More people died on this ship than on the Titanic — almost six times more.
January 1945. The Wilhelm Gustloff left East Prussia packed with refugees: women, children, wounded soldiers. In the freezing Baltic, Soviet submarine S-13 fired three torpedoes. All three hit. The ship was gone in about an hour. Around 9,000 people died.
So why do we remember the Titanic… and almost never this?
Because it happened in a war. History kept the battles. Not the people caught between them.
