Roman warfare wasn't always about swords and spears.

The Roman military also used small iron caltrops designed to obstruct advancing soldiers and horses. Their four-spiked design meant one spike would remain pointing upward, making them an effective obstacle when scattered across the ground. Archaeological examples survive, including Roman caltrops found at Caerleon in Wales.
