybe like there's a lack of depth in that to being just like, we're
07:06stoked and this is fun.
07:08But there's some beauty in that too, I think.
07:10There are a lot of people who need we're stoked and this is fun.
07:13There are a lot of people who really need that in today's world.
07:16Yeah.
07:17So that kind of was like, you know what, let's just do us.
07:21And yeah, so that song is kind of the catalyst for Dive, which is cool.

07:28Yeah.

07:33So when Can't Slow Down comes out, do you feel like that changed your life when that song dropped and
07:40blew up?
07:46Not really, I feel like.
07:48To be honest.

07:49I feel like we were just so in the, like the, we're just touring a lot and making a lot
07:55of music.
07:55And then, you know, putting it out and it just does what it does.
07:59But I mean, we're really proud of it and we're really shocked to see how much it got played.
08:04And like pretty crazy brought us to places and things that we wouldn't have expected it to.
08:10But yeah.
08:12Did you guys ever have a moment where you met someone that you really admired?
08:17Like maybe when you were playing a festival or something, like a point where you were starstruck or you're going,
08:22how did we get here?
08:25Yeah.
08:26Kind of all the time.
08:27I had it today here because there's so many, if you guys see all the names on the wall.
08:32And I was like, whoa, this is really cool.
08:33And they're like, yeah, your guys' names up there.
08:35And we went over and I kind of like was like, whoa, really?
08:39We got?
08:40Yeah.
08:41You're at that level.
08:42You're almost Monday.
08:44That was cool.
08:46I'm like, are they just going to like erase it?
08:49And it's like, no, you're not big enough to be here.
08:51So today, I guess.
08:54Did Can't Slow Down make things difficult for you touring?
08:59Like did it require more than you were ready to show?
09:04If that makes sense.
09:05Can't Slow Down was interesting because it took a long time.
09:08It like really slowly built.
09:10So like the song had been out for a while.
09:12So it's kind of like, it's kind of like our career in a lot of ways that it, like we've
09:16kind of just showed up over time.
09:18Like there hasn't been like a crazy TikTok moment or something like that.
09:21We've just kind of just put in the time and gone through all the little venues.
09:25And now, you know, first time.
09:26This tour is like the first time going to Thousand Cap Rooms, which is like a big monumental kind of
09:31thing.
09:32And that's really exciting and like scary, but cool.
09:35So I think it's just like you kind of start feeling.
09:38It's funny because we started to see it in the crowd.
09:41Like it was the audience was much wider and like different.
09:45And we had some older folks.
09:46Did you say wider or whiter?
09:50Whiter as a more diverse.

09:53To be clear.

10:10So with Thank God It's Almost Monday, how was it writing this record?
10:15Because I would assume you were probably on the road and touring and then putting this
10:19record together.
10:20So what, you know, what was your experience like making this new record?
10:26Yeah, I think we're really proud of it.
10:30And I think it was making this album was kind of interesting because like you said, we were
10:37touring a lot and it was sort of like we finished and it was like, okay, this is like
10:42the time now to like make your second album.
10:45And it just feels like what you do.
10:46And I feel like at least personally, I was a little like, what do we want to say?
10:51Like, I don't really know what to say right now.
10:53I'm just kind of like.
10:55You're tapped.
10:55Yeah, a little bit.
10:56Like, I just want to be home and like see my friends and stuff, like pet my cats.
11:04And what was really beautiful about this album is I think that we just showed up and made
11:10it.
11:11And last year was like equal parts, like the best year of our lives and the hardest for
11:16just some personal reasons, just going through loss and just a lot of crazy life stuff.
11:22So when we finished and went, okay, this is an album.
11:27I, what I'm really proud of it is that there's songs that reflect like your best year of your
11:32life.
11:33So much excitement.
11:34And then there's songs that we kind of went just a little bit deeper with.
11:40And I think that's kind of like just being a human.
11:43Like you can just absolutely have the best year and the worst year of your life in one
11:48year.
11:48And that's just kind of life.
11:49Like it's not just one or the other.
11:52And I'm really proud of us because I, like I said, the dive felt like we're just stoked
11:59to be signed and dropped out of college.
12:02And it kind of reflects that.
12:03And this one, I feel like we grew up a little bit and like experienced life a little bit
12:08more like at us.
12:09And a lot of crazy things happen, you know, and you change.
12:13And, but I'm really glad that we, that we allowed this album to be both.
12:18And I think that's like, um, my wife's a therapist.
12:22So, which is crazy.
12:23I'm like this guy in Spain, but she was like, that's healthy coping.
12:27And I was like, that's cool.
12:27Yeah.
