00:01:00Ратчет it up.
00:01:03Welcome to USA Sports Pre-Race, presented by Sonic.
00:01:10What a beautiful day we have here in Madison, Illinois.
00:01:14Hi folks, Lee Diffie with you, welcoming to USA Sports, presentation of the Enjoy Illinois 300.
00:01:20This is what the 16 drivers in the Chaser Racing for, the Bill France Cup and the right to be
00:01:25crowned NASCAR Cup Series Champion.
00:01:27But if the Chase Opener last week in Darlington at the Southern 500 taught us anything, is that this thing
00:01:33can change dramatically.
00:01:34And especially today, if we follow the trend of a new winner each and every year out here at Worldwide
00:01:40Technology Raceway, because the points can change substantially, dramatically.
00:01:45There's so much to get through.
00:01:46So let's walk you a little bit back down Pit Road and find our Hall of Famer, Dale Jarrett, Steve
00:01:52LaTarte, and Marty Snyder.
00:01:53Good afternoon, Marty.
00:01:54Good afternoon, Lee, and happy race day, everyone.
00:01:56The USA Sports Pit Box located right in the middle of Pit Road across from the start-finish line.
00:02:01And Lee mentioned it.
00:02:02We saw chaos to kick off the chase.
00:02:04Twelve of the 16 drivers changing position in that one race, DJ.
00:02:09But that was Darlington.
00:02:10Is St. Louis a little underrated for how chaotic this track can be?
00:02:14Yeah, and Lee kind of alluded to it.
00:02:15You know, we don't have a large sample size, only four races.
00:02:18But you talk to every driver, they talk about the difficulty that this track brings.
00:02:23So I think if they're going to have that difficulty today, and I expect that to be the case.
00:02:27And we saw a lot of mistakes by crews and drivers.
00:02:31Pressure is a real thing right here in this chase.
00:02:33Pressure is real, and performance matters.
00:02:36As Diff said, winning matters.
00:02:38We knew that already.
00:02:39Bell with the win vaults up the standings to second.
00:02:41But how about Denny Hamlin?
00:02:42Only 18th in the running order, but top 10 in points scored all because of the stages.
00:02:47He maintains the points lead.
00:02:49You have to ask yourself, with 10 chase drivers starting in the top 10,
00:02:53how busy those first 45 laps in Stage 1 will be.
00:02:57While Christopher Bell kicked off the chase in Victory Lane,
00:03:00all the post-race talk was about Carson Hosovar and Brad Keselowski.
00:03:07This is the thing that everybody gets so frustrated with Carson Hosovar about.
00:03:12I do everything for TV and entertainment purposes, so.
00:03:15We got a flat tire that's got wrecked by the 77th.
00:03:17Hold the break, Brad.
00:03:18Whatever makes this good TV, I just do it for the clicks.
00:03:20You know what I mean?
00:03:21Oh, from the ground, Brad goes.
00:03:23I mean, he just comes up the racetrack and hits him.
00:03:26End of Stage 1, contact with the 6 was TV-worthy as well.
00:03:29Do you know what happened with the 77 earlier?
00:03:31Yeah, he spawned.
00:03:32Oh, yeah, he ran into me.
00:03:33I don't know what happened.
00:03:34He spawned.
00:03:35Is there any history there?
00:03:36Do you have any idea why that would have happened?
00:03:38There will be.
00:03:38There will be?
00:03:39Oh, yeah.
00:03:40Drivers are tired of it.
00:03:41Be honest, in the garage area, everyone is over it.
00:03:43Care to expand upon that at all?
00:03:45This day's coming.
00:03:46It's coming hard.
00:03:46Watch out, Carson.
00:03:47I'll tighten my belts.
00:03:51Well, yesterday, Brad told us he's reflected a bit, and he has some balance now between
00:03:56what he knows he needs to do for his team, but also doesn't want to get taken advantage
00:04:00of, the fire that could spread there.
00:04:02So what actions does that leave you today on track where Carson's concerned?
00:04:07Yeah, I don't know.
00:04:07I have no idea.
00:04:08We'll get out there on the racetrack, Dave, and, you know, the car's fast.
00:04:12We're going to try to take advantage of it and make the most we can of the day.
00:04:14We've got a lot of people working really hard on my team to put the best cars out on the
00:04:18track, and you've got sponsors and all those commitments.
00:04:22And then on the flip side of that, I'm not going to get ran over on the racetrack.
00:04:25So we'll see what opportunities there are to maximize our day, or if not, solve some
00:04:31other problems.
00:04:32Do you have any concern that he's a bit more of a wild card on track than you are?
00:04:36No, he doesn't know me very well if he thinks that.
00:04:39Oh, boy.
00:04:40Now, Dave, we're good.
00:04:41All right, Brad Keselowski is good.
00:04:42We'll see what happens today, Kim.
00:04:45And Brad Keselowski has voiced his displeasure about you, Carson, has put a target on your
00:04:49back.
00:04:50Do you think Brad poses a credible threat to you, either on the racetrack or off the
00:04:55racetrack?
00:04:56I mean, I'm probably getting wrecked at some point, whether it's him or somebody else, whether
00:05:01it's today or next week or a year from now or multiple years from now.
00:05:07So my belts are going to be tight, and we're not going to be a hypocrite about it.
00:05:12We're going to make sure our belts are tight, and we'll just finish the day.
00:05:15Whether it's, you know, we'll see if there's how much damage there is, and we'll roll from
00:05:18there.
00:05:19But ultimately, you know, we race for us, our team, and what's best for us.
00:05:24We race for, you know, the fans.
