U.S.-Canada trade tensions are escalating as President Donald Trump says he expects Canada to reach a new trade deal with Washington within the next few weeks, even as new import restrictions on certain Canadian goods are set to take effect.

The measures reportedly target products including some alcoholic drinks, dairy byproducts and motorcycles, adding another layer of pressure after recent trade negotiations between the two countries ended without an agreement.

Trump says he believes a deal can still be reached and described his goal as securing a “fair” agreement for the United States. Meanwhile, Canada says its priority is protecting Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses while diversifying its international trade partnerships.

The latest moves could further strain relations between Ottawa and Washington and raise questions about the future of the Canada-U.S. trade relationship.

00:00Countries in the entire world, you know, we get along with China, we get along with the people, and we
00:04make good deals.
00:06But Canada's been really very difficult to deal with, actually.
00:11And they've charged our farmers 400% tariffs and more.
00:14On Canadian trade tomorrow, you're going to have a ban of certain items with Canada into the United States.
00:19Can you still have a trade deal or an agreement with Canada, or could more items be added to that
00:24list?
00:25Well, they want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time.
00:27The problem is that they've treated the United States very unfairly.
00:31They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world.
00:35You know, we get along with China, we get along with the people, and we make good deals.
00:39But Canada's been really very difficult to deal with, actually.
00:44And they've charged our farmers 400% tariffs and more.
00:48And they take advantage of us. They feel entitled.
00:54And, you know, they get 95%. 95% of the business they do, they do with the United States.
01:00With us, it's a tiny fraction of that number. It's not a big number at all.
01:05And yet, you know, we give them military. We give them icebreakers. They want icebreakers.
01:11We work with them. We buy icebreakers. We have a lot of them. We have 11 of them right now
01:16under construction.
01:18They want to know if they can use our icebreakers. So many things.
01:22And they feel entitled. And, you know, they're not a state.
01:26There's nothing they have that we need. We have more energy than they have.
01:30We have all the lumber you could possibly use. We have everything we have we don't need.
01:37And they have to treat our country with respect.
01:39They've been very, very bad to our farmers in particular.
01:42So how do you get another coal?
01:43Would you say that, sir, Peter? Do you want to say something about that?
01:45Aluminum, farming, dairy. It's a crazy trip of digits on the dairy tariffs.
01:51And the problem is, who can't, sir, is the average.
01:55Those tariffs are as high as, like, 400% sometimes.
01:59Peter, go ahead, sir.
02:00Yeah, it's just, I'll go back to the first term, sir, dealing with the Canadians.
02:04They were the most difficult and arrogant of the traders.
02:07It's like the Canadian people are wonderful, but they cheat us on just about everything they can.
02:12Lumber, aluminum, steel, dairy, down the list.
02:17And then the worst part now is they're getting in bed with China, trying to play China against us.
02:23And they're giving away their country.
02:25And they like to beat up on Donald Trump.
02:28I think politically that works.
02:29And the only people who get hurt by that is the people of Canada.
02:33Many, many people are going into Canada right now from other parts of the world, and it's not a good
02:38situation.
02:39They're coming in totally unchecked, totally unvetted.
02:43I don't know what Canada is.
02:44So, Mr. President, how does this end?
02:46How does this end, Mr. President?
02:48I think what's going to happen is, over the next three or four weeks, they're going to come to us,
02:54and they're going to say, we're going to get rid of all the tariffs.
02:58We're going to win everything.
02:59We even have Lake Ontario is now Lake America.
03:05And that's been done, by the way.
03:07It's actually just got done.
03:09They told me it was just completed.
03:11But they're going to come in, and they're going to say, sir, we are sorry.
03:17They've treated the United States very, very badly.
03:21I think a deal will be made, but it's got to be a fair deal.
