00:01Hello you beautiful people.
00:02Alright.
00:03How the hell are ya?
00:04Wow!
00:05Welcome!
00:07For the very first time we get to say this and this is exciting for us because I think
00:10this is the greatest partnership in the history of partnerships between K-Rock and In-N-Out.
00:15Welcome to the In-N-Out Burger sound space at K-Rock.
00:19It only makes sense.
00:20In-N-Out's been making incredible burgers for decades and K-Rock has been putting out
00:25great music for decades so it's a partnership that we are happy about, we are thrilled about,
00:29and of course we're kicking it off with an incredible band.
00:33Who's ready for some bleachers, huh?
00:35Yeah.
00:36So here's how it's gonna work.
00:38We're gonna chat with Jack for a little bit and it's always fascinating, he was recently
00:41on our radio show which he called the most riveting hour of radio we've ever put on.
00:45I think he was lying.
00:46But he's not wrong.
00:47And then we're gonna of course bring the band out and we're gonna listen to some new music
00:50and of course some bleachers and that's gonna be very exciting.
00:52And then you guys will get to hear all of this as it airs on K-Rock Sunday night at
00:579pm.
00:57So you guys will all get to be radio stars and look how it's changed our lives.
01:03So don't fuck it up.
01:05Alright everybody, let's bring out Jack Antonoff.
01:08The great Jack Antonoff.
01:15Hi Jack.
01:15Keep it going for Jack Antonoff.
01:21Hey.
01:25Hey there, congratulations.
01:27A new album.
01:28Let's go.
01:29We'll celebrate everything and we got a lot to talk about and as you know we have no shortage
01:32of things to discuss.
01:33Including our mutual love of Wawa.
01:35But let's begin with this.
01:38Wawa!
01:38Fifth Bleacher's album.
01:39Any traditions?
01:40Anything exciting that you do?
01:42Superstitions before the album officially hits the public May 22nd?
01:46I listen to every album I made like a few days before.
01:50I know a lot of people who do that and it's nice.
01:53In order, front song to last song, every album you've made?
01:56Yeah, what do you mean?
01:57I don't know.
01:58Maybe you put on shuffle.
02:01You don't shuffle Jack?
02:02No, I really don't shuffle actually.
02:05You make a point to listen to every album from start to finish.
02:07I listen to every album and then I'll listen to the new one and then I'll feel really like
02:13in touch with the journey.
02:15Does anything come up when you reach the new album that once you listen to everything
02:24that you just listened to changes your perspective on the new one?
02:28Like anything you would want to change?
02:30No, I don't think like that.
02:31I don't ever want to change anything.
02:34Must be nice to be talented like you.
02:36We have lots of regrets all the time.
02:37Just constant regrets.
02:39No, I'm filled with regrets in other ways.
02:42But not with the music.
02:44I think that's why I stay in the studio and stay on tours.
02:47That's the one place where I really, for lack of a better word, feel myself.
02:55But everywhere else is really complicated.
02:58There's food, I think all the time.
02:59I don't know what I want to eat and then I go somewhere and then I regret it and then
03:03I want to go somewhere.
03:04You know?
03:05You guys understand that, right?
03:07Yeah.
03:07That's real.
03:08The song that you performed on Kimmel last night, which is called The Van.
03:13It's a great song, by the way.
03:14Hopefully we hear that today.
03:15Ali and I have been fighting this fight against, you know, most of the news about vans in the history
03:19of our lives.
03:20It's all bad.
03:21It's one of the first things I learned as a kid.
03:22Avoid vans, avoid van drivers.
03:22Kidnapping.
03:23Yeah, my whole life growing up was stay away from the van.
03:26Avoid vans.
03:26Yeah.
03:27And we have been fighting, we do a thing on our show called Good Van News where we try to
03:30profile any stories involving vans that are good.
03:32This song, I think, could be the official anthem that turns around the entire public perception of vans.
03:37Well, when we would tour and we'd be in the van, we'd see other vans and we'd either go, we'd
03:41hope it was another band, but it was often a church group.
03:45Right.
03:46Or just a sketch ball.
03:49Yeah.
03:49Those are the three options, pretty much.
03:50I think that's better.