00:05:26You know, we're not going to listen.
00:05:28And ultimately, whatever happens is not going to change any of us or how I think or how we
00:05:32race.
00:05:33And that's why I think he's going to be looking forward to it.
00:05:35So if they're trying to get a message, we're just going to keep doing us.
00:05:39If you find yourself racing around him, are you going to be careful, or will you flirt a
00:05:43little bit with disaster?
00:05:44Well, based off yesterday, if you get somebody upset, maybe don't run into them again.
00:05:48And, you know, try to riddle them up.
00:05:51All right.
00:05:51That's Carson Hosovari.
00:05:53It should be noted the track's got promotional posters that pit Brad and Carson against each
00:05:57other.
00:05:58Carson signed every single one that a fan showed him leading up to the driver intro stage.
00:06:04Oh, boy.
00:06:04This is not going away anytime soon.
00:06:06Mr. Hall of Famer, your take on what those two had to say?
00:06:09To be quite honest, I'm tired of the talking.
00:06:11They're saying things that don't make any sense most of the time.
00:06:14I don't care about somebody doing something to get clicks.
00:06:17Act like men.
00:06:18Settle this outside the race car.
00:06:20Don't go tearing up more race cars.
00:06:22These guys work hard on these race cars.
00:06:24They cost a lot of money.
00:06:25Settle it.
00:06:25Go to the motorhome lot.
00:06:27Settle it.
00:06:27Talk it out.
00:06:28If it takes more than talking it out, do that.
00:06:30But I'm tired of listening to them.
00:06:31We've seen race car drivers run into each other since NASCAR was created over 70 years
00:06:35ago.
00:06:35This isn't a new story.
00:06:36It's how it's being handled off from the racetrack that I think is the big difference
00:06:39now between social media.
00:06:41And to be quite honest, that youngster right there, Carson Hosovar, he's not backing down.
00:06:45He's not changing regardless of the threats.
00:06:47He basically said right there that even if they wreck me, it won't matter.
00:06:51So you have to ask yourself what kind of firestorm you want to get in on the racetrack.
00:06:55Welcome to live sports.
00:06:56Only time will tell.
00:06:58It's going to be excited to see from the booth.
00:06:59Why do I have a feeling our belter type t-shirt is coming around the corner?
00:07:03He only said it about five times in that interview.
00:07:06So what does a WNBA star do in their time off?
00:07:09They come to a NASCAR race, of course.
00:07:11Long-time NASCAR fan and Missouri native Sophie Cunningham is in the house.
00:07:16She's been hanging out with drivers all morning.
00:07:18Sophie Cunningham joins us next.
00:07:24USA Sports Pre-Race is brought to you by Sonic.
00:07:27The $7 big deal meal.
00:07:30Live free.
00:07:30Eat Sonic.
00:07:33Sophie Cunningham.
00:07:34She is just that flair.
00:07:37Sophie Cunningham, University of Missouri.
00:07:39Sophie Cunningham, her personality.
00:07:40She is a dog.
00:07:41She will mix it up.
00:07:43And on cue, Cunningham pulls and connects.
00:07:45Sophie Cunningham.
00:07:47You like the scoring, but sometimes it's the reactions that are even better.
00:07:51Bum, bum, bum, bum!
00:07:53No fear.
00:07:54All ice in her veins.
00:07:59And we are honored to welcome the pride of Columbia, Missouri.
00:08:02No NASCAR fans.
00:08:03We're not talking about Carl Edwards.
00:08:04We're talking about this young lady, Sophie Cunningham, our USA Sports Athlete contributor.
00:08:09You know, we joke about the Carl Edwards thing, but I think it's important for NASCAR fans
00:08:13to know, Sophie, you grew up in a household full of Carl Edwards fans, didn't you?
00:08:17We did.
00:08:17I brought my dad and my mom and sister.
00:08:19My dad has been dying this whole day.
00:08:21And so we grew up with seeing the backflips every time he won.
00:08:24And so I can't really do backflips, so I'm going to, like, save my neck and my legs and whatnot.
00:08:28But it really has been such a fun sport for us to grow up on.
00:08:30So, Sophie, I watch your games, love the energy that you bring, but I know that the crowd
00:08:36has to bring a lot to that, too.
00:08:37And as basketball players, that has to be very inspiring.
00:08:40Race car drivers, we don't get that.
00:08:42We're inside a loud race car, so we really don't know fan reaction outside of that.
00:08:47We have to wait until it's over.
00:08:48Maybe we won and can hear it.
00:08:50Or the next week at driver introduction, they either cheer or boo us.
00:08:53What's that like for you, especially at Indiana Fever right now?
00:08:56Absolutely.
00:08:57You know, I am very much an energy player.
00:08:59I know my role, and I own that role.
00:09:01And I'm someone who gets the crowd into it.
00:09:03I think that's super important.
00:09:04It's a good sixth man to have on your side, especially when good opponents come into your gym.
00:09:08And so I think it's great.
00:09:09You know, I think the fans are amazing.
00:09:10I know you guys don't get to hear the NASCAR fans.
00:09:12But honestly, I think I fit more into the NASCAR fans than the basketball fans.
00:09:16So I'm truly happy to be here and be a fan of all these guys racing today.
00:09:20Well, take me through your day.
00:09:21I mean, I've been spoiled for 30 years.
00:09:23I've called this garage area, this spectacle home.
00:09:25I think I've become maybe accustomed to what race day feels like.
00:09:28You've been everywhere.
00:09:29What has the day been like?
00:09:30You guys, you are salt of the earth people, truly.
00:09:33You guys are an amazing group of men.
