00:15Very excited to have Kenny and Andrea on the show today.
00:17I met these folks a couple years back at a van meetup and they're in the process
00:21of building his Ford Transit camper van. Well now it's done, they're going to give
00:25us a full tour inside and out. We're going to start with Kenny on the outside,
00:29meet back up with Andrea for the inside for storage and decor and Kenny again for all the systems.
00:34So join us. Hi Patrick, thank you for having us on your channel.
00:39This is our 2019 Ford Transit van. One of the first things we did was put on these Luminous side
00:48rails.
00:48They are super light, maybe 17 pounds for the pair. A bit costly but very very secure.
00:58This is a two-wheel drive van. It is the regular Ford six-cylinder engine, no EcoBoost.
01:07And because it's only two-wheel drive and we're skiers, we needed to convert it to four-wheel drive.
01:12So we went with the Quigley conversion and Quigley did the four-wheel drive conversion.
01:17They added a rear differential. They added Bielstein shocks and struts to compensate for the extra weight in
01:26the van. I also went with the aluminum bumper and the rigid spot and fog lights and it just gives
01:35the
01:35van such a look. And it's definitely a beefy muscle car type van. On the roof, we have two 200
01:46watt solar
01:47panels. We have our Maxair fan. Also, we have a Travelfy router. I bought the router and I fashioned the
01:55box
01:55to mount it. And then in the front, we have a wood deck. And we do time lapses up there.
02:04We have coffee up there. It's really nice. So as far as the roof rack itself, we went with the
02:11Flatline Van
02:11Company, which is amazing. Very light. We went the Flatline Van Company ladder, which thank goodness,
02:20it fit with the Illumina side rails. One of the biggest things that gives this van such an amazing
02:27ride because we are mainly on the highway is these Continental all-terrain tires. You know, they're
02:34meant to be on road 90%, but when we're off road, they are absolutely amazing. So under here, we have
02:44our
02:44kitchen and our bathroom here. Under here, we have a 20 gallon gray tank. I kind of fashioned the bracket.
02:52It sits very up. It was made specifically for the Ford Transit. So it sits in the frame and it's
02:59amazing.
02:59You cannot even see it from the side. And we have the electric ball valve hooked up to the gray
03:06tank as
03:07well. So as far as windows in the kitchen, we have an 18 by 24 window. I think got it
03:13from Amazon.
03:14But it's very, very solid window. Back here, we have the CR Lawrence. I believe they're 10 by 33.
03:23We didn't want to go too big with the windows for insulation purposes. We ski a lot, a lot of
03:29condensation. So, so these are, these are absolutely perfect. Here we have our water fill, gravity fill,
03:39and we have a city fill. Also, we don't really use this city fill, but we do have it. Here
03:45I have a
03:46vent. In the summertime, we use a EcoFlow Wave 3 air conditioner and we vent the exhaust heat out here.
03:55So that's very, very important. One of our most recent additions, the Flatline Van Company rear door
04:03storage storage. So we have the rear door tire carrier. We have our spare tire. We have this
04:09Himal bag, which serves to hold our mats for camping. And we also keep our garbage in here when we're
04:17off
04:17grid. Right here, we have our Flatline Van Company storage platform and rear storage box. This, once again,
04:28one of our most amazing additions, this is where we keep a lot of our camping stuff and I keep
04:34my tools
04:36and cables as well. All right. So back of the van, what we call our garage. As far as the
04:52doors, we did
04:53insulate inside the door. We also put soundproofing on the metal of the doors and covered it with auto
05:00fabric just so we don't have that cold metal exposed to the inside of the van. We went with the
05:08Steltec
05:08window covers and we've had these for, I guess, about four years now and they are absolutely amazing.
05:18So the garage, depending on what type of time of year it is, depends on what is back here.
05:23We do usually keep our skateboard for a little bit of easy transportation. If we're at a campground,
05:30we have to go a mile, could just take the skateboard. We have our yoga mats. The floor of the
05:38van is
05:39basically continuous throughout. We have like a layer of vinyl to protect the actual floor.