03:51I think that with GPS and whatnot, there's a lot less, you know, when I was growing up, my mom
03:58had it in my head that, like, anywhere I went, there would be like six to fifteen vans waiting to
04:03take me.
04:04And so I was terrified.
04:05They're all just waiting with candy.
04:06When we, like, got out at the rest stop, like, we'd be like, go, go!
04:09And, like, I, like, thought someone was, which is a bit arrogant that anyone would want to take me.
04:14You were that popular as a kid.
04:15Right.
04:15But also, I think back then, I don't know if it was the same for you, my parents just didn't
04:20know where I was a lot of the time.
04:21So just a, hey, watch out for vans on the way out, I think was their only way of protecting
04:27us.
04:27The whole van thing, from when I was growing up, really, like, makes me feel like a big premium was
04:33put on, like, candy and gifts.
04:36Like, there was no age where any stranger could get me to do anything, personally, because I just didn't want
04:42to be around.
04:42You didn't want those things.
04:43Yeah, so maybe that's something.
04:44Yeah.
04:45But this archetype of, like, candy was so, like, I don't know, I was always being told there was, like,
04:49candy and vans and a stay away.
04:51Now there's so much better shit out there to bribe people with, I think.
04:55That's a creepy comment, Allie.
04:56No.
04:57Keep track of the creepy comments today.
04:58I'm not saying I have experience.
04:59That never crossed my mind.
05:01But it's interesting, because...
05:03Allie's like, there's nicer vans, they're more welcoming, and we have things we get the people in, and...
05:08I feel like this interview just became evidence now, in a future trial.
05:12Let's talk about one lyric that has been popping out at me, and I think also has been just something
05:18that's been popping up since the album got announced.
05:20Only My People Can See Me, this idea, you know, where you have your people, and they are the only
05:26ones who can truly see you.
05:28But as long as you've been in this industry, how do you find your people in an industry where there
05:33can be a lot of misrepresentation of people, leeches, people who are inauthentic, et cetera?
05:39I have people in vans trying to take you.
05:43Maybe there's some creeps out there.
05:45Radio people who have a van and shifts.
05:46Sure.
05:50To do what... to not follow anyone else.
05:53You know, when the band started, the first song I put out was I Want To Get Better, and it
05:56was really intentional, because I thought to myself, like, I don't want anyone having misgivings about who I am or
06:03where this thing is going.
06:04So, you know, because I remember at the time, everyone was like, oh, we should put out, like, Roller Coaster
06:09first.
06:10You know, it's such a catchy song.
06:10And I was like, I love that song, but, like, there's this other song I wrote, and I wanted to,
06:17like, I remember telling this to everyone, I want to, like, sift out anyone who's not going to get it.
06:21Which they thought was, like, maybe a problem, but it's nice to just come forward as who you are.
06:28And then you're just on a journey and a conversation with your people, and it goes this way and it
06:33goes that way, but I'm not ever taking my eye off of them.
06:38And it sounds reductive, but if you just do the things that you love and are really authentic about what
06:43you do, it's hard to lose sleep at night.
06:45But there's a lot of forces trying to push people this way and that way, more than ever.
06:49So I think it must be really hard to be starting out and have so many fucking opinions, you know,
06:54hurled at you.
06:55And no one knows what to do, you know?
06:58Music, it's completely magic and about a feeling.
07:01You can't put a group of people together and it'll just equal the sum of their parts.
07:05It's all fucked up, you know?
07:07Like, the greatest artist in the world might not be able to make something as good as some fucking random
07:13kid in Kansas tomorrow.
07:14So that's, like, the fun of it.
07:15And I think a lot of people are trying to take the fun out of it out and mass produce
07:19it and package it and find all these ways.
07:21And then they keep dying.
07:22And then we're just left with good music or not good music.
07:24So I try to just stay there and not get too angry while I'm on the circle.
07:28But I think everyone feels that way.
07:30Exhausted of being marketed towards too much.
07:33Exhausted of being kicked into, like, an algorithmic position.
07:38You feel me?
07:39Yeah, I hear you.
07:40I got deep.
07:41Everyone for 10 minutes comes out pretty much a month from tomorrow.
07:44And how do you picture people listening to this album?
07:47How do you picture a person that wants to listen to this the way you would listen to it?
07:51Is it driving around the streets of Southern California?