00:09:35And I got to hang out with Ryan.
00:09:38I got to hang out with Chase, Carson.
00:09:40Austin was absolutely amazing.
00:09:42And so it's been really cool to, you know, talk to him about racing cars and whatnot,
00:09:46but also just getting to know him outside of the track.
00:09:48And you guys truly are amazing.
00:09:50I've had a heck of a day, and it's been a lot of fun.
00:09:51I want to go back to that kick, Sophie.
00:09:53It was horrible.
00:09:54Oh, my gosh.
00:09:55Well, come on.
00:09:55You actually were the kicker for your high school team your senior year.
00:09:59Is that correct?
00:09:59Yeah.
00:10:00You know, I will redeem myself a little bit.
00:10:01I did hit a 45-yarder.
00:10:03I haven't done that in a while.
00:10:05I almost killed someone if that mic wasn't right there.
00:10:06In a game, you hit a 45-yarder.
00:10:08I did, yeah.
00:10:08So, like, I used to have a leg, but now I guess I should stick to basketball.
00:10:11I thought the forum was excellent.
00:10:12No, thank you.
00:10:13Thank you.
00:10:13Thank you.
00:10:14I almost killed someone.
00:10:15My gosh.
00:10:15What is it like to meet drivers, though?
00:10:17And when you meet other professional athletes, what are you gleaning from them?
00:10:21Because you mentioned you hung out with Chase Elliott.
00:10:23You got to meet Austin Dillon.
00:10:24You got to meet Denny Hamlin, some of the greats of the sport.
00:10:27So tell me, like, what do you get from other athletes when you do talk to them?
00:10:31Honestly, really just get to understand that they're just people, right?
00:10:33They're just very excellent at their craft, and it takes a lot of time and sacrifice.
00:10:37And, you know, I get to talk to them about their training.
00:10:39Do they bring their families on the road with them?
00:10:41Because this is a hard sport, and I think when you become elite, it does get lonely at
00:10:44times.
00:10:45But you guys get to bring your families along, and I think that's just absolutely excellent.
00:10:48But, you know, it's been fun to see, you know, they're – I asked, does anyone do F1?
00:10:52What other things do you guys do?
00:10:53And they're like, absolutely not, but we respect them, but NASCAR's our thing.
00:10:56So you've been on a little bit of a break here.
00:10:58Yeah.
00:10:58Had a few weeks off, but you're getting ready to go back to work.
00:11:00I think Friday's your next game.
00:11:02How's the rest of the season looking?
00:11:04I know the playoffs are looming.
00:11:05Yeah, you know, we actually kind of have the same season, so that's why we really don't
00:11:08get to see each other much.
00:11:09But we have four more regular season games, and then it's playoffs.
00:11:12And so we have had a two-week break, but honestly, our coach has made us practice every single
00:11:16day.
00:11:16So if I'm looking muscular and skinny, say less.
00:11:20But no, we – I think we're going to have a good playoff run, but we just have to get
00:11:23consistent and, you know, have a little bit of fun.
00:11:24Enjoy where we're at.
00:11:25I met your family earlier.
00:11:26They were a blast.
00:11:27How much fun is it for this ride to be able to bring your mom and dad, your sister to
00:11:31all these
00:11:32different events?
00:11:32I think they were having more fans than perhaps all of us.
00:11:35They're huge fans.
00:11:35They are.
00:11:36They truly are.
00:11:36And, you know, I'm very blessed with the platform I've been given, but I really think
00:11:41it's important to bring your people along with you who allowed you to get to where you're
00:11:43at.
00:11:44Like I said, my dad has been a huge NASCAR fan, and so he has been – when he met
00:11:48you
00:11:48guys, he was like starstruck.
00:11:49And our dad doesn't get starstruck.
00:11:51He's met some pretty cool people.
00:11:52But when he met you guys, Lindsey and I, my sister, were like, wow, he actually got starstruck
00:11:56for me.
00:11:56Yeah.
00:11:56Do you have a pick today?
00:11:57I didn't want to put you on the spot.
00:11:58Did any driver – I saw there was a bourbon given?
00:12:00Hey, I was just about to go there.
00:12:02I think they know their crowd.
00:12:03When Brian gave me his bourbon, I was pretty good.
00:12:05I'm not going to lie to you.
00:12:06So I think I have to be a fan favorite of him today.
00:12:08All right.
00:12:08I think the cool part is, Sophie, you're going to hang out for the day.
00:12:11Like you're going to kind of – what do you want to take in here watching the first
00:12:14part of this race?
00:12:15You know what?
00:12:15I always think it's so fascinating.
00:12:17You know that these cars go fast.
00:12:18But once you're up close and personal to it, it's just amazing.
00:12:20And honestly, I have a big appreciation for the pit crew.
00:12:23I found out a lot of them are ex-athletes, and I get it.
00:12:25You have to have agility.
00:12:26You have to be strong.
00:12:27You have to be on your P's and Q's.
00:12:28And so I just think the more that I get to know this sport, I just have so much more
00:12:31respect for it, for the people in it.
00:12:33And so, I don't know.
00:12:34I'm just – I like to see the behind the scenes a little bit more than, you know,
00:12:37the drivers who are always front and center.
00:12:38More to come from Sophie Cunningham later today.
00:12:41She'll be up here on the USA Sports Pit Box, kind of giving us her take on the first part
00:12:45of this race.
00:12:46Sophie, great to have you at the racetrack so far this weekend.
00:12:48Thank you, guys.
00:12:48I appreciate it.
00:12:49Enjoy the start of the race here.
