00:00Now, who have we got with us today? Jackie McLeod, originally from London. You now live in Richmond, North Yorkshire,
00:06you lucky ladies. Very lovely.
00:08I moved there just over a year ago. I love it.
00:10Brilliant. Now, you're a retired medical secretary, but one of your major, I guess, claims to fame was that in
00:171991 you were the series runner-up.
00:20Yes.
00:21Is that right?
00:21That's right.
00:22And your main pastime is Scrabble, so you're a very hot contender, I think, for future glory in this particular
00:28competition, particularly as you're faced by an old adversary rejoicing in the name of Barry Grossman.
00:35Barry is a researcher from Hertford, but also he beat you, Jackie, back in 1991 in the series final, so
00:42this really is a grudge match.
00:44I shall try and get my revenge.
00:46Yeah? Well, now, time to get your own back. Your own back on Barry.
00:50Barry, yeah? I think, Barry, you've just come back from the States, haven't you?
00:54That's right. Yesterday or something, yesterday morning.
00:58Now's your chance, Jackie. He'll be all jet-lagged.
01:01Possibly.
01:01You've got him on the run.
01:03All right. Big round of applause for Jackie and Barry.
01:10Very good. Welcome back, Susie. Welcome back, Susie.
01:13And, indeed, welcome back, Martin Lewis, who has had a recent addition to the family, I think.
01:18Uh, Sapphire Susan.
01:21That's right. Yes.
01:22Uh, our little girl.
01:24Uh, it's interesting because, you know, you often hear parents say that their child is the most beautiful child that
01:29they've ever seen.
01:29Yes.
01:30Well, in my case, that's true.
01:34And she was the sweet little thing, weighing in at six pounds, six ounces, back in November.
01:39That's right. That's right. And they grow fast. Yes. Well, yes, she's, she's absolutely adorable.
01:45She's still in the stage at the moment where she's mostly a thing that cries and gurgles and smiles and,
01:50and poos and wheezes and throws up.
01:51But I love her anyway.
01:53Of course you do. And you'll love her more and more and more.
01:56Absolutely.
01:56And she will have you wrapped around a little finger.
01:59She already does. I'm, she, she's, she's daddy's little girl. I'm already, I'm already there and smitten.
02:03Excellent stuff.
02:04Jackie, is this game of, uh, countdown, this grudge match.
02:09So, take it away, Jackie. It's a letters game.