05:46So I built this here because in the summer we have an EcoFlow Wave 3 air conditioner here,
05:54which there are amazing. So we just vent the heat out there and then we
06:00basically put a hose here and the cold air gets blown right into our sleeping area, which is right
06:09here. So on top of this, I put an EcoFlow Delta Pro, which weighs about a hundred pounds. So I
06:16put two
06:16metal bars in between this to hold the actual weight of the EcoFlow Delta Pro. We use the Moonshade
06:24for, this is the Moonshade XL, I believe. And we use this for an awning. We did not want a
06:30permanent
06:31awning on the side of the van. It just takes up too much space. It might, you know, mess with
06:37the
06:37aerodynamics of the van. It's just something we didn't use enough to keep on the outside. Back here,
06:43we have our, we have our fuse box and our circuit board. You know, everything's on its own fuse. We
06:53have about five outlets throughout the van. All of our outlets have two normal 120 volt, 120 volt outlets,
07:02and they also have USB A and C. Here we have lights that I kind of fashioned. I really wasn't
07:11sure how
07:11I was going to put lights up there. So I wound up doing that. Our bed is right above this.
07:16So I used
07:17a few, I used a few Oak one by twos to support the weight of this piece right here. And
07:23it's super,
07:24super strong. We have all of our electrical behind this wall right here. So we actually have two fans,
07:31one that sucks air in and this sucks air out of the computer area. Now this leads to under our
07:39bed.
07:39This was closed. Our lagoon mount is basically behind here. And what we did was cut spaces so we
07:49could access underneath the bed storage underneath the bed here. We have a extra little eco flow.
07:56All right. We have a whole separate battery system back here, but we keep an extra eco flow
08:02for extra power when we need it. Here we have a projector screen. If I could pull it down. There
08:12we go.
08:13So when we're camping, we put out a few chairs, get some popcorn and watch a little video on the
08:20projector screen. So up here, we have a bug wall. You need a screen when camping at night,
08:29the lights in the van attract more bugs than you could ever imagine. You know,
08:35when we designed the layout of this van, it was super important for us to have this space back here
08:41to be able to lay in bed and, and be staring out at the ocean, staring out at, at the
08:48forest.
08:49It was just very important. That's why it's, it's okay. Our windows are not that big because
08:55usually we have these, these doors open. All right. So a couple more things about the garage area.
09:01We actually have access to our water tank back here. So if I want to drain the water tank,
09:11I could do it basically from right here. If I need to work on anything, change the water filter.
09:16I could for here as well. And here we have some storage for anything like poles, umbrellas,
09:23store, uh, some, some longer items. We also,
09:30we also right here, we don't use it very much, but we have an outdoor shower
09:35and all of the components for our water system are going to be behind this wall right here. All right.
09:48All right. So on this side, we have our shore power inlet, 30 amp shore power inlet,
09:55which we use fairly often. Um, and we have another CR Lawrence 10 by 33 window. Okay. So why don't
10:04we go
10:04inside and see Andrea and she can give us a tour of the, uh, the interior. Hey Patrick, welcome to
10:11our
10:11comfy cozy cabin. Come on in. I'll give you a lay of the lands over here. We have our kitchen.
10:18Um,
10:19over here, we have our shower, bathroom, toilet, dining area in the back and some counter space
10:26with some drawers and things on the bottom. So over here we have a bug wall. Um, obviously don't need
10:34it now, not too many bugs, but underneath we have a dog gate that we use to keep our dog
10:42safe over here.
10:43We have a dog camera in case we have to leave her in the van, which we never really do,
10:48but, um, we have two hooks over here, usually leashes or whatever you need a little jacket over
10:55there. Um, I think you can't have enough hooks in a van. So we have two more hooks over here,
11:02one over here. This is our infamous pizza oven. Um, it stores all of our window coverings. Um,
11:10I also have flashlight in here. This is a tiny single burn propane or stove that if I need an
11:16extra
11:16burner, I just put it on the counter over here and we can have an extra burner to cook with.
