In 1944, 11 German weather-station men were dropped on Svalbard for Operation Haudegen. In May 1945 they heard the war was over. No ship came. They waited through the Arctic summer, then formally surrendered on 4 September 1945 — over dinner — by sliding a pistol across the table. Last German unit of WWII in Europe to give up.
