00:00:00The second half for L.A. and the offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel.
00:00:05Well, there's the three possessions they had in the entire first half.
00:00:08In total, all of about 11 minutes.
00:00:11We talked about this offensive line.
00:00:13Hampton, the job that he's doing running, he had the fumble in the first half.
00:00:17They've got to get some production out of this opening drive.
00:00:25He moved forward.
00:00:31Johnston.
00:00:38Prior to the false start, Los Angeles called its first timeout of the half.
00:00:44That was quick.
00:00:45Yeah.
00:00:46This will be a 30-second timeout.
00:00:47Very quick.
00:00:49Chargers have it.
00:00:50Let's take you to New York, and here's Adam Schein.
00:00:52Kevin Trent.
00:00:54Nice little afternoon so far for the LaFord brothers.
00:00:57How about this?
00:00:57Jordan Love.
00:00:58Christian Watson.
00:01:00Watson, 131 receiving yards, two touchdown catches in the first half.
00:01:0519-10 Packers.
00:01:07Back to you.
00:01:09He's healthy and a huge part of that Packer offense.
00:01:12Well, and, you know, from what we understand, Kyler Murray may have gotten hurt in that game,
00:01:17so some adjustments at Minnesota right away in this opening game.
00:01:21Yep, has a concussion.
00:01:23He's out, and, of course, Kyler Murray, the Cardinal quarterback for a while here there on the pistol, and a
00:01:29handoff, and it is Hampton.
00:01:32Up the middle he goes.
00:01:34Slaughter was leading the way, and Lopez makes the stop, and he bulges his run past the 42, picks up
00:01:43six.
00:01:44It's second down and four.
00:01:46Well, and I think we're going to try and see, or at least what they want to do offensively here
00:01:50is, yeah, you want to take a big strike if you can get it.
00:01:52You know Herbert has the arm to be able to do that, but they also need to sustain drive.
00:01:56They need time of possession.
00:01:57They need to control the football so far in this half, coming out and getting a couple of nice runs
00:02:01and moving the football.
00:02:03And Alt jumps right away on that one.
00:02:06Ball starts.
00:02:07Offense number 76.
00:02:09Five-yard penalty.
00:02:10Second down.
00:02:11And, Kevin, I'm actually a little surprised we haven't seen more of that because this is such a timing-based
00:02:16offense
00:02:16with the amount of shifts, movements, motions, and the timing of those cadences.
00:02:21It's actually kind of surprised I haven't seen more.
00:02:26And we know the veterans have not played that much.
00:02:28Starters have seen very little time.
00:02:35So now it's Herbert to the air.
00:02:37Moving up.
00:02:38And taken down from behind by Birch.
00:02:42Works to the 42.
00:02:44On that second nine, picks up four.
00:02:47Third down.
00:02:49Well, this was a sell on the run.
00:02:51Watson going to have the fake angle comes in motion.
00:02:54It looks like it's a sweep.
00:02:55There's coverage on McConkie as he double coverage.
00:02:58And really, when you give that type of motion, you're committing your line.
00:03:02You're committing your tight end.
00:03:03You're committing your backs to really sell the run.
00:03:05Hoping you're going to catch the defense off guard.
00:03:08But the Cardinals didn't fall for it and had everybody covered up well.
00:03:11Ivan the secondary.
00:03:13Mitchell the back.
00:03:14Third and five for Herbert.
00:03:15Alt the block.
00:03:16And the throw is incomplete.
00:03:18Coverage by Max Melton.
00:03:19His brother plays for the Packers.
00:03:22They're going for Trey Harris.
00:03:24Fourth and five.
00:03:24Here comes the Charger punting in it.
00:03:26Well, that's one of those timing routes that he gets the ball out of his hands quickly.
00:03:29You're trying to anticipate where he's coming out.
00:03:31Excellent coverage by Melton.
00:03:33Knocking that away.
00:03:34Being in position.
00:03:39J.K. Scott will punt.
00:03:42Devin Duvernay is back.
00:03:45Comes as an unrestricted free agent from the Chicago Bears to the Cardinals.
00:03:51Scott was drafted by Green Bay.
00:03:53Played at Alabama.
00:03:58And he waved his arm.
00:04:00Fair caught at the ten.
00:04:02Hang of five.
00:04:03Six.
00:04:05Forty-eight yard punt.
00:04:07Brissett on deck.
00:04:08You're watching NFL kickoff presented by U2.
00:04:12That's tonight on CBS.
00:04:15First possession.
00:04:16Second hand for the Cardinals.
00:04:18First and ten.
00:04:19Brissett.
00:04:19And the leaping and romping love.
00:04:24Hit by Tui Pelotu at the 12 on that first and ten.
00:04:28With a gain of two.
00:04:29Had to get over some defenders.
00:04:32And the first half resume.
00:04:34Yeah, you see the possessions of the Cardinals and what they were able to get done in the first half.
00:04:37And that's why I was interested to see what Chris O'Leary, the new defensive coordinator for the Chargers,
00:04:42was going to come out and do.
00:04:43He's got to change some things up.
00:04:44Because right now, time of possession is heavily slanted.
00:04:46That opening play, he brought six.
00:04:48It's brought two guys off opposite edges trying to bring pressure early on.
00:04:53And now you've got Derwin James down in the box at the line of scrimmage.
00:04:56Nichols secondary.
00:04:57Love the back.
00:04:58Second down.
00:05:27One eight airing it out.
00:05:28They blitzed two in the middle.
00:05:30So six coming in there.
00:05:31You have to get the ball out of your hands quickly, which is what Brissett did.
00:05:34You get one-on-one.
00:05:35Harrison coming up with a great catch.
00:05:37Mixed results.
00:05:38First couple years in the league.
00:05:39Injured a lot last year.
00:05:41Comes up with a great start with that catch.
00:05:43First and ten.
00:05:44Brissett.
00:05:45And love.
00:05:46And then stoned on the play by Tomlinson with no gain.
00:05:51Second down and ten.
00:05:53Well, once again, you've got five at the line of scrimmage.
00:05:57You've got another three within five yards of the line of scrimmage.
00:06:00You can see here in the second half, O'Leary's approach is going to be bringing much more pressure
00:06:06and trying to get them off the field because not a lot of luck getting them off the field with
00:06:11time of possession
00:06:11and heavily weighted towards Arizona.
00:06:18Second down and ten.
00:06:23Brissett, 17 and 22.
00:06:25Johnson a block at the left tackle.
00:06:27He's got the angular receiver Bourne.
00:06:30Brought down by Molden.
00:06:31He's in the Charger territory at the 42.
00:06:34A quick strike at 12.
00:06:36Another first down.
00:06:37I give credit to Brissett, number one, knowing to where to go with the football.
00:06:40But the play calling, they dropped.
00:06:42They had five at the line of scrimmage.
00:06:44This time they drop it out.
00:06:45They rushed four.
00:06:45Dropped seven into zone coverage.
00:06:47And they once again are just picking them apart.
00:06:49It's just an excellent job of execution and play calling on Arizona's part.
00:06:54Trying to guess and figure out what it is they're trying to adjust to defensively.
00:06:58But right now the Cardinals are dialed in and Mike LaFleur doing a heck of a job.
00:07:02Bourne, six catches.
00:07:03It's first and ten.
00:07:04Algier at the back.
00:07:06And Brissett again.
00:07:06He's right on the screws of the 25 for Wilson.
00:07:10Right in front of Tarheib still.
00:07:11That gain to the 25 of the Chargers.
00:07:14A 17-yard pickup on the heels of a throw to Bourne for 13.
00:07:18Harris to 30 for Harrison to 34 yards.
00:07:21And down to the 25 here.
00:07:23Watch as Wilson stems this and the DB turns his back.
00:07:26As soon as you get your back turned as a quarterback, you're like,
00:07:28well, I'm just laying it to the sideline because there's no way
00:07:30he's going to be able to locate it and drive on it.
00:07:33Excellent execution there between Brissett and Wilson.
00:07:38Tyler Algier is the running back, the free agent from Atlanta.
00:07:41It is first and ten.
00:07:43Brissett.
00:07:43And the run by the block by Gaines and tackled in the play by Caldwell,
00:07:50who is out with an injury for a bit in that first half.
00:07:53It's a first down run.
00:07:55He's to the 14.
00:07:56He picks up ten.
00:07:57They move the chains again.