07:54Is it pumping their own gas or trying to in Jersey even though they can't?
07:57I mean, it's kind of anywhere.
07:58You know, it never ceases to amaze me, you know, the songs that are really sad or deep for me
08:04or joyful for someone else or vice versa.
08:07So I don't have, you know, like, I'm always somewhere when I'm writing.
08:10Like, you know, like, You and Forever to me is so, like, night time with headphones in, like, walking.
08:17Dirty wedding dresses, so, like, driving or with people.
08:20But it's kind of, like, all I can do is, like, telegraph it how I feel it and then people
08:24take it in all different ways.
08:25And that's cool with me.
08:27Like, that's part of it is, like, oh, you guys think that's a song to listen to with friends at
08:31a party?
08:33Like, great.
08:34That's so interesting.
08:35And that continuum is with me, too.
08:38You know, when I meet people whose music I love, I'm like, oh, I love that record.
08:42And they're like, you do?
08:43Like, you know, my life was falling apart.
08:45But we take things differently.
08:47And the truth is, some of the most sad or hopeful or whatever it is work,
08:52if the honesty hits you, then it just feels good, even if it's dark material.
08:57When you're doing a tour as well on top of the album,
09:00and it's a very eclectic group of venues that you've put together.
09:04You've got big venues like Madison Square.
09:05Yeah, sorry, LA.
09:06But then you've got the troubadour.
09:07I'll tell you what I was thinking.
09:09Did you get a ticket?
09:10All right.
09:10Sorry.
09:12I'll explain.
09:13That was wild.
09:16You just got scolded.
09:18Well, I'll answer, I think, well, what was your question?
09:21And then I'll apologize to people.
09:22Why only five shows at the troubadour?
09:23What the hell's wrong with you?
09:24Well, it's tough, because, you know, at one, yeah, like,
09:28I don't want our tours to ever feel like we're just, like,
09:32bussing a circus from venue to venue, you know?
09:35And it'll never feel like that, because that's not how we play.
09:37But there's just something about different spaces that just moves you in a different way, you know?
09:41Like, I feel the band is really lucky, right?
09:43We've got, you know, I've spent my whole life playing fucking anywhere.
09:46Playing in people's garages here, whatever it is.
09:48Now we're at the point where we can choose where we play.
09:50So why not play the best venues in the world?
09:52So my thought process was like, fuck yeah, how cool that we can play Madison Square Garden,
09:56and we can play Red Rocks, and we can play here.
09:58What do we do in LA?
09:59And it's like, what if we just, you know, shocked the system
10:03and played five shows at the troubadour without any of our production,
10:06and God, I don't even know what the fuck we're going to do with those shows yet.
10:09And that's exciting to me.
10:10I don't want to, I just always want to make every night feel like the last night on earth.
10:17So, to everyone here, I'm really sorry for people who couldn't get tickets,
10:24but I promise we'll come back, and I promise also, yeah, it's really tough.
10:31It really is hard.
10:31You want everyone to see the show, but you also want to do interesting stuff.
10:34Well, and you want to make the tickets as affordable as you can,
10:37and that's a very hard thing to do these days.
10:40And I wonder what your thoughts were about this, you know, this big announcement
10:43or the court, you know, decided that Ticketmaster is a monopoly,
10:48and is that going to change?
10:49Oh, did they?
10:50They did.
10:51But then it's like...
10:51They must have had some real geniuses up there.
10:53And I'm like, wow.
10:54The same company?
10:56But then it's like...
10:56Selling the tickets and promoting the shows is a monopoly?
10:59But do you think it's really even going to change anything?
11:02What?
11:02You know?
11:03Because it's like, even though that's decided, which everybody already knew,
11:06is that going to change anything down the line, or is it up to the artists to try it?
11:09When we get Trump out of the office, we have a real shot.
11:11Because he's...
11:14And a lot of what he does is so dangerous on so many levels.
11:18Obviously, like the fucking random war we're getting into.
11:20But I'll speak about musicians, right?
11:22So when you fuck with people's ability to move around the country,
11:26whether it's gas prices, right?
11:28I'm fine, right?
11:29But I've toured at every level.
11:31And if you're playing to 100 people a night, and then gas prices go up,
11:35you can't go on tour anymore.
11:36Right?
