How do you attack a fortress perched high above a desert landscape, protected by steep cliffs?

During the First Jewish–Roman War, Roman forces under Lucius Flavius Silva besieged Masada around 73–74 CE. Rather than relying on a direct climb, the army established camps, constructed a circumvallation wall and developed an assault approach along the western side of the plateau.

This cinematic 3D CGI reconstruction explores how Roman engineers used the natural terrain together with earth, stone and timber to prepare an approach toward the fortress. It also shows how the wider siege system helped control movement around the isolated stronghold.

The surviving camps, perimeter works and assault approach are archaeologically documented. However, the precise relationship between the natural bedrock and the constructed ramp—and some details of the final assault—remain subjects of historical interpretation.

A separate Empire Echo Story explores another dramatic episode from Roman history: the reported bidding for the imperial throne involving the Praetorian Guard and Didius Julianus in AD 193.