00:07:59What a drive.
00:08:01What a drive once again.
00:08:03I mean, this has been the consistency they've shown all day.
00:08:07Missed tackle right there as Algier is able to run through it.
00:08:16Algier, the back.
00:08:19And the call.
00:08:20And Khalil Mack smelled it out well.
00:08:22Knocks him for a loss.
00:08:23Back to the 16.
00:08:24Lost a couple on the play.
00:08:26Losing a yard officially.
00:08:28Second down.
00:08:28And 11.
00:08:29Khalil Mack looking good.
00:08:31At 35 years of age.
00:08:33The nine-time Pro Bowler.
00:08:36Well, just a poor attempt of a block on Mack as he just ran right around it
00:08:41and was able to get by Wilkinson and get to the backfield.
00:08:49Love is in.
00:08:52With one tied in.
00:08:53Three wide.
00:08:55Second down.
00:08:56And 11.
00:08:57Brissett.
00:08:58Four-man rush.
00:08:58Chains on the blitz.
00:08:59Incomplete.
00:09:00And Derwin James blew up that play.
00:09:02Coming up the middle.
00:09:03Untouched.
00:09:04Blows it up.
00:09:05Third and 11 for Arizona.
00:09:08Well, he's been near the line of scrimmage and he's had opportunities.
00:09:11They picked him up most of the time.
00:09:12This time coming clean.
00:09:15So, really good job by Brissett.
00:09:17Recognizing no one was there.
00:09:19Just throwing it at the feet of his receiver to get the ball out of his hands.
00:09:24Right side of that offensive line.
00:09:26A question mark coming in.
00:09:27Third string right guard.
00:09:29Journeyman right tackle.
00:09:30But they have done the job today.
00:09:33Algier in motion.
00:09:34Third and 11.
00:09:37Jacoby Brissett.
00:09:3819 and 25 for 228.
00:09:41They bring four.
00:09:43He'll throw.
00:09:44Down the middle.
00:09:44Poking up.
00:09:45And who else?
00:09:46Once again, Derwin James comes through and deflects the pass.
00:09:52Incomplete.
00:09:52Looking for the heavily covered McBride.
00:09:55It's fourth and 11.
00:09:56The Cardinals will go for three.
00:09:59Well, Derwin James is sitting on this.
00:10:01He's really robbing in the middle of the field sitting.
00:10:03Watch.
00:10:04He's going to be right in the middle.
00:10:04You can check him out right there.
00:10:06He's reading McBride's route.
00:10:11Pay attention to that later in the game, Kevin.
00:10:13That could be something that they catch him in the same coverage where McBride goes up,
00:10:17gives him a little stutter like he's stopping, and then takes it down the middle.
00:10:21Ryland will pound through a 34-yard field goal for the Arizona Cardinals.
00:10:26Big games on the play.
00:10:27Highlighted by the 34-yard pass to Harrison.
00:10:30Harrison, but the Chargers keep the Cardinals up.
00:10:34Had a beautiful day in Southern California.
00:10:37Red zone today.
00:10:38Cardinals, four trips, only one touchdown.
00:10:42Brissette, 228 through the air, 19-26.
00:10:45He's playing very efficiently, doing a great job of protecting the football,
00:10:48but getting the ball out of his hands quickly.
00:10:50Here's a look at Michael LaFleur.
00:10:51Watch him coming off the field.
00:10:52He tells Brissette, my bad.
00:10:54He taps his chest.
00:10:55He's like, my bad.
00:10:55And listen, that goes a long way with players.
00:10:57When a head coach or a play caller takes accountability,
00:11:01that's going to have a measurable impact in the locker room.
00:11:05So Rylander just kicked a 34-yard field goal.
00:11:08Kicks it out of bounds.
00:11:08Out to the 40.
00:11:10Ball will be placed at the 40-yard line.
00:11:13First time, Los Angeles.
00:11:14Mel, what do you have?
00:11:15Mike McDaniel told us Michael LaFleur is one of his top five closest friends.
00:11:19They started working together in Cleveland back in 2014, went to Atlanta together in 2015,
00:11:23where they shared an office.
00:11:25Then they joined Kyle Shanahan's staff in San Francisco in 2017, where they went through
00:11:28some tough times together.
00:11:30But Mike LaFleur told us they're practically family, even though McDaniel is harder to get
00:11:33a hold of than the president of the United States.
00:11:35And McDaniel blames it on trying to reduce his screen time, guys.
00:11:39Yeah, he's big on screen time reduction.
00:11:43Hampton the back.
00:11:44It's now first and 10.
00:11:46From the 40, some play action.
00:11:48Alt the block.
00:11:49Herbert winding up.
00:11:50Oh, he's got him!
00:11:52At the 10, looking for Harris.
00:11:54There's a flag.
00:11:55Max Melton was defending.
00:12:02Passing to the three.
00:12:06Pass interference.
00:12:08Defense, number 16.
00:12:09Spot hole.
00:12:10Automatically stopped.
00:12:11Well, Harris is going to be lined up outside, and he just does a little double move.
00:12:15Excellent job of coming back for the football.
00:12:21As Melton's not turning around, going to get that call every time.
00:12:30Big P.I.
00:12:33Ball at the 12.
00:12:40And a golden opportunity in the red zone.
00:12:42Herbert.
00:12:43Hampton.
00:12:45Inside the 10.
00:12:47And brought down by Lopez and picks up two.
00:12:49Second down and eight.
00:12:50Well, they're going to have to take advantage of this field position.
00:12:52Jim Harbaugh talked about it coming out of the half.
00:12:54And just trying to get some things going offensively and have to take advantage of that big penalty that gets
00:13:00them down inside the red zone.
00:13:02Now they've got to get some results out of it.
00:13:07Abushika is back in at left guard.
00:13:09He and Pipkins have been alternating.
00:13:13As you see Melton go in the blue tent at that left guard position.
00:13:19Second down and eight.
00:13:20In goal to fullback.
00:13:21He'll offer a block.
00:13:23Here goes Herbert.
00:13:25And then hit out of bounds by Will Johnson.
00:13:27He's dealing with a minor ankle issue.
00:13:30Last couple weeks, Johnson is.
00:13:32Gain of a yard.
00:13:33By the 6'6", Herbert.
00:13:35And he's down to the 9.
00:13:37Well, Johnson's just on the backside working his way across the field.
00:13:40He's going to be the second receiver in the progression.
00:13:43First you're going to the flat.
00:13:44Then the backside crosser.
00:13:46Great recognition and coverage there in the secondary.
00:13:49Nowhere for Herbert to go with it.
00:13:50McConkie's been quiet.
00:13:52Had a great start, but he's been quiet since.
00:13:54He caught the first four balls.
00:13:55And, you know, has really slowed down.
00:13:58Hasn't had a catch since.
00:13:59Four catches for 74 yards, but those were all early in the game.
00:14:02Herbert to the air.
00:14:03Alt the block.
00:14:04Caught.
00:14:05Touchdown, McConkie.
00:14:09And right on cue.
00:14:17I tell you what, Kevin.
00:14:19You can't put this ball in a better spot.
00:14:21What a throw.
00:14:22The coverage.
00:14:23The coverage is undercutting it.
00:14:25So, if you put this behind at all.
00:14:30He gets that to the outside.
00:14:32That's the only spot he can put it.
00:14:33Otherwise, it's knocked down.
00:14:36Great throw.
00:14:37Good concentration by McConkie being able to bring it in and get around the pylon.
00:14:44Dipper the extra point.
00:14:46He missed a cup on preseason.
00:14:47He's in a little bit of concern there.
00:14:48Droves that baby home.
00:14:50Two-point game.
00:14:516-0-3 in the third.
00:14:53There was a big P.I.
00:14:55on the secondary of the Cardinals.
00:14:58Then Herbert throws a dart to McConkie for six.
00:15:03B continues tonight with Cowboys-Giants on NBC and concludes tomorrow with Broncos-Chiefs on ESPN and ABC.
00:15:11Then week two begins Thursday night with Lions-Bills on Prime Video.
00:15:15Stream games live on your mobile device with NFL+.
00:15:22Trent, Justin Herbert has had five different offensive coordinators in his seven seasons.
00:15:29Maybe he has found the one that's going to last.
00:15:31Well, and the thing about it is the timing of it, right?
00:15:35Getting the ball out of his hands.