00:12:50So, other than great racing, what is this track known for?
00:12:54Pyro.
00:12:55The infamous Fireball Show is back and bigger than ever, and this year it's led by Dave
00:13:00Burns.
00:13:01It's all true.
00:13:02Dave discovers Pyro next.
00:13:08You're watching the USA Sports Pre-Race Show, presented by Sonic.
00:13:16USA Sports Pre-Race is brought to you by Sonic.
00:13:19The $7 big deal meal.
00:13:21Live free.
00:13:23Eat Sonic.
00:13:24Here's what's on the menu presented by Sonic.
00:13:26Josh Berry was named this week as the driver for the 42-car Legacy Motor Club starting in
00:13:312027.
00:13:32No question, his recent performance with six straight top tens earned him the seat.
00:13:38Bristol is bringing out the stars next Saturday night.
00:13:41Brad Pitt will be the Grand Marshal in Thunder Valley.
00:13:44While Tennessee native and IndyCar champ, two-time Indy 500 winner as well, Joseph Newgarden will
00:13:50drive the pace car.
00:13:51And Joey Logano is on the pole for today's race, his second of the year.
00:13:55The gap from Logano's pole time to Kyle Larson in second is the largest in the Cup Series
00:14:01in nine years.
00:14:05That is a Worldwide Technology Raceway signature.
00:14:10Holy...
00:14:10Man, I felt that up here.
00:14:12And it usually takes people by surprise.
00:14:15This explodes.
00:14:16You feel the heat.
00:14:17We all felt the heat on the spotter stand, Elroy.
00:14:20I think the first year, I didn't get a heads up.
00:14:23I forgot they did that.
00:14:25It's just a shock because you don't know what it is.
00:14:29That's no joke.
00:14:30Like, the booth literally shook when those things erupted.
00:14:33I'm not sure whose idea that was.
00:14:34It's kind of cool, but at the same time, like, oh, the world isn't actually ending.
00:14:37They just do this because that's their thing.
00:14:39But the first time, I got a little scared, actually, because I wasn't expecting it.
00:14:44Ha, ha, ha.
00:14:49Ah, and you thought only Josevar and Keselowski were bringing the fireworks this weekend to
00:14:54St. Louis, but that's not true.
00:14:56J&M displays from Iowa, they have once again brought the Wall of Fire.
00:15:01And you can see the Cup Series drivers are very impressed with what it does.
00:15:05I am as well.
00:15:06I'm located near the Wall of Fire, just off the backstretch.
00:15:09And that is 1,600 feet of mortars that run almost the entire length of the backstretch.
00:15:155, 6, 7, 8, 10-inch mortars that burn about 150 gallons of fuel when ignited.
00:15:21And the temperature will reach 2,200 degrees.
00:15:25Very, very impressive.
00:15:261,000 feet away, the folks in the stands, yeah, they'll feel that percussion, and they will
00:15:30feel the heat as well.
00:15:32And what will I do?
00:15:33Well, your humble discoverer, I will be setting it off.
00:15:37Yes, that's right.
00:15:38We will be almost on top of the Wall of Fire using the RFK SPR-776 to hit the button
00:15:45and
00:15:46send the firewall into orbit.
00:15:48If that doesn't work, we'll use the Cobra Command Center because that is hot right now.
00:15:51I cannot touch that.
00:15:52No rehearsal here.
00:15:53But I will tell you, it's the loudest and the most fiery they've ever had here by at least
00:15:5910%.
00:16:00If you can go bigger, why not?
00:16:02So, Marty, come back in a few minutes where I will see if what I've trained for my entire
00:16:06life, I think, really goes off the way I think it should or if I'll need some assistance.
00:16:12No, I don't think that's going to get it done.
00:16:15What could go wrong, Dave, right?
00:16:16You're going to set off the pyro today.
00:16:19Time for today's Driving Factors presented by DraftKings.
00:16:22With DraftKings, you can take your game anywhere.
00:16:24DJ, let's take a look at Joey Logano.
00:16:27Yeah, I'm telling you, everybody's talking about Joey Logano and everything that he's
00:16:30been able to accomplish at this racetrack.
00:16:32As you pointed out, sitting on the pole by a large margin.
00:16:35But he's also the only driver to finish in the top five in the four races previously
00:16:40here.
00:16:41So he has to be looked at as the favorite here this afternoon.
00:16:44DraftKings is now live in all 50 states.
00:16:46New DraftKings customers can spend $5 and get $200 in total bonuses.
00:16:51Download the DraftKings app and use the promo code CAR when you sign.
00:16:54Hey, DJ, while we're on the subject of Joey Logano, there's 72 points out.
00:16:59But I love what Logano said earlier this week to the media.
00:17:02He said there are must-wins and there are must-do-good races.
00:17:06We're in the must-do-good category this weekend.
00:17:08You agree with that assessment?
00:17:09I agree 100%.
00:17:10Certainly, they would like to have a day to where they win both stages and win the
00:17:14race, get max points.
00:17:15That would be the ultimate for them.
00:17:17But, yes, he has to do well here today.
00:17:19And that would mean somewhere 55 to 60 points to get that done, keep him in the battle.
00:17:23And you know what that team does so well, the 22, is they are able to capitalize when
00:17:28they do have the best car.
00:17:30Denny Hamlin, a little chat with Carson Hosovar on the grid.
00:17:33It's time for today's pre-race ceremonies from St. Louis in front of a sold-out crowd.
00:17:42Race fans, please rise as you are able.
00:17:45Remove your hats and veterans render a hand salute as the United States Transportation
00:17:49Commandoid Color Guard team presents Our Nation's Colors.
