00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio. I'm the second champion of Champions semi-final. Just one place left.
00:39One contestant will be flying into the final tomorrow and the other sadly will be flying home. Flying? Why flying?
00:46Because today marks the 40th anniversary of Concorde going into commercial service. And what a wonderful, beautiful, brilliant aircraft it
00:55was. And of course it came out of service way back in 2003.
00:59But another form of transport that once was the future and then went into the past may well come back.
01:05And I talk of course about the hovercraft. I think invented by a chap called Christopher Cockrell who really started
01:12off with something crazy looking thing called the Flying Bedstead.
01:16Oh right.
01:17And it was the sort of prototype of the hovercraft and then they put a skirt on it and it
01:21became the hovercraft. And I remember travelling by hovercraft. They used to run cross channel trips. You could drive your
01:28car into this hovercraft and there would be four big engines and it would make a hell of a noise
01:31and take you across the channel.
01:33But they're coming back because they've got powerful electric motors that are, you know, quiet. The old ones were terribly
01:41noisy. So that would be wonderful.
01:44Now what sort of...
01:44I've not seen one like that but I've been on... Is it the same kind of thing you know they
01:47have in the Everglades?
01:49Yes.
01:49Oh yeah, I've been on one of those where you go and you see the crocs or the alligators or
01:53whatever there is over there.
01:54There's something terrifying about a crocodile, isn't there? It's such a wonderful machine.
01:58That is my recurring bad dream. Crocodiles being chased by them, yeah.
02:02Yeah.
02:02No, I'm firmly in the hovercraft.
02:05I'm with you in that dream. Now, will we have a dream today or will we have a nightmare at
02:11the end of it? Let's see. It's Jen Stedman versus Dan McCollum.
02:15Cool Dan. Here to face the final is Jen stormed through the rounds in the series, beating Callum Todd in
02:23the quarterfinals.
02:24And Dan, cool Dan we call him, battling it out. Playing, I think, Mark Murray and beating Mark Murray 112
02:32to 99. Is that right?
02:33Yeah, that's right.
02:34Let's hope that we have an absolutely blistering semi-final here today. Good luck to you both. Thank you.
02:39Big round of applause for two very worthy contestants.
02:45And in the corner, of course, Susie and Naga Manchetti, back again, coming to us from the BBC studio, looking
02:54as fresh as Daisy, even though she was up at two in the morning.
02:56A little bit later than that, but early.
02:58And a good player too. Well done.
03:00I've enjoyed it. Enjoying it.

11:59I had phrase and I had raises, but I didn't quite get Fraser.
12:03Fraser, no.
12:04It's an unusual word, really, not that you'd use it too often in a day.
12:08All right, 48 points apiece.
12:10Now then, Dan, numbers time.
12:12Can I go four hours, please, Rachel?
12:14You can.
12:14Thank you, Dan.

13:09100 minus 5, 95.
13:12Then 75 over 25 is 3.
13:14Yep.
13:14Then multiply them together.
13:15Keep it simple, 285, lovely.
13:17There we go.
13:18And Jen?
13:18Yeah, same.
13:19Same way.
13:20Yeah, well done.
13:21Well done, all right.
13:25So, sticking closely together, 58 apiece.
13:28We've got a contest and a half on our hands here.
13:31Let's turn to Naga.
13:33Naga, news reading in these troubled times can be a very serious job, really.
13:38Absolutely.
13:38But occasionally, occasionally, you have a little giggle, I'm told.
13:43You know, it took me a very long time to allow myself to giggle during a news programme.
13:50And there, obviously, is a time and a place.
13:52So, we had Charles Aznavour on the programme, 91 years old, and he was sitting next to us.
13:58And we were just about to interview him.
14:01And we came in from what's called a wide shot.
14:02You see us talking.
14:04And Charlie leant over to me and said, oh, he's got his mobile phone on.
14:08And it was just as our microphones were being brought up.
14:11So, I said to him, oh, you've just caught us.
14:12Said to the audience, you've just caught us.
14:14You've got your mobile phone with you.
14:16And he went, no, this is the device to control my hearing aid.
14:20And I turned to Charlie and went, thinking I wasn't on camera.
14:25But everyone saw it.
14:26And you hear the laughing in the game.
14:28And you've done something so, which seemed so awful to everyone else, but it was so innocent.
14:32And the other time, so I felt really bad then.
14:34But the other time was we challenged Steph, who looks after all the business news, the financial news, to carve
14:39a pumpkin, obviously, around Halloween.
14:42And she did.
14:43She carved this amazing pumpkin in an hour.
14:45She brought it in and she showed us.
14:46And we were telling her how wonderful it was.
14:48And she said, oh, my fingers smell now of pumpkin.
14:52And Charlie went, well, it could be worse.
14:54And I just found it so funny.
14:56And I couldn't stop laughing.
14:58And so anyone else was like, it's not that funny.
15:00But I just kept laughing and loving and loving.
15:01And they had to take over the next bit.
15:03So, it happens and it catches you at the weirdest of times.
15:07Brilliant.
15:07Well, lovely story.
15:08Let me just tell you, you had Charles Aznavour there.
15:10And the sort of the daddy of Countdown, who brought Countdown to this country from France, a chap called Marcel
15:17Stellman,
15:17who used to make, or indeed who used to arrange, Charles Aznavour's songs in English.
15:23Am I right, Susie?
15:24Yes, you are.
15:25Yeah.
15:25We love him a lot.
15:26He's a wonderful man.
15:27Absolutely.
15:28Brilliant stuff.
15:29Lovely stuff.
15:30Well done.
15:30Well done.
15:34Well done.
15:35Now then, serious business here.
15:3858 points apiece.
15:39Nobody's broken anybody else.
15:41It's Jen's letters game.
15:42Let's see how she'll do.