11:37And if people are charging, you know, all these crazy fees and thousands of dollars,
11:43and regular people who just are trying to fucking get by are all of a sudden trained by big corporations
11:49to spend $400, $500, $600 on a night out for a concert,
11:52then the little bands, they don't have money to go see them.
11:56So, it just fucking sucks.
11:58It's like everything nowadays.
11:59It's what the whole album is about.
12:00We're kicking in the door to the next time period.
12:03We're in a transitional period.
12:04We all know it sucks.
12:06We all know this was a scam.
12:08And everyone's, right?
12:09Like, everyone's just trying to find some joy and some community
12:12and doesn't want every motion they made to be monetized.
12:17So, that's a big part of the tour is like, look, I can control the face value.
12:20I'll never fucking, you know, have a number on there that would make me embarrassed.
12:24It's crazy.
12:25And why would I want my shows to be for, like, only rich people?
12:28It's terrible.
12:29They're bad audience members.
12:31Well, they're all...
12:33I tend to find that people are generally at shows cool,
12:37but it should be for everyone.
12:40But yeah, you know, that Trueboro thing is a perfect example.
12:43It's like you book something and you're just like, I want to do this, I want to do that.
12:45It'll be so fucking exciting and fun.
12:47And then, because of all the powers that be, there's always someone there trying to spoil it,
12:51but we're trying to reverse the spoiling.
12:55Ali and I wanted to charge you all $1,000 to be here today, but Jack refused.
12:59So, you should thank this man for being here for free.
13:02Ali's...
13:02Ali's, uh...
13:04Ali and I said, let's make the time of these suckers.
13:06Ali's GoFundMe for a new van.
13:07We really wanted to stick it to him.
13:08Yeah.
13:09We wanted to hog more of your time, but then the band's about to come out here.
13:12Who's excited for Bleachers?
13:14But first...
13:15But first...
13:16But first...
13:16We have questions.
13:18Oh.
13:18Real questions from fake fans, or are they fake questions from real fans?
13:21Long time caller, first time listener.
13:23Yeah.
13:23First time listener.
13:24Here we go.
13:25Question number one, Ali, for Jack Antonoff, please.
13:28Alright, so this is from Eddie.
13:29You are good at so many different things, but what is something that you suck at?
13:33What?
13:34So many things.
13:36I can do one thing.
13:39Well, you can play lots of different instruments, and you can produce, and you can sing, and you
13:43can write, and...
13:43Yeah, but that's music.
13:44I can make music.
13:45I don't want to do anything else.
13:47Sorry, Eddie.
13:48Like, did you try and play pickleball, and you sucked at it?
13:51Did you make an omelette?
13:53If I had to.
13:54Right.
13:55If someone had a fucking gun to my head, I mean...
13:58I mostly just, like, eat fruit lying around the house and just keep going to the studio.
14:03Smart.
14:04Saving up for that van.
14:05Next question.
14:06Alright, this is from Madison.
14:08Do you have any half-written lyrics on your phone?
14:11Yep.
14:14You've given Taylor Swift so many hit songs, what's the best thing she's ever given you?
14:21Well, I haven't given her.
14:23I mean, the whole question's weird.
14:24Yes, it is.
14:24This is a terribly worded question.
14:26Yeah.
14:27Next question.
14:29I don't like the wording.
14:30Uh, let's see.
14:33Um...
14:35What about...
14:36Hold on a second.
14:37We've got time for one more.
14:38Make it a good one.
14:39We've got time for one more here.
14:40What are we running out the clock to?
14:42Hold on.
14:42Oh, what is something that you spend...
14:43Well, then you come out and play.
14:44What is something that you spend too much time thinking about?
14:48I mean, what direction do you want to go?
14:50In, like, funny?
14:50Sad?
14:51Dark.
14:51Dark?
14:52Yeah.
14:54Let's really bring the crowd down before they come out and play for them.
14:59Omelettes?
15:02I'm trying to think if it's gonna...
15:05Famine.
15:07Steel train.
15:08What'd you say?
15:09Quick?
15:10Famine.
15:10That's terrifying.
15:12This has turned into, like, an improv show.
15:14What was the other one?
15:15Steel train?
15:16Someone say steel train?
15:17Do it?
15:17Oh.
15:18Well, I think a lot about...
