00:00At Treasury questions in the House of Commons on Tuesday,
00:04Chancellor John Healey was challenged on the plans to expand Heathrow.
00:09In his response to Liberal Democrat business spokeswoman Sarah Olney,
00:13he said after years of delay, years of indecision, years of often vectitious challenge,
00:19the government has given the go-ahead to the project because the economic case stacks up
00:24and will help bring growth.
00:27However, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has previously expressed concern over the expansion,
00:33stating the plans divert infrastructure investment away from the north and traps it in London.
00:40Also, according to a report released last week,
00:44building a third runway at the airport would overshoot the UK's legally binding climate targets.
00:51In a post on social media, Lord Khan said last week he was deeply concerned
00:57about the potential adverse impacts of the Heathrow plans,
01:01citing possible effects to air quality, news pollution, the environment and other transport networks.
01:08Heathrow said the expansion plans will ensure the country gets the infrastructure it needs
01:13to stay competitive and will deliver all-important economic growth.
01:18Estimated to cost £33bn, including £1.5bn, to move the M25 to build the runway,
01:26the scheme is expected to be fully privately financed.
