00:16Yeah, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, that's my guy, that's why we get, that's why they moved to the big
00:24bucks, that's the damn pick, sorry I'm going, that's the freaking pick baby,
00:30finally, the Jets are back, the Jets are back, who can forget that clip from Frankie V on draft night
00:39reacting to his guy David Bailey getting drafted by the Jets number two overall and I figure that's a great
00:45way to start something that's really special here because now on Gangs All Here we have an exclusive here with
00:51the Jets number two overall pick David Bailey right before the season starts and let me bring those guys in,
00:56I got David Bailey here with Frankie V of course
00:59and our Jets beat writer Brian Costello, before we get started, David, what's your reaction to seeing Tanky V given
01:07that reaction to your draft pick?
01:09Yeah, man, that's lit bro, I love the energy man, I appreciate that.
01:14Listen, yeah, go ahead Frankie.
01:17No, I spent months upon months man, fighting for you on Twitter, literally, the Arvel army, you know, we had
01:25the Bailey bros going on versus the Arvel army, it didn't stop so, you know, I'm glad I'm glad we
01:30ended up picking you at the end of the day.
01:32Appreciate that.
01:33Look, David, we really appreciate you giving us some time here just to talk about yourself and the start of
01:39your young career here.
01:40Look, I think the thing is when a team makes a number two overall pick, it is a franchise altering
01:47pick, but it also is a it's a moment for you in your life that you got to cherish and
01:52experience.
01:53So can you just tell us what that moment was like for you when the Jets made the call and
01:58said, hey, man, we're taking you number two overall?
02:01Yeah, man, um, it was it was I mean, that whole experience, man, that whole day was just it was
02:07super crazy.
02:08You know, leading up to it, we was obviously doing like a bunch of like photo shoots and like going
02:12out on the red carpet and everything.
02:15So they had like a bunch of stuff lined up for us.
02:17But, you know, like by the time you get to like the draft and you up in the green room,
02:21like you just you a little bit tired, but like obviously you better get drafted.
02:25So you still feeling like good to have a lot of energy, bro.
02:28And I just remember I was just sitting on the table and I didn't have a phone like a lot
02:33of some other people had like an extra phone and I didn't have a phone.
02:36So they gave me a phone. And then I just remember I was just sitting there and I don't even
02:40know what I was thinking, really, honestly.
02:42And I just seen the phone like right up red. I looked at my agent, man.
02:46He was like, man, like answer it. So I was like, OK, good.
02:49So I answered it, man. And then when it was moved on the phone, man, he's talking about he's about
02:53to draft me, man.
02:54And I was I was stoked, man. It is indescribable, really, honestly.
02:59I know it sounds a little bit cliche, but it really is. Yeah. So no, look, we can feel your
03:03energy even just from your answer there.
03:05And I respect that and appreciate you giving us your feedback there.
03:09But look, before I even get into the actual X's and O's of football and whatnot, I have to toss
03:13to my guy, Frankie, because he is the president of the Bailey Bros.
03:16He started this club. He was pounding the table for you since the start of the offseason when draft season
03:22really started.
03:23And he cannot be more excited to one, be talking to you, but to just playing for the Jets.
03:29So, Frankie, take it away, man. Well, yeah, David, I am so happy you're here, man.
03:34I and it's not only because of what you do on the field.
03:37It's not only because every year you got better in college until you were the best pass rusher by a
03:43mile your last year and the year before you were probably the best pass rusher also.
03:46But, you know, it's not only about what you do on the field that I that I love.
03:51It's also how you conduct yourself and the little things.
03:55When I listen to your interviews, I feel like you're a genuine person.
03:58You clearly put in the time.
04:00What is your mindset overall?
04:02Because we were joking around with Ryan the other day, like we kind of like that you're not on Twitter.
04:06You don't have a Twitter like little things like that show your focus level to your craft.
04:12What's your mindset like?
04:13Where do you get that from?
04:15Oh, man.
04:17You know, I think I don't know.
04:19I just always been like a man, like a little bit more low key guy, a little bit more chill
04:23guy.
04:25You know, I don't think like me abstaining from like Twitter use is really me like like showing how locked
04:33in or focused I am.
04:34It's just more like I'm just like a low key guy.
04:36So I really just don't have Twitter.
04:38I really don't like use Instagram a lot.
04:39So that's just the type of person I am.
04:41And I think that kind of just naturally helped me become the player that I that I became and I
04:48am right now.
04:48So, like, you know, it's not really anything that like I had to sacrifice.
04:52It's just kind of how I naturally am.
04:54But, yeah, that's my mean, that's my mindset in terms of that specifically.
04:57But, yeah, I mean, if you want to talk like terms of my mindset for football, man, I just like
05:04I just take pride in what I do.
05:07Getting a sack for me is the best feeling in the world.