08:16Jackie?
08:17Also eight.
08:18Barry?
08:19Inhalers.
08:20Inhalers.
08:20Same word.
08:21Look at this.
08:23Yep.
08:24Very good.
08:26Now then, what else have we got over in the corner?
08:28I think I may have something that could growl for me.
08:31Arrgh!
08:32And if I did it, I'd go, arrgh!
08:34Does that make me snarlier than you?
08:36Definitely.
08:38Snarlier.
08:38And also an eight.
08:40Very good.
08:41Snarlier.
08:4229 plays 21 as we turn our attention to a numbers game.
08:47Jackie?
08:48Hello.
08:49I'll have just one big and five small, please.
08:52Thank you, Jackie.
08:52One from the top.
08:53And five little ones for you.
08:56And for the first time in your contest, the five small are six, eight, two, three, five,
09:05and a large one, 25, and the target, 221.
09:10Two to one.
09:11Two to one.
09:42Jackie?
09:43220.
09:45220, one away.
09:46Yes, Barry?
09:47221.
09:48221.
09:49So, Barry?
09:516 plus 3 is 9.
09:526 plus 3, 9.
09:54Times 25 is 225.
09:58And 8 divided by 2 is 4.
10:00Yep.
10:01Correct.
10:01Well done, 221.
10:02Very good indeed.
10:03Well done, Barry.
10:06Well done, Barry.
10:0739 to Jackie's 21.
10:10But now we turn to Martin.
10:12Martin, yesterday a masterclass in annuities.
10:15And today...
10:16Another question.
10:18Yes.
10:18I think you're going to do this one.
10:20It was going to be Rachel, but she's got her sore throat.
10:22So, Nick, you're the focus.
10:23Very simple.
10:24You've bought a new house.
10:25Yes.
10:25It's a freehold property.
10:27Yes.
10:27Three options for you on the buildings insurance.
10:32Oh.
10:33Do you cover...
10:34A, its current market value.
10:37B, the cost of rebuilding it if it were knocked down.
10:40Or C, the mortgage company's original valuation plus any uprate for inflation.
10:47I think it's got to be the replacement value, the rebuild.
10:51It is.
10:52It is.
10:53And I'm so glad...
10:54Would you have got that?
10:54No, definitely not.
10:55So many people get this wrong.
10:57And one of the big problems is, of course, they insure the market value of your house.
11:01So, your house might be worth £250,000.
11:03But a huge element of that depends on location.
11:05But all the insurance has to cover is the cost of simply rebuilding it if it were knocked down.
11:10Because that's what they're going to do.
11:11You should also check in there that if there were to be problems, they would put you up somewhere in
11:15the meantime.
11:16So, many people are vastly overpaying on their buildings insurance because they're insuring a much, much bigger sum than is
11:21necessary.
11:22In some cases, two or three times.
11:24And I've seen people who, simply by getting it right, can save £300 or £400 a year.
11:28Now, I'm not going to go into my full how to save on buildings insurance while we're here.
11:31But it's incredibly important you insure the right amount.
11:34One other tip for you people often get wrong is if they have separate buildings and contents covers.
11:38They say, well, what counts as buildings, what counts as contents?
11:43Very easy way to think about this.
11:45Imagine your house, turn it upside down.
11:49If it falls, it's contents.
11:51If it sticks, it's buildings.
11:54But there can be a few things that fall over that line, which is why often, while it may not
11:59be the cheapest,
12:00if you are insuring both, getting a joint buildings and contents cover tends to be the most sensible way.
12:05Good advice. Great advice.
12:07Well done, the consumer's friend.
12:08Martin, but now it's time for a Tea Time teaser, which is Fly Creek.
12:13And the clue, in America, it's all about publicising Roberta.
12:17In America, it's all about publicising Roberta.
12:35Welcome back.
12:36I left you with the clue.
12:38In America, it's all about publicising Roberta.
12:41And the answer is flackery.
12:44Flackery.
12:44Roberta Flack.
12:45Flackery.
12:46Something's about abusive elections or something.
12:49Well, it's American, actually.
12:50It sounds like quackery.
12:51So you think there's some deception going on.
12:52But it's simply to publicise or promote.
12:54So flackery is, yep, the publicising or something.
12:58OK.
12:59To advertise?
13:00Yep.
13:00Promote or advertise.
13:02Exaggerate.
13:02It's to flack it.
13:03No, there doesn't seem to be any element of misdeed in there.
13:07It just seems to be a flack is a publicity agent and to flack is to publicise or publicise.
13:11I always thought it was a publicity agent because they took the flack, but I didn't realise it comes from
13:17a separate spelling and different spelling.
13:19It does, yeah.
13:19Very good.
13:20Thank you for that.
13:2139 plays 21.
13:22Barry in the lead.
13:23Barry, your letters game.
13:26Consonant, please.
13:27Thank you, Barry.

