00:00:05It is a gorgeous day with a lot of fanfare and the opening Sunday of the season.
00:00:11And welcome to NFL Kickoff, presented by YouTube TV.
00:00:19And good afternoon, everyone.
00:00:21Kevin Harlan, Trent Green will check in with Melanie Collins in just one second.
00:00:24Hopes are high here in Los Angeles, and it begins with their quarterback, Justin Herbert.
00:00:29Well, they should be high.
00:00:30You have a quarterback like Justin Herbert now in his seventh year.
00:00:32He's had some successful seasons, have not done well in the playoffs the last couple years,
00:00:36and that's why Jim Harbaugh changed things up.
00:00:39He changed up offensive coordinators and brought in Mike McDaniel.
00:00:42Been a lot of excitement about these two coming into the season.
00:00:45And as for the Cardinals, a team which won three games a year ago,
00:00:49they got one of the most coveted players in college football in the draft.
00:00:53Well, they needed some help in the run game.
00:00:54Their run game was not good enough a year ago,
00:00:56and that's why you go out with the third pick and you get Jeremiah Love,
00:00:59and you try and change the scope of what that run game is going to be about.
00:01:03And then Trey McBride set the NFL record for receptions last year at 126.
00:01:08Need to have the outside guys open things up for him in the middle,
00:01:11but they're going to be formative in the middle of the field with Trey McBride.
00:01:14Let's say good afternoon to the third member of our crew, Melanie Collins.
00:01:17Good afternoon, guys.
00:01:18And Mike McDaniel told us he moved his family across the country
00:01:21for the opportunity to coach Justin Herbert,
00:01:24a quarterback that's been at the top of his list for a long time.
00:01:26And he said even in saying all of that,
00:01:28Herbert has exceeded his expectations.
00:01:30Now, as for what this Chargers offense will look like today,
00:01:33McDaniel said don't expect to see what you saw in Miami the last four years.
00:01:37He said this is different personnel with different skill sets.
00:01:39But he said if it's anything like they've seen in practice,
00:01:42it'll be something special to watch.
00:01:44Jim Harbaugh is excited to see the debut of it today as well.
00:01:46But he told us, Kev, week one's always like jumping out of an airplane.
00:01:49You just hope the parachute opens.
00:01:52You better believe it.

00:02:05Head coach making his NFL head coaching debut with Arizona.
00:02:09We've had the flip of the coin.
00:02:11The Chargers won.
00:02:13They're going to take the second half kickoff.
00:02:15Deep back will be Devin Duvernay along with Jalen Brooks.
00:02:20And to kick off for the Chargers will be Cameron Dicker.
00:02:27It is warm in Los Angeles.
00:02:29There is some breeze coming in from the side.
00:02:32And the season is underway.
00:02:35And will be taken by Duvernay, who has had great success returning kicks and slides by the 30-yard line.
00:02:42It's a 25-yard return.
00:02:45So Jacoby Brissett, and this is one of the great stories coming into the season, he begins camp and the
00:02:51season as a first-time starter.
00:02:53Well, the thing that's unique about him, and this is his 11th season in the NFL, he's been with six
00:02:57different teams, been with New England twice.
00:03:00But having the opportunity to start as the offseason went through, you get to exude your leadership and the way
00:03:06you want to build a team.
00:03:07And really, that's been a big step for him this offseason, knowing going into the season he was going to
00:03:12be the starter.
00:03:13Running back is Tyler Algier.
00:03:15To the air goes the quarterback, Brissett.
00:03:18And down the middle, and who does he have?
00:03:20Trey McBride.
00:03:21It's a great catch.
00:03:23An acrobatic grab.
00:03:24A gain at 27 on the play to the 43 of the Chargers.
00:03:27Well, the Chargers decide to rotate coverage to Trey McBride.
00:03:31Watch the drop.
00:03:32Safety is going to come down to this side, rotate back to the middle.
00:03:34So now you've got double seams.
00:03:36As a quarterback, you're trying to work those seams.
00:03:38You hold the safety with your eyes, and you're able to hit McBride right up the numbers.