00:17:55Here to offer today's invocation, please welcome from the Crossing Church, St. Louis,
00:17:59Pastor Dave McNeil.
00:18:02As we quiet ourselves for prayer, please join me in a moment of silence as we remember the
00:18:07events of September 11th, honoring those lives lost, families who still mourn, and the
00:18:13heroes who took action.
00:18:19Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of freedom we experience in this country every day.
00:18:23Watch over our military, first responders, and their families.
00:18:27Be with every driver and give them focus and safety.
00:18:30Guide the crews and teams, give them wisdom in their strategy.
00:18:33We are grateful and ask that you bless all who made this event possible.
00:18:38Above all, remind us of the hope we can find through your son, his love, sacrifice, and
00:18:43gift of eternal life to all who believe.
00:18:45I pray all these things in the name of Jesus, and all who agree, say...
00:18:49Amen.
00:18:52Here to perform our national anthem, please welcome singer, songwriter, and performer of
00:18:56the St. Louis Muni Theater, Ms. Savvy Jackson.
00:19:00Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last
00:19:26gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts
00:19:48we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
00:19:58And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that a
00:20:18flag was still there.
00:20:24Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free?
00:20:44Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free?
00:20:49And the home of the brave?
00:21:03The road to championship Sunday in Miami is ready for the next chapter to be written.
00:21:08We'll get the engines fired for chase race number two next here on USA Sports.
00:21:19Around here, we learn pretty early.
00:21:21Nothing comes easy.
00:21:23I grew up in Columbia, Missouri, stayed home to play for Mizzou,
00:21:27and learned that when things get physical, she will mix it up.
00:21:30You have to show up when it matters.
00:21:31That mentality took me all the way to the WNBA.
00:21:35The Tiger legend Sophie Cunningham is daring it up.
00:21:38No fear, all ice in her veins.
00:21:41And trust me, it'll play just fine here with the machines.
00:21:46Because here in St. Louis, Gateway to the West, you're fighting for every inch.
00:21:52Two lanes become one, Patience disappears,
00:21:57and nobody's giving you anything.
00:22:00With the chase already underway, every position, every decision means a little more.
00:22:08You're rolling, boys.
00:22:09Let's see what you're doing today, baby.
00:22:10Sounds like fun.
00:22:11This is home.
00:22:12And believe me, there's nothing better than showing out in your backyard.
00:22:17You can either get on the bandwagon or you can get run over by it.
00:22:21Bring them.
00:22:22Bring them all.
00:22:25Fantastic to have our USA Sports athlete contributor, Sophie Cunningham, at the track today at her hometown race.
00:22:32More to come from Sophie later in the race.
00:22:35DJ, it was a rough Darlington for Chase Elliott, but you talked to him yesterday.
00:22:39How would you describe his mood?
00:22:40Very upbeat.
00:22:41He talked about finishing third here last year.
00:22:43He enjoys the challenge of this race.
00:22:45He qualified eighth.
00:22:46He really feels like this is the day that they need to show up and get the most points they
00:22:51possibly can.
00:22:52His teammate is on the pole, but watching practice, did you feel like Ryan Blaney had one of the best
00:22:57cars?
00:22:58Yeah, there's no doubt.
00:22:58He's going to be a factor in this today.
00:23:01His job and his mindset is that they get as many stage points and then go after a win or
00:23:06top five finish to maximize that
00:23:07and then have a good week at Bristol next week.
00:23:09What do you think on this?
00:23:10Coming off the fifth at Darlington, could you see Kyle Larson's winless streak coming to an end soon?
00:23:15Yeah, I think soon.
00:23:17Maybe not here today.
00:23:18This hasn't been their type of track.
00:23:20Hot, slick, flat racetrack.
00:23:21It hasn't been it this year.
00:23:23Normally it has been.
00:23:24I think they're looking ahead to next year, next week, where they can dominate at Bristol.
00:23:28So good at Bristol over the years.
00:23:29Has Kyle Larson been?
00:23:31Certainly going to be a place where you expect them to contend for the win.
00:23:34Let's get the engines fired here in St. Louis for Chase Race number two.
00:23:43Worldwide Technology Raceway, race fans, are you ready?
00:23:51It's time for those most famous words in motorsports.
00:23:55Please welcome former St. Louis Cardinals manager and baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa,
00:24:00joined by the most highly decorated living Air Force pilot and the original Maverick,
00:24:04United States Navy retired Captain Jim DiMatteo, to give the command.
00:24:09Drivers, no guts, no glory.
00:24:13Drivers, start your engines.
00:24:25When we come back, one of the best firework shows you'll ever see,
00:24:29and we're not just talking about the racing.
00:24:31Dave is at the ready to light some pyro, and we're ready for the green flag.
00:24:36Let's go chase racing in St. Louis next.
00:24:39Good luck, Dave.
00:24:55Good luck, Dave.
00:24:56Good luck, Dave.
00:24:57Good luck, Dave.
00:24:57Head up back and the strong gets stronger.
00:25:04Say you got the flu, but we know it's just a hunger.
00:25:10When it comes back around, you're gonna get what's coming.
00:25:15Oh, my God.
00:25:15You're gonna eat the hot feet, that one?
00:25:16We're gonna try to.
00:25:18You guys are doing it right.
00:25:19I love it up here.
00:25:20Rocky!
00:25:21I love you, man.
00:25:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:24Between the half and half, not so holy.
00:25:27Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:32When it comes back around, you're gonna get what's coming.
00:25:36Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:49We come from one of the most historic tracks on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule to one that's
00:25:56in its infancy and still building its history, but with each and every visit, it is so exciting.