14:42Like a crow.
14:43Very good.
14:43Yeah, very good.
14:44Anything else there now?
14:45I think we have an eight, which I'm getting very excited about this week because of the
14:50quality of contestants that we have.
14:53Yes.
14:53I would love to claim I had got it, but Susie.
14:56Yes, Susie.
14:58It's Veronica, which is a herbaceous plant, typically with upright stems and spikes of
15:04blue or purple flowers, but it's also...
15:06It's a matador's pass.
15:08Well, it can be...
15:09Yeah, exactly.
15:09It can be the movement of a matador's cape away from the bull or a cloth supposedly impressed
15:14with an image of Christ's face.
15:17That's a Veronica.
15:18That's a Veronica too.
15:18Because there was a Saint Veronica or something?
15:21Did somebody press the cloth over?
15:24Yes.
15:24With reference to Saint Veronica, by association of the attitude of the matador with a depiction
15:29of Saint Veronica holding out a cloth to Christ.
15:31Yeah, okay.
15:32They're all linked.
15:33Very good.
15:34Very good.
15:34Very good indeed.
15:36That's fun.
15:3646 to 21.
15:38Now then, Jackie.

16:54Driver of a horse-drawn carriage.
16:55Well done.
16:57Good for a wagon.
16:58A wagoner.
17:00Very good.
17:01So, 28.
17:02You've crept up there to Barry's 46.
17:04And we go into another letters game, Barry.

18:24Yes, I'm not sure about Miss Diet.
18:28It sounds interesting, but it's not there, I'm afraid.
18:32This is excellent.
18:33Well, Barry, I think Jackie's on the march.
18:37She is, yeah.
18:38She's coming for you.
18:39She's coming for you indeed.

19:45Jackie? Seven.
19:47A seven, yep. Barry?
19:49And seven.
19:50All right, Jackie?
19:51Creates.
19:52Creates, very good.
19:53Also creates.
19:55Creates.
19:55Two creates.
19:56Yeah, that's my creates.
19:58Yes.
19:59Now then, Martin.
20:01The quality here is so very high.
20:03We had another seven in restage,
20:05but it's every time just to go ahead of these two is...
20:08Very difficult.
20:09Very difficult.
20:10Very difficult.
20:11Very good.
20:11Restage and creates.
20:1342 plays at 53.
20:15As we now turn our attention to Susie's origins of words.
20:18Susie?
20:19Well, I had a nice email from a viewer, Pam Stevens,
20:22and she asked me for the origins of two things, actually.
20:25First, the dashboard on a car.
20:27Why is it called the dashboard?
20:29And also, for somebody you want to avoid if you're in a car,
20:32it's an American term, and that's a jaywalker.
20:34Yeah.
20:34So she was interested in those two terms.
20:36First of all, dashboard.
20:37It was once a wooden board or a leather screen at the front of a horse-drawn carriage.
20:42And the idea is that it would protect the driver and the passenger
20:45for any mud splashed up or dashed up from the roads,
20:48which were often quite muddy.
20:49So very, very simple.
20:50The name was kept for the partition that separated the front seat from the engine
20:55when cars were first introduced.
20:57So quite an old term.
20:59Before jaywalkers, there were jay drivers,
21:02and they were those who literally wandered about all over the road in their cars.
21:06And the jay here is the bird of the species garrulous.
21:10And its name, the jay's name,
21:12has long been applied to foolish or gossiping people,
21:15and by extension to country bumpkins, I'm afraid.
21:17And in the 1920s, references began to emerge of jaywalkers
21:22at the time when city councils were beginning to pass laws
21:25preventing pedestrians from crossing the road any time they wanted to.
21:29And those laws, as you can imagine, didn't go down very well.
21:31And there's one open letter sent to the city of Nebraska's commissioners,
21:35a very unhappy citizen, writing,
21:38Dear friends, forget all about the jaywalking ordinance,
21:40the very name of which insults every citizen.
21:43Give the people credit for having a grain of common sense like yourselves,
21:47and being able to take care of themselves
21:49if they have managed before without your grandmotherly help.
21:52It sounds very much like modern complaints about health and safety.
21:54But the rebellion didn't work, and jaywalking continues to be illegal
21:57and also punishable by a very hefty fine in some states in America.
22:01But there you go, those are your two origins for you, Pam.
22:04Thank you very much. Well done.
22:08Very good. 53 plays 42.
