00:32Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:35I shall today adopt a very, I suppose, soft and gentle tone for two reasons, really.
00:42Because north of the border, you may be recovering from Burns Night.
00:46And I don't want to sort of, you know, rock your heads too much for that poor, terrible headache you've
00:51got.
00:51But secondly, today apparently is Blue Monday.
00:54Not named after the 1980s New Order song, but because apparently today we feel,
01:01and I'm reading from the research department's notes, our lowest, a cold commute to work, minimum hours of daylight,
01:07and feeling the financial crunch after Christmas, of course.
01:10But we mustn't dwell on these things, because after all, think Blue Mountains, think no more of Blue Monday.
01:20Why? Because it's Australia Day.
01:21Oh, is it?
01:22It's Australia, absolutely, apparently so.
01:24Down in Australia, on Australia Day, they're commemorating the landing way back in 1788 of Captain Arthur Phillips,
01:32who was the first British naval officer, apparently, and the first governor of New South Wales.
01:36So there you are, good day, down under.
01:39Lovely.
01:40Have you been there?
01:40I've not.
01:41I've actually got a family there that I didn't realise I had, so I should make a visit at some
01:45point.
01:45But there's so many places around there I'd love to go to.
01:47My cousin's, she's going to marry a Kiwi, so at one stage we'll go over to New Zealand when they're
01:52over there
01:53and hopefully make a trip to Fiji and Bora Bora and the French-Pornesian Islands, just, you know.
01:57Good idea.
01:57Just because you have to if you go all that way.
02:00I've not been down, I might go and have a poke about it.
02:03Enjoy.
02:04Yeah.
02:04Who have we got with us?
02:05We have got a three-time winner last week.
02:08Tracy Mills from Stockport.
02:10Three good wins.
02:11So let's see how you get on this week.
02:14Unbeaten, you'll be our second octo-champ of the series if you get through this week.
02:18And you're joined.
02:19You've got to overcome Mickey Winn-Davies, a retiree who divides her time between Oxted in Surrey
02:26and Le Lavandu down in Provence on the Cote d'Azur, the Mediterranean.
02:30Le Lavandu.
02:32I had an embarrassing time there once.
02:33I may well have regaled our audience with it before.
02:36I was taken to that little island in the...
02:39Yes.
02:40It's called the Ile de Poquerolle.
02:41The Ile de Poquerolle, yes.
02:42Have you been there?
02:42We have been there.
02:43And to the other one, which is called Poquerolle.
02:46Yeah.
02:46Which is a...
02:47They're all known as the Ile d'Or.
02:49The Ile d'Or.
02:50Yeah.
02:50It means the Golden Island.
02:52Indeed.
02:52But you've got to take all your clothes off on one of them.
02:54Not necessarily.
02:55It depends which part of Poquerolle you go to.
02:58I went to the one where you had to.
02:59No.
03:00Never been there.
03:02Oh, well, there's always something to look forward to, Mickey.
03:04Let's have a big round of applause for Tracy and Mickey.
03:11And over the corner, of course, the wonderful Susie Dent,
03:14joined once again by one of our favourite Dictionary Corner guests,
03:19none other, of course, than Helen Skelton, TV presenter
03:22and action lady, sans paris, as we say, without parallel.
03:28Well, thank you very much.
03:29It's nice to be back.
03:30Let's hear some of your extraordinary stories a little later on.