00:15:36Early in his career, right?
00:15:374,000-yard season, 4,000-yard season, 30-plus touchdowns.
00:15:42And now with Jim Harbaugh focused on the run the last couple of seasons, now it's about protecting Justin Herbert
00:15:48and having a long career.
00:15:53In recognition of the 25th year since the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York, the NFL family participated in
00:16:03volunteer events across the country to honor and remember those affected by that tragic day.

00:16:20How do the Cardinals respond?
00:16:22They've made four trips to the red zone with only one touchdown.
00:16:26They've got it first and ten.
00:16:27Love the bat.
00:16:29Preset's had a good day.
00:16:30The short drop, the wide throw, the incompletion.
00:16:33He was going for Wilson.
00:16:35Second and ten.
00:16:37Well, and the impact of that is by the defensive line.
00:16:39That's called getting your hands up and affecting the throw of the quarterback.
00:16:45Excellent job by the D-line, realizing the ball's coming out quick and getting your arms up.
00:17:03The second down and ten, the quick throw grabbed by Wilson.
00:17:07Hit on the play by Hart.
00:17:10Henley was there, and of course, Derwin James.
00:17:12It's a gain of five, and he's up to the 26th.
00:17:15Well, you can see with those first two calls, they're anticipating pressure because that's what they did on the last
00:17:20possession coming out here in the second half.
00:17:22So, those first two throws, quick throws.
00:17:26Oh, that caught him.
00:17:27Third down, five, and Preset.
00:17:30He's got his receiver.
00:17:31There's a flag.
00:17:32Catch by Wilson.
00:17:33Grabbed on the play by Cam Hart.
00:17:36He's up to the 41.
00:17:37Well, they got the ball snapped before Tartt was able to get off the field.
00:17:40That's where the flag is, too many men on the field, but they'll decline that after the catch.
00:17:45Got a veteran move by Preset.
00:17:47Yes.
00:17:47I'm going to get that off.
00:17:48Great awareness.
00:17:49That's why they're all players on defense.
00:17:52A penalty for time.
00:17:53We've got to play as a first down.
00:17:58So, Tartt right here, he's going to be trying to get off the field.
00:18:03Preset gets it snapped before he's off.
00:18:05So, he knows he has a free play, but Wilson wins anyway, and they're able to take the game.
00:18:14Preset, 247 passing yards.
00:18:18Love in the backfield, eight carries and 34.
00:18:21Here's his ninth carry of his young NFL career, dancing his way, and then drilled as he was
00:18:28trying to cut Tomlinson, Henley, gain of four, second and six at the 44.
00:18:47So far, this drive being a little bit more like what they did in the first half.
00:18:50Some balanced runs to offset the quick passing game, and then when you can push it up the
00:18:56field, take your chances.
00:19:01Second down, six, four percent, dumps it off.
00:19:04It's McBride, breaking tackle, staggers ahead, has the first down.
00:19:10And he was hit eventually by Molden, and as he crawled, looks like he's going to be short
00:19:14actually, shy of the 49.
00:19:16Down there with a gain of about six on the play.
00:19:19Trey McBride, his sixth reception of the day, and he's got 80 yards, and McBride now is
00:19:28the first tight end in NFL history with five catches or more in 11 consecutive road games.
00:19:35Historic player.
00:19:37As good as the league has now at that position.
00:19:40Oh, they gave him the first down.
00:19:42Look at this.
00:19:43They gave him the first down.
00:19:45They were lining up, thinking, I'm like, Reset's going to do a quarterback sneak.
00:19:49They're going to push the foul, and all of a sudden, it's a first down.
00:19:51Well, let's huddle up.
00:20:00Trey McBride told us his success in this league even caught him by surprise, didn't you guys?
00:20:04Yes.
00:20:05He said, I'm a kid from a small Colorado school.
00:20:09I went to Colorado State.
00:20:10I was overlooked.
00:20:11I wasn't very big coming out of high school.
00:20:13I didn't get a lot of offers, and here I am in the NFL now, leading them for a couple
00:20:19years at that position in receptions.
00:20:21I love what Mike LaFleur told us.
00:20:23He goes, we thought he looked more like a fullback.
00:20:25He said when he first met him, he's like, hey, you know, we didn't expect, you know,
00:20:30coming out of college, we had you labeled more as like a fullback type of tight end.
00:20:38And McBride now holding all the records when it comes to season totals.
00:20:42And I mentioned this back in the first half when he was a rookie, Zach Ertz was with the
00:20:48Cardinals.
00:20:49And he said, I owe a lot to him.
00:20:51He told me I ought to be a pro.
00:20:53From the 49.
00:21:04That's the anchor of that line.
00:21:06The starting left tackle, Paris Johnson.
00:21:09I'm a first-round pick out of Ohio State.
00:21:13Well, just like we talked about with the Chargers, this is a motion and timing-based offense and
00:21:20been a little bit more movement.
00:21:22Mike LaFleur talked about it going in at halftime, that he wasn't happy with a couple of those
00:21:26penalties in the first half.
00:21:28And another one picked up there by Johnson, leaving a little too early.
00:21:36It becomes first and 15, back at the 46.
00:21:42They dump it off to Love, bobbles, reels it in, then dropped it.
00:21:46Incomplete, I believe.
00:21:48Yep.
00:21:49Well, we're going to feel the connection we've had.
00:21:51Second and 15.
00:21:56So, Love had that high ankle sprain on his left ankle early in camp.
00:22:03And he's just trying to get his paces as well in his first NFL game.
00:22:08Second and 15.
00:22:09Look at the time.
00:22:10The dance.
00:22:11The wind-up.
00:22:14And the incompletion.
00:22:15An orange sleeve with a wonderful catch on the side.
00:22:20Third and 15.
00:22:24Coverage by Jackson.
00:22:26Well, you're going to get curve routes on both sides of the field.
00:22:28They jump it.
00:22:30And then Brissette with plenty of time.
00:22:32They only rush four.
00:22:34So, dropping seven into coverage.
00:22:36After it breaks down, the receivers make their adjustment just trying to get open.
00:22:40But excellent coverage that time by the Chargers.
00:22:45Chris O'Leary has six defensive backs.
00:22:49And Brissette's got a third and 15 staring him in the eye.
00:22:54Algier, the back.
00:22:56Underneath.
00:22:57McBride.
00:22:58Broke one.
00:22:59And then finished off on the play by Genesis Smith.
00:23:03The rookie out of Arizona.
00:23:05And a fourth-round pick.
00:23:06And he stops the great tight end right there.
00:23:08Well, shy of the first.
00:23:10Gain of five.
00:23:11Fourth and 10.
00:23:12And the punting in and out there for Arizona.
00:23:14Well, I think that's a smart decision by Brissette.
00:23:16You have the lead.
00:23:17You know the defense knows where the first down sticks are.
00:23:20Don't force something upfield and cause a turnover giving the other team or the Chargers,
00:23:24in this case, the ball at midfield.
00:23:26Go ahead and take the underneath throw.
00:23:27See if you can't break a tackle and make something happen.
00:23:29If not, punt them down in there and get your defense on the field.
00:23:33Blake Gilligan will punt for the first time today.
00:23:37And they got Darius Davis back there.
00:23:40Looking for the translucent roof at the 11 fair caught.
00:23:444-8 on the hang.
00:23:4638-yard punt.
00:23:48Herbert getting ready.
00:23:49Down by two.
00:23:50Late third on season.
00:23:52After the first Cardinal punt of the day.
00:23:54From the 12.
00:23:55Herbert first and 10.
00:23:57Fake to Hampton.
00:23:59Outside they go here for Harris.
00:24:02And shoved out of bounds on the completion to the 19-yard line.
00:24:06Busy day in the NFL opening day.
00:24:08And highlighted by the terrific performance of the Bills and Josh Allen with the win in Houston.
00:24:15Huge day for that man.
00:24:18Three rushing touchdowns for Derrick Henry.
00:24:21It was tied in that one at 31.
00:24:24And the Bears really turned it on.
00:24:26And that game saw a big early lion lead.
00:24:30Saints came back to tie.
00:24:31Went to overtime.
00:24:32And the Saints couldn't convert for two late in the game.
00:24:35And they lose it.
00:24:36Second down four.
00:24:37Hampton up the middle.
00:24:38And hit on the play by Mack Wilson.