11:22This is a, an extra part privacy curtain that we have, um, just in case you want a little extra
11:28privacy. We have our swivel seat over here, which is where I have my coffee every morning,
11:33put my feet up. Nice. It's like I'm on my couch at home, got my coffee over here and, um,
11:39um, I get to look at the window. So it's really nice. Um, we actually installed two lights over
11:45here that dim so that if I get up super early and everybody's still sleeping, I could just keep them
11:51nice and low, not wake up every, everybody in the house and over here. So this is the kitchen area.
11:59Um,
11:59this is, this is my completely my space. Um, we have all snacks in here. It goes all the way
12:08back to the
12:09right. Um, so we fit a ton of stuff back there. Um, I made the, all the cabinet faces. Um,
12:16I like
12:17the barn door style. So we kind of used some old pieces of scrap wood that we had, um, that
12:23looked like
12:23that. And I just sanded the heck out of them and we used wood glue and put them all together.
12:32And then under here we have two more lights, um, little thermometer that, that is kind of like an
12:39old style thermometer. And I think it gives it a little character spice rack necessity. Um, over here
12:47we have this wall to separate the driver's seat from the kitchen, um, and a little window back here
12:57sliding, uh, slides over, which I love cause when I'm washing dishes over here, I get to like look
13:02out the window and feel like I'm at home. Um, over here we have a little control panel. This is
13:08for our
13:09hot water. We turn that on when we use the shower, we have some outlets over here. They, and there's
13:15two
13:15USB and one USB C. Um, and this is, this is a little cover for the sink. Um, we don't
13:23usually use it, but
13:24nice deep sink. I could wash pots, no problem. Um, hot water, cold water. It's got a little spout,
13:34you know, move it around. And, um, over here we have, um, an induction stove that is on a pullout
13:44draw slide. I actually, when I cook on it, I actually cook it right on this, on the draw slide,
13:48which is great because it doesn't take up counter space. So I could have this burner going and my
13:54little propane tank, my little propane stove over here cooking two things at one time and then
14:01stow it away and it doesn't take up any more space. So this is our pullout fridge freezer combo.
14:10So it was super important for me to have a ton of space for the fridge and the freezer. So
14:15if you
14:16look in here, I mean, like I have a whole half gallon of milk and it doesn't even look like
14:20anything's
14:20in there. We fit tons of stuff. We could fit food for several days. Um, plenty of room in there.
14:27But
14:28what's great about this is that we have just as big of a freezer. Like I have, I have gallons
14:34of ice
14:34cream. I have ice cube trays underneath. I have, um, about 15 hamburger patties for my dog. I make
14:43fresh dog food for her. She's a little spoiled. Um, and when we travel, if we're gone for like
14:49a couple of weeks, I need to bring, I bring like two patties each day and there's her food and,
14:55uh,
14:55and she's set to go. And then this is, um, so this is, we have a rug on top of
15:02the floor. Um,
15:03I like the feel of a rug. We just bring a vacuum that we vacuum like every day, but underneath
15:09the
15:10floor, we have, um, kind of like a linoleum wood floor look to it. And originally we were going to
15:17leave
15:17it, but after using the van, you kind of realize like, okay, this isn't working for me. I'm a slipper
15:23girl. I like to wear slippers and be comfy, feel like I'm in my own house. Um, so the wood
15:27floor
15:28wasn't working for me anyway. Um, we have the ceiling, which Ken and I, um, put together.
15:35Uh, it was probably the hardest thing that we did in the van. Um, we had actually these tongue and
15:41groove cedar planks that we had to heat with a heat gun so that we could bend them, um, and
15:48kind of like
15:48frame out the ceiling. Um, and we put the lights in. So we have, um, over here we have max
15:56air fan,
15:57which is right next to the bathroom, which is perfect. So here's our shower and toilet. So
16:06easy. If we take a shower, we just put the toilet on the side for the door. We chose a
16:11nautilus shower
16:12door self cleaning. We painted all the walls with marine grade, um, paint and behind it. It's kill matted.