00:04:03Here are some guys you're going to be watching today.
00:04:05Kevin Hughes talked about Algier, and that's where he's going to be involved.
00:04:08They're going to mix in Love.
00:04:09They don't want to overuse Love.
00:04:10But on the outside, Marvin Harrison only played 12 games a year ago.
00:04:14And Michael Wilson, over 1,000 yards receiving, rewarded with a new contract a few weeks ago.
00:04:19Those two guys have to shine on the outside.
00:04:21That will help open McBride in the middle of the field.
00:04:27There's a look at Michael Wilson.
00:04:29Big contract, 1,000-yard season.
00:04:32Algier at the back.
00:04:33It's second down and eight for Jacoby Brissett.
00:04:38Walked by Paris Johnson and bobbled and dropped as they were going down the middle to Marvin Harrison.
00:04:44In the vicinity, Elijah Molden.
00:04:46Incomplete.
00:04:47It'll be third and eight.
00:04:50Well, Brissett has, and he's just a little bit late with the ball.
00:04:54There is a window between the two linebackers.
00:04:56He has to put it where he does.
00:04:57Otherwise, if you lead him, it's going to get intercepted.
00:05:00But just a tick late with that ball, the window was there.
00:05:04Harrison not able to hang on to the ball thrown behind him.
00:05:14It's third down and eight.
00:05:19Walked by Algier.
00:05:21Here comes Brissett.
00:05:22He needs the 33.
00:05:23Chased on the play by Tiri Perotu.

00:05:29It's a run to the 31.
00:05:30On third and eight, he picks up ten first down Cardinals.
00:05:33And, Kevin, that's not something Brissett wants to lean on is the run game from him.
00:05:37But he sees that they're rushing five, dropping six into coverage, and nobody's assigned to him because he's normally not
00:05:45a threat to take off and run.
00:05:46But when he steps up in the pocket, sees the flow of the defense, he's able to pick up the
00:05:50first down.
00:05:51Look at Mike LeFleur.
00:05:52In his first season as the head coach, 39-year-old former offensive coordinator for the Rams for three years.
00:06:00It's Sean McVay.
00:06:02It's first and ten.
00:06:05Algier, the back.
00:06:07Brissett.

00:06:10He'll dance.
00:06:11And then got whacked in the middle by the linebacker.
00:06:13Henley picks up five and he's down to the 25th.
00:06:16And speaking of Mike LeFleur, you're going to have two very similar offenses.
00:06:21They come from the same tree, right?
00:06:23McDaniel and LeFleur work together for years.
00:06:27So they're under that Shanahan tree.
00:06:30So you're going to see similarities.
00:06:32The difference is from a personnel standpoint.
00:06:34You know, you talk about Miami and what McDaniel did there.
00:06:37And you talk about, you know, what the Chargers are going to do with their personnel.
00:06:40But you're going to see two similar offenses, but called very differently because of that personnel.
00:06:46Three tight ends on a second down and five.
00:06:50Algier is looking for a block.
00:06:51He was looking outside for Wilson to give it to him.
00:06:54And he crushes his way down to about the 20 and picks up four.
00:06:59And that will bring up third down.
00:07:01And Dan Henley was there.
00:07:03Well, crushing his way forward is a great way to describe it.
00:07:06Watch the contact that happens.
00:07:08And he's 5'10", but he's 220, 25 pounds.
00:07:11He keeps his legs moving.
00:07:13And the quarterback will take it here.
00:07:15And I think he's nudged his way.
00:07:17He has for the first down to the 19.
00:07:19So the drive began deep in Cardinal territory.
00:07:23The big play McBride for 27.
00:07:26The quarterback, Brissette, ran for 10.
00:07:28And here they are now.