23:36Flexion here as well, but otherwise you have section or confit.
23:40Very sevens there.
23:42Very good.
23:42Otherwise.
23:43Well done.
23:43All right.
23:44101 plays 83.
23:45And Jen, it's your letters game.
23:48Jen.

23:50Thank you, Jen.

24:23And a final M.
24:25And the countdown clock starts now.
24:29.
24:29.
24:29.
24:30.
24:30MUSIC CONTINUES
24:56MUSIC CONTINUES
24:58Well, Jen?
25:01Um...
25:02I will try an eight.
25:08Your face does not betray confidence there.
25:11Cool down.
25:12Um, I'm going to stick with a seven, I think.
25:15And your seven?
25:16Momentum.
25:17Now then, Jen.
25:19I don't think it's a word, but it's a second L on the end.
25:21Momentum.
25:23Momentum?
25:23Could be surprised, Jen.
25:25It's in.
25:27APPLAUSE
25:34Um, momentum, Dan's momentum is a plural of momentum, and momentum is something entirely
25:39different.
25:40It's to do with statistics, and it's all about random variables.
25:43Um, absolutely brilliant.
25:45Well done.
25:45Now, Naga.
25:46No, mantle was the best I could come up with.
25:49All right.
25:49And Susie, anything there?
25:50Actually, momental.
25:52So, yes, I was with Jen on that one.
25:54Well done.
25:55All right.
25:55Jolly good.
25:56Now, Susie, take the pressure off them just for a second with your wonderful origins of
26:01words.
26:02I thought I would talk today about a few idioms where you would imagine that they would just
26:06be figurative, metaphorical, but in fact they do have very literal beginnings.
26:10And we'll start with burying the hatchet.
26:13To bury the hatchet is to be reconciled and to declare peace, if you like, between two
26:17warring parties.
26:19She goes back to a Native American custom where they literally did, literally, bury a hatchet
26:25or a tomahawk in the ground, and that would be their declaration of peace and to signal
26:29the laying down of arms between two warring factions.
26:33Stealing someone's thunder, always my favourite, really does go back to a real thunder machine
26:39invented by the playwright and actor manager, John Dennis.
26:43He did invent a machine that produced the sound of thunder.
26:47His play closed early because there were poor audience attendances, but in fact the production
26:53that came after him stole his thunder machine and used it, and he apparently was in the
26:57audience, stood up and said, by Jove, they've stolen my thunder.
27:00So, very, very literal, which I quite like.
27:03And the phrase, in a nutshell, as well, again, it conveys very nicely the idea of something
27:08being very pithy and concise.
27:11But the Roman scholar Pliny describes Cicero, the philosopher, witnessing a copy of Homer's
27:16epic poem, the Iliad, that had been written on a piece of parchment so small that it could
27:21fit into the shell of a wal-mutt.
27:24Wonderful story.
27:26Brilliant.
27:30Brilliant.
27:30101 plays 91.
27:32And Dan, the run-in penultimate letters game.
27:35Can I start with a consonant, please?
27:36Thank you, Dan.
27:38Thank you, Dan.
27:39Consonant.
27:40S.
27:42Consonant.
27:43G.

27:46E.
27:48Vowel.

27:50One more vowel, please.