00:26:02As we welcome you to USA Sports coverage of the NASCAR Cup Series presented by Golden Corral from Worldwide Technology
00:26:10Raceway.
00:26:12Just across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis, we're here in Madison, Illinois.
00:26:17And as the cars are already rolling, why don't we dial up the man who sits on the pole position.
00:26:22Here's Joey Logano without Jeff Burton.
00:26:24Jeff, hit him up.
00:26:25Hey, Joey, USA Sports Group.
00:26:27You got us?
00:26:28Got you, out of clear.
00:26:29You destroyed everyone in qualifying yesterday.
00:26:32Can you bring that speed to the race today?
00:26:35I hope so.
00:26:36We got a really fast show up into a Mustang.
00:26:38Car was honestly good at qualifying.
00:26:40I think it's pretty good at practice, too, in the long haul.
00:26:43And being able to move around the racetrack pretty decent as well.
00:26:45So, big day for us.
00:26:48Got a big opportunity in front of us to score a lot of points.
00:26:50It's necessary where we're at.
00:26:52So, we're trying to make the most of it.
00:26:54What do you view as the biggest challenge of this racetrack?
00:27:00Well, all of it depends on what point you want to talk about.
00:27:02But I'm staring at turn one right now.
00:27:04And it's probably one of the most challenging parts of the track.
00:27:07Just being in the brakes as hard as you are.
00:27:10And how slick it can be.
00:27:11And trying to figure out what lane you want to end up.
00:27:13That's one of the trickiest part.
00:27:15That is the strategy itself.
00:27:16There's a lot of opportunity here with that, too.
00:27:19Thanks for taking time with the fans.
00:27:20Have a good day.
00:27:21Thank you.
00:27:22Fabulous to hear from Joey Logano.
00:27:24That's what the poll sitter says.
00:27:25What does pit road say?
00:27:27Let's find out.
00:27:27We kick things off with Dave Burns.
00:27:28Dave?
00:27:29So, Lee, fourth in the chase.
00:27:31Tyler Reddick will start on the outside of row nine.
00:27:34His crew chief, Billy Scott, told me.
00:27:36In qualifying, a long pedal into turn one started as a series of events
00:27:39that the driver couldn't recover from.
00:27:41And they will go from 18th.
00:27:43But he said, I like the pit stall we got to choose.
00:27:45It's a good one.
00:27:46And all options are open for strategy today.
00:27:49We'll take the significant points that are left on the table for us
00:27:52and see where we can progress by the afternoon's end.
00:27:54Thank you, Kim.
00:27:55Well, Dave, Christopher Bell, fresh off his Southern 500 win.
00:27:57A victory that propelled him into the second spot in the standings.
00:28:01Just 12 points behind leader Denny Hamlin.
00:28:03Crew chief Adam Stevens saying it was a huge move points-wise.
00:28:07But to remember that it's just one race.
00:28:09The chase is about the body of work you put together over 10 races.
00:28:12He and his driver both love this format.
00:28:15Most teams agree that you have to win a race to stay in the title fight.
00:28:18So I asked Adam if one win will be enough.
00:28:21Would last week be enough?
00:28:22And he told me no.
00:28:23He thinks the inevitable champion is going to have to win at least three races over the course of the
00:28:29chase.
00:28:29And today, Marty, could very well be their next win.
00:28:32Kim, people might look at Denny Hamlin's record here at St. Louis with the two second place finishes
00:28:37and the win in that race last year in the last three races here and think, oh, they'll be great
00:28:42here.
00:28:42But Hamlin told me earlier this week, I don't think we've been as good as the results show at St.
00:28:47Louis.
00:28:47We've caught some nice breaks and we've executed very well.
00:28:50So when I started unpacking what I needed to learn this week, there was a lot more there than I
00:28:55thought.
00:28:55In practice, Hamlin was just OK, according to crew chief Chris Gale.
00:28:59So maybe a more pivotal race for the championship leader than folks might think.
00:29:04Denny Hamlin starts 10th today.
00:29:06And in a certain way, he has felt the walls closing in on him after just one race of this
00:29:1210 race chase format.
00:29:14Hi, folks. Lee Diffie along with the mayor, Jeff Burton, Steve LaTarte.
00:29:17We're ready to go.
00:29:17Stevie, let's talk about that because there was the anticipation factor of what does this new revised format of the
00:29:23chase look like?
00:29:24We got a taste to it last week and a lot of people are saying they enjoy it already.
00:29:27They enjoy it because of what Kim said. It's the totality of 10 weeks.
00:29:30There's no free laps, no free stages and no free races.
00:29:33If you're going to be the champion in 10 weeks, you're going to have to have performed in all of
00:29:37them.
00:29:37And I know Christopher Bell proved that winning matters is a huge points bonus.
00:29:41But Hamlin proved last week that stages matter.
00:29:44Jeff, only 45 laps stage one. The top 10 are all chasers. Points will be paid.
00:29:48I think the urgency is high on a track we've only seen now for the fifth time.
00:29:52Yeah. And you talk about the racetrack. This is a big challenge is a very unique racetrack.
00:29:56It may look like Darlington from above, but there's nothing like Darlington at all.
00:30:00It is not as much grip. Look at this. It's that really odd shape.
00:30:03One of the racetrack is a very tight radius. Turn one. You heard Joey Logano just talk about how tight
00:30:08that is.
00:30:09And that creates incredible restarts. You're going to have to be aggressive.
00:30:13You see three wide, four wide. Try to get position. Once you get that track position, it's very hard to
00:30:19give it back.