00:24:40Takes a couple to bring him down.
00:24:42But he gouges that defense to a gain to the 23-mil and picks up six.
00:24:47And you see quarterback Max Melton back out on the field.
00:24:49But he came off the field limping and went into the medical tent shortly after that P.I. call the
00:24:53last time the defense was on the field.
00:24:55The athletic trainers taped up his left ankle very heavily.
00:24:57He was doing some backpedaling and cuts on the sideline.
00:25:00So something to monitor there.
00:25:01Then Chargers safety Elijah Molden.
00:25:03Questionable with a hamstring injury.
00:25:04Thanks.
00:25:05Awashika is still in there at the left guard.
00:25:07He and Pipkins have been going back and forth in that position all day.
00:25:11First and ten.
00:25:12Herbert through the air.
00:25:13Ten of thirteen.
00:25:14One forty.
00:25:15Touchdown pass to McConkie the last time.
00:25:18Play action here.
00:25:19And they blow it dead.
00:25:21There's the Abuda Baker coming off the edge.
00:25:24Ball start.
00:25:26Offense number 88.
00:25:28Five-yard penalty.
00:25:28Speaking of the offensive line, the Chargers kept eleven offensive linemen.
00:25:34They drafted four.
00:25:35They have a new offensive line coach, Butch Berry, who is with McDaniel in Miami.
00:25:41Well, a lot of new coaches on that offensive side.
00:25:43Not only the coordinator, as you said, McDaniel, but you've got a new O-line coach, running back coach, tight
00:25:48end coach.
00:25:49It's kind of a revamp of, even for a team that went eleven and six the last two years, kind
00:25:55of a revamp of their offense and what they're trying to get done.
00:25:57And Keaton Mitchell is the back and a first and fifteen for Herbert.
00:26:02They bring five.
00:26:05Incomplete.
00:26:05Wilson was in the path of that pass.
00:26:09Second down and fifteen.
00:26:13Yeah, you mentioned the running back coach.
00:26:15The running back coach is Max McCaffrey, the older brother of San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey.
00:26:24Well, in that time, Herbert's lucky that ball wasn't intercepted.
00:26:27He tried dropping his arm and getting it underneath the jumping linebacker there, but fortunate to hit the ground.
00:26:35Well, in that time, we had a big play earlier on in motion.
00:26:45Second, fifteen, big time play right there, turned in by L.J. Collier.
00:26:50Came through and knocked down Hampton.
00:26:52The loss back to the seventeen.
00:26:54They lose a yard.
00:26:55Collier with a big play off that line.
00:27:01Great job of penetration.
00:27:02Nowhere for Hampton to go and just really beating the man off the line of scrimmage.
00:27:06Beat Cole Strange right in the middle of the field.
00:27:12Feeling McDaniels got up his sleeve here.
00:27:15Third and sixteen.
00:27:18Well, here's where you have to make sure you're smart with the ball.
00:27:20We just talked about Brissette not forcing something up the field on third and long.
00:27:25Off the block, Herbert to the air, and drop looking for McConkie.
00:27:29Covered on the play by Mack Wilson.
00:27:31Nice defense by the Cardinals.
00:27:33Wilson, the inside backer, was there.
00:27:36McConkie down.
00:27:45He just caught the touchdown pass moments ago and a bullet thrown by Herbert of eight yards.
00:27:51There's an injury timeout.
00:27:52Welcome back to Los Angeles.
00:27:54The Cardinals lean sixteen-fourteen.
00:27:55Got fourth down coming up.
00:27:56McConkie got up and walked off the field.
00:27:59It's a clean hit by Wilson.
00:28:01Watch as he turns his shoulder and his back.
00:28:03So not leading with his helmet.
00:28:07Nothing illegal about that.
00:28:10McConkie had a chance to hang on to it.
00:28:12But what a collision there by Wilson to knock that ball loose.
00:28:17J.K. Scott will be punting for the Chargers.
00:28:23Kevin DuVernay back at the 34 Arizona.
00:28:32DuVernay, a decorated return man.
00:28:35And wave head arm, kind of.
00:28:37At the 31.
00:28:39Terrific hang time.
00:28:40A 51-yard punt and over six seconds on the hang.
00:28:43One more look at the hit.
00:28:45So what you're trying to do as a quarterback is you're looking your eyes here to keep them held over
00:28:49to that side.
00:28:51Because what you have on an underneath route, you have a sit-down here and then a wrap.
00:28:55You're trying to get that ball just inside or top of the numbers so it keeps it away from a
00:29:01collision.
00:29:01You start off using your eyes to hold that middle defender, which would be Wilson in this case.
00:29:05And then it's a timing throw.
00:29:07Try squeezing it in there.
00:29:09And understanding on third and long, you're going to have to take a hit.
00:29:12That time, great play by Wilson.
00:29:15Recognizing it and knocking the ball loose.
00:29:16Cardinals have a new left guard this year.
00:29:19Isaac Sayamalo.
00:29:21Unrestricted free agent from Pittsburgh.
00:29:23Love in the backfield.
00:29:24First and ten.
00:29:26Tries to carve.
00:29:27They're zeroing in on him.
00:29:28And Caldwell and others were right there.
00:29:30Big hit by Delshawn Phillips.
00:29:32That should take us to the end, it does, of the third quarter.
00:29:35The Cardinals lead at the half 13-7.
00:29:38They lead by two, going to the fourth.
00:29:41Back after this message.
00:29:43You're watching the NFL on CBS.
00:29:50So find a stadium in the woods, suburban Los Angeles.
00:29:53Fourth quarter starts.
00:29:56Cardinals, Jacoby Brissett, 23-33, 2-59.
00:30:02McBride in motion.
00:30:03McBride today, seven catches, 86.
00:30:05Love a block on that second and ten short throw,
00:30:08which is grabbed by Bourne, who has really made his mark.
00:30:13Seventh catch today.
00:30:15Picks up 5-71 receiving yards for the former 49er.
00:30:20He's up to the 36.
00:30:21Well, we talk about McBride coming into this.
00:30:23We talk about Harrison Jr. and Wilson coming into this.
00:30:26But Bourne's having a huge impact now.
00:30:30Six catches on the day and really doing a heck of a job in the middle of the field,
00:30:34complimenting McBride in the middle as well.
00:30:37Running back is Algier.
00:30:39It's third down and five for Brissett.
00:30:44Wilkinson, the block.
00:30:45Short pass, shy of the first down.
00:30:47The tackle there by Hart.
00:30:50And he's hurt on the catch by Bourne.
00:30:53Shy of a first down by one.
00:30:55They get to the 40.
00:30:57Down is Cam Hart.
00:30:59Gain of four.
00:31:01Fourth and one.
00:31:07As we just creep in to this fourth quarter.
00:31:11So there's an injury timeout.
00:31:15As the veteran Hart out of Notre Dame.
00:31:22We'll walk off under his own power.
00:31:25We'll step his.
00:31:25Fell on CBS.
00:31:27Is sponsored by State Farm.
00:31:30Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
00:31:33And by Verizon.
00:31:36The NFL is powered by Verizon 5G.
00:31:43Cam Hart went off under his own power.
00:31:46We'll try to get an update if there's anything noteworthy there.
00:31:49It's fourth down.
00:31:50Blake Gilligan will punt.
00:31:52Long snapper Casey Kreider.
00:31:54And deep back Darius Davis.
00:31:56A returner for the Chargers for the fourth consecutive year.
00:32:01Well, the good news is I can see Hart on the bench.
00:32:03And nobody's, no trainers or doctors are around him.
00:32:06So he must be doing all right.
00:32:07He's going to bounce.
00:32:09Into the end zone.
00:32:10Touchback to the 20.
00:32:14With a minute gone.
00:32:15He didn't like that.
00:32:16He wanted to put him in a different position.
00:32:18Next Sunday, NFL and CBS Slate.
00:32:20Featuring Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers.
00:32:23Against Drake May and the Patriots.
00:32:25Some of you will see the Bengals and the Texans.
00:32:28Jimmy and the guys are on at noon Eastern with NFL Today.
00:32:32And start your day with NFL Today Plus at 10 a.m.
00:32:36We'll see you next Sunday on CBS.
00:32:39And streaming on Paramount Plus.
00:32:44So here's Herbert.
00:32:4615 pass attempts today by Herbert.
00:32:48Tied for the fewest by him through first three quarters of a game in his career.