28:36T.
28:36Vowel.
28:39Yes, Dan. I'll try and eat.
28:41Jen?
28:42Might as well try and eat.
28:43All right, Dan.
28:45Geniused.
28:46Geniused.
28:47Unseaved.
28:49Unseaved?
28:50Yeah.
28:51Geniused, surprisingly, is in.
28:54To be genius is to be endowed with natural ability or genius.
28:59Unseaved, which you would think would be the more likely one, is not there, Jen.
29:04I'm sorry.
29:05Oh, bad luck.
29:06Bad luck.
29:07109, therefore, plays 91 as we turn once again to the corner.
29:12Now then.
29:13ING was the thing we picked up on there.
29:15Yeah.
29:16Seeding, didn't we?
29:17Seeding, yes.
29:18Otherwise, six is seed.
29:19Segway, guides, that sort of thing.
29:21Segway, it's a great word.
29:22It's good if you can get one as well.
29:24All right.
29:25There we go.
29:2691 plays 109.
29:27And, Jen, final letters came for you.
29:30Constance, please.
29:31Thank you, Jen.
29:32P.
29:33And another.

30:27And a vowel.
30:33And another.
30:34And a vowel.
30:39Now then, Jen?
30:40Just six.
30:42A six, and done?
30:43Yeah, six as well.
30:44And a six.
30:44Jen?
30:45Tea-poy.
30:46Tea-poy and?
30:47Tea-pot.
30:48And tea-pot.
30:50Yes, tea-poy is a three-legged stand on which you might put your pot of tea.
30:55Tea-pot, excellent, of course, we love that one.
30:57And you can have tappets in a car engine.
31:00You can have it in singular or plural.
31:02Moving parts in a machine, which transmits motion in a straight line between a cam and another part.
31:07Does that sound right?
31:08Yes.
31:09There you go.
31:09Tappets.
31:10You can hear them sometimes when you shouldn't.
31:13OK.
31:14My tappets are making a terrible noise.
31:16So 115 plays, 97, and Dan, final numbers game.
31:20I'll stick with one large, I think, Rachel.
31:22I thought you might.
31:23Sticking with one large to try and secure a place in the final.
31:25Thank you, Dan.
31:26One large, five small, but Jen still has a shot.
31:28My last numbers game of the day is one, seven, two, four, ten.
31:35And the big one, 75.
31:36And the target, 202.
31:39202.

32:10Dan?
32:11Yeah, I think I've got 202.
32:13Jen?
32:14Yeah, 202.
32:15All right.
32:16Dan?
32:16OK, 75 take 2.
32:1875 minus 2 is 73.
32:204 take 1.
32:214 take 1 is 3.
32:24Multiply.
32:244, 219.
32:26And take 10, take 7.
32:28And then 10 in the 7 you haven't used for 202.
32:30Well done.
32:31Well done.
32:31And Jen?
32:32A different way.
32:3275 minus 10.
32:3465.
32:352 plus 1 is 3.
32:372 plus 1, 3.
32:38Multiply them.
32:39195.
32:40And add the 7.
32:41Well done again.
32:42202.
32:43Very good.
32:46All right.
32:47So 125 takes Jen's 107 as we reach the final round.
32:52So Jen and Kuldan, fingers on buzzers.
32:55Let's reveal today's countdown conundrum in this semi-final.
33:06Jan?
33:07Jen?
33:07Tin-plated.
33:09Let's see whether you're right.
33:11Roll it.
33:12Tin-plated.
33:13Roll.
33:20Well done, Jen.
33:22Well done.
33:23On this occasion, Dan, Cool Dan McColm,
33:27is propelled into the grand final.
33:30Well done, indeed.
33:31I don't think Cool describes me accurately in that last numbers round.
33:34No, I noticed a little bit of sort of, you know, excitement there,
33:38which disappointed me.
33:40And, Jen, what a chance.
33:43Charming, friendly, amusing contestant you've been.
33:46You've been tremendous.
33:47Take this home with you with our very best wishes.
33:51You've been a joy to have here.
33:52Well done.
33:53So tomorrow we have the final.
33:56It's exciting.
33:57Yes, we have the final.
33:59We'll see you tomorrow, Naga, and Susie, too.
34:01Thank you, too.
34:02What do you reckon?
34:02Oh, what a great contest.
34:04Wasn't it lovely?
34:04They haven't got the same amount of letters,
34:05but the nine was worth more than the conundrum.
34:07So very bad luck, Jen, but I think you were very popular,
34:09as shown by the audience.
34:10Yes, yes.
34:11And I can see why.
34:12See you tomorrow.
34:14See you tomorrow for the final.
34:15Same time, same place.
34:16You'll be sure of it.
34:17You'll be absolutely sure of it.
34:18Set your alarm clock.
34:21If you're planning an afternoon doze,
34:24you'll be sure of it.
34:25Good afternoon.
34:45An 18-month-old little chihuahua who has had a massive shock.
34:49The Super Vettel sought it.
34:51The new series continues tonight at 8.
34:53But coming up, stress-free holidays in Malaga required.
34:57Seize the day, a place in the sun.