05:10So it's really almost kind of like it's almost like it's almost like a feeling that I'm really chasing, you
05:16know, just this when it comes season time.
05:18And, you know, when it's when I'm working during the offseason and I don't feel like working out like it's
05:24really like I understand, like what it feels like to make plays, what it feels like to win with your
05:28with your brothers on the field.
05:30But, man, there's no other feeling like it.
05:32So, I mean, that's that's really what I'm chasing when I put in work.
05:37Kaz, you shocked that Frankie actually can ask a real football question for David.
05:42Kaz, if you have a question, please go.
05:45Yeah.
05:45No, this is my my 17 year old son would say Frankie is glazing, David.
05:51I believe that's the term.
05:52I'm old, David.
05:55David, I was talking to Pascal a few weeks ago.
05:59Oh, the International Pathway Program.
06:02Yeah.
06:02Pistol P, I believe.
06:04Harrison told me you guys call him.
06:06Yeah.
06:06And he told me you guys kind of had a moment before the first preseason game against Tampa where it
06:11kind of hit him.
06:12And he said you were with them where, like, you guys are in the stadium.
06:15You're in the NFL.
06:16Like, it's a preseason game, but you're there.
06:18Do you remember that moment?
06:20And has that kind of hit you?
06:22I imagine it's going to hit you again this week that the dream that you've had for however many years
06:26is coming true.
06:28Yeah.
06:28Yeah.
06:29No, for sure.
06:29I mean, I remember, like, we just walked out on the field.
06:32It's kind of like something like, you know, I did that, like, last year at Tech, too.
06:35I walked out on the field with, like, some of my position group, really all my position group.
06:38So, you know, just go outside, you know, take it all in.
06:41That's really probably what I'm going to do next week, honestly, for the whole season.
06:45Because it's just, it's good.
06:46Like, you know, you're in the stadium and there's nobody really there.
06:51Really only people there are, like, the couple of the other opponents and then the people that are practicing for,
06:56like, the national anthem.
06:57So, it's, like, super quiet, super low-key.
06:59And it's just, like, a good, good moment just to breathe it all in before, you know, you get going.
07:04So, yeah.
07:06David, I heard you speak after you got drafted by the Jets about how, you know, you don't know how
07:11you're going to, you know, interact with the veterans in the locker room.
07:15Or you don't know how, you know, your mindset's going to be.
07:17But you are walking into a locker room full of veterans, guys who've done there, been there, done that.
07:22And you came from such an incredible defense at Texas Tech.
07:26Have you, in your first couple months here now in the NFL, going through training camp and the offseason, have
07:33you had a, quote, unquote, welcome to the NFL moment yet?
07:39Now, I don't think I had that moment yet.
07:42But let me tell you, like, rookie duties are, like, rookie duties are crazy, man.
07:46Like, I've had to do some, not too wild.
07:49Honestly, my veterans are really cool, really laid back.
07:53But, I mean, I would probably say the rookie duties, you know, getting them snacks, getting them food.
07:57That's something, that's, like, a whole other responsibility that I've had to take on.
08:01But, no, my veterans, man, they're super cool, so.
08:05Have you had to do the dinner yet, David, where they fool you with a, you know, a $60,000
08:10bill or whatever comes?
08:12We've seen those before.
08:13No, no, no.
08:14I'm ready for that.
08:15We haven't had our dinner yet.
08:17But, no, I'll be ready for that.
08:18And I don't know what I'm going to do when that comes.
08:24Yeah, that's a rough one.
08:25I don't know how some guys do it.
08:26I don't know.
08:27I know Cog has done it a few times, I heard.
08:2960K for Cog.
08:30Forget it.
08:31Right there.
08:33But, David, you know what?
08:34I'm looking at these rookie projection sack numbers.
08:37I know you're not interested in this kind of stuff.
08:39But they have, yeah, like, six sacks.
08:42I saw somewhere like 5.75.
08:44Like, how do you get 5.75?
08:46That's kind of weird.
08:47But, right?
08:49Like, it's like, I said he, but, David, yeah, I'm taking you for the over.
08:54So, I'm going to take you for the over to the point that I'm doubling it.
08:58So, I told Cog, I told him, at least 10.5.
09:02Cog thought I was going to go up to 20.5.
09:05But, I mean, no.
09:06I appreciate that, bro.
09:09No, no.
09:09Of course, man.
09:10Of course.
09:10I love your game, man.
09:12And just a quick thing from my end.
09:14So, when you were going through the draft process, I know you hadn't taken the top 30 visit with the
09:20Jets.
09:20It's a little bit of a mystery almost as to what their interest was because I was looking things up
09:25and I was asking around and trying to see what's on Twitter and whatnot.
09:30How surprised were you when the Jets did draft you?
09:33Was it surprising?
09:34Did you have a feeling?
