36:00That same night, 150 km away but still in Switzerland, 23 members of the Order of the
36:07Solar Temple were shot to death in another chalet belonging to the cult. These victims
36:13were considered as traitors and thus deserved a violent death.
36:20A fire was to have eliminated all the evidence but the system malfunctioned and
36:25the bullet riddled bodies were discovered. The death toll of that one
36:31tragic night, 48 dead and it wasn't over yet.
36:52On December 15, 1995, 14 months after the first transit, a few miles from Saint-Pierre-de-Charennes in the
37:00Vercourt Hills of France, a group of Order of the Solar Temple followers were
37:05brought together in the middle of the night, all having received a mysterious
37:08telephone call. The message given was perhaps similar to that in the cult's
37:20testament.
37:41The message was enticing, the reality tragic. Sixteen people, including three children, were
37:50shot dead and laid out in a circle around a fire. The second order of the Solar Temple
37:57transit had just taken place. It would be followed by a third in March 1997 in Quebec, with five
38:06more victims. To date, a total of 76 people have been murdered or have killed themselves.
38:14There may yet be more, for nothing or no one can prevent further transits to
38:19Sirius. And at the latest count, the Order of the Solar Temple had 565 members.
38:31Guiana, 1978, November 16. On the right of the picture is Senator Leo Ryan. He has come from California
38:41with the press to visit Jonestown, a commune established in the Virgin Forest, where American
38:46citizens are allegedly being held against their will in great despair.
38:52Nobody had, no one had a positive attitude about the future, I guess I should say, of what was going
38:57to happen
38:58because all he talked about was death, suicide, dying, and this is the way we're going to take out of
39:04here.
39:05We're going to make a statement.
39:09Jim Jones had no choice. He had to meet the congressman, and worse, the press.
39:16The visit was planned down to the last detail.
39:20And he said, now Congressman Leo Ryan's coming, so for three weeks, every night they'd have a meeting,
39:25and you would be told what to say, you would be questioned, he would put the questions to you,
39:31and maybe that Leo Ryan or one of the newsmen would ask you, and to see how you would answer
39:37it.
39:37And he said, everybody has to be happy. You've got to have a smile on your face.
39:40You've got to tell them you love it over here if you're asked.
39:43You've got to tell them everything's fine, and you wouldn't go back to the United States for nothing.
39:50Late morning on November 16th, Ryan and his colleagues, the group of journalists, and a TV crew,
39:56arrived at the airstrip at Kaituma, about an hour's drive from Jonestown,
40:01which they reached in the early afternoon.
40:07The initial contact was promising.
40:10The village looked clean and well-kept.
40:13The inhabitants, happy.
40:15And the atmosphere, warm, almost childlike.
40:23Even the journalists' first questions did not break the spell.
40:27Are you happy here?
40:28Oh, I should say I am. I've never been any happier in my life.
40:31You want to stay?
40:33Definitely.
40:34I'm very happy here. It's the best place I've ever been.
40:37And you?
40:38I wouldn't want to leave here because I have, you know, it's really nice here.
40:42I've, you know, got a good education here.
40:44I've got a lot of friends here. I like it here a lot.
40:50A huge party was organized that night in honor of the guests, with food and wine, singing and dancing.
40:58The stage setting was almost perfect, even if the master of ceremonies himself appeared a little tense.
41:25At that moment, it was very hard to imagine that in 36 hours, almost every one of these people would
41:30be dead.
41:42The media still harbored some doubts, but Senator Ryan seemed completely convinced.
41:51Very glad to be here. This is a congressional inquiry.
41:54I think that all of you know that I'm here to find out more about questions that have been raised
41:58about your operation here.
41:59But I can tell you right now that from a few conversations I've had with some of the folks here
42:03already this evening,
42:04that whatever the comments are, there are some people here who believe that this is the best thing that ever
42:09happened in their whole life.
42:17The tide turned on November 18th as the visitors prepared to leave. The TV crew had received a note.
42:23Last night, someone came and passed me this note.
42:31Well, that's who we're talking about. He wants to leave his son here.
42:34If Jones sounds such a bad place, why does he want to leave his son here?
42:37The people play games, friend. They lie, they lie. What can I do about liars?
42:42Are you people going to leave us? I just beg you, please leave us.
42:47Bill, we will bother nobody. Anybody wants to get out of here can get out of here.
42:52In all, 11 people asked to leave, including the family of Jerry Ferre.