00:30:19So you're going to see very aggressive restarts all day.
00:30:22And you hear the drivers and crew chiefs continually say, look, we're still building our notebook on this place.
00:30:29Because to Steve's point, just four years of history. This is year number five.
00:30:34All right. Let's show you today's starting grid brought to you by Golden Corral.
00:30:38And as Jeff mentioned earlier, it was a stunning lap to win the poll for Joey Logano.
00:30:43Where you talk about hundreds and thousands of a second. He stomped them at one point by nearly half a
00:30:48second.
00:30:48And then a few guys caught him. Karl Larson starts on that front row.
00:30:52Last week's winner, Christopher Bell, is on the second row. Row three, Carson Josevar.
00:30:57He made his cup debut here three years ago. Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott, row four.
00:31:02And on the fifth row, Denny Hamlin, who has had a really good track record in three of the four
00:31:07years here, Jeff.
00:31:08Row six, Alex Bowman, Zane Smith. Row seven, Austin Sendrick won here in 24.
00:31:13Ryan Preece, top ten in the last three races. Row eight, Daniel Soares.
00:31:17Wasn't happy with his car yesterday, but feels like they've made it better.
00:31:21Row nine, Tyler Reddick, five-time winner this year.
00:31:24But none since April, trying to get some momentum back. Row 10, Trackhouse drivers.
00:31:29Yeah, looking further back in row in Levin, Chase driver Chris Buescher.
00:31:34Problems last week. He's now 11th at points, 88 points back.
00:31:37Back in row 12, Brad Kozlowski and William Byron, who's the worst of the Chase drivers in the qualifying order
00:31:43after a tough start at Darlington. Row 13, Eric Jones and Cole Custer.
00:31:4714, we see Austin Hill and John Hunter Nemechek, who has to go to the rear because of some changes
00:31:51to his car.
00:31:53McDowell and Cody Ware make up the rest of that road.
00:31:55You see Gregson, Dylan, Herbst, Van Gisbergen, and Stenhouse Jr.
00:32:00Can we give a special shout out to Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Today is 500. Cup start 500 in his career.
00:32:08Jeff, what an accomplishment.
00:32:09Yeah, it's a lot of hard racing, and that guy has done an incredible job in his career.
00:32:13You see him, he puts every bit of effort into it every week, and it's hard to do that over
00:32:17an extended period of time.
00:32:19It is a warm day here at Worldwide Technology Raceway.
00:32:24That's going to be extra challenging for the drivers, but they certainly got a good warm-up, pardon the pun,
00:32:29last weekend in Darlington in what was a stunning Southern 500 starting in the afternoon, racing into the night.
00:32:36And it gave us all something to talk about all week long, not only with Christopher Bell's victory,
00:32:41but that confrontation and the ongoing discussion between Brad Keselowski and Carson Josevar,
00:32:47that's just one of the things we will keep an eye out for today.
00:32:55Is it a must win for Joey Logano? We will see.
00:32:58He and his crew chief, Paul Wolfe, have said it has to be a big point scoring day.
00:33:05Well, he started in the best possible fashion.
00:33:08Now, as you know from over the years, not only with the NASCAR Cup Series,
00:33:13but the IndyCar Series and everything else that races here,
00:33:15the pyrotechnic display is an iconic feature each and every year at Worldwide Technology Raceway.
00:33:22Dave Burns, that's your cue.
00:33:25Lee, they said it was going to be bigger and louder and better than ever.
00:33:28And I should say, once the countdown starts,
00:33:31this will be supported by an earlier report from the 5-inch Salutes and the Star Blaster.
00:33:37It will be at that point, which I will be glad I have glasses affixed,
00:33:41because I'm going to want to see what happens here.
00:33:43We're waiting for the countdown.
00:33:45And when we hit five, the first one will go down.
00:33:48The countdown has started.
00:33:50And when we hit zero, of course, that'll be my cue to go.
00:33:53So wait for the 5-inch Salutes and the Star Blaster.
00:33:57They go up in support.
00:33:58The button is ready to go.
00:34:00I am standing by.
00:34:02And here it comes.
00:34:07And there it goes.
00:34:09Holy cow!
00:34:12That was amazing.
00:34:14Unbelievable.
00:34:15And hot.
00:34:17We're atop the grandstand and this booth shook.
00:34:21It literally shook the booth.
00:34:25I just like to be on that truck stop across the street.
00:34:34It's probably a good thing with that increase by 10% that the cows went there.
00:34:45It is impressive.
00:34:46It's hard to imagine.
00:34:47We're inside and we can feel the heat.
00:34:49It is pretty impressive.
00:34:59So a worldwide technology raceway tradition continues.
00:35:03And we get ready to go racing the Toyota Camry XSE pace car out in front.
00:35:11Ready to peel off and get this started 240 laps.
00:35:19For this Enjoy Illinois 300.
00:35:24One of the championship contenders is a champion already.
00:35:27That's Ryan Blaney.
00:35:28Let's go in and have an eavesdrop.
00:35:29Pre-race.
00:35:31Fight all day.
00:35:31Do the best we can.
00:35:33Let you know what I need.
00:35:34Keep everything going.
00:35:37Race 2 at 10.
00:35:38Still got a long way to go.
00:35:39Going to perform every week.
00:35:40So you boys get luck down there.
00:35:42Be safe.
00:35:42I did the best job I can for you on the road.
00:35:43I know tonight.
00:35:44The best job I can for you.
00:35:46Steve, how important are those pep talks?
00:35:48Well, I think, you know, the driver has so much going on Sunday morning.