00:32:55He'll go to the air here on his first nap.
00:32:57He's hit once.
00:32:58Down he goes.
00:33:00Sacked on the play.
00:33:01Second sack.
00:33:02Jordan Burch is the one to bring him down.
00:33:05Down just outside the 15.
00:33:07It's the second sack by this Cardinal defense today.
00:33:10They lose four.
00:33:11He wants Johnston on the wraparound.
00:33:13But the coverage is jumped on top of it.
00:33:15There's nowhere to go.
00:33:16It's one of those trust throws.
00:33:18You got to get rid of it.
00:33:19But as soon as he sees the safety sit on it, he knows he can't unload it.
00:33:22So you have to hang on to the ball or throw it away.
00:33:25And that time, the Cardinals are able to bring him down for the sack.
00:33:30Pipkins is back into the left guard.
00:33:32Second down, 14.
00:33:37Out of the backfield.
00:33:38Harris, the receiver.
00:33:40And then he was knocked down.
00:33:41First time we've said Josh Sweat's name today.
00:33:43Career high.
00:33:4412 sacks last season.
00:33:46Short completion.
00:33:47Third and 11 coming up.
00:33:48They pick up three.
00:33:50Well, they get the sack on first down.
00:33:52They rally and get the short gain on the screen to the outside.
00:33:56And all of a sudden sets up third and long.
00:33:59Let's see what Nick Rawless dials up here for his defense.
00:34:03Chargers on the day are just two of five on third down.
00:34:09Hid Mitchell, the third down back, is back there with Herbert.
00:34:12Who is 11 of 16 through the air.
00:34:16Jake Sweater, the rookie center with the snap.
00:34:18And Herbert to the air.
00:34:21Low and uncatchable for Johnston.
00:34:24He had Will Johnston among a couple back there.
00:34:27So Johnston the target.
00:34:29Johnson the coverage.
00:34:30Fourth and 11.
00:34:32Punting unit comes in.
00:34:32That was quick work by that Arizona defense on the Charger offense.
00:34:37Well, it's almost like he thought Johnston was going to wrap that more as opposed to keeping it skinny.
00:34:43He ran more of a skinny post or a bang up the inside edge of the numbers.
00:34:49Just not on the same page there with that connection.
00:34:51Here's Scott, who has had great hang time today.
00:34:55Hunting again after the quick three and out.
00:34:58Well, and the Cardinals should get good field position here unless he can get away a big one.
00:35:01Now, that impression it is blocked.
00:35:04It's loose.
00:35:05Recovered at the two by the Chargers.
00:35:08Blocked on the play.
00:35:12What a special teams play by the Cardinals.
00:35:19Was it Crawford?
00:35:23Time out on the field.
00:35:24Replay.
00:35:29Special teams coordinator Michael Gobreau has got to be fired up for his unit now.
00:35:38Right up the middle.
00:35:42Oh, it looked like it was Simi Fajoko.
00:35:47Am I right?
00:35:48Let me see.
00:35:49It was.
00:35:50Fajoko, I think, got a hand on it.
00:35:52And Crawford was right then.
00:35:58So the Cardinals have had a goal line stand.
00:36:02They forced a fumble.
00:36:04They block a punt.
00:36:05They've got the ball.
00:36:06It's a three.
00:36:07And it's first and goal to go.
00:36:09Fajoko comes up with a huge special teams play.
00:36:14The former Charger.
00:36:16Now Cardinal.
00:36:19Algier is the back.
00:36:24That's McBride.
00:36:25This is Brissette.
00:36:26And that is the dive handoff to Algier.
00:36:30And was pretty much stymied at the line.
00:36:32No game in the play.
00:36:33Second down and goal.
00:36:35Wow, what a turn of events.
00:36:40Well, I just got through saying that Cardinals were going to get good field position with the Chargers backed up.
00:36:45And then all of a sudden the block happens.
00:36:46Now you have great field position.
00:36:48But what a response from the defense on first down.
00:36:50Getting into the backfield.
00:36:52Not letting them get rolling.
00:36:55They've had red zone trips today but only gotten one touchdown.
00:36:59Now, second down goal to the end zone.
00:37:01Pitch up.
00:37:02Caught.
00:37:02Touchdown.
00:37:04It's McBride.
00:37:07And he beat Derwin James.
00:37:11Well, James has had the upper hand on that matchup.
00:37:14When they've been one-on-one in the middle of the field.
00:37:18When they've been one-on-one in the middle of the field.
00:37:20Derwin James has had the number.
00:37:22But here McBride's going to work to the outside.
00:37:25He rubs right off of the back of the Chargers defender.
00:37:30What a throw.
00:37:31Excellent throw.
00:37:35And McBride, who had 10 red zone touchdowns reception last year.
00:37:40Number two in the NFL.
00:37:41Comes up with a grab.
00:37:43The extra point.
00:37:44Ryland.
00:37:45Perfect.
00:37:4523-14.
00:37:47The Arizona Cardinals.
00:37:49Their 39-year-old head coach making his head coaching NFL debut.
00:37:54Fajoko comes up with a blocked punt of Scott.
00:37:57And they convert with Brissette throwing a touchdown pass of three yards
00:38:02to the tight end McBride.
00:38:12Taking full advantage of the blocked punt.
00:38:15Great field position.
00:38:18McBride with the quick out.
00:38:19And look at this throw.
00:38:20I talked earlier about Herbert's throw to Lab McConkie that was
00:38:23could not defend it because it was so perfectly thrown.
00:38:27Same with that.
00:38:28Brissette putting it to the outside.
00:38:30There's no way Derwin James can get to that.
00:38:36Working on McBride.
00:38:40Working on a Ferrari.
00:38:42You take your time and you pay attention.
00:38:45Well, you've got a two-score game now.
00:38:47So, the Chargers are going to have to have a sense of urgency.
00:38:49I know there's a lot of time left at 1144.
00:38:53But you need two scores.
00:38:55And the Cardinals have been possessing the football.
00:38:57Right now, they've got an advantage of 10 minutes.
00:39:0029 minutes to 19 minutes.
00:39:05They forced a fumble early in the game and they got a field goal.
00:39:10They had a goal line stand and they got another field goal.
00:39:13Now, they've got a blocked punt and they got a touchdown from the five.
00:39:19Here's the return by Darius Davis.
00:39:23And down he goes at the 16-yard line.
00:39:26Fejoko was there again.
00:39:28Again, the former Charger.
00:39:30From the creators of The Good Wife comes a new series about a small firm taking on big power.
00:39:39Cupertino premieres Thursday, October 8th.
00:39:43Part of CBS's premiere week.
00:39:46The Columbia Broadcasting System.
00:39:50Kevin, give Nick Rawless and that defensive staff what they've been able to do game plan-wise against this offense.
00:39:55Because coming into this season, they retained him and they were near the bottom in just about every major defensive
00:40:02category.
00:40:03Johnston outside.
00:40:04Shove that out of bounds by Burke.
00:40:07Now they've got to try finishing it.
00:40:09Absolutely, Mel.
00:40:09A couple of Chargers injury updates for you guys here.
00:40:12We saw Ladd McConkie jog off into the locker room after taking that hit by Mack Wilson.
00:40:15He was holding the left side of his hip.
00:40:17We just got word, though, it is a chest injury.
00:40:20And his return is questionable.
00:40:21Haven't seen him emerge from the locker room just yet.
00:40:23Meanwhile, wide receiver Keiondre Lambert-Smith has a hamstring injury.
00:40:26He is questionable to return as well, guys.
00:40:29Now, we thank you for the update.
00:40:31Herbert through the air.
00:40:3212 of 18, 152.
00:40:35Second down and one.
00:40:36Mason Hampton up the middle.
00:40:39Amashika is at that left guard.
00:40:41And we keep mentioning that left guard because they've been switching the only position.
00:40:44And that is not a good sign.
00:40:51And they didn't catch the number.
00:40:53Crawford.
00:40:55That's Crawford being taken off.
00:40:57Keaton Crawford.
00:40:59Second year defensive back.
00:41:01A special team maven.
00:41:03And we'll try to get an update on him.
00:41:05Hampton the back.
00:41:07First and ten.
00:41:08And you're right.
00:41:09There's got to be a sense of urgency now for the Chargers.
00:41:16And it is deflected at the line.
00:41:18And on the ricochet.
