00:13Paris is admired worldwide for aesthetic beauty, but the city kept hitting the news for another
00:18reason in recent months as record-breaking highs climb beyond 40c104 feet on the roasting
00:24streets.
00:24As Paris emerges from months of oppressive heat, cooler autumn temperatures are welcome
00:30back like a long-lost friend.
00:32But images of France's hottest summer remain etched in memories and in the artwork of illustrator
00:37Marina Antonova.
00:38I've been thinking about the difficult life of homeless people for a very long time and
00:45I think that just heat waves kind of made it so much worse and I could see how difficult
00:50it was for people and as you rightly said that usually winter is the hardest part for homeless
01:00people and now we have a situation where both winter and summer are horrific.
01:05Antonova has had to keep moving from temporary accommodations since arriving in France four
01:10years ago from Russia.
01:12Although France helped, she was often coping with living under bad conditions with mental
01:17stress and little money.
01:19The acute suffering of the homeless resonated with her and she felt anguish at not being
01:24able to help them more.
01:25And it's just such a contrast, especially in the district where I live, where some people,
01:33not a lot of people actually, but some people do have air conditioner or they work in the
01:37very kind of posh air conditioner offices and there are homeless people sleeping in front
01:44of those offices, windows, people where they have air conditioner and people which have nothing.
01:51And also I think like everyone who has, who lives on the street or do some sort of work
02:00on the street, it's, it was incredibly hard and honestly I cannot even imagine how people
02:08did survive it.
02:09Her drawings show homeless people clinging to their knees, hunched forward in despair or
02:13curled up on pavements in apparent defeat.
02:16A historic fire devoured forests near Bordeaux with legions of people forced from their homes.
02:21Italy, Spain and other European countries experienced extreme temperatures in the world's fastest
02:28warming continent.
02:29France recorded at least 7,200 more deaths than usual during successive heat waves this year,
02:36according to the National Public Health Agency, based on statistical modeling using data from
02:41previous years.
02:42I have an artist friend who, she still lives in Russia and we often exchange works and stuff.
02:48And so when I sent her my new drawings of Paris, she said, oh, thank you, I will never go
02:54to
02:54Paris after this.
02:56And with her we called this series anti-postcards because the kind of postcards after which you
03:03don't want to go to the place.
03:04Because of the heat wave's dramatic effect on everyday life, Paris became a tough place
03:09to walk around in the sunshine.