00:35:52It's great when he's finally in his office that he kind of just circles the troops.
00:35:55The crew chief has to lead the team day in and day out.
00:35:57But the driver is the real leader.
00:35:58And when you can hear his support, I think it energizes everybody.
00:36:01It sets the task at hand right in front of what's needed.
00:36:09The chase is well and truly underway.
00:36:12We've already had an interesting week one.
00:36:14Welcome to week two here at Worldwide Technology Raceway.
00:36:18Time to go racing and to continue the chase for the NASCAR Cup championship.
00:36:23Great start, Joey Logano.
00:36:35That's the start he was looking for.
00:36:37Here comes Josevar.
00:36:38Quick to dive to the inside and pressuring for that fourth spot.
00:36:41Make it third.
00:36:48Larson and Josevar side by side, Blaney in behind, then chase Briscoe.
00:36:52You can already see how many lines you can run at this racetrack.
00:36:56In practice yesterday, drivers were shocked that they could run from the white line up to the wall.
00:37:01Three wide into one.
00:37:02Daniel Suarez on the inside of Berry.
00:37:07What a move by Reddick.
00:37:10That was Ryan Preece.
00:37:12Kind of seemed off the pace just a little bit as he got swamped into turn one.
00:37:21Toyota on board with Denny Hamlin.
00:37:22Let's go for a ride.
00:37:37Aggressive move right here.
00:37:38The 11 car is going backwards.
00:37:40He's lost four spots since the green flag dropped.
00:37:45Well, the Toyotas did not seem amazing in practice, but when we talked to most of them,
00:37:49they thought it was their timing on racetrack.
00:37:51They kind of waited a little bit.
00:37:52They didn't go out right away.
00:37:53I was interested to see how they would run here today.
00:37:56It's still very early, but definitely not an aggressive start for the 11 going the wrong direction.
00:38:02Oh!
00:38:03Contact!
00:38:08Was that Reddick that hit the wall?
00:38:10I think it was Reddick.
00:38:11Heavy damage to the right side.
00:38:13The Goodyear is missing.
00:38:14I think that's the 45 that I saw.
00:38:16Daniel Suarez.
00:38:18Really hard contact.
00:38:19Really hard contact.
00:38:20Wheels off.
00:38:21Speaking of the steering wheel, the tape is not vertical like it needed to be.
00:38:24Let's take a look, Jeff.
00:38:25We saw a lot of action.
00:38:26I saw Reddick making the outside work.
00:38:28Early on the start of this race.
00:38:31And right here, it gets up the racetrack.
00:38:34The 7, they got loose.
00:38:36The 7 of Suarez got loose and he chases it up the racetrack.
00:38:40Seems sliding behind the 21.
00:38:43And there's the 45 and they made contact.
00:38:48Oh, that is so frustrating on lap three.
00:38:52You hear him out of the gas.
00:38:54Yep.
00:38:54Trying to save his car.
00:38:55Here's the view for Reddick.
00:38:56Have a listen.
00:39:00He just had no thought whatsoever that Suarez was going to come up the racetrack.
00:39:04He saw that clear hole with the 21 there.
00:39:07He knew there was room for him to be there.
00:39:10And Suarez just lost his car.
00:39:11He's the 88 of Connor Zilich for track house racing in his first Cup Series race.
00:39:15And around at the back.
00:39:16That may have been Austin Hill.
00:39:18No.
00:39:18It's Riley Herbst in the 35 for 23-11.
00:39:22Off turn four.
00:39:24Spins around.
00:39:25Get it caught up as best as you can.
00:39:28Bring it to me.
00:39:28We'll put it right sides on him.
00:39:30This will be a huge break for Tyler Reddick.
00:39:32He can now bring his car to the service of his crew to check the damage on that car.
00:39:36Bad news for 23-11.
00:39:38Two of their cars with damage early.
00:39:40Herbst the teammate to Reddick.
00:39:41Herbst really struggled in practice yesterday.
00:39:43Did not qualify well.
00:39:44Was not good in practice.
00:39:54That's big damage on this car.
00:39:57Yeah, you see damage to the nose and the quarter panel.
00:39:59Let's try to see what happens.
00:40:00Top of your screen.
00:40:02Underneath.
00:40:03Oh, he's just loose.
00:40:04I can't tell from this angle if there's contact with the car behind or if he's just loose.
00:40:13Pretend that Ty Dillon would have been the car trailing Riley Herbst, but impossible to know.
00:40:18For sure, just corner exit.
00:40:21Spins out.
00:40:22Contact with the inside wall.
00:40:25Here it is again.
00:40:25Look to the top of your screen.
00:40:26The red and white car.
00:40:28Yeah, I think that's...
00:40:31I'm pretty sure that's Stenhouse right behind him.
00:40:35You might be right.
00:40:35I might have said it was Ty Dillon too soon.
00:40:37It was hard to tell from that angle.
00:40:42I think you're right, Jeff.
00:40:43I think it was Stenhouse behind him.
00:40:46Not Ty Dillon.
00:40:52What an eventful two laps for 23-11.
00:40:55Yeah.
00:40:56We'll see what the 45 does.
00:40:58You know, currently...
00:41:0219th.
00:41:03So with a short first stage,
00:41:05you would think if they feel like they have heavy damage,
00:41:07you'll have to come in and look at that car.
00:41:11Yeah.
00:41:16Oh!
00:41:18Oh!
00:41:19Oh!
00:41:23Oh!
00:41:29Oh!
00:41:30Oh!
00:41:31Oh!
00:41:32Oh!
00:41:33Oh!
00:41:35Oh!