42:57He asked Senator Ryan for help, despite pressure from Jones.
43:02We've been held prisoner there for seven and a half months.
43:07And about that time, Jim Jones walks up and says, please don't go home with them.
43:14Now, he said, wait for a week or two. He says, I'll give you your passports.
43:17I'll give you $5,000 if you don't leave with these people.
43:23Jerry, like the others, refused to give in, out of courage or fear.
43:29They were all too aware of the treatment reserved for deserters.
43:54For all of them, this departure was their last chance.
43:58For Jim Jones, their leaving could have disastrous consequences.
44:04He walks over, sits down on the bench, and just sets her in a stoop position with a dejected look
44:12on his face.
44:13And I'll never forget it. I can still see it.
44:16I thought, for the first time, he's a beaten man.
44:19He's got nowhere to turn, nowhere to go.
44:25A few minutes later, Jerry, his family, and the others left Jonestown.
44:30Bonnie Simon, Bonnie Simon, please come to the radio room.
44:39And headed for the waiting planes at Kaituma Airport.
44:48As they boarded, the tension eased.
44:51The danger seemed to have passed.
44:53But then, all hell broke loose.
44:56Concealed in a tractor trailer, men from the cult suddenly opened fire.
45:02I had just sit down in my seat and fastened the seat buckle.
45:07I hear my mom, they start firing at us.
45:14As they start firing and the bullets start flying around, I bend over.
45:19I'm trying to get my seat belt off.
45:21And I can't get it unhooked for some reason.
45:25And I finally get it.
45:27I hear my mom scream, look at Patty, which is my wife.
45:31I turn back and look.
45:32And the whole top part of her head's gone.
45:37Senator Ryan was killed instantly, as were several journalists.
45:40In all, 11 people were killed and four wounded.
45:44For Jim Jones, the point of no return had finally been crossed.
45:49About the same time this was taking place in Jonestown, they started a suicide thing.
45:54The congressman was dead.
45:56You know, he knew he was going, he was going down.
46:00You know, he was lost.
46:03I imagine the depth of his despair and hopelessness was something that few people can imagine.
46:14The weather grew dark and the wind kicked up.
46:19And there was, you know, of course, fear.
46:22I mean, real fear of what, of the outside world.
46:26And I'm sure many perceived a threat against them.
46:31And that people were going to come and take them away and be separated from their children.
46:34And that some believed what my father, especially right at that moment,
46:37because they were so broken and so weakened psychically, psychologically, you know.
46:45Mid-afternoon on November 18th, Jim Jones gathered all the followers under the central pavilion
46:50and ordered a revolutionary suicide.
46:53A great punch laced with cyanide was passed round.
46:57Those who tried to resist were injected with poison, as were the babies.
47:01The babies were the first victims.
47:04The children were to die first, okay.
47:07So now you've got a baby dying on the floor there in front of you.
47:15And so I can't imagine what it would be like to see that baby die, you know.
47:19And then, so how do you run out on that baby?
47:23How do you, how do you, how do you leave that baby behind?
47:28So I don't believe that it was because Jim Jones says now it's time to die, you know,
47:33what Jim Jones says I do.
47:35I don't believe that for a minute.
47:36And I believe there were people there that did that.
47:38You know, and listen, I don't know how many, I believe you know that people were killed.
47:42It was squirted down their throats.
47:44It certainly was.
47:45There wasn't one baby that stood lined up and said, yeah, let me die, you know.
47:50So, you know, when 200 babies die, could you watch 200 babies die and walk away?
48:10I would suspect die with a degree of dignity.
48:14Lay down your life with dignity.
48:18Please, stop this hysteric.
48:23No way for us to die.
48:24We must die with some dignity.
48:26Please, for God's sake, let's get on with it.
48:28We've lived.
48:29Let's just be done with it.
48:30Let's be done with the agony of it.
48:35Let's get calm, let's get calm.
48:40How many screams are here, I don't care.
48:42How many anguished cries?
48:43Death is a million times terrible to ten more days of this life.

50:12Above Jim Jones' throne in Jonestown,
50:16hung a quote by George Santayana that said,
50:21those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
50:28And if we don't remember the past and we don't believe that we're vulnerable to cults
50:37and we don't learn what the red flags are that indicate a cult,
50:42we face exactly what the denizens of Jonestown faced.
50:47We face the possibility of repeating the past because we don't learn from it.
