00:00In other news, the World Health Organization and other UN agencies warn of the need to
00:05increase funding for Ebola response.
00:07They state that the lack of resources could be one of the main obstacles to meeting the
00:11challenge posed by the virus.
00:13Our colleague Óscar Apelda shares the news with us.
00:18After having been infected and recovered, they are motivated to share the message they
00:24now know well, the importance of prevention.
00:27Community awareness is growing, and people are trying to take responsibility in the
00:32face of Ebola.
00:33But the circumstances still make it difficult.
00:38We have a water supply system, but we can go two, three or four days without water.
00:45Second, we don't have a thermometer.
00:48At the other end of the territory affected by the epidemic, in Kisangani, in Tishapo province,
00:53the first 2,000 doses of the Hervebo vaccine have been administered.
00:57Out of the 70,000 doses the government has received thanks to the WHO.
01:01Here, we have asked the government to make the vaccine available on a large scale in an
01:06effort to vaccinate the entire population.
01:08But we do not know whether it's effective against Pundi Puyo.
01:12Hervebo has been used since 2015 during the Zaire Ebola virus epidemics and others.
01:21But officials in Kisangani say that experience from the past few months at the first epicenter
01:26in Ituri province indicates that a high percentage of survivors were vaccinated, and vice versa.
01:34Most were vaccinated against the Zaire virus.
01:37That's why we believe the Zaire Ebola vaccine helps.
01:43Meanwhile, the UN emphasizes the need for additional resources to sustain humanitarian operations
01:50and support efforts to contain the outbreak.
01:53Material and human resources are needed.
01:55How fast we need those human resources, how fast we need these 1,600 beds is, as we say,
02:04an emergency program by yesterday.
02:08Most deaths still occur in the communities.
02:12And many infections stem from unknown chains of transmission, despite the rapid expansion of
02:17the response.
02:19There are now 4,000 workers, 24 decentralized laboratories, 59 treatment centers, and 1,300
02:27beds.
02:28But the area covered is also expanding, and they need to triple the current numbers.
02:33To run a treatment center of 50 beds, it costs approximately half a million dollars per month.
02:41Luca Fontana has also stated that the lack of resources could become a bottleneck in the
02:46response plan they are currently implementing.
02:49The responsibility for the population suffering, both past and future, remains up in the air.
02:55From Africa, Oscar Appelde for Telesaur.