00:07:32Well, it should be no surprise Brissette's going to run a quarterback sneak on short yardage like that.
00:07:36He's been excellent at that his entire career.
00:07:39And they need to do a better job here in the red zone, converting and getting touchdowns.
00:07:45Set themselves up on this opening drive inside the 20.
00:07:48Love is in.
00:07:49Missed a lot of camp with a high ankle sprain.
00:07:52He's in there now.
00:07:53First and 10 opening drive.
00:07:56Love got away from ones.
00:07:58Withers his way.
00:07:59And then Tui Pelotu brings him down after Tartt couldn't bring him down.
00:08:04And he bashed down just inside the 19.
00:08:07A gain of a yard.
00:08:09Well, Tartt's in the backfield right from the snap.
00:08:11Really nowhere for Love to go.
00:08:13He's lucky to get back to the line of scrimmage.
00:08:14But just an excellent job by Tartt just splitting the line and getting it to the backfield.
00:08:23New defensive coordinator for the Chargers, Chris O'Leary, had been on the staff, went to college as a defensive
00:08:29coordinator.
00:08:29Now he's back taking the place of Jesse Minter.
00:08:33Running back is one.
00:08:35Second down, nine.
00:08:36Brissette to the air.
00:08:37There's a block.
00:08:38And there's the throw.
00:08:39And caught on the wing.
00:08:40Kendrick Bourne corkscrews his way close to the first down.

00:08:52Well, Hart's going to work into the slot.
00:08:54It looks like he's going in, going to cross the field.

00:09:11What a drive to begin this season for the Cardinals.

00:09:22And Brissette will take the first of three timeouts.
00:09:25The Cardinals only had two opening drive touchdowns, Trent.
00:09:29All of last season.
00:09:31Tied for the third fewest in the NFL.
00:09:34But Mike LaFleur, putting his fingerprints on this offense, there's going to be a lot of shifting, a lot of
00:09:39motion, just a different feel offensively.
00:09:41Well, and he talked to us.
00:09:42He said not only the fact that this offense, they didn't move and shift and do different personnel groups a
00:09:48lot last year.
00:09:48They're going to infuse some of that because we know that's what this offense does.
00:09:51But he talked to us about the importance of having a veteran quarterback like Brissette, a guy that's been in
00:09:56multiple systems, understands the calmness of it all, and has done an excellent job in this opening drive.
00:10:01I know the Chargers have tried mixing some things up with Chris O'Leary calling the defense down.
00:10:06I saw one time they brought Derwin James off the slot, and the Cardinals were able to pick it up.
00:10:13That's one guy you've got to clue in on no matter where he is on the field.
00:10:16Love the back.
00:10:17Three tight ends.
00:10:20It's first and goal.
00:10:25Wilson on the move.
00:10:27Love gets the call.
00:10:28Burrows his way inside the five, near the four.

00:10:37Well, this offense, you liked it.
00:10:39A lot of times it looks like a single back, but you're using multiple players to be that lead blocker.
00:10:44That time the tight end, Higgins, he comes across in motion.
00:10:47Once the ball is snapped, he's leading that through the interior part of the offensive line.
00:10:52You'll see it on both sides of the ball in terms of the run game getting a lead blocker in
00:10:55there.
00:10:56The normal right guard, Isaiah Adams out, injured a knee three weeks ago.
00:11:00John Gaines making the start at that right guard.

00:11:05Opening drive of the game, Love.
00:11:07Got a block from Johnson outside.

00:11:11Oh, what a drive.
00:11:13And what a run by Love.
00:11:15And the Cardinals have started off the season on a five-yard touchdown run by what they think might be
00:11:22the face of their future.
00:11:24Well, at 212 pounds, he shows the reason and the speed of the ability to get around the outside.
00:11:30This is supposed to go inside.
00:11:32He uses his eyes and vision, but then he has the talent and the speed.
00:11:36He's got Hart one-on-one on the outside.
00:11:38Hart's 207.
00:11:39And Love threw him away as he crossed the goal line.
00:11:42There's your Doak Walker winner, the number one running back in college football a year ago.
00:11:47Weiland with the extra point with ease.
00:11:50And it goes in.
00:11:51And a 7-0 lead for the Cardinals.
00:11:55McBride caught one for 27.
00:11:57And then Brissette ran one for 10.
00:11:59And then Jeremiah Love out of Notre Dame.