16:20So everything is, um, pretty waterproof. Um, on the bottom, we have our shower pan that just drains
16:28right into our gray tank. Um, over here, I just put some sticker tiles. They're not actual tiles,
16:35but they look nice. I think, um, over here, we made this cubby and we kind of built it into
16:42the van
16:42so that it wouldn't take up any extra space. And that's where we keep all of our toiletries.
16:47And then over here, again, we built into the van so that we would have extra elbow room while you're
16:52taking a shower because you need to, you need to move around. Um, and we have tons of hooks. Like
16:58I
16:58said, can't have enough hooks. We have four over here and then we also have four on the other side.
17:03And, um, which is great for skiing. Cause you always need to hang up your wet clothes.
17:08We left this space, um, just for ventilation so that when you're taking a shower, the steam comes
17:14right out of there. We put the max air fan on and it goes right out of the, right out
17:18of the van.
17:19And this is our extra counter space with, um, drawers on the bottom. So usually when I'm cooking,
17:25this is like the area where I'm cooking, cutting up vegetables. We have these two little pockets where
17:30we keep a couple of dog toys and various things. And, um, we built this from scratch, all the drawers.
17:40So there are two top junk drawers, one for me, one for him.
17:46This is where we keep like our silverware plates over here. We have some extra cups, utensils. I mean,
17:55there's really like plenty of storage space. This is a much deeper drawer. The two bottom drawers are
18:00super deep. So this fits honestly, I have like pots to two different frying pans and extra coffee
18:08in case we need to make case we run out. And then over here, um, we were originally going to,
18:14um, design
18:16a pullout pantry, but we figured that we would be losing too much space. So we just kind of left
18:21it as
18:21as on the top. I have like aluminum foil, um, different things here, some cleaning items on the
18:27bottom, more toiletries. And, um, this is just our electronics draw. Um, over here, this is the dog draw.
18:38We have our little snackies in there. And in here we have like oil, canned goods, jelly, peanut butter,
18:45that kind of thing. Um, and the only drawers that actually need latches because we use
18:52super strong magnets on the, on these, the top ones are the two bottom ones because they're deep.
18:57So we just did these old school latches and then we have another identical cabinet over here.
19:05And on the top we keep, oh, I have a blender back there here. We have like tons of towels,
19:11propane tank for here on the bottom. And then over here, um, we realized after a while we needed a
19:18mirror. So we put up a mirror, um, and just did, you know, hung a couple of little signs. Um,
19:25this is
19:25a, this measures like humidity. We always follow, you know, keep, keep an eye on that and temperature,
19:33especially when the dog's in the van and we want to make sure that she's not overheating. And this is
19:39our coffee cabinet. So I, I mean, we fit tons of coffee, coffee pot, French press, the French press
19:46girl. And then over here we just have, um, this is like we use for a charging station. So this
19:52is my
19:53little cochlear implant charger. And just over here, this is our control panel and underneath. Oh, this
20:01is the dog. This is the step for the dog to get on the bed because it's high. And back
20:08here we have
20:10our water tank, 20, uh, 25 gallon water tank over there. This is our dinette area. I mean, normally we
20:18set this up as a bed, but we haven't, we just wanted to kind of show you guys that we
20:24have the option to
20:25sit at a dinner table and actually have dinner. Um, we were super conscious about the size of these
20:34cabinets, these, these overhead storage areas. So this is where I keep all of my clothes and that's
20:40where Ken keeps all of his clothes. Um, when we designed this, we were originally going to make
20:45these sections much bigger, but we decided to trim it down so that we had enough headroom and that it
20:53didn't like take over the van. And then on this side, this is, we have another little dog camera
20:59over here and this is my little nook. I have a little cup holder for my coffee. I have, um,
21:08this little cabinet where I just keep like hair things and some extra chargers. And I put little
21:14things over there, but I have scrunchies under here. Sometimes I put my phone over here when I'm
21:19charging it. Um, what's great is that we have these two, these two fans were like priceless,
21:26these 360 swivel. There's one on each side. Um, and they really help to keep you cool.