13:25Just a good form.
13:26Well done.
13:28So, 48 plays 30 as we turn to Helen.
13:33Now, Helen, you've presented so many things.
13:38Blue Peter, Countryfile, and some huge, big international events.
13:42Does it always go swimmingly?
13:45Never.
13:46It never goes swimmingly.
13:47And for me, I often find that things go wrong around the same people.
13:51I don't know whether the nerves get to me.
13:52But Chris Hoy, I'm sure you all know, absolute legend.
13:56Recently, just before Christmas, at Sports Personality, I was doing something before he got his Lifetime Achievement Award.
14:01So, a lot of respect in the audience.
14:03I had to go on stage with a Scotty dog.
14:06Not only did it wee on my arm, but when I bent down to pick it up, I got my
14:09heels caught in my skirt, so I couldn't get off the floor.
14:13But I swear it's something to do with Chris Hoy, because at the Olympic parade in 2012, huge international audience,
14:20it was simulcast on 4, ITV, BBC One, and I had to welcome all the Olympians in.
14:25And just as Chris Hoy came onto the stage, there was a gust of wind, and my skirt blew up,
14:29revealing my lovely Bridget Jordan's knickers.
14:33Unfortunately, I didn't know that had happened.
14:35So, all the crowd was cheering, and I was like, wow, they love Chris Hoy.
14:39So, I started egging them on.
14:40So, I didn't even know until afterwards, and about 50 people had texted me saying, wow, that was a welcome.
14:46Oh, brilliant, brilliant.
14:47And somebody told me that the Prime Minister pitched up.
14:50Oh, yeah, the Prime Minister walked on stage after that, and just pointed at the area and said, well handled,
14:56Helen, well handled.
14:58Indeed.
14:59Keeping your cool.
15:00Brilliant stuff.
15:01Thank you very much, Helen Skelton.
15:03But now, with the score standing at 48 to Mickey's 30, we turn to Tracy.

15:39No vowel.
15:39Noào.
16:16Poultice.
16:19Very nice.
16:21Poultice.
16:21Put it on a swelling, I think, don't you?
16:24You do.
16:25Originally, it consisted of bran, flower, herbs, etc.
16:28And it relieves soreness.
16:31But no out-lie, I'm afraid.
16:33There's out-lier, but not out-lie.
16:35As a verb, that's bad luck.
16:36There we are.
16:37Now then, Susie, what have we got?
16:39Helen.
16:40The only eight we had was poultice, wasn't it?
16:42And then we had couplet.
16:44Yes.
16:45Yes.
16:46And octuple as well, which is literally something that consists of eight parts, all things,
16:52as you might expect.
16:53Indeed.
16:54Thank you very much, Susie.
16:5556, please.
16:56Mickey's 30.

18:22Moted.
18:23Susie?
18:24Teamed.
18:24You could have another six.

18:39Thank you, Tracey.

24:26in English just some of the instances and some of our numbers have been quite
24:30wobbly over time so they haven't always meant what we take them to be today so
24:33if you take a hundred and that goes back to old Norse and the Vikings but for
24:38them it was a hundred and twenty and when it came over into anglo-saxon the 20s
24:43slowly dropped off but the larger hundred which was sometimes called the long
24:46hundred persisted for quite some time so if you were talking about a field that
24:52was a long hundred in length it could be 120 acres so that stayed with us for
24:56quite a long time and there was a statute in 1660 that said that a hundred eggs
25:02should equal a hundred and twenty in other words containing six score and of
25:07course we still count eggs in multiples of six and the word journey comes from
25:12the old French journey or day and for around 1250 in English it meant very
25:17specifically 24 hours travel so we talk about a long journey today that wasn't
25:22possible in those days it meant a very specific period of time decimation a lot
25:28of us know that that comes from late 16th century but it goes all the way back to
25:31the Roman punishment of selecting by lot so it's completely random for
25:36execution one-tenth of the men out of a group of soldiers who had mutinated or
25:42committed some horrible crime thought to be horrible a scruple once meant 20
25:48grains of rice and it could also mean a rough pebble so when we have scruples
25:52now or worries or anxieties about something it's the same as having rough
25:56pebbles in our shoe and on countdown of course our numbers are always
25:59completely exact and a hundred means a hundred but there are lots more instances
26:03in English of numbers featuring in ways that you might not expect fantastic
26:14so good so good 86 to Mickey's 43 Mickey you're back on penultimate letters game for you now

27:51We didn't have anything longer, but we had a few sevens,
27:55we had cringes, and we had syringe.
27:58I love that word.
27:59A syringe?
28:00Yeah.
28:01Yeah.
28:02You like it?
28:02Well, I think it sounds like what it is, doesn't it?
28:05It does, rather.
28:06I always think it's rather frightening, actually.
28:08Susie?
28:08Well, it goes all the way back to Greek mythology
28:10and a set of pan pipes where a nymph was changed
28:13into a set of pan pipes played by pan.
28:17So it's got a very romantic origin, syringe.
28:19Well, well, well.
28:19It's a very shape.
28:20She knows everything.
28:22She knows everything.