09:35Were there other teams more interested that you thought you were going to end up being maybe a Titan or
09:39something?
09:41Yeah, I mean, like, for me, since it was my first time going through the process, my initial reaction was
09:47that they're not interested.
09:49But, you know, I talked with my agent and, you know, he's been through this process and he was telling
09:54me, like, man, don't worry about it.
09:56You know, he had talked to Mooj.
09:57He had talked to all, you know, a lot of the Jets staff.
10:00He said, like, you know, don't worry about it.
10:02That really doesn't mean too much.
10:05Don't think too much into it.
10:08So, man, I trusted him on that.
10:09Um, uh, so my initial belief or understanding of, uh, or kind of feelings towards them canceling the visit kind
10:19of just like reset.
10:20And I also, I just ended up not really thinking about too much, but, um, no, I mean, can't say
10:27I was, I was, uh, surprised, but I was, I mean, I was for sure excited, man.
10:31I was stoked.
10:31So, uh, David, as you're building yourself and getting yourself ready for your first NFL game, uh, we got to
10:38see you get your first, uh, you know, sack in the preseason against the Steelers.
10:42Uh, we're hoping, uh, we're hoping we can't wait to see your first official stack in the regular season, but
10:47what was that like for you just to actually be able to, to hit another quarterback in the NFL?
10:51Cause we, and we know in the joint practice, you really can't touch the quarterback, uh, against the bucks, but
10:57in the, in the Steelers game, what was that like for you?
11:00Uh, yeah, man, it was great. Uh, honestly, just like a sense of relief, uh, you know, knowing that, you
11:06know, I'm in a different environment, different setting and I'm playing better comp, but like I could still, you know,
11:11do what I did in college.
11:13So, um, obviously it's just the preseason. So I wasn't thinking, you know, too much into it, but it's still,
11:18again, it's the first sack of my, you know, rookie career. So, you know, it's still, still felt good. So.
11:24David, I don't know if you, how much Jets history, you know, I know you're, you know, coming from California,
11:29you probably don't know much, but the Jets had a guy in the eighties who was a sack master, Mark
11:34Gastineau, and he used to do a sack dance after every sack. He was kind of famous for that sack
11:39dance. We, will you celebrate when you get a sack in the regular season?
11:43Yeah, I'm gonna celebrate with all my teammates. If I, if I get a sack, it's going to be because
11:48of, uh, it's going to be a group effort, man. It's going to be because of the play call. It's
11:52going to be because.
11:53Uh, my secondaries are doing a good job covering. It's going to be because my, my interior D-line is
11:58doing a great job, you know, uh, affecting the, the, the, the depth of the pocket. So it's going to
12:03be, it's going to be a group celebration for sure on the sideline, man.
12:08Bailey, people talk about you not wearing gloves, not having long sleeves. And I love that. That's like some, some
12:16old school Reggie White kind of stuff. I, I've called you Lawrence Taylor Jr. By the way, I'm throwing that
12:21one out there also.
12:22So just to kind of throw all the good names out there, but, um, Hey, he's a rookie. All right.
12:31It's going to take some time, but he's going to get there. Um, if it snows, right. Or, or it's
12:36cold. Everyone's like, is he going to wear gloves? Like how many times have you actually played in this snow?
12:40I probably should know that, but I mean.
12:42Oh man. Uh, it's honestly zero. Now that I think about it. Yeah. Really? Interesting. Yeah. I played in some
12:49cold games like Utah. When I was at Stanford, I played in, it was pretty cold. Um, Washington was pretty
12:54cold, but snow. Nah, I don't think I've really, I've had no snow. Honestly.
12:59David, uh, it's been no secret, you know, the jets, they needed this pass rush help, uh, specifically from that
13:05defense last year, going into this year. Uh, and, and we don't want to, as jets fans, we don't want
13:10to put too much pressure or expectations on you, but man, you, you really took the jets fandom by storm
13:16this preseason. And we're really excited for you. I think one thing I always wonder, and from your mindset, you're
13:22going up against some of the best quarterbacks in the AFC. Uh,
13:25and I'm thinking about Josh Allen, you're going to be chasing Malik Willis down in Miami. Uh, you know, there
13:31is obviously the guys like Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes. What is your, you know, mentality when you're thinking about going
13:38against some of those quarterbacks?