21:34And this is, um, a nightlight. We each have one of these two and you can move it around in
21:41case the
21:41other person's sleeping. There's also, um, you could charge your phone attached to it. Um,
21:50and over here we have a flat screen TV. We have wifi so that we could watch TV 24 seven
21:57and, uh,
21:59and really feel like you're at home because that's what makes a big difference.
22:04Patrick. All right. Well, uh, let me give you a rundown on some of the systems.
22:10So for electric, we have 500 amp hours, lithium ion. We have five battle born batteries. I think
22:20it's a total of 6,000 watt hours. We have a 3000 watt Victron inverter. We have the DC to
22:28DC charger,
22:29and then we have our solar charge controller coming in. Uh, for wiring, we all, we used all marine grade
22:38wiring, which means the wires are actually covered in a sheath. Everything is in this bench
22:48right here. I suggest anyone who's doing electrical for the first time, look into Nate from Explorers Life.
22:56He sells amazing diagrams. Without his diagram, I do not think I would have been able to do this.
23:03I actually made a model of this on science fair project board with shoe boxes. And as you can see,
23:11all the wiring here has the white sheath over it. So it's marine coated because there's a lot of movement
23:16in the vans and the wires over time can get worn down. Um, another thing we put is these little
23:24fire extinguishers
23:25right there. Okay. If, if that experiences heat above 160 degrees, it'll explode with a white powder
23:33and it will extinguish any fire. In the electrical box, we have a fan that sucks cool air in
23:43and then a fan that sucks the warmer air out on the other side. All right. So here are some
23:50various light
23:51switches. This is our main dimmer switch for the light in the dining area. This is for the cab
24:03and this is for the kitchen right here. This is our controller for our inverter. So if we want to
24:10use
24:10any of the outlets, we just flip this on. Here's a control for a Webasto heater. We mainly use a
24:17buddy
24:18heater. Webasto heater installation is in process right now. Here's the monitor. Monitor is a percentage
24:25of how much battery we have left. And then here's just a few various lights for switches. As far as
24:34internet, what we use is a travel fi router, which we have back here. Okay. Travel fi basically taps into
24:45the cellular networks of, I believe it's Verizon T-Mobile and AT&T. So whichever is closest, that's what it,
24:56uh, that's the signal it grabs. We do have a travel fi router, um, antenna on the roof, which I
25:02fabricated
25:02a little box for, and it's excellent. We have the TV on watching YouTube, um, pretty much all the time.
25:11Awesome. This is, uh, this is pretty impressive. I seen this in process, what, a few years ago? Yes. At,
25:18uh,
25:18one of our van meetups. And, uh, you were telling me all the plans and I'm glad to see it
25:24all come
25:24together. Off camera, we spoke a little bit about, you know, your original design. You did a cardboard
25:31mockup. Yes. And tell us your experience with that. You want to talk about that? Well, like we were
25:38originally going to make the cabinets so much bigger. We were going to have these come out
25:43this far, these top cabinets and even the coffee cabinet. I mean, we, we were just so concerned
25:49with having enough space for everything. Yeah. And I'm so glad that we used the cardboard boxes to
25:55make a dot, to make a model, a 3d model, because then we realized we just felt like closed in.
26:02So we
26:03limited, um, we, we cut them down, made, didn't make them as wide. And we have, and I'm so glad
26:10we did because we have so much storage space. Like we would never need any more. We've gone last
26:15summer. We went to Colorado. We were gone for like three and a half weeks. And when we had plenty
26:19of
26:19room for all of our clothes, all of our food, all of our storage. Yeah. So, and you want to,
26:24you want to have enough room to move around too. You don't want to be like,
26:27like feel too confined. And it's something we got that idea from George from Humble Road. And I feel
26:33like if we were younger, we may not have taken that extra step because that took a few days to
26:38make the cardboard mock-up and it really changed, you know, how much head space and how open the
26:45van really feels. Yeah. And what's your extent of travel? This van's pretty loaded with all your stuff.
