We lost a nuclear bomb 68 years ago and still can't find it.
Transcript
00:00We like to think that things like nuclear weapons are so important that they wouldn't
00:04go missing. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. Throughout history, the United States
00:09alone has lost a few dozen nuclear weapons. Most were eventually recovered or destroyed,
00:16but a few, three specifically, never were recovered. Perhaps the most spectacular case
00:22occurred in 1958, just off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. At about 3.30 a.m., a U.S. training
00:28mission involving a B-47 bomber and a F-86 Sabre jet, got into a mid-air collision, and unfortunately,
00:38the bomber was so damaged that despite repeated attempts to land it at a nearby Air Force base,
00:44the pilot was eventually forced to jettison the bomb because landing it safely would have
00:50been impossible. Well, the pilots all made it. They were fine, but the bomb itself remains
00:56to this day below the water, just off of Tybee Island, Georgia.
00:59Here's the first one.
01:00Good job.
