00:16Canada could be looking to Europe for its next big economic partnership.
00:21As trade tensions with the United States continue to escalate,
00:25Canadian officials are reportedly discussing a potentially historic move with the European Union.
00:32According to a report by the Wall Street Journal,
00:36Canada and EU officials have been negotiating closer ties,
00:40including the possibility of Canada becoming an associate member of the European Union.
00:46And if that happens, it could mark one of the biggest reorientations of the Canadian economy in decades.
00:54For generations, the United States has been Canada's dominant trading partner.
00:59In 2025, around 72 percent of Canadian exports reportedly went across the southern border.
01:07But now, Ottawa is looking for alternatives.
01:11The reported discussions come after Canada's trade relationship with Washington deteriorated sharply,
01:17with both countries imposing tariffs and trade negotiations breaking down.
01:23President Donald Trump has also repeatedly threatened and mocked Canada as the potential 51st state.
01:30Against that backdrop, Europe is suddenly looking much more important to Ottawa.
01:36The exact terms of any potential arrangement are still being negotiated.
01:41But according to the report,
01:43closer Canada-EU ties could involve major projects in energy, infrastructure and technology.
01:51One possibility is shipping Canadian fertilizer through the Arctic.
01:55Another is building new natural gas pipelines that could help Europe reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
02:02There could also be cooperation on undersea cables, satellites and data centers,
02:08as Canada and European countries become increasingly cautious about relying on American technology companies.
02:16And Mark Carney already has strong connections in Europe.
02:20The Canadian Prime Minister studied at Oxford and served as governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
02:28He also reportedly maintains close contact with European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron.
02:36There are even discussions around making it easier for Canadians to live and work in Europe without visas.
02:44Now, Carney is heading to Europe.
02:46He is scheduled to visit Liverpool and Strasbourg and address the European Parliament.
02:51He is also expected to attend the State of the European Union address and meet European lawmakers to strengthen cooperation
03:00on trade, investment and security.
03:03But there is one major question.
03:06Will Canada actually seek associate EU membership?
03:10For now, that remains unclear.
03:13The EU has historically not been known for flexible membership arrangements of this kind, and no final agreement has been
03:21announced.
03:22So this is not Canada joining the European Union tomorrow.
03:26But the fact that such an arrangement is reportedly being discussed sends a very clear message.
03:32As Canada's relationship with the United States becomes increasingly uncertain, Ottawa may be preparing to look across the Atlantic for
03:42its next major economic and strategic partnership.