00:12:08Trent, last season, the Cardinals were last in the NFL in rushing attempts.
00:12:13About 22 a game.
00:12:14Seven of those 11 plays were on the ground to begin the season.
00:12:18Well, they were at or near the bottom in nearly every rushing category.
00:12:21They didn't rush it very often.
00:12:23They didn't rush it very well.
00:12:24Yards per attempt, yards per carry.
00:12:26All those things go into why they got Jeremiah Love.
00:12:29And what a heck of an opening job using that run game.
00:12:33Keaton Mitchell taking off.

00:12:38So here is quarterback Justin Herbert.
00:12:42Who was pressured a lot last year because of all kinds of problems on the offensive line.
00:12:46Now the line is healthy.
00:12:47A lot of injuries on the offensive line.
00:12:49He was sacked 54 times.
00:12:50He was beat up.
00:12:51He was hit.
00:12:52He was knocked to the ground.
00:12:53He was able to stand in there.
00:12:55But not the types of numbers we're used to seeing.
00:12:57Change at offensive coordinator.
00:12:59A lot has been made about Mike McDaniel and the offense he's going to bring in.
00:13:02This is the opportunity to see it.
00:13:04Second-year running back.
00:13:05Mario Hampton is the back.
00:13:07And the offset eye.
00:13:08The pitch out on first and ten.
00:13:09Looking for an in-goal block.
00:13:10And he carves his way to the 25.
00:13:13And he's brought down by Roy Lopez on a gain of a couple.

00:13:18On the Charger offense.
00:13:20And guys, you've got circle.
00:13:21Yeah, you brought up that offensive line, Kevin.
00:13:24And Rashawn Slater, he's getting the opportunity to come back in after missing all of last season with the knee
00:13:29injury.
00:13:30Alt missed a number of games, 11 games because of that ankle.
00:13:32And then we talked about the rookie, Jack Slaughter.
00:13:35He's getting a chance there to start at center right in the middle of the line.

00:14:45And expect more of it from the Chargers as well.

00:18:54Trent Green to tie the game at seven.
00:18:56Well, normally to start off a season,
00:18:59the offenses are the ones that are a little bit slow
00:19:01because of the preseason reps and snaps.
00:19:04And the defenses usually have the advantage.
00:19:06But both of these teams coming out firing on offense.
00:19:09It's Duvenay with the return.
00:19:12And then hit on the play by Troy Dye.

00:19:16Speaking of defenses, guys, last month,
00:19:18Chargers linebacker and childhood L.A. native Deion Henley
00:19:21served as an honorary captain for Palisades High School's first home football game
00:19:25since the devastating 2025 California wildfires against his alma mater, Crenshaw High.
00:19:31Henley said I was honored to not only be an honorary captain,
00:19:34but also to have my school play against them in the same game,
00:19:37to have both of my communities in that moment to show it's united.

00:19:54He was getting the block from Bourne and crawls his way for maybe a yard.
00:19:58Not much there among the guys on him.
00:20:00But Dalvin Tomlinson, a former Cardinal, second down and nine.
00:20:05And, Kevin, I know I wanted to, if you take a look here at the opening drives,
00:20:0970 yards and 77 yards, both of them resulting in touchdowns.
00:20:13But I know I talked about the motions, both these teams using motions.
00:20:16A year ago, the Cardinals were last in the NFL, only using motion pre-snap 21% of the time.
00:20:22That opening drive, six of the 11 plays, so over 50% they had motion in their plays.

00:20:46It's because all you're trying to do is give any kind of indecision to the defense.
00:20:51Make them hesitate just a little bit.
00:20:53Make them be confused from a coverage or an adjustment or a blitz standpoint
00:20:56based on movements and shifts and motions that go on.
00:21:00So, why you do it as much as you do is you're just trying to cause a slight hesitation,
00:21:03which could give you the advantage on the play.