26:51Are you, you're on your way up from a trip back home? We just got back from Florida. A few
26:57weeks
26:57before that we were skiing and Hunter, you know, we have, since we met you like three years ago,
27:03we've taken about 75 trips, you know, everywhere from Maine to Colorado to Florida. Um, you know,
27:14just pretty much anywhere you could possibly go. We just have our home with us at all times. I'm glad
27:19to
27:19see that you're using it. Some people love the build process and building it, but then they don't
27:26actually go out a lot and use it or life gets busy. Something comes up and it gets in the
27:31way.
27:31Yeah. You guys built this and it evolves, right? Things are evolving and you're using it, right?
27:36Now you're going to do a Wobasto, the Buddy Heater. That it's a little bit, this is safer to Wobasto
27:42for your pet and whatnot. Um, so what are your plans next? What are some of the projects and
27:50travels you have coming up? Well, I, we just started using Harvest Hosts. We stayed in a farm in Florida
27:58and it was absolutely amazing. So I think we're going to try to search out a few Harvest Hosts.
28:03We really love staying in state park campgrounds. Um, we stay in North Lake a lot and, you know,
28:11we were talking before about the size of the van. It's, it's the high roof, um, and it's the long
28:17wheelbase, but it's not extended. So because it's not extended, we're able to fit in, uh, tents, tent
28:22camping spots where you need to be under 20 feet because we're right under 20 feet, fit into regular
28:27parking spots. And it's also very nimble on the road, not having that extra three feet and all
28:33that extra weight back there. I love driving the van. I love driving it. It's so comfortable to drive.
28:39Um, you don't feel like it's this colossal vehicle that you have to manage around turns and stuff. So
28:44I love driving that. And you added a lot of Kilmat or the sound thing to this. Yes. So we
28:50added,
28:51you know, we feel everyone goes overboard with some aspect of the van and, uh,
28:56we have 10 boxes of Kilmat where every square inch of the floor, the walls, the ceiling, and now
29:03even the cab is covered by Kilmat. Um, and it's about 17 pounds a box. So it added 170 pounds,
29:10but it was so worth it because it is so quiet on the road. And for two reasons, you know,
29:16it stops the
29:17shell of the van from vibrating, but also when it comes to the build, there's no, there's always a
29:24piece of Kilmat between the metal, uh, of the shell of the van and the wood that we use to
29:30frame
29:30it. So you don't have any metal wood. It's very, very quiet when we are driving on the road. And
29:35it's actually the combination of that and the have like wool. Yes. It's very warm in here. It's
29:53cold. You know, like when you put the air conditioner on in the summer, um, just close
29:57all the doors and it stays cool for awhile. Yeah. I love it. One thing we might change is the
30:02van
30:03is black and we love that for stealth. I know Storyteller Overland just came out with like a
30:09stealthy looking van similar to this, but we might paint it a lighter color because it is very hot in
30:16the summer. And if you can't find shade, it's, uh, yeah. Well, that's a good tip. I guess you could

30:33build and your travels? Yes. Yes. It's, uh, it's outer range vans on Instagram. Um, we haven't posted
30:41too much stuff, but you could really get a, there's really a lot of pictures of the actual steps of
30:45the
30:45build, you know, what we did and we would like to do another build soon and maybe video, you know,
30:53each aspect of, of the build. Well, you know, it's going to happen when you're building that
30:56viewers are going to say, well, what are you going to do with this one? I'll buy it. Possibly, but

31:02we love van life. We love the van life people. You know, I mean, it's, it's, it's amazing. One thing
31:08I
31:08want to mention about the ride of this van, we, when we did the Quigley upgrade that comes with a,
31:13a two inch lift as well. So when you're driving down on 95, a lot of big trucks, you don't
31:19feel
31:19like you're in like this small little vehicle. You feel pretty, uh, it looks pretty beefy. It does.
31:25It does. It's like a muscle van. You could take it on the beach. Oh, absolutely. We have, we have
31:31driven
31:31up ski mountains during a blizzard. Oh yeah. Like foot of snow on a 10 degree slope. The four wheel
31:38drive is
31:39really key. It was, it was an expense, but it was the best thing we've ever done as far as,
31:46you know,
31:47as far as prepping for the build. Definitely. So, well, thank you. You guys did an exceptional job on