00:41:19Grabbed by the hustling Majoku.
00:41:22Who then caroms off bodies.
00:41:25And goes on to the 40-yard line.
00:41:27A 14-yard catch and run.
00:41:30Off the deflected pass.
00:41:32And a first down, most importantly, for the Chargers.
00:41:35Well, Herbert and the Chargers are very lucky on this one.
00:41:38As the ball is batted in the air.
00:41:40And it goes right to Majoku.
00:41:43Who's able to turn it into a first down.
00:41:49Not sure if that was Lopez on the line or not.
00:41:51They got a hand down.
00:41:52Let's see if we can watch it again.
00:41:54On a first and ten.
00:42:00Herbert going deep.
00:42:01Oh, he's got Tavis.
00:42:04Intercepted at the five.
00:42:06Picked off by Winger.
00:42:09Another turnover.
00:42:10Well, this is going to be holding back here.
00:42:12So, the Cardinals will retain possession of the ball after the interception.
00:42:17And down at the other end.
00:42:19Injured is Davis.
00:42:21He gets up slowly.
00:42:24Holding.
00:42:26Offense.
00:42:27Under 69.
00:42:28Penalty is declined.
00:42:30He's over the play.
00:42:30Interception.
00:42:31Arizona's ball.
00:42:32First and ten.
00:42:33And for Winger.
00:42:34I'm out of the field.
00:42:35Who comes as a free agent from Jacksonville.
00:42:39Replacing Jalen Thompson.
00:42:41His seventh career interception.
00:42:43Herbert was going deep.
00:42:45But coverage was heavy.
00:42:50Well, on a day they began with Jeremiah Love.
00:42:53And a quarterback who's looked great in Brissette.
00:42:56And a defensive coordinator that was under siege last year.
00:42:59But has come up with a great game plan today.
00:43:03An interception right there by Winger.
00:43:04A first and ten handoff.
00:43:06And this goes to Algier.
00:43:07Who climbs for a couple.
00:43:09It'll be second down in eight.
00:43:10Big plays in this game, Trent.
00:43:12Well, first off, Winger gets the forced fumble here.
00:43:16By pushing Harris back into Hampton.
00:43:19And then the sack on fourth and goal.
00:43:21The blocked punt that sets up the touchdown.
00:43:26And then Winger with the interception.
00:43:30Everything going the way of the Cardinals today.
00:43:33That's the first time the Chargers have had a punt block in 76 games.
00:43:37With a handoff here to Tyler Algier.
00:43:39Down to the ten.
00:43:40And last time they had a punt block was back in November of 2021 by Pittsburgh.
00:43:46And coming up with big plays by the defensive coordinator, Nick Wallace.
00:43:54And a group that has followed him today.
00:43:58And now with a nine-point lead in the ball.
00:44:01Here's a third and five, Trent, coming up.
00:44:03Well, and this is where you have to.
00:44:04You're down inside your ten or right at your ten-yard line.
00:44:07So, you don't want to force something in there and have a turnover.
00:44:11Obviously, picking up the first down keeps the clock moving as they rush five.
00:44:15Here they come.
00:44:16There goes Brissette who's got McBride.
00:44:18Man, what a throw.
00:44:19What a throw right in front of James.
00:44:21First down conversion.
00:44:23Out to the 17.
00:44:24On third and five, they pick up eight as Brissette throws a dart.
00:44:31And I don't know how you play better cover.
00:44:33I mean, there's no separation there.
00:44:35This is just a perfectly thrown ball.
00:44:38And there's battling at the top of the route.
00:44:40Yes, both of them are battling with hands.
00:44:42But the placement of the ball and the strength of McBride to bring that in gets the first down.
00:44:48Boy, now you get a first down.
00:44:49Eats up a couple minutes on the clock at the least.
00:44:52Well, and that's what they're dealing with right now.
00:44:54It's two possessions as it stands right now.
00:44:57Algier on first and ten.
00:44:59Breaking through and finally brought down by Genesis Smith.
00:45:04As he drags him out near the 24 in a gain of seven.
00:45:08Well, when a head coach makes his debut in the league,
00:45:11Mike LaFleur's got his family here.
00:45:13His wife is Lauren there in the black.
00:45:16His kids, daughter, Addison's son.
00:45:18Wes, his mom and dad are here.
00:45:20Denny and Christy.
00:45:21Denny was a coach.
00:45:23So you can just imagine the pride.
00:45:25Look at the nervousness here.
00:45:26And look at how calm he is here.
00:45:29I love that.
00:45:30I was like, oh, he's just sitting there.
00:45:31Legs crossed.
00:45:32Like, oh, here we go.
00:45:32This is what we do.
00:45:34He's got another son coaching today.
00:45:35The Green Bay Packers and Matt LaFleur up in Minneapolis.
00:45:39Second down and three.
00:45:41It's Tyler Algier.
00:45:42And Sayamalu gave a nice block in there.
00:45:45Another first down run.
00:45:47And a block by Isaac Sayamalu.
00:45:50Open up the door.
00:45:51I just love how calm he is and his mom's a nervous wreck.
00:45:59Seven-yard run there by the running back.
00:46:03Well, at some point in time, if you're the Chargers, yes, you don't want to give up big plays.
00:46:07But you've got to start selling out.
00:46:09You've got to start, you know, what are we now?
00:46:11Six and a half minutes to go in the game.
00:46:12You're down two possessions already.
00:46:15You've got to put some guys on an island.
00:46:16Yes, you may give up a big play.
00:46:18But you need to get the ball twice here in the final half of this fourth quarter.
00:46:23First and ten, Algier.
00:46:26El Torpedo is way out to the 35.
00:46:29And he picks up four.
00:46:31So he's getting good chunks of yards.
00:46:33And here comes Jeremiah Love to give him a breather.
00:46:38Yeah, how about that?
00:46:40You take out Algier and you bring in Love as a breather.
00:46:43So he was behind Bichon, not behind, but he was with Bichon Robinson down in Atlanta.
00:46:48He comes here as a free agent.
00:46:50They knew and they told him, hey, if he's available, we're going to draft him.
00:46:53And they did, but it's been a one-two punch for sure.
00:46:56Well, and you look around the league and that's really, other than Derrick Henry,
00:47:00it's really, you know, a one-two combo and a lot of effective running games.
00:47:04Here's Love, first time he's touched the ball here in the fourth.
00:47:07He's tackled around the waist by Smith.
00:47:09Rookie on rookie, out to the 38, couple yards shy of a first.
00:47:12On that second down and six, he picks up four.
00:47:15Love today, 11 carries and 41 yards.
00:47:18Algier, 14 carries and 52.
00:47:20So the ground game has been a factor for the Cardinals today.
00:47:24Well, it's been a huge factor.
00:47:25And that was a non-existent factor for them a year ago.
00:47:28Over 100 yards as the team rushing.
00:47:30Brissette is approaching 300 yards passing.
00:47:34This has been a great offensive performance by the Cardinals
00:47:38and what Michael Flores put together.
00:47:41You get a first down here.
00:47:42That clock at five.
00:47:43It makes it really hard.
00:47:44Yes, it does.
00:47:46Love is there.
00:47:47The fake by Brissette.
00:47:48He's being chased by Henley.
00:47:50And he does not get the first down because he was whacked by Troy Dive.
00:47:56And that's really all he could do, right?
00:47:58You're just trying to...
00:48:00Nobody was open downfield.
00:48:01You didn't want to throw and get an incompletion.
00:48:03Can you keep the ball?
00:48:08He says, hey, I tried to stay in bounds.
00:48:10I'm surprised the clock isn't running.
00:48:12It looked like he realizes it and he goes down.
00:48:17Nope.
00:48:18He ended up falling out of bounds.
00:48:19So that's why the clock is stopped.
00:48:22Blake Gilligan's going to punt.
00:48:24Gilligan is back at the 25.
00:48:27And Gilligan will be punting to Darius Davis.
00:48:34So the Chargers have two timeouts.
00:48:37And just under five with which to work.
00:48:39Well, and they got the two-minute warning, Kevin.
00:48:41So they've got...
00:48:42Oh, another one.
00:48:44Another one in there.
00:48:45Touch back to the 20.
00:48:49He's quietly one of the better punters in the NFL.
00:48:51But that was a tough one.
00:48:54As you take a look at Herbert taking the field.