15:21Okay.
15:22I can twist this hopeful.
15:23It's kind of in the album.
15:25I think a lot about the function of being a human being and the ways in which that are
15:29being stripped from us and trying to redirect into things that make me feel like I have
15:35a purpose.
15:37To me, that's music.
15:38To me, that's community.
15:39That's live music, recording, and focusing on a very small group of people instead of
15:43the whole fucking world.
15:44It's really a large part of what the album is about.
15:47And I think about how much dignity there is in just living and being a good person and
15:53making food and having a family and all that stuff.
15:54And the terror of that being a nice thing to have in your life.
16:01But I'm trying to rail against that.
16:04Do you feel me?
16:04All right.
16:04It's kind of like...
16:05I did depress you.
16:06Fuck.
16:07All right.
16:07I'm going to go.
16:08You finished.
16:09You want me to leave and come back, right?
16:10I'll be back in one second, guys.
16:12Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the great Jack Antonoff.
16:16Bleachers will be up here in moments.
16:18Stick around because that's why you're really here.
16:20And this continues after this.
16:22Who's ready for some live music?
16:27Please make some noise for Bleachers.
16:49I'm fucking back.
16:50I was delivered over!
16:58How you feeling?
17:01Yeah?
17:03How you feeling?
17:08Yooo, aaahhhhhhhh!
17:11Yooo, !!!!
17:33Get in my backseat, honey pie
17:38I've always said it's like it's mine
17:42Cause it's just good
17:45To have what was missing
17:48Yeah, it's bad when it's good
17:50To always be missing
17:53But a girl like you
17:55Read me out of my head
17:59Black tears on your cheek
18:01I want them in my bed
18:04I'll take you out of the city
18:06Honey, right into the shadow
18:09Cause I wanna find tomorrow
18:12Yeah, I wanna find tomorrow
18:14With a girl like you
18:17My Chinatown, baby
18:20Sitting on the front street
18:23Crying out the crazy
18:25I'll take you out of the city
18:28Honey, right into the shadow
18:31Cause I wanna find tomorrow
18:33Yeah, I wanna find tomorrow
18:48Give me, give me, give me, give me
18:50That big red light
18:53Sing it!
18:54Yeah, I'm sick and sad
18:55It's not a Saturday night
18:58Cause honey, you're so good
19:00To have what was missing
19:03We were bad to be bad
19:06But a girl like you
19:11Read me out of my head
19:14Black tears on your cheek
19:17I want them in my bed
19:19I'll take you out of the city
19:22Honey, right into the shadow
19:25Cause I wanna find tomorrow
19:27Yeah, I wanna find tomorrow
19:30With a girl like you
19:33Black China, tell me
19:36Sitting on the front of the street
19:39She's crying out the crazy
19:41I'll take you out of the city
19:43Honey, right into the shadow
19:46Cause I wanna find tomorrow
19:49I wanna find tomorrow
19:52With a girl like you

39:39This song is called You and Forever.
39:41There's only a few times you've gotten to play it.
39:52Third time.
40:03Well, who could catch their breath at a crime scene?
40:07Was born and raised to keep dark findings in my mind.
40:19Ain't numbers blurring, streets are feeling different.
40:23I'm losing track of all of God's indifference.
40:26Who gets by?
40:34Well, walking with a ghost, that shit was tearing me to shreds.
40:38I had never known my name until you spoke it from your chest.
40:42Yes, the heavens opened up and tore me in.
40:45And I stared and said, oh, and there's forever, darling, just here.
40:57And forever.
40:58Well, now it's just here.
41:03And forever now.
41:08Forever now.
41:12Forever now.
41:15Well, now it's just here.
41:42And forever now.
41:45And forever.
41:46They hate themselves.
41:47They hate themselves.
41:47It's forever war.
41:47It pays the hell.
41:49Fuck everything that I've been told.
41:50Cause I just saw it.
41:51The heavens opened up.
41:53And forever.
41:58And forever.
42:00And forever.
42:00And darling, just here.
42:02And forever.
42:06Well, now it's just here.
42:09And forever now.
42:16Forever now
42:20Forever now
42:22Forever now
42:23Forever now
42:32Crying out bad, I was crying out for the Savior
42:36Now Jesus Christ over the gods, the cow dragging them
