The Nuclear Bomb That Fell Into the Ocean

America once lost a nuclear bomb… and never found it.
On February 5, 1958, a B-47 bomber collided with an F-86 fighter over Georgia. Onboard was a 7,600-pound Mark 15 thermonuclear bomb. Afraid the damaged plane might not survive landing, the crew jettisoned the weapon into the waters near Tybee Island.
The military searched for weeks. Ships. Divers. Sonar. Then they stopped.
The bomb was officially declared “irretrievably lost.”
Decades later, people looked again. It still wasn’t recovered. Officials said the safest option was to leave it where it was.
Somewhere off the Georgia coast, a Cold War-era bomb may still be buried in the mud.