00:48:57He's thrown a touchdown pass.
00:48:58He's thrown a pick.
00:49:00Today he's gone 13-20 for 165.
00:49:03The numbers for Jacoby Brissett.
00:49:05First time he has started a season as a starting quarterback
00:49:09in this now his 11th NFL year.
00:49:13Well, and Brissett completing 73% of his passes.
00:49:16He's done a good job of getting the ball out of his hands.
00:49:18Herbert 65%.
00:49:20So been very efficient.
00:49:22But I said there was urgency earlier.
00:49:24There's got to be a lot of urgency now
00:49:26knowing that you're down two possessions.
00:49:28Here we go.
00:49:28Back to pass.
00:49:29First and 10.
00:49:30Herbert pressured.
00:49:31Got away.
00:49:32Escapes.
00:49:33Runs.
00:49:34Facing a tackle here by Gibbons
00:49:36who ushers him out of bounds
00:49:37after the 11-yard run.
00:49:40In fact, he may have gotten a little more than that.
00:49:42He did get 11.
00:49:43And he's out to the 31.
00:49:45He's trying to get the ball out to his right.
00:49:46But Cole Strains gets pushed back right into his lap.
00:49:49So he can't step into it.
00:49:51Once he spins out of it,
00:49:52he's able to see an open space get to the get out of bounds,
00:49:55which is critical at this juncture
00:49:57with the amount of time left in the game.
00:49:59So getting the first down, getting out of bounds.
00:50:01New running back, Keaton Mitchell.
00:50:04The first and 10 and a couple timeouts.
00:50:06And down by nine.
00:50:07That ball deflected as they get right in that passing lane
00:50:10and knock it away.
00:50:11Second deflected ball thrown.
00:50:13And that may have been Dante Stills,
00:50:15who had a big sack earlier in the game.
00:50:17Stills has had a really good game today,
00:50:19getting after the quarterback,
00:50:20getting his hands up,
00:50:21being around the ball,
00:50:22being disruptive.
00:50:27So two deflective passes by the Cardinals.
00:50:32Interception, fumble recovery,
00:50:34goal line stand and a block punt.
00:50:36Part of their day and part of their 23-14 lead.
00:50:41Whoops.
00:50:44Ball start.
00:50:45Ball start.
00:50:46Offense number 66.
00:50:49Five-yard penalty, second down.
00:50:50The rookie, a center, Jake Slaughter, out of Florida.
00:50:54They had Biotish, Tyler Biotish,
00:50:58who is going to be their center.
00:50:59And they wanted to put Slaughter, a rookie, at guard.
00:51:02But Biotish blew a knee in ACL in camp,
00:51:06and so they moved the rookie to center.
00:51:08Well, and he played three years of center at Florida.
00:51:10So it's not like it's a strange position for him,
00:51:12one that he's transitioned too well.
00:51:14And I think he's played a good game today.
00:51:15Of course, that penalty right there doesn't help.
00:51:18Second 15, another flag.
00:51:19This is going to be maybe on alt, the right tackle.
00:51:22Let's see.
00:51:23Here come the boos.
00:51:25Now skating down.
00:51:27Ball start.
00:51:29Offense number one was moving forward prior to that.
00:51:32John Steinberg, the second down.
00:51:38Moving forward.
00:51:39Had his momentum rocking forward as he's bouncing to the outside.
00:51:43Can't do it.
00:51:45Second and 20 now.
00:51:47Four and a half to go.
00:51:48The two timeouts.
00:51:57Quickly inside.
00:51:59Caught by Mitchell.
00:52:00Read well by Mack Wilson.
00:52:01Makes the stop.
00:52:02Flag thrown.
00:52:03Got out to the 24.
00:52:04This looks to be against the Chargers on a gain of four.
00:52:09Holding.
00:52:10Offense number 66.
00:52:1210-yard penalty.
00:52:13That's two on this drive on the rookie.
00:52:16Well, three consecutive plays, the penalties.
00:52:19Yeah.
00:52:23Five, five, and ten.
00:52:24So now all of a sudden, second and 30.
00:52:37Now, second down and 30.
00:52:40They need the 41.
00:52:42And Herbert.
00:52:44Broken up.
00:52:45Beautifully on the play by Keetrell Clark.
00:52:49First down we've called his name today.
00:52:52Clark comes up with the deflection.
00:52:54Third and 34.
00:52:55Herbert and the Chargers.
00:53:04Well, the timing just hasn't been there in this timing offense.
00:53:09It's...
00:53:09I don't know if it comes as a big surprise, though, right?
00:53:12We were talking about threading the needle as much as the McDaniel offense does.
00:53:17The new running back here.
00:53:19And for the first time today, Kamani Vidal, who led the team in rushing a year ago.
00:53:24In right now.
00:53:27Timeout.
00:53:31Second charge timeout.
00:53:32Because they were down to zeroes on the play clock.
00:53:35The 32nd timeout.
00:53:41So, this is what they got coming up.
00:53:43Here they got Vegas next week.
00:53:46Then, at Buffalo, at Seattle, against Denver, at the Chiefs and Arrowhead, against the Rams here.
00:53:53Houston here.
00:53:55I mean, and Baltimore had a big win today.
00:53:58And they look...
00:53:58Well, and after Vegas, the only teams, as you said, were Baltimore and Kansas City that had a losing record
00:54:04in that next stretch.
00:54:06They're at Kansas City and at Baltimore.
00:54:09I mean, they're on the road for two teams that are looking to get back in the mix again in
00:54:15terms of the playoffs.
00:54:16Six back.
00:54:17Third and 30.
00:54:18Here comes Herbert.
00:54:20Four-man rush.
00:54:21Flush from the pocket.
00:54:22And underneath.
00:54:24Najoku.
00:54:25And knocked out of bounds on the play.
00:54:28But Enzel Burke on a gain of 12.
00:54:32Fourth down.
00:54:34Offense, I think, is staying on the field.
00:54:36It is.
00:54:37Fourth and 18.
00:54:39Well, and I think if you hadn't called that last timeout, you could have punted it away, used the two
00:54:45timeouts and the two-minute warning.
00:54:48But now, with just one timeout, you have no choice but to go for it on fourth and 18.
00:54:55I anticipate a prevent-type defense.
00:54:58Let's see if they...
00:55:00They need the 41.
00:55:04So, it's fourth and La Jolla.
00:55:08And he's got Najoku shy.
00:55:11And the flag is thrown.
00:55:14Flag is thrown on the play at the 45.
00:55:16It looks like it's going to be on the Chargers.
00:55:19And on downs, the Cardinals are going to get the ball.
00:55:23Another penalty on L.A.
00:55:25They're going to call Najoku with pushing off at the top of the route.
00:55:31But as you said, Kevin, that'll...
00:55:37Pass interference.
00:55:39Offense number 83.
00:55:41The penalty is a climb.
00:55:43The result of the play is a turnover on downs.
00:55:45First down, Arizona.
00:55:46And the Chargers are out of timeouts.
00:55:52So, now the ball's at the 38 in Arizona.
00:55:55We'll take over in Charger territory.
00:56:09Running back is Algier.
00:56:12And who said it was 27-37.
00:56:14We'll give the handoff to Algier,
00:56:17who is a five-year running back out of BYU.
00:56:20Up the middle he goes.
00:56:23And tackle by Nell, Sean Phillips.
00:56:27I said the Chargers did not have a timeout.
00:56:31They had one.
00:56:32Yeah, that's the one.
00:56:33Yeah, that's the one.
00:56:33I'll take that back.
00:56:35My mistake.
00:56:38And now they're out.
00:56:39But I would think they're just going to run the ball
00:56:40or throw a screen or something like that.
00:56:43You're not...
00:56:45Now it's more of a...
00:56:46Now it's more of a time thing.
00:56:57I don't think many people saw this coming.
00:57:00No.
00:57:01I don't think many people did.
00:57:02If you look around, you look at...
00:57:04I think coming into this game,
00:57:06this is probably the widest spread in terms of margin.
00:57:11Coming into the weekend.
00:57:12And so, yeah, there weren't a lot of people.
00:57:14When you consider Cardinals won three games a year ago,
00:57:18the Chargers won 11.
00:57:20They're coming off of another playoff season.
00:57:23And new head coach,
00:57:25one of the youngest teams in the NFL,
00:57:27are the Cardinals.
00:57:30Three tight ends.