29:35Tracey? Diopsis.
29:36And Mickie? Proudest.
29:39Proudest.
29:41Excellent. Diopsis are, in physics, units of refractive power.
29:46That's all about focal strength of a lens.
29:50I see. Very good.
29:51Now, what have we got in the corner there? Chewing your pen there, Helen?
29:54We had sprouted. Yes.
29:57Outsider. Can you have stupider?
29:59You can have stupider, yes. I've got a clue.
30:02There was a nine. Stupider is not a very good word.
30:04I know, it's a bit clumsy, that one.
30:06But it's a loud look. There. There we are.
30:08But there is a nine, and it's dipterous. D-I-P-T-E-R-O-U-S.
30:12And it's all about flies, from the order diptera.
30:19Very good.
30:21Talking about flying, we've got Tracey at 102.
30:24Well done, Tracey. You've cracked through to 102.
30:27And two, very strong.
30:29And the final numbers game, Mickey.
30:35Well, as this is my last appearance on Countdown,
30:38let's go for three big ones and three little ones.
30:40Why not mix it up? Have a bit of fun. Thank you, Mickey.
30:43Three big, three little ones.
30:45And for the final time today, the numbers are nine, four, three,
30:49and the large ones, one hundred, twenty-five and seventy-five.
30:53And the target, two hundred and sixty-seven.
30:56Two, six, seven.
30:58We'll be right now.
31:18We'll be right now.
31:28Mickey.
31:29I think I've got 268.
31:31Tracy.
31:32266.
31:34266.
31:35Right then.
31:36Mickey.
31:37Right.
31:38I said three times 100.
31:40Three times 100, 300.
31:42And then take away the 25.
31:44275.
31:46And then take away the four and the three.
31:49And you've already used the three.
31:51Of course I have.
31:52I'm sorry, Mickey.
31:53Yeah, of course I have.
31:54Bad luck.
31:55What does Tracy have to say?
31:57100 times three is 300.
32:00Yep.
32:00Minus a 25 is 275.
32:02And take the nine, which is 266.
32:04266, one below, yes.
32:06Ah, bad luck.
32:06Bad luck, Mickey.
32:08But 267 is really what we had in mind, Rachel.
32:11Oh, yes.
32:12It wasn't the easiest, but you could have said 75 minus nine is 66.
32:17Times it by four for 264 and add on a three for 267.
32:21There we go.
32:22Well done, Rachel.
32:26Well done, indeed.
32:28So, Tracy on 109.
32:30Great score.
32:31Mickey on 59.
32:32Not bad.
32:33As we go into the final round, conundrum time.
32:35So, Tracy and Mickey, fingers on buzzers.
32:38Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:50We'll see you next time.
33:12Now then, Mickey.
33:14I just wanted to press the button, really.
33:17Have you got anything for us?
33:18Oh, how about, uh, reverted?
33:23No, the rest of the time is down to Tracy.
33:30Well done, Mickey. Thank you for that.
33:32Now then, we're foxed up here.
33:34But who in the audience will give us a compelling answer?
33:37Yes, yes, sir. Revisited. Revisited?
33:40Let's see whether you're right. Revisited.
33:46Indeed.
33:50Well done.
33:51So, well done, Tracy. 109. Good score.
33:54So that's four wins for you. Very well played.
33:57And, uh, Mickey, no shame in, uh, scoring 59 against that sort of performance.
34:02Well done. It's younger than my age, anyway.
34:03Well done.
34:04And, uh, take this. I've got your bag with you as well.
34:06That would be super, thank you. I could do with a new dictionary.
34:09It's yours. After that.
34:11Now then, Tracy, come see us tomorrow. Smashing score.
34:14Yep.
34:14Four wins under your belt. Well done. Well done indeed.
34:17Thank you. See you tomorrow, Susie.
34:18See you tomorrow.
34:18See you tomorrow.
34:19Rachel, tomorrow.
34:21Adam there.
34:21Look forward to seeing you tomorrow, same time, same place.
