24:10That year, Asahara pulled off a major coup.
24:14Persistent and cunning, he managed to obtain an audience with the Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
24:21From that day on, he claimed to be on a spiritual mission.
24:25And no small mission either, saving Buddhism in Japan, no less.
24:32The Dalai Lama has consistently denied entrusting Asahara with any mission whatsoever.
24:40Asahara's followers believed it, though, and Om Supreme Truth was created.
24:47Asahara was now a guru.
24:49Soon, he would become a god.

28:31The young Howell settled easily into the community and was well-liked.
28:37He was a young, good-looking man.

28:44Vernon Howell had become the fair-haired boy.
28:47He wasn't a leader yet, but he had everything it would take to become one.
28:51He was very charismatic.
28:52He was a nice individual.
28:55He seemed to show genuine compassion and concern for people.

30:21In 1984, David Koresh married Rachel.
30:25She was 14 years old, and one year later, she gave him his first son.
30:31In the name of God, Koresh took one wife after another, building up a veritable harem.
30:37If a girl was reluctant, he was very persuasive.
30:41He started telling me about the wives and trying to convince me to become a wife.
30:48And because there was food deprivation, in fact, I was hardly eating anything at all.
30:54He would only let me eat apples.
30:58And because of lack of sleep, you know, after a while, it can be everything sounds right, you know.
31:06So I did become one of his wives.
31:08I was number four.
31:12In all, Koresh married close to 20 women, aged between 12 and 20.
31:17Better still, in 1991, he simply declared that since he was God, all women in creation were his wives.
31:28During the Waco siege in 1993, Koresh vaunted his polygamy in this video made by the Davidians, presenting a few
31:35of his wives and some of his 22 children.
31:38All of them would die with their father on April 19, 1993.
31:50The young girls in the community were all conditioned from an early age to become the prophet's wives.
31:56From the age of 10, they were invited to share his bed.
32:01I had been trained since I was so little that it didn't really bother me that much.
32:06It kind of made me nervous sometimes, thinking, geez, you know, when?
32:17It only happened once.
32:19He just, like, told me to lay down and started, like, doing things, you know.
32:25And he didn't actually have sex with me, but just enough that it was definitely wrong.
32:37I mean, he came very close to having sex with me.
32:40So, and then he just told me to go take a shower, and he came, and I did, and I
32:46was just really nervous and scared and miserable.
32:49If he decided he wanted you, in the middle of the day, he'd take you to a room, you'd go
32:56do your thing, and afterwards, you got up and you left.
33:01When he, when he talked about sex with, you know, with the women, he used words like take, or submit.
33:09You know, like he would say, so-and-so, so-and-so submitted to me last night.
33:15I think the, the main pleasure was for him to have the power over, over the woman.
33:22And he used to say over and over again, you know, I'm the best.
33:25God has, has said I'm the best.
33:28He used to talk about that all the time.
33:32He used to brag about.
33:38He was an addict.
33:40And so, you know, what better way to come by euphoria and adrenaline than having sex?
33:45And what better to get euphoria and adrenaline than having sex with different?
33:59I mean, he was often a lot, you know, men and women.
34:02My father was clearly bisexual, but really tormented by the fact that he was bisexual.
34:10But it was pervasive.
34:11I mean, sex was constantly talked about.
34:13No one else was to be having it, and he was constantly having it.
34:16And I mean, I walked in on him countless times with women and men, and it was definitely a tool,
34:23but it was also more than anything, a source for his addict.

34:36He took advantage of his position to split up couples with the pretense of forming new cosmic couples.

34:46It broke up family units and provided Di Mambro with new mistresses.

36:53It's no coincidence that all four cult leaders admired the great dictators.

38:11that was not under his direct control.
38:14People who survived said it was a concentration camp.

38:25Then he'd say, eat it.
38:27The guy would eat it.
38:27He was the dictator.
38:29What he said went.
38:30What he said everybody did.

38:34In dictatorship, there is no choice.

38:38And that's how it was in the People's Temple.
38:39There were meetings where guns were pulled out.
38:45I had a gun pointed at me,
38:47and a woman say personally that she would kill me
38:49if I ever left.
38:50He used to say that those who went against him,
38:53he would kill.
38:55I left with possibly the knowledge of being killed
38:59because at that point I decided I would rather be dead
39:02than to live the rest of my life this way.