00:57:31Second down and eight.
00:57:32Algier will take it.
00:57:33And still is around his ankles.
00:57:36Along with Khalil Mack.
00:57:38He'll pick up three.
00:57:39He's down to the 33
00:57:41as we take you to New York and Adam Schein.
00:57:43And Kevin Trent,
00:57:45the Vikings take the lead for the first time today.
00:57:47Former Packer Aaron Jones punching it in.
00:57:50Two-point conversion.
00:57:51Good.
00:57:52Carson Wentz to Justin Jefferson.
00:57:55Back to you.
00:57:58Moments ago,
00:57:59we just showed the family of Mike LaFleur,
00:58:02the Arizona coach.
00:58:03His brother, Matt,
00:58:04is coaching the Packers.
00:58:06And Denny was watching that game.
00:58:08That Vikings.
00:58:08That's probably what he was on.
00:58:09That's probably what he was watching on his phone.
00:58:12Third down and five.
00:58:16And then Algier handoff.
00:58:18And he'll grind his way near the 30.
00:58:22And picks up three.
00:58:23There he is.
00:58:24He's watching the Packers.
00:58:25Vikings.
00:58:26And watching his son.
00:58:28Trying to go 2-0 today,
00:58:30but they may have to have the split.
00:58:32We'll have to see what happens.
00:58:33It doesn't matter who's the quarterback for the Vikings.
00:58:37If you find Justin Jefferson,
00:58:39you're going to do well.
00:58:40Yeah.
00:58:42So, they're going to go for a field goal.
00:58:43The ball will go down at the 39.
00:58:45It is a 49-yard field goal try.
00:58:48Weiland today has kicked three.
00:58:50He is three of four.
00:58:53And this is a 49-yard field goal attempt.
00:58:58To build their lead.
00:58:59And it is perfect.
00:59:0326-14.
00:59:06As the Arizona Cardinals have taken a bigger lead
00:59:10over the L.A. Chargers.
00:59:13The Chargers haven't led all day.
00:59:15We've had one tie.
00:59:16It's seven.
00:59:17But the Cardinals have been on top
00:59:19the majority of the game.
00:59:24Two and a half to go.
00:59:27Jacoby Bursette.
00:59:2827-37 today.
00:59:30Well, first play of the game is a seam
00:59:32to McBride up the inside edge of the numbers.
00:59:34And then he gets Harrison one-on-one.
00:59:36And puts it perfectly over the shoulder.
00:59:39And then this last touchdown pass to McBride.
00:59:41In a perfect place away from Derwin James.
00:59:44Look at the numbers putting up there.
00:59:45Completing 73% of his passes.
00:59:52He felt very confident when we talked to him this week.
00:59:54He was very confident.
00:59:56He felt good about, from a leadership standpoint,
00:59:59being able to come in as the starter
01:00:01and have that foundation set coming off of last season.
01:00:08Now you've got some balance with the run game.
01:00:10The defense stepped up.
01:00:11Nick Rollis doing a great job on the defensive side.
01:00:13Being able to come up with some turnovers
01:00:16and some pressure.
01:00:18Running back, Vidal, along with Davis,
01:00:22are back on this kickoff.
01:00:25And five yards, six yards deep.
01:00:27He'll go to an E.
01:00:28Out to the 35.
01:00:31So the Cardinals will have the short fly back
01:00:33to Phoenix tonight.
01:00:35They've got a division game.
01:00:37In fact, two in a row coming up.
01:00:39Home against Seattle.
01:00:41Next week after that, they go to Santa Clara.
01:00:45Then they have the Giants.
01:00:48Long flight.
01:00:49In New England.
01:00:49Yeah, but they've got their own play.
01:00:51You know, they've got the triple seven.
01:00:52Yeah, they've got their own play.
01:01:00Two and a half to go.
01:01:01Chargers are out of timeouts.
01:01:02And they trail 26-14.
01:01:04Chargers are going to have to get a quick touchdown
01:01:06and then try and get the onside kick.
01:01:08Look for them to be aggressive here.
01:01:10And Cardinals bringing the heat.
01:01:12Oh, they come and they get them again.
01:01:13A third sack.
01:01:15This time, Budabaker.
01:01:17Like a torpedo up the middle.
01:01:19Throws them for a loss.
01:01:20Back to the 27.
01:01:22Three sacks today by the Cardinals,
01:01:24who had 30 as a team all of last season.
01:01:28Well, they had seven guys stacked at the line of scrimmage.
01:01:32All that's supposed to do is cause confusion with protection.
01:01:34They ended up dropping out two and overloading from the left.
01:01:37That's why two guys were free on that left side.
01:01:40Wide and uncatchable for Johnston with the coverage by Clark.
01:01:44Third and 18.
01:01:45They lost eight on the sack.
01:01:55And the ball will be at the 27.
01:02:07And back in a running back is Omari and Hampton.
01:02:12Touchdown, Ron, earlier in the game of nine yards.
01:02:14That's Herbert to the air.
01:02:16And that is caught.
01:02:18Nice looking catch made by Harris.
01:02:20Right in front of Budabaker.
01:02:23It's the two minute warning with the Cardinals on time.
01:02:26You're watching NFL kickoff presented by YouTube TV.
01:02:32Those are trying to end the nine game losing streak.
01:02:37Carried over from last season.
01:02:39Fourth and seven.
01:02:40Herbert to the air.
01:02:41And he's got Gadsden who is shy of the first down.
01:02:45Whacked by Wilson on downs again.
01:02:48And we've seen this multiple times today.
01:02:51The Cardinal defense holds.
01:02:52They're going to win it.
01:02:54The Chargers are out of timeouts.
01:02:57The ball will be at the 44 of L.A.
01:03:00And an opening weekend in the NFL.
01:03:02The Chargers in a difficult division will go to 0-1.
01:03:06And the Cardinals will go to 1-0.
01:03:08Now, they began last season 2-0.
01:03:11They did.
01:03:12And then they had a tough stretch there.
01:03:13Five games where they lost by just 13 points in those five games.
01:03:17So, but what an incredible.
01:03:19I'm not going to talk about last year with these.
01:03:22What a great job by Mike LaFleur and his coaching staff to come in here with high expectations for the
01:03:30Chargers.
01:03:30Coming off a back-to-back 11-6 seasons and the Cardinals off of a three-win season and a
01:03:36new coaching staff.
01:03:37And just what a great job by LaFleur and his whole crew.
01:03:40The job that they've done.
01:03:42That's the owner.
01:03:43That's the new head coach.
01:03:44That's his wife.
01:03:46Mom and dad.
01:03:47You can only imagine the feeling that he has right now.
01:03:51But before we get out of here.
01:03:53The Chargers have a loaded football team.
01:03:56They've got a lot of talent.
01:03:57They've just got to get some things fixed.
01:03:59And it wasn't their day.
01:04:02It just, there's a long way to go.
01:04:04Jim Harbaugh will get this right if that's what he does.
01:04:08Just wasn't their day.
01:04:09The Cardinals had their number and got it done.
01:04:11To begin a season as a first-year head coach in this organization, you've got to go back to 1973.
01:04:21And that was Don Correale who won in his Cardinal head coaching debut.
01:04:27Going back since 1970, Don Correale was the last to win to begin a season as a new head coach.
01:04:34Larry Wilson was a Week 14 interim coach, the Hall of Fame safety, back in 79.
01:04:41And then Mike LaFleur does it today.
01:04:45Just amazing.
01:04:46You can see the tears of joy.
01:04:48This is an incredible win.
01:04:50Well, and they've got Seattle next week and then at San Francisco, he was with the Rams the last three
01:04:54years.
01:04:54So he knows this division, these next couple opponents coming up.
01:04:59A terrific win for the Arizona Cardinals on the road.
01:05:03Family happy in celebration.
01:05:07And the former coordinator under Sean Vey with the Rams comes up with a huge win in his debut.
01:05:17With an organization that has really been staggering of life.
01:05:20They've only been to the playoffs one time in the last decade.
01:05:24So for Trent Green, Melanie Collins, and Gene Steratore, Kevin Harlan saying goodnight from Los Angeles.
01:05:31It's time now for bonus coverage.
01:05:33We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.
01:05:38We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.
01:05:41We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.
01:05:41We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.

01:05:48We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.
01:05:49We take you live to Minnesota and Gymnance.
