01:13Well I did, I did a bit of hat and dancing but my mum actually, she's got more interesting headwear.
01:18She's a fundraiser for Essex Horse and Pony sanctuary now.
01:21So she's bought herself a horses hat so whenever she does any fundraising she wears this horses thing and she's
01:25tried different horses outfits and horses fancy dress and she's still on the hump for the perfect horse hat slash
01:31horse costume.
01:32So if anyone has any tips?
01:34No, I remember once buying a wolf overcoat when you could actually do that.
01:38Yes, it's very different from horse protection to actually making hats out of horses, that's not where I was going

25:45Well, I'm often asked about the term brass monkeys.
25:49When you say, well, it's brass monkeys, it's very, very cold.
25:51It's a bit parky.
25:53Because there's a very famous story attached to it, which does the rounds every so often.
25:59And the full phrase, and you have to forgive my language here, the full phrase is, it's cold enough to
26:03freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
26:05And the story goes that it's a former naval custom of storing cannonballs on a brass rack, the nickname of
26:13which was a monkey.
26:14And the story goes that when the weather was very cold, the rack would contract and the cannonballs would be
26:20ejected.
26:21But, and I'm always the party people when it comes to these great stories, there are some problems with the
26:26explanation.
26:26We do know that the boys who brought the charges to the cannon were known as powder monkeys, that much
26:32is true.
26:33And that also, one type of cannon was indeed called a monkey back in the mid-17th century.
26:40However, there's no evidence that the word was ever applied to a plate under a pile of cannon.
26:45And not only that, cannonballs were always stored in a wooden rack, not on a metal one.
26:50And crucially as well, the earliest recorded versions of the phrase, going back before the balls version,
26:58feature noses and tails, suggesting that the phrase had been around for a very long time.
27:03And much more likely is that the phrase comes from, you know, the three statues of the monkeys that often
27:09were wearing brass.
27:10It was hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
27:12And you'll find them now in emojis, in fact, on phones and other apps.
27:16The idea then is probably of these monkeys, which are made of such hard brass, that they would only be
27:22affected by extreme cold.
27:24Hence the sort of, you know, the expression.
27:26So I'm sorry to be the particle, but that is the likeliest explanation.
27:30But speaking of weapons as well, just one final phrase that we hear these days is going ballistic.
27:35It's part of this inflationary language that we use, hear a lot these days.
27:38That goes back to the ballista, which were engines of war in ancient times.
27:43And they were huge catapults that hurled these large stones.
27:47And there was a large crossbow as well that fired a spear at the enemy.
27:52So when we talk about going ballistic, we're not just talking about modern ballistic missiles.
27:55We're looking all the way back to those ancient catapults.