13:41Um, I'm not really thinking about that right now, but honestly, I'm thinking about it, you know, uh, week by
13:47week. I mean, we're going as a good ass quarterback right now. Uh, obviously going against Cam Ward, he's extremely
13:52elusive. He's a good quarterback. So, um, you know, we,
13:55we put together a plan um to try and contain him uh and again that's going to be a group
14:00effort but
14:01you know going against specific quarterback obviously you got to be uh cognizant of of
14:05there's certain abilities they have and certain strengths they have but um you know my mindset
14:10really i don't think it really drastically changes from week to week i think it's pretty consistent
14:14in terms of you know what i want to get done and what i want to help the team with
14:18so
14:20david one of the um most memorable practices of the summer was the one with the bucks when
14:24you were in the middle of uh some scrums there there with that with luke gedeke and then baker
14:29got in your face a little bit what was your take from that day what was your what was your
14:34side of
14:35the story of what happened that day my take from that day was i i was honestly just like i
14:42at the
14:42end of the whole the the joint practice i was really mad that we only get one of those a
14:48year because
14:48that was honestly some of the most fun i've had in a while um i really i really love those
14:53joint
14:54practices because you know it gets it gets not i want to say boring but you just kind of like
14:57when
14:58i'm going against membu which is like he's one of the best tackles um in the league um and he's
15:03getting me better every day but like you just want to go against someone different so i really did love
15:07again love the joint practices i love uh going you know total total uh godecky yeah he's a great
15:12tackle so and i just i had a lot of fun and the the the skirmishes and like the fights
15:18man that's like
15:18the best part i feel like a little bit but yeah listen the way you made skadecky there on that
15:23when
15:23that two drill the first play i remember you you were in there you got a little too close for
15:27him
15:28he got on you a little bit yeah yeah yeah no that was yeah that was a lot of fun
15:34i said i was saying you made luke kadecky look like a rookie so big bad luke kadecky mr tough
15:39guy out
15:40there you you got by him really whenever you wanted yeah yeah no no he's for sure he was a
15:44great
15:45tackle though he gave me gave me great work uh i saw a play where you um no really really
15:50quick
15:50i saw a play where you had uh you had gotten by gadecky and then brayden mcgregor came in
15:56and in a one-on-one he got home and i saw you guys kind of like dapping each other
16:00up
16:00have you and mcgregor sort of you know been working on some stuff together like it seemed like you guys
16:06were kind of doing kind of the same kind of moves pass rush moves i don't know i was just
16:10curious to ask
16:11no nothing i don't think i mean i think we have maybe like similar attributes uh he i mean he
16:16bro he's he's a phenomenal player brand he's got great length uh great strength and he has really
16:22he has honestly a pretty versatile pass rush uh skill set but now we didn't work on anything in
16:27particular i think just naturally kind of obviously we're in the same position group we see the same
16:32stuff in in film so we might just picked up the same stuff but yeah no he's a great player
16:37man
16:37david i heard you mention armam membu going up against him every day uh you know real quick
16:42in college in your career is there any offensive tackle that comes to mind that was one of the
16:48best that you uh faced in your college career oh yeah uh for sure like spencer fondue was was great
16:54um you know freshman year i wasn't really the best pass rush so it kind of seemed like anybody i
16:59went up against was was pretty good um i remember going against uh uh uw cat he's actually on i
17:07forgot his name uh we played him on pit he's like the left tackle i think 77 he was uh
17:12yeah
17:14yeah yeah yeah yeah he was one of the best tackles in the pack 12 when it was still a
17:20still a thing so
17:21i remember going against him he was really good but you know i've gone against some great great
17:25tackles all my years david you talked about von miller being a guy you watch a lot of what is
17:32it
17:32obviously von miller's gonna be in the hall of fame whenever he retires what is it you you model
17:38yourself after his game what is it that you kind of like when you study him yeah um sorry about
17:44that
17:44uh nah von is uh man he's uh just just the way he plays man i want when it's all
17:50said and done i want
17:51my like highlight tape to look like just like his man but uh man just the way he gets after
17:55the
17:56quarterback um elite band uh just it just seems like he always knows what to do when it like uh
18:03when his first move doesn't work he always has a count already um so man he's just he yeah he's
18:08like the first pass rusher that i really studied um for real so david uh in your brief time now
18:16in
18:16the northeast has there uh been any food item or thing that you've experienced that uh is like
18:23okay i get i get this a little bit like this was this was good or the food that you
18:27really enjoyed
18:28was there anything that stood out yet um so i've been to new york a couple of times um and
18:34uh my
18:36agency does a great job of you know showing me a lot of spots so i've had some fantastic food
18:40in new
18:41york um i went to like uh corner store uh i went to stew what was the other spot i'm
18:49blanking out on
18:49the names i went to uh peter luger's uh peter luger's is the best man oh yeah best steakhouse
18:57best steakhouse in the city it was it was yeah it was extremely good i've been to a couple spots
19:02but
19:03um honestly i wish i had gone out a little bit more uh when i had time uh during that
19:08break that
19:08they gave us but um for sure postseason i'm definitely going to be in the city a lot uh trying
19:12out new food instead well bailey whenever you're free uh mr costello down there he'll he'll take us
19:19out he'll pay like he usually does but in the out there so just let us know and uh yeah

19:51you
19:51you
19:51you
19:52you
19:52you
